Came here on a Saturday night and it was PACKED. They don't give free samples, which was a big turnoff. I tried the Hojicha Hazelnut, Rockiest Road, and Hong Kong Milk Tea. The last one was my favorite because of the strong milk tea flavor. Rockiest Road was also pretty tasty, even though I'm not the biggest chocolate fan. I was most disappointed in the Hojicha Hazelnut. You can taste the hojicha flavor but they didn't really blend it in with the hazelnut. It was just hojicha ice cream with hazelnuts in it, so I didn't love it. I'd love to try their other flavors, but since they don't give free samples, I'm pretty discouraged from coming back. This place is a fail! Why did the owners get rid of the original ice cream shop? There use to be a line going around the block. Now they have soft serve and the flavors are not great. We had the midnight chocolate and salted peanut butter. We had to throw away the chocolate and barely finished the peanut butter. Bring back the old shop! The server was not friendly. read more

I love Morgenstern's, and I've been eating their ice cream for years now. Naturally, when they introduced Bananas, I was pretty excited to come try it. We finally got around to it tonight, and it was relatively busy inside the shop for a Thursday evening (good sign). When we stepped up to order, we inquired if we could sample the flavors. The server said "No", which is totally fine because we had our minds set already, but it was in a condescending tone. Sure whatever, we say "Okay, that's fine" and order anyways. Like other reviews mention, service leaves much to be desired- no smiles, rude tones and unfriendly body language- as if we're bothering them by ordering. Perhaps they don't allow samples because the moment you try their ice cream, you will no longer want to buy it... because from the first taste of our ice creams, we knew we messed up. We had the classic Banana Vanilla (which had no vanilla taste and kind of tastes like mush) with Rainbow Rice Krispies (lol...) and the Salted Peanut Butter (can't taste the "salted" part) with Sesame Crispy Rice (and maybe it was my bad for assuming it would be sesame flavored crispy rice but I didn't think I would be getting sesame seeds with crispy rice lol). Walked over here expecting to see the big ice cream diner kind of style look that are scattered throughout the yelp photos but to my dismay, yelpers either uploaded photos of the wrong location or this ice cream joint turned into a soft serve only establishment--which was rather disappointing. Vegan soft serve is what they offer here--nothing more, nothing less. We opted for the ube cookies and cream soft serve. It tasted more like a tart coconut watery soft serve with crumbled oreos on the top. Not really what I was expecting! While I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. The mini was the perfect size to share for 2 after a greasy meal. They offer limited seating on little diner stools, which are a little closer together than most. Staff remind me of angsty teens just trying to get their hours in, so not much to say about service by any means. But it's a Friday! Who wants to be at work when the weather is nice, finally! My trusted spot when it comes to creative, extraordinary flavors. I have yet to find another ice cream shop in NYC that comes close in pushing the boundaries on flavor combinations AND simultaneously keeping so many different flavors on the menu the way Morgenstern's has. Yesterday's experience involved Vietnamese coffee rum -good coffee flavor which could be a little stronger considering how strong Vietnamese coffee is for drinking, the rum was very faint. Burnt honey vanilla is a treat as always. The toasted rice notes were sweet and fragrant in the toasted rice yuzu swirl, great balance with the citrusy floral taste of the yuzu. The pineapple salted egg yolk was a surprising win in my book, it tasted deliciously sweet and savory, like Taiwanese pineapple cake (shortbread baked around a pineapple preserve filling). The name is a bit bold. The place had a line on a weekend night, with other people probably also curious to know just how fine they are. Turnoff number one, not even counting the unnecessary line, was when I had a flavor in mind, but when we got to the register, the lady simply said "we don't have it." She didn't even say it to just one flavor. We had a bit of back and forth before we finally landed on some available flavors. You would think they would cross out the flavor or something so we wouldn't frantically choose a random alternative at the front. Now I'm left with a Durian Banana, which tasted exactly like you would think, just super sweet. I tried my friends' choices, and they were also super sweet. Their sorbets are probably better. Either way, no one in my group loved their ice cream. We also sat in the dingy outdoor chairs, where turnoff number 2, a cockroach was camping the trash cans. Sorry, this really wasn't it. I've had Morgenstern's ice cream at their Rivington St. location multiple times before this and those times were great! I've tried different flavors but always went back for the Burnt Honey Vanilla. It was my first time visiting this Houston St. location and boy was I disappointed. There was a wait as there usually is at Morgenstern's, but this wait was just not worth it in the humid weather because the ice cream was subpar. I got one scoop of the Burnt Honey Vanilla and upon my first bite, I noticed how gritty it was - it felt icy as if it melted before and was frozen again. It was not creamy as ice cream should be and how I've had it before. The flavor was there, but the texture was just not good at all. Not to mention, it also left a weird greasy coating on my mouth... If everyone is raving about this location, I'm sorry to say that the ice cream could be a lot better. Hope they open back up the Rivington St. location soon. read more

If you know what is Taiwanese pineapple cake with egg yolk (鳳黃酥), it kinda taste like that! I don't even though how to describe the taste, it's not very sweet and not exactly savoury either. The pineapple's sweetness and citrusy flavour is balanced out nicely by the salted egg yolk. There are even some chewy salted egg yolk bits in it! ~ Green Tea Pistachio ~ I thought well it's either you don't get much green tea flavour or you don't get much pistachio flavour, boy am I wrong! You can taste both flavours!!! I'm legit surprised. Pistachio ice cream is normally very creamy and a hit heavier, but the addition of green tea have lighten it up, making it more refreshing. There are a generous amount of toasted pistachio in the ice cream, super delicious!! ~ Cardamon Lemon jam ~ First time having cardamon ice cream, all I had before are cardamom buns, and now there is an ice cream version! The cardamom flavour is very aromatic! The lemon jam inside slightly sooth out the strong punchy cardamon taste, resulting in quite a refreshing ice cream. Love this flavour! Will I be back? I wanted so bad to love this place. Waited for a bit on line until we got to the front. The way it works is a bit disorganized luckily the staff is helpful in the process. I got the salted peanut butter with honey comb pops which ended up being just the cereal topping. It was good. I wouldn't say it was the best thing I ever had, you could tell it was vegan or at least non dairy. Today I tried Malted Dulche de Leche, which was good although it didn't have a strong caramel flavor. I've tried a lot of ice creams in my life and this was absolutely one of my favorites ever!! I came after work on a Thursday and there was no line at all. The worker was kind and super patient when I was picking out my exact change which I always love. I got a cup with two of their soft serve flavors: banana vanilla and ube cookies and cream. The banana one was really light and creamy and had the hint of banana flavor that was really nice. The ube does not taste like your traditional ube at all because of that banana flavor but it made a really good flavor combo. Both were super creamy and unique flavors I haven't had before. Also weird point but I don't like when ice creams are so cold to the point it hurts your teeth. This one was perfect for the 95 degree weather and didn't melt fast. I've heard so much about this place so naturally we had to pay it a visit. They have both ice cream and ice cream cakes. There are 88 flavors! I wish we could've sampled it but unfortunately due to covid we couldn't. I went for the raw milk and my bf got the chocolate oat and matcha pistachio. The raw milk flavor was amazing, rich and not overly sweet, it reminded me of those milk candy I used to eat when I was little. I think I liked the chocolate oat flavor a bit better, but I'm a fan of the oat flavor as always. There were some dark chocolate bits in there as well. The matcha pistachio was matcha ice cream mixed with chopped pistachio. It was a really good paring as well. They have some seatings outside but it was chilly. morgenstern's is known for having the "finest ice cream" and a lot of people flock to try their flavors. they have a really wide variety (no samples allowed!) and we got lucky because there was no line. there were SO many flavors that you could try, would recommend you look at the menu and pick before ordering because i was definitely not ready and suddenly under pressure to tell the cashier what flavor i wanted in a reasonable amount of time lol. the area is fairly clean with its iconic morgenstern's tiled flooring. i did notice that the spoons they had out for you to grab to eat your ice cream with were dirty with mysterious brown bits on them. literally had to ask the server to get me new spoons my friend got the peaches n cream and i got the pineapple salted egg yolk. i really liked the pineapple salted egg yolk, it was such a unique flavor and there were even little chunks of salted egg yolk in it - score! read more

I had bookmarked this ice cream shop for its unique flavors, so I was excited to check it out! First impressions, I loved the decor. It's all decked out in black and white with a really nice '50s nostalgia ambiance. It was very cute! They let us try a few flavors, so that was awesome. I loved the Burnt Sage flavor. It was utterly amazing. They said that flavor comes with a free chocolate dip, so that was dope! I had to try! It. blew. my. mind. It was so utterly good. I'm still dreaming about it. I have a top 3 favorite ice creams I've ever had and ...this is now on the list! If you want to know the other two, it's the olive oil flavor at Salt & Straw in Portland and Goat Cheese Lavender from Sweet Action in Denver. Yeah, I love more unique flavors. I love this place. I used to frequent the LES location more regularly when I lived in Two Bridges but now going to the Houston location is slightly easier. The interior is so well-done with that modern vintage ice cream parlor feel. There is outdoor seating at the Houston location but not at LES. Green tea pistachio is hands-down my favorite flavor. I've tried the coffee and a few others but love GTP. The affogatos are really good as well. I have yet to try the pies and am looking forward to that! read more

OVERALL/WHAT TO KNOW: -Really good ice cream and lots of flavors to choose from. -I don't think they allow you to sample the flavors before ordering. -Pretty slow if there's a line ARRIVAL: -Came here by myself in August of 2023 on a weekend afternoon. There was a line up to the door of maybe 8 people. -I had not heard of this place, but I was walking by and the vintage aesthetic caught my eye. I looked it up and saw they do cool flavors and are highly rated so I decided to stop in. It was also just a hot day and I was walking around. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the peanut butter ritz bitz flavor. It was really good and unique. It had a really exciting combo of savory peanut butter flavor and salty cracker flavor. There were also little chunks of ritz cracker in it that gave it the occasional different texture, which was also really nice. SERVICE: -The staff were kind and helpful. -I asked the person who was taking orders for advice on what to get and he gave me some great suggestions, which I really appreciated. -There were 8 people in line in front of me tops, but it took about 20 minutes to place my order and then almost as long to receive it. -I felt bad because they seemed understaffed. It took a long time to get through the line and to then to receive my order, but the staff were all clearly working hard. I think they kept running into issues like not having ingredients that they were supposed to or not being able to find things. -I wish there was a water fountain or some way to get tap water. I couldnt ask for a cup because they were too busy. There didn't even seem to be a bathroom. Having water readily available seems essential for serving ice cream because it makes people thirsty and is messy. ATMOSPHERE/LAYOUT: -There is no ice cream display or more detailed menu so you can't see what each flavor looks like or know what's in it unless you ask about them individually. -There is an ice cream shop section where they only serve ice cream and desserts and then a restaurant-like section where they serve burgers and hot food. The sections are roped off and separated from each other, but both were available and in use. -The ice cream section has no seating. It's just one long service counter. You place your order at the front with one employee and then pick it up farther down the counter from a different one. -The restaurant section is mostly just a counter with stools like you would see at a diner or a lunch counter type place. There might have been a few other tables. The counter looks into the small kitchen area where there's a grill and fryer and such to make all the hot food. -The only entrance seemed to be in the ice cream shop section so you would have to walk through it to get to the restaurant area. It's sectioned off with a rope divider. -The whole place is styled like an old school soda shop or deli. It's all black and white with tile floors and the staff wear hats and aprons. read more

I don't typically like the texture of egg yolk but when blended with pineapple ice cream it turned out to be a great combination!
