I don't think I've been to their old location before, but I came to the new store this time purely to try out the Hong Kong Milk Tea flavored ice cream. I saw other reviews praising how genuine it tastes to an actual HK milk tea. When I went on a weekday afternoon, it was quiet with no lines and only a couple of customers eating inside. When I ordered the HK milk tea, the staff would take out the container and squeeze some condensed milk (?) onto it, mixing, before scooping it out for me. I didn't expect the ice cream to require additional steps after ordering. I wonder if this was done because of a new batch or they find that mixing in condensed milk into the mix or after churning will affect the texture. I guess I can see how mixing condensed milk into solid ice cream would create a creamy rich texture. It's still a lot of manual labor for staff. Flavor was disappointing. It's not a bad flavor. It just wasn't HK milk tea. They categorized this under caramels, and I completely understand why. It tastes more like caramel than milk tea. I'm curious if they added caramel syrup or what led to that flavor. The milk tea comes in very faintly in the background and aftertaste. It kind of tastes like Japanese or Taiwanese bottled versions of HK milk tea, which is faint and sweet. I was looking for something deep and strong. If they had used evaporated milk then hopefully slight savoriness too. Since they added condensed milk before serving, I'm assuming they're going for the version with condensed milk instead of evaporated milk. That version is still authentic but it also means the tea flavor is expected to be way more intense due to the higher ratio of tea. I also didn't like how my lips felt oily after a few bites. Not sure if this feeling is specific to the HK milk tea flavor or to Morgenstern's in general. I don't like how we can't sample flavors. I think limiting to two flavors or something is better than none. Similar to what other people said, their flavors aren't plain vanilla type of situation. Some people might not have an idea of what certain things taste like or whether they'll be ok with a certain combination. They only have the flavors listed out on the menu (admittedly large letters) on the wall, but I think visuals affect appetite too. Even though I was interested in multiple flavors based on the names, I didn't want to order more than what I came in for, because it felt too risky without samples (limited appetite yanoe). I'm so risk averse that I think this policy makes me not want to come here again. I don't like the seating. They're diner vibes facing either the outside window or a counter (not the side with flavors). The problem is how the seats are 1) stationary bolted to the floor, and 2) seats are on a ledge that is a step up from the rest of the floor. I can imagine someone getting out of their seat and tripping because they forgot they were a step higher. There is barely any space behind the stools for you to get up and orient yourself before stepping down. Morgenstern's reopened at their Bananas location in the LES with a mix of old favorites and new flavors, and I've been eyeing this HK milk tea flavor for so long (still have no clue why it's listed under "Caramels" lol). My favorite Morgenstern's flavor ranking update: 1. Hong Kong Milk Tea Officially my new top favorite, surpassing salted pineapple egg yolk. The tea flavor is so strong and authentic. If you like hong kong milk tea, you need this one! Pro tip: pair it with viet coffee. This combo reminds me of yuen yeung (hk milk tea coffee). 2. Salted Pineapple Egg Yolk Forever one of my all-time favorite Morgenstern's flavors. I thought I'd never get to have this again after they closed. It tastes so much like taiwanese pineapple cake. Sweet, salty, and buttery. 3. Vietnamese Coffee Probably the strongest viet coffee ice cream I've had so far. More bold and bitter compared to most coffee ice creams, but the condensed milk balances everything out well. 4. Banana Mocha This reminded me so much of korean banana milk mixed with coffee. I'm already biased because I love banana + coffee together. It's on the sweeter side with the fudge melts in. 5. Hojicha Hazelnut Another new flavor after they reopened! The staff is great here! They do a great explaination of the flavors. The ambience of the place is always busy with a side of a vintage ice cream parlor. I do think this place is hyped up. The last one was my favorite because of the strong milk tea flavor. Rockiest Road was also pretty tasty, even though I'm not the biggest chocolate fan. I was most disappointed in the Hojicha Hazelnut. You can taste the hojicha flavor but they didn't really blend it in with the hazelnut. No samples? At least allow 1 sample per customer. If I'm going to spend almost $10 for a cup of a dip, I want to at least feel like it's worth spending. I echo a recent reviewer that it discourages me from returning. I don't remember if they offered samples years ago when they first opened and why they're stopped. It's likely it's eating into their supply and end profit. On the other hand, it's not reliable to ask for recommendations as it's subject to that person's view, taste, and opinion. But I also get it, I can't sample a big ticket item at a 5-star restaurant or a new limited drink at Starbucks, why should Morgenstern's allow such an option. read more

I love Morgenstern's, and I've been eating their ice cream for years now. Naturally, when they introduced Bananas, I was pretty excited to come try it. We finally got around to it tonight, and it was relatively busy inside the shop for a Thursday evening (good sign). When we stepped up to order, we inquired if we could sample the flavors. The server said "No", which is totally fine because we had our minds set already, but it was in a condescending tone. Sure whatever, we say "Okay, that's fine" and order anyways. Like other reviews mention, service leaves much to be desired- no smiles, rude tones and unfriendly body language- as if we're bothering them by ordering. Perhaps they don't allow samples because the moment you try their ice cream, you will no longer want to buy it... because from the first taste of our ice creams, we knew we messed up. We had the classic Banana Vanilla (which had no vanilla taste and kind of tastes like mush) with Rainbow Rice Krispies (lol...) and the Salted Peanut Butter (can't taste the "salted" part) with Sesame Crispy Rice (and maybe it was my bad for assuming it would be sesame flavored crispy rice but I didn't think I would be getting sesame seeds with crispy rice lol). The mini was the perfect size to share for 2 after a greasy meal. They offer limited seating on little diner stools, which are a little closer together than most. Staff remind me of angsty teens just trying to get their hours in, so not much to say about service by any means. But it's a Friday! Who wants to be at work when the weather is nice, finally! My trusted spot when it comes to creative, extraordinary flavors. I have yet to find another ice cream shop in NYC that comes close in pushing the boundaries on flavor combinations AND simultaneously keeping so many different flavors on the menu the way Morgenstern's has. Yesterday's experience involved Vietnamese coffee rum -good coffee flavor which could be a little stronger considering how strong Vietnamese coffee is for drinking, the rum was very faint. Burnt honey vanilla is a treat as always. The toasted rice notes were sweet and fragrant in the toasted rice yuzu swirl, great balance with the citrusy floral taste of the yuzu. The pineapple salted egg yolk was a surprising win in my book, it tasted deliciously sweet and savory, like Taiwanese pineapple cake (shortbread baked around a pineapple preserve filling). Truly unique! Although their East Village location is no longer open, I hope they continue to do well so I can come back soon and try their multitude of other flavors! read more

My favorite ice cream place in NYC! It's similar to Wanderlust or Salt & Straw in the West Coast with the various creative flavors. Be warned there is almost always a line here, but it's worth the wait. The flavors rotate every so often, I think every few months? I forgot what they said. She didn't even say it to just one flavor. We had a bit of back and forth before we finally landed on some available flavors. You would think they would cross out the flavor or something so we wouldn't frantically choose a random alternative at the front. Now I'm left with a Durian Banana, which tasted exactly like you would think, just super sweet. I tried my friends' choices, and they were also super sweet. Their sorbets are probably better. Either way, no one in my group loved their ice cream. We also sat in the dingy outdoor chairs, where turnoff number 2, a cockroach was camping the trash cans. There was a wait as there usually is at Morgenstern's, but this wait was just not worth it in the humid weather because the ice cream was subpar. I got one scoop of the Burnt Honey Vanilla and upon my first bite, I noticed how gritty it was - it felt icy as if it melted before and was frozen again. It was not creamy as ice cream should be and how I've had it before. The flavor was there, but the texture was just not good at all. Not to mention, it also left a weird greasy coating on my mouth... Hands down one of my fav ice cream spot in NYC. ~ Pineapple Salted Egg Yolk ~ I am so intrigued by this flavour, don't think I have had this flavour combination in an ice cream before, and I love it!!! If you know what is Taiwanese pineapple cake with egg yolk (鳳黃酥), it kinda taste like that! I don't even though how to describe the taste, it's not very sweet and not exactly savoury either. The pineapple's sweetness and citrusy flavour is balanced out nicely by the salted egg yolk. There are even some chewy salted egg yolk bits in it! ~ Green Tea Pistachio ~ I thought well it's either you don't get much green tea flavour or you don't get much pistachio flavour, boy am I wrong! You can taste both flavours!!! I'm legit surprised. Pistachio ice cream is normally very creamy and a hit heavier, but the addition of green tea have lighten it up, making it more refreshing. There are a generous amount of toasted pistachio in the ice cream, super delicious!! ~ Cardamon Lemon jam ~ First time having cardamon ice cream, all I had before are cardamom buns, and now there is an ice cream version! The cardamom flavour is very aromatic! The lemon jam inside slightly sooth out the strong punchy cardamon taste, resulting in quite a refreshing ice cream. Love this flavour! Will I be back? I wanted so bad to love this place. Waited for a bit on line until we got to the front. The way it works is a bit disorganized luckily the staff is helpful in the process. I got the salted peanut butter with honey comb pops which ended up being just the cereal topping. It was good. I wouldn't say it was the best thing I ever had, you could tell it was vegan or at least non dairy. Today I tried Malted Dulche de Leche, which was good although it didn't have a strong caramel flavor. I've heard so much about this place so naturally we had to pay it a visit. They have both ice cream and ice cream cakes. There are 88 flavors! I wish we could've sampled it but unfortunately due to covid we couldn't. I went for the raw milk and my bf got the chocolate oat and matcha pistachio. The raw milk flavor was amazing, rich and not overly sweet, it reminded me of those milk candy I used to eat when I was little. I think I liked the chocolate oat flavor a bit better, but I'm a fan of the oat flavor as always. There were some dark chocolate bits in there as well. The matcha pistachio was matcha ice cream mixed with chopped pistachio. It was a really good paring as well. They have some seatings outside but it was chilly. The worker was kind and super patient when I was picking out my exact change which I always love. I got a cup with two of their soft serve flavors: banana vanilla and ube cookies and cream. The banana one was really light and creamy and had the hint of banana flavor that was really nice. The ube does not taste like your traditional ube at all because of that banana flavor but it made a really good flavor combo. Both were super creamy and unique flavors I haven't had before. Also weird point but I don't like when ice creams are so cold to the point it hurts your teeth. This one was perfect for the 95 degree weather and didn't melt fast.
