I swung by here after dinner one day for a sweet treat and it was nice. The interior of the shop is small and there is minimal seating; it's definitely a grab and go spot. Service is very nice. Unfortunately, when I went, there was no sampling available so I had to just pick a flavor and wish for the best. I ended up choosing strawberry ice cream and it was solid. The ice cream here is really creamy, milky, and a bit stretchy/thick (if you know that I mean). Not a bad spot for ice cream in the area. read more

Nothing but great things to say about this spot. Walked over here after dinner on a weekday night around 9 PM to get dessert. The flavors of ice cream are clearly displayed on the board, and there is a fun decoration on the wall where you can measure how many scoops tall you are. I love that there is a blurb about how this shop supports the community. The people working inside were happy to let us sample. They were friendly and attentive. The ice cream scoops were huge, even in the regular size, and the texture is super thick! We got the spicy Mexican/Mayan chocolate flavor and wow, did it have a kick! Quite spicy and indulgent with its deep chocolate flavor. Interacting with the man behind the counter put a huge smile on our faces. I would highly recommend going here for ice cream. Came here for dessert on a Friday night and it wasn't too crowded when we arrived - a line formed not long after us though as we were eating. It's a cute little place with not much seating, just a bench really to sit on close to the window. I thought that the servers were really friendly and they have a good variety of flavors to choose from - most of the basic expected ice cream flavors are there. They also let you try the flavors, and I tried 2 before getting butter pecan. The ice cream was good, but pretty standard. First off the service was amazing. Everyone was saying their favorite flavor/giving tips which was a little overwhelming. Overall everybody was super nice and made sure we were happy. Their scoop of ice cream completed my night. This place has been on my bookmark list for so long and I feel like a fool to only have gone now. First, major plus that this shop opens until late into the night; it felt like fate to have come across the shop just when we had that late-night sweet tooth craving. Only ordered a single scoop of Mocha cookie crumble in a cup to share with my brother and mom but it was definitely more than enough. The owner was so generous with the scoop I was wondering if he had misheard our order and not only that, he even charged us a dollar less! Regardless, I would have been happy to pay the full amount because the mocha cookie crumble was SO good!!! It was creamy, with a subtle coffee taste that lingers at the end of each bite and just the right amount of sweetness mixed with the cookie crumbles. You know it's legit when your Asian mother compliments it as "Not too sweet". Looking forward to visiting again to try out more flavors! read more

Finally a good ice cream place with big portions! I got a kids size, and they let you still choose 2 flavours. And "half" scoop is quite large! When the server was trying to just tack a bit more ice cream to the scoop, both customers in front of me and behind me even politely declined more ice cream lol. I had the chocolate fudge and lavender and really liked both! I enjoyed the strong lavender flavour. I also sampled green tea, ube, and Mexican chocolate flavours. Green tea and ube tasted pretty plain, but the Mexican chocolate had a good kick of spiciness. I don't even know how many times I paid for ice creams with horrible textures. But the texture here was what you would expect for a good ice cream--creamy and not too watery nor icy. Also, the price is pretty good for the portion that you get. In Van Leeuwen, you get like half of kids size here or even less for almost $8. Only downside of the place was that... when I first walked in, I smelled what reminded me of the washroom. It might have been just bad ventilation that day though. Still would come back to try other flavours. read more

It's hard to find much fault with this spot in terms of their mission. They are both an ice cream shop as well as a way for youths to get some job training. They serve old school thick no-nonsense flavors and put a whole lot of ice cream in one scoop. You might think it's pricey at a first glance until they put the spoons back and put even more inside. Sprinkles are free also for those who like them. The actual flavor was pretty good. I got the salted caramel which had a mix of chocolate chips and said caramel and it was decent. If they didn't have the mission behind them as well as the generous portions, I probably would give them a lower rating but it's a good place to support. read more

If you want really great ice cream but dont want to pay a million dollars for Van Leeuwen's, Alphabet Scoop has got your back. Most of their flavors are great. My personal favorites are the butter pecan, ginger, and kulfi. The kulfi is unique and floral - I believe a seasonal flavor, pistachio base with cardamom and rose - and it's seriously some of the best ice cream I've had. Some other flavors aren't as creamy or texturally ideal, but overall I highly recommend coming. Especially when they have buy 1 get 1 pint for free deals. read more

Ok, so I'm not a fan of butter pecan because I don't like how the big store brands nuts are mushy. Alphabet Scoop caramelizes or sugar coats theirs so they stay firm and taste amazing! The ice cream tastes genuinely good. Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Not only does Alphabet Scoop provide jobs and job training to kids they are teaching them how to deal with a wide variety of people. This alone would make me want to come here but the fact that they make ALL of their ice creams in house...I am SOLD! They allow you to try any flavor and give you a big bite so you actually taste the flavor of your choice. We had the mint chip, a raspberry with some chocolate in it, killer strawberry and the best ever butter pecan. There are a lot of ice cream spots in the East Village. Outstanding, freshly made ice cream! The Salted Caramel with chocolate chips was wonderful, but it was their Butter Pecan that was superb! They use candied pralines and the flavor is better than any Butter Pecan I've tried. Staff is friendly and the offer of samples helped narrow down the choices. read more

Not so good. I get it's a non profit. But management needs to throughly train staff of ice cream ingredients and general customer service. We walked in and the employee was sleeping at the counter. She gets up takes our orders. I ordered 3 ice creams, for my partner, niece and myself. I ordered the vegan chocolate chip, it was a great flavor but I got the literal bottom of the bucket. She was scraping forever, little shags of ice cream. When she was done it was hardly a scoop. Then my partner ordered a regular chocolate chip, which the manager and the employee were unsure of an Ice cream swap reg or vegan and who's fault it was. All while we're just standing there in a hot shop. My niece got a reg chocolate chip waffle cone, hers was perfect she loved it, but by the time we ate em and walked home her mouth swelled up. We called the ice cream shop and tasked them what was in the ice cream she's only allergic to walnuts and they promised there was no walnuts or cross contamination. Eating ice cream sometimes could be a sin but eating ice cream for a good cause definitely makes anybody feel great! This is a non-profit organization and the girls who work here are simply amazing! We tried their autumn flavor or caramel apple pie and we actually could taste the pie crust and sugared apple inside! The smallest scoop is 4oz and only $4. This place is legit. There are so many things that really make it the best. Alphabet scoop serves the community: mentors youth and teaches them practical and book knowledge The ice cream is homemade and deeeeeeelicious (not too sweet, actual nuts, etc), the staff was super friendly and helpful. I love this place, with the bottom of my heart! They make each of their icecreams with love! It's the perfect texture and creaminess! Prices are great and they give you heaping scoops! It is ran by a non-profit Christian society and the young boys and girls working there are working after school. I love that I'm helping them out by buying their ice cream. I am excited that they recently had a makeover by Macy's, they deserved it! Strawberry, pistachio, mint chip, and their raspberry swirl with dark chocolate dispersed inside...very very good! I have visited this ice cream shop many times, because I think that they are doing a great job mentoring teens! Their goal to give teens work experience so that they can find jobs as adults is great. The adults there are volunteers staff who mentor the teens. The teens get great job experience such as working the register, customer service, and making the ice cream with their machine! The ice cream itself is also fantastic! My favorite flavors here are the pumpkin spice (seasonal) and the cookies and cream. They have new flavors all the time, so try it out! Be mindful of their hours though, because they are not open every day and not throughout the year. Support this great cause! read more
