After a trip to the outlets, on the way back to Boston, I was near death with hunger pains. I've been in this situation before and it ended not so satisfyingly with a bad pizza experience. I was determined to find a better place for dinner and came across Alpamayo on Yelp. Score one for Yelp as this ended up being a great choice. I wavered a bit as to 4 or 5 stars. The food was definitely on the 4 star side - it was good, but it didn't wow me. The restaurant was nice and clean - my boyfriend thought maybe a little too clean in the sense that it could have been decorated more. I didn't really notice - probably because I was starving and concentrating on stuffing my face. Alpamayo gets the bump to 5 stars for great service and some unique cuisine for the area. The standout was a very unique, spicy, delicious drink that it perfect for fall/winter or any season as it was very refreshing. There's a HELP WANTED sign. What it should say is HELP NEEDED. We've patronized this restaurant several times since my first review, and have generally enjoyed the food. Tonight, all that changed. We know it can get busy, so we made a reservation prior to driving over. When a restaurant takes your reservation, you expect that a table would be reserved for you, right? WRONG. There was no table reserved for us. There were no available tables. They asked us to wait 15 minutes for a table to be freed up. So, despite the annoyance, we waited patiently outside. We waited for more than 30 minutes. A couple walked in while we were waiting. We saw them prep a table for four. Assuming it was for us, I reentered the restaurant, only to see them seat the couple who just walked in without a reservation. When confronted, the waitress who seated the couple did not know there was a reservation, and after checking the list, confirmed we were on it and apologized and offered the next available table. I walked out to confer with the rest of the party when the other waitress, presumably one of the owners or relation, follows me out and tells me she thought we had left and that's why she gave away our table, despite the fact that we were waiting outside in CLEAR VIEW! I hope they have customers to burn, because they just lost a repeat customer.. read more

This is one of my favorite finds since moving to the Berkshires. I often feel like I'm relegated to eating boring food, so it is really great to have a delicious option that is also a bit off the beaten track. The first time I ate here was a surprisingly warm weekend in November. We figured we wouldn't need a reservation because it was November, but when we walked in the restaurant was *slammed.* We got a table right away, but we could tell the restaurant had been caught off-guard by the unseasonal weather. The waitress was very friendly and, although service was understandably slow, we felt really taken care of. She took care of the entire restaurant by herself. she is a superstar! She was also there on my next visit (which was in much more seasonal weather, so many fewer diners!) and was still great - and then I overheard that it was her birthday! I was so impressed that she was working and providing such great service on her special day. The food is excellent. If you've never eaten Peruvian before, I recommend either the lomo or pollo saltado - either steak or chicken with delicious vegetables and sauce served over french fries. The "serving food over french fries" thing is my favorite part of Peruvian cuisine! I've also had the choros a la chalaca for an appetizer - mussels with a delicious topping that is almost like pico de gallo. Mmm. The prices are reasonable and portions are generous. Service is friendly and helpful, but can be a bit slow so I wouldn't recommend them for a quick meal or if you're in a hurry. I'm looking forward to returning soon! read more

Best. Food. Around. We LOVE Alpamayo and have been regulars for years! The ceviche is out of this world and every dish is plenty of food! My go-to's are the Lomo Saltado and Arroz Chaufa. Really marvelous Peruvian food that will keep you coming back. While you are reading the menu, they bring some very delicious toasted corn kernels...hard to resist! We had a great meal here. We started with the Ceviche Mixto and it was delicious. There was plenty to share among the 3 of us. The wonderful taste of lime permeated and perfectly complimented the fresh seafood. I had the Jalea which was a very good choice, but I also tasted the Bisteck Encebollado, which was cooked to perfection. This restaurant is a remarkable find. The food is fantastic. What a disappointment. My wife and I enjoy Peruvian food, reminds us of a trip we took some years back. It's also unique enough and rare enough that we have it that we thought this highly rated restaurant would be a particular treat. In light of the high ratings and the fact that it was bustling on a Wednesday night we went in with high hopes. It started off promising, with a chica marada that tasted just right...refreshing and just a little sweet. Perfect. Alas, what followed was a bland plate of flavorless ceviche. I've been disappointed by ceviche many times but had really hoped that this popular Peruvian place would break that trend. But it was bland mixed seafood with just a hint of spice...not the tart, flavorful ceviche I had hoped for. Just rubbery chunks of seafood flesh in a thin, tepid sauce that tasted vaguely of limes and chilies We followed it up with the Cau Cau Marisos, a dish billed as a mix of vegetables and calamari. I was incredibly disappointed to find that the "vegetables" consisted of diced carrots and peas, clearly from either a can or a bag of frozen. That it one of my biggest pet peeves, exceeded only by being served flavorless lukewarm rings of squid that have clearly been just thrown into another dish...no flavor, barely warm. Yeah, this dish featured that too. So an exceptional disappointment, a made-from-frozen flavorless fiasco. Clearly this place is popular so maybe my wife and I just made the wrong choices...everyone else was getting shrimp and rice. Maybe that is good, I would not know. But it was abundantly clear from our meal that this restaurant does not know how to do ceviche (a Peruvian signature dish) and they cut corners on their produce and their seafood prep. Unacceptable in my book. It didn't help that they were seriously overwhelmed and the service was slow to boot. read more

My wife and I recently visited this nice little restaurant and loved it. The owners were very nice and friendly. The restaurant was very clean and inviting with a pleasant ambiance. When I asked a question about one of our dishes, the chef came out and chatted with us. We were the only ones there at the time so they were probably more casual than they might have been at a busier time. I was interested in how they had chosen a small town like Lee to open a Peruvian restaurant and discovered that they were previously from Pittsfield, not Peru. My wife had the Bistek a lo Pobre and it was the same dish described in another review of this restaurant. However my wife loved hers. The steak was very tasty and cooked just as she requested. I had the Shrimp Paella which was very tasty and I was very pleased with it. The serving was very large so I enjoyed it for lunch the next day too. There were some nice Peruvian touches which made our meal memorable. When we first arrived we were brought a bowl of corn which I believe had been baked or roasted so they had the consistency and taste of nuts. I enjoyed those. We also decided to try the Chica Morada drink which was made from purple corn, fruits and spices. It was very sweet and tasty and made us feel like we were enjoying some authentic Peruvian touches. They do have a lunch menu which reflects lower lunch prices and includes some of the same items as on their dinner menu, including the Shrimp Paella. We did enjoy the brief visit with them as well as the food. I am definitely looking forward to our next visit. Unless gas prices get much higher I would still be willing to make the 50 mile drive to visit them again. I am very glad we discovered this great little restaurant! I have been looking for authentic Peruvian food in Massachusetts since I moved here in 2016 for school and I found it. I was in the area for the weekend and I stopped in and had such amazing food. The staff was gracious and I felt like I was having dinner in Lima years ago. Definitely a place to visit. read more

Nice little Peruvian restaurant in the center of Lee, Massachusetts in the heart of the Berkshires, about 15-20 minutes from Tanglewood. I had the Parihuela which they call a soup but I'd consider a seafood stew. It's similar to a bouillabaisse or a cioppino. It's loaded with chunks of fish, calamari, shrimp, mussels and clams. They are all anchored by the most amazing robust broth. The broth is superb with a mild kick and could make anything taste great. Finished the meal with a tasty flan. Prices are good and the service is courteous and friendly. Definitely would go back. read more

I would rate my meal a 5, the husband rated his a 3, so 4 it is. I was excited to try something new and we ordered the plantains and corn and cheese starters. I then got the shrimp in garlic sauce and he the 1/2 roasted chicken. The corn and cheese is so odd - it is literally giant corn on the cob pieces with a salty cheese. But, I LOVED it. I wish I knew what kind of cheese it was. Husband loved the plantains, but thought the chicken was just okay. The shrimp I had were perfectly cooked and not drowning in sauce. The rice was also delicious. I loved that the chef came around to talk to the tables as well. read more

Stopped here after going to the Lee Prime Outlets. This is my second visit here but my first review. This place is a find. The food is delicious and plentiful. I love that they serve you a small ramekin of Chocle, which is Peruvian unpopped popcorn, while you are waiting for your meal to arrive. It is crunchy and tasty, think Corn Nuts, only 100% better. I had the Pescado Frito which is the fried tilapia and it came with steamed rice and fried yucca. My dining companion had the Calamares Frito and that came with fried yucca. If you are in the area and want a really good meal, then this is the place for you. read more

We eat at Alpamayo every few trips to Lee and always enjoy the variety and taste of their food and the authentic menu. Their ceviche (a national dish of Peru) is fresh and flavorful, and there are always a few to choose from. We enjoy their rice dishes, both meat and seafood, which are always spiced just right. You also can't go wrong with any of their apps. The only dish we would not recommend is the guinea pig which was flavorful but a bit dry and very small. Not terrible, but not up to the rest of the menu. Service is excellent, the chicha morada great, and the toasted corn worth buying extra to take home. It crushes popcorn as a movie snack. A great place to eat especially if you are looking for a change of pace. read more

My only regret (and the reason it does not get 5 stars) is that I wish they had more fresh and low calorie vegetables with the meal. This place was SO GOOD. We needed a place to eat dinner while driving back to Boston from upstate NY and I randomly found this place on Yelp. I was originally put off by the slightly higher price point (we just wanted something super cheap) but we decided to go for it anyway and I'm really glad we did. The atmosphere inside is super casual and comfortable. The food was amazingly good. We got the Arroz Chaufa (a fried rice dish with chicken), a side of plantains, and a side of yucca. The portions were generous, and the fried rice was so good that I am legitimately sad I do not live closer to this place so I can get it again, and frequently. The plantains and yucca were delicious. My boyfriend tried the cold Chicha Morada (drink made with purple corn!!) which was SUPER good, and I got the hot Peruvian tea which was delightful. Both had spices / flavors that were reminiscent of fall, cinnamon-y goodness. The guy serving us was awesome, he clearly was passionate about the food, was happy to answer any of our questions, and checked in on us frequently. We walked in at 4:15 on a Sunday after a session at the outlets and ordered quickly, expecting to have a late-lunch-early-dinner of sorts. Unfortunately it turned out to be a regular dinner as we didn't get our food until 5:20. The waitress knew the wait was getting excessive and brought over a cup of corn nuts, but didn't apologize or offer anything else for our patience. I think the cooks might not have been there when we sat, since another party who came in 30 minutes after us was eating within five minutes of us. None of the other reviews mention long waits for food, so I'm guessing it's a Sunday afternoon thing? The long wait aside, the food was good. We had the Arroz con Mariscos and a beef dish (Lomo something...) which were both very tasty. I expected slightly larger portions for the price--we actually finished both plates, but at most places with similarly priced rice dishes I end up taking tomorrow's lunch home. read more

We had lunch here on a weekend with kids, ages 6 & 7. At 1 pm, we were the only customers on a busy Sunday in the summer, so we were worried at first. But it was nearly full by the time we left, and I understand why--it may be pricey for a weekend lunch, but the food is fresh, flavorful and served quickly and cheerfully. I don't care for tablecloths at lunch, and I wish they had a lower-priced lunch menu. I was going to give the restaurant four starts, only because the service was a bit slow. However, the food was absolutely outstanding, and I need to give kudos to the owner for his incredible honesty. More later. First the food... Seven of us went to Alpamayo tonight. We had heard good things about it, but only one of us had ever had Peruvian food, including my in-laws, who are not terribly adventurous in their dining choices. We ordered the potato with cheese and Peruvian pepper appetizer, which was very good. The sangria, at $22 per pitcher was good, and reasonably priced. They did not make it 75% ice to save on the liquor. We ordered a wide range of dinners. My wife and I had the sirloin steak, plantain and fried egg, although my wife substituted yucca, which the restaurant gladly did. My daughter, son and nephew got three different steak dishes, which we all tasted. The in-laws had a quarter chicken and the wings, non hot variety. Everything was out of this world. The spices were deliciously crafted without being hot. The portions are not huge, but they are large enough and are very reasonably priced. I definitely look forward to coming back here. Now for the owner's honesty. I guess I did not look at the bill that carefully. As many restaurants do, they added a tip, since we were a large group. I did not notice this and added an additional tip. He actually called me to tell me, and offered to take off the extra tip. He didn't need to do that. He had my number, because we made a reservation and left me a detailed voice message. That is going above and beyond. read more

Mixed experiences at this place. Very kind & attentive service always. Warm & pleasant dining area. They were open on a Sunday during a blizzard for lunch when Bae and I couldn't make it out of town due to hazardous driving conditions. Food has been largely underwhelming, however. Cannot recommend the chicken, unless you're getting it to-go, for your dog. Ceviche made with cod was super flavorful! Menu is very meat-centric. Quinoa salad would have benefited greatly from a little lemon juice or a vinaigrette dressing. We tried a boiled potato appetizer on our second visit and it was totally bland. This is absolutely one of the best and authentic Latin American restaurants in the area. I got a dish that had steak,fries,rice with an egg on top (which is delicious), and sweet plantains. The steak was awesome and flavorful while fries and rice goes together beautifully and the plantains were like biting into a banana that was handed to me from God. Happened to have been in the Berkshire's on June 6, 2018, And was looking for a Peruvian restaurant. Needless to say, this was the only option available. It definitely was not like the Peruvian cuisine that I am accustomed to. For one the portion was very small, and the food lacked that authentic Peruvian taste/flavor. This place was solid. The sweetest staff, who are proud to recommend you all the Peruvian favorites. Trust them & you will find yourself on a real adventure. We had ceviche, the mixed kind, a beef dish, a seafood dish, and the special Peruvian purple beverage. The tres leches cake was good, but would probably skip it next time in favor of local ice cream. The sauce that comes with the yucca was delicious-if you like spice. Another pro, was that the place was hopping at 9pm at night, a sure sign of a local favorite. read more
