After a day of running errands, my brother was giving me a ride home when he says, "I need to get…read moresome flatbread..." I remembered a place on Jackson Street that I had gone to 5 years ago that had a tremendous selection - looked it up on Yelp and it was no longer on Jackson, but was listed in Castro Valley. So we went thought we'd go by and give it a try. Great decision! The "new" store in Castro Valley is much brighter, cleaner, nicer than the old location. I think the old location had more stuff from Eastern Europe, but this new location seems to have a broader selection, with more stuff from Western Europe and the Middle East. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and helpful - always willing to answer questions and even give tips on how to use the products that they sell. And his recommendations have been great - we asked him about which tahini and zaatar to get (they have many different brands/types of each...) and the ones he recommended have been way tastier than any of the brands that you find in most markets. Especially good was his recommendation on lebnah - he said that the brands they carry are all good, but they have some that they package in-house that was special. I tried it - it was less expensive than the other brands, but was the very best lebnah that I have ever tasted! Richer, creamier, with just the right amount of tang. Wonderful stuff! Anyway, Crossroads is a nice, clean, well-lit place with a great selection of unique products, and friendly, knowledgeable sales staff. Well worth a trip!

Nicole makes sure to explain everything thoroughly, including the history of each cheese. Makes everything super interesting. We also included a grazing board and they were all so delicious. We were eating, making cheese, and having fun the entire time. Parking is a bit difficult so we just did ride share there. The place is a bit hard to find but it's a office room inside a parking gate. I am definitely go back with friends and family the next chance i get. I hope this place doesn't get too famous so Nicole still has time left for us! haha Thank you for everything Nicole!!

We were provided with our very own cheese-making kit ahead of the class (with immersion thermometer, cheesecloth and straining basket included) and super detailed instructions to replicate the recipe at home in just 10 minutes. Worth to note that the cheese culture packet that came with our kit was enough to culture an additional 3 quarts of milk beyond the one we prepped, too. Nicole was lovely - she answered all our questions, and gave us pro cheese seasoning/paring and gifting tips. Would highly recommend, especially for large-group/team bonding events. Looks like everyone will be getting fresh cheese this Christmas :-)

I think it's a good sign when colleagues start feeding each other cheese during team-building.

It's located on the borderline of Walnut Creek and Alamo-ish areas, and certainly not in an area most people would be driving by unless you live in this area since it's mostly residential here, or you're driving through Olympic locally for something in that direction that's not the downtown. First things first, it's a small place. It's a local market, so it's not going to be very large. They do have their own parking lot in the front, and there's also plenty of parking in the back as well, so that shouldn't be an issue here even though the store is small. While I've seen some people note this as a Japanese market, it is not. While they carry a small section of Japanese stuff, here, most of the things are very much a Chinese focused type of offerings, from the types of produce, to the packaged stuff here. They'll have some miscellaneous stuff like a section just for pastas and sauces in the right side of the store on a rack, they're mostly a Chinese market. If you need a comparison, they're like a mini 99 Ranch. Price wise, it's about right for this area. If you compare it to other grocery market chains it's definitely not comparable, but for a local market in this area, it's not bad. The fish is indeed on the more expensive side, but it does look pretty fresh at least so there's that. They also have some to-go sushi boxes of stuff. It's nice to see they have a variety of offerings from their sushi to-go options, albeit, not cheap but at least they did look pretty good though. The sashimi boxes looked great because the fish quality appears to be great here. The only thing again, it is a bit pricey for some of these options, so just be aware of that. Green Fish is a nice little market for this area, and certainly will have a variety of things here you may be interested in. Again, it's not a large market, so just be aware of space if they do get busy. The fish counter is literally wedged into the corner of the store, but still offers fresh seafood options for those locally to buy from (albeit a bit pricey). They have offerings of various things akin to 99 Ranch, but certainly more focused on mostly Chinese and Japanese as oppose to Ranch that offers a lot of different Asian brands too. While they have pastas and sauces and stuff, that's basically it for the non-Asian market stuff. This is very much an Asian market. I will definitely want to try out some of those takeout rolls and maybe their sashimi eventually.

You can also buy plastic lids for Ball mason jars here, which I could only find on Amazon before. I use variously sized mason jars a lot for fermenting and they always come with metal lids which corrode and smell awful, so it's nice to be able to buy plastic lids locally. This store also sells fermentation weights which I use in the jars. Unfortunately the "100% cotton twine" ("NORPRO" brand, "QUALITY FOR THE COOK") sold here is not 100% cotton but has some plastic in it, which is not good if you were planning to use it with food. If you light the end of some of this string on fire and blow it out, it smells like burnt plastic. "Made in China" of course. It seems fairly common for Bay Area retailers to sell items that they don't quite know the provenance of, which may just be a sign of the times. I think most consumers do not know about this easy flame test for the purity of natural fiber products. I found a "REGENCY NATURALS" "100% natural cotton" "cooking twine" product at Ace Hardware which seems slightly cleaner. The best cotton twine in my collection came from Target I think, but the cardboard spool just says "blade included" on it, I don't see a brand name. It is only 10 yards or so. Also, the "Yelp!" website seems to be hacking my computer, so everyone should be grateful that I took the risk of helping inform my community via this medium.
