The atmosphere is very cute - we loved the old train station feel. Literally makes you feel like you're in a small town of Germany (brought back great memories of our travels there). The menu was great and they even had a dietary menu. Wish they had more chicken options. Our food was great, the waiter wasn't very attentive and the wine selection was good. Went here with my family because my parents were in town. All of the food was delicious and seemed authentic at least recipes. I'm sure the portions were Americanized, but this is to be expected in a touristy area. The restaurant itself was very cool looking like an Alpine chalet complete with banners and exposed stacked stone walls. The waitress was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and very attentive to all of her tables. We got two cocktails and an appetizer on a four person ticket and the price was roughly $160 before tip so it's not super cheap, but definitely very affordable for a tourist area and fine dining. The glazed carrots were soaked in a sauce that smelled horrible, the pork shank lacked flavor... and the dessert was supposed to be a apple pie. But when served it was Luke warm and raw. And the service was beyond slow. The waitress took our order then disappeared... so we waited and waited watching everyone around us get food when they sat way after we did. Disappointing, to say the least. Located in a fast paced building with the "historic?" train station, parking scarce for non-residents/tourists . It struck us as a McDonalds type fast food place. Service was struggling in the 80-96db noise range - yes, I measured it through our meal. Poor waiter, couldn't compete with the raucous table of drunken patrons. He did an excellent job in spite of it. Stone walls reflect and echo; that is one reason they used tapestries in European castles, temperature control another reason... We visited for a special occasion and were underwhelmed by the cafeteria style ambience, quality of food, and price to quality ratio. If this is the same chef from the other restaurant - Zum Rheingarten @ Quantico, he/she must be ill. The place wasn't advertised as an Oktoberfest beer hall, but rather a restaurant. We both had schnitzel, hers was fine, mine was fatty throughout, our red cabbage came in chunks rather than shreds, the Bratkartoffel greasy and onion heavy, German chocolate cake - delicious despite being dry, and, really?, only ONE kind of dark beer???? Went here during restaurant week. Love that they keep their normal menu as well. My date ordered from the RW menu, I ordered the 12oz filet, my date ordered the bierrock, soup and beer flight. His was pretty good, mine was amazing. Although, the accompaniments were a bit odd. All the sides are included with entrees except where noted and they are "bottomless" I was not impressed with any of the sides we got. Fancy German restaurant next to train station. Good place to have food before you catch a train. The location is also close to all the other touristic places in Fredericksburg. Ample parking around the restaurant. Came here for lunch. It has a German beer hall feel to it. With the high ceiling and staff dressed in traditional clothing. This has long been my favorite restaurant. My family is from Austria and this my soul food. I have spent many special occasions here, as I did last night, and hope to spend many more. The food is always amazing and I'm always excited to try the specials and visit with the change of seasons. When Jannec and Katherine purchased it, and it went from the Bavarian Chef to the Alpine chef, I only fell in love with it more. The quality of the food remained amazing, with even some fun new additions, but the service and atmosphere that the staff bring to the table (quite literally) is part of what makes me so very proud of Fredericksburg. We came here for my nephews birthday dinner and had reservations for 6pm. Upon arriving, we were immediately seated and water was poured in all of our glasses. Our waitress came over to take drink and food orders. I asked about their ciders if they had any and she mentioned they didn't have any. She then came back after speaking with the bar and mentioned they had a lager/cider mix. I asked for a sample and enjoyed the sample with the sugary/sweet rim. It helped balance off the beer. I asked to go ahead and order the drink since I enjoyed the sample. Once my beer was brought out, in my opinion, it tasted completely different from the sample and was hard to drink. Almost our entire table ended up ordering one of the schnitzel dishes. They were sadly out of the lamb schnitzel so someone from our party had to order something else. When the food came out, my dish itself was warm. I got the Alpine schnitzel which was a pork schnitzel topped with Swiss, bacon, mushrooms, and a white chive sauce. It was tasty overall. The sides were cold unfortunately but I enjoyed my corn and whipped potatoes. Our waitress although super sweet, seemed overwhelmed and had to run back and forth between our table and the kitchen as some items were left behind. Also, we often had empty water glasses. Overall, the restaurant itself is nice and we enjoyed the decor. Staff was friendly. It wasn't overly busy for a Saturday night. I would consider coming back, maybe to try something else. read more

Took my wife on a date here for our 5 year anniversary, it is tomorrow but we went a day out early because we didn't know if places and this location would be open on sundays so we came out here today Saturday. Wife ordered jägerschnitzel I ordered chicken cordon bleu Meals were fantastical especially mine! I couldn't decide between 3 meals that's seemed interesting on the menu and I asked our server outta the 3 which did he recommended, he said the chicken cordon bleu was fantastic which it was. For drinks, waters and my wife had Spaten Oktoberfest and I had the cider STELLA ARTOIS (European style cider). My wife liked her drink I tried hers didn't like hers. We both liked my cider. We ordered dessert, she had forest cake and I got carrot. We sent it back and didn't pay for it. It was bad.My wife said hers was dry and my was like dough. I talked to the server about it said our meals were great what happened with the dessert? I asked if they make it there ? Or do they order it? Because if they ordered it they better stop that right away get somebody else. He said no they make it there. I said maybe you should let them know what's going on and people's thoughts. He said there is people on the line with different shifts maybe that's what happened because he said it's usually good he doesn't know what happened. He did take it off our bill. We sent the slices back. We took one bite off from each slice and it wasn't good in our opinions so we will be back for the actually main meals but desserts we will not order again from there. Place was nice German style. We ate in the back in a room near the non going fire place not near anyone because the COVID 19 pandemic going on. There was 1 table party on the one side and us on the other side of the room, other room in the middle near restrooms had a bunch of people in it. Usually I go in now asking for a distance away from a bunch of people usually far in a corner. Which we got. Server was great I'm glad he recommended the meal that I did order and I used the bread as appetizer that they brought out to swipe my plate clean. Sauce and food was excellent. Besides the desserts. Authentic German more or less. The pretzel and sausages seemed very fresh and well prepared. The bratwurst were very mild (more mild than I prefer). I like that I could order as many sides as I wanted with my meal for no additional charge. I enjoyed the dunkelweizen. It was cold and fresh, and was poured correctly in the correct glass. On a scale of 1 to 5, Alpine Chef is a 10. The food, service, and atmosphere were exceptional. We had the Wiener Schnitzel and Lamb Schnitzel. Both were outstanding and unusual with large portions of meat, not ground or shredded. The portions were large and beautifully presented. Two side dishes for each entree were included and they, too, were exceptional. Tasty potatoes, red cabbage, artfully prepared green beans were amply supplied so that we had leftovers to bring home. Our server was gracious and professional. The best thing about this restaurant, aside from gourmet food and wonderful ambiance was Sid, a consummate professional. There were many birthday and anniversary celebrations and the desserts and appetizers looked spectacular. My sister was visiting for my 60th birthday and took me here. We were both born in Bavaria so she thought it would be fun. It was outstanding! The moment we walked in we were greeted with warm smiles and taken right to our table. They even had it set up with a decorated "Happy 60th Steve" plate. Such a unique and comfortable environment right there in the train station. We ordered and the waitress cautioned us that it would be a lot of food. She wasn't kidding! With 6 entrees all the sides come family style so you can try a little of everything. I got the Alpine Schnitzel ...incredible! Potato pancakes highly recommended. Steaks were fantastic. I don't understand why this place was so crowded, even on a Saturday night. If you like heavy, greasy food and LOTS of potatoes, this place is for you. We went there for a friend's birthday on an invite. I got the Reuben, how can I go wrong? Thick slabs of meat, although tender, lacked cheese, sauerkraut and dressing...in a German restaurant! They ran out of silverware for our sides (many versions of potatoes), so we had to "double dip" using our own forks. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong dish? But shouldn't everything be good? My wife ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu...flavorless. I could do better, and I'm not a "chef". Nobody was impressed...party of 8...not one. Sorry...but I guess it's not for everyone. I had the opportunity to work in Germany and every time I step across the threshold of Alpine Chef I am instantly reminded of the fond memories I made while there. The staff is friendly and always so welcoming as if everyone that enters is just a part of their family. I love the huge homemade pretzels and German beer. It is a sure way to get the table started with great conversations. The entrees and sides are always so delicious with huge portions. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Not much at this point but I had the special privilege of holding my wedding reception here and everything was done PERFECTLY. The food choices, the beer and everything else was done to exactly what we had in mind for a party of 85 people. Come here for dinner or lunch or if you need to have a solid meal. TL;DR - it was great Went tonight for my niece's birthday. She maintains they have the best chicken tenders in the world (I didn't try them so I can't confirm). We started with the pretzel. It was pretty good, but the beer cheese was excellent. The alpine schnitzel was amazing- crispy, juicy, and tender pork in a rich complex sauce. Get the potato pancakes. Holy smokes. I had no room for dessert, but ordered the sachertorte anyway at the server's recommendation. Deep, dark, gooey chocolate torte balanced perfectly with tart raspberry sauce. This is the best dessert in Fredericksburg. Our server was great. She was warm, knowledgeable, and made the birthday girl feel very special. read more

We came in to give this restaurant a try on restaurant week, as this is a great way to try new eateries at a great price... Well, we now found another great F'burg "go-to" for great eats! Upon walking in, the first thing you notice is a very small bar, but a beautiful, large dining room to the left. The first dining area has beautiful stone walls and the second has a beautiful fireplace with a roaring fire. Our server was quick to greet us and since we like wine, she accommodated when we asked to taste a couple of options, which we ended up opting for. The one thing we really liked was that they don't use those small, glass-glass glasses for wine, like at other German restaurants, rather they use "real" wine glasses, which we prefer (it DOES make a difference!) Their menu is very nicely laid out in various sections according to the protein. They have many options and the items we chose came out very nicely plated and very tasted and authentic. Their sides are done family style and you can choose all you want! Their German potato salad was nicely done and tasty!! Their carrots were a little underdone and hard, but the style of preparation was tasty. Their green beans were amazing! The curry ketchup that was on the sausage was awesome, so was the mustard that came with the sausage!! Their bread basket was really nice, with various styles of breads, including pumpernickel and they came with a butter that was packed with herbs and flavor. Save room for dessert... We had a group of six on Saturday night. There was a big party in the main area so we were seated in the side room off of the bar. Service was slow. The main entrees were good but the sides were terrible. The sauerkraut was mushy with no flavor. The chicken cordon bleu was ok but the sauce had no flavor. My husband had the pork shank which was very good but the sauce and sauerkraut served with it were terrible. German potatoe salad was awful. They have a full bar but I would only suggest getting beer or wine. I got a margarita and it was terrible. I wouldn't come back or recommend. Just wasn't good. read more

I have eaten at the Alpine Chef many times and think the food is delicious with great service. The reason why I am writing this one star review because I was very disappointed to be turned away by the hostess this evening. I arrived at the restaurant tonight, Friday, December 10th around 520pm. The bar was full however the restaurant was empty. Out of the 40 tables in the entire restaurant only 3 tables were occupied. I was told they were fully booked with 530 and 630 reservations (did not see a line at the door) and hostess wanted to seat me in a secluded isolated dining area by the bar and front door. I sensed hostess was profiling me and did not want to seat me in the main dining room because I was a single female diner carrying a roller suitcase wearing very casual shoes. Hostess asked me if I was catching a train (I wasn't), walked away pretending to check table availability in the dining room then lied telling me there were no tables available ( but only 3 tables were occupied in a very big restaurant ) Hostess repeated my options - the isolated dining room by the front door or the bar which was very crowded. I have a very hard time believing the restaurant was fully booked with reservations for 530 and 630. The restaurant was empty with no line of people waiting outside the door for 530pm reservations. Since the hostess refused to seat me in the dining room of an empty restaurant that leaves me to the conclusion i was profiled for being a single female diner wearing casual shoes, carrying a roller suitcase coming home from the office just hungry to have delicious yagerschnitzel. Although the food is delicious I will never eat there again. Update: I ate at Brocks tonight, passed by the restaurant at 635pm looked through the window and dining room was still empty. What happened to those 530 and 630 reservations!?? And no line outside the door either! You should be ashamed of yourselves discriminating and judging single female diners like me who gave you lots of business in the past! read more

This past Sunday was our first visit to the Alpine Chef, after previously eaten at this location when it was the Bavarian Chef and having a good experience. Apparently not all things have changed for the better. Wanting to do something different, we opted to do Sunday brunch, after looking at the extensive and appetizing menu. We live outside Warrenton, so this involved an 80 mile round-trip which of course in Northern VA is aggravating on a good day. We made reservations for 11:30 several days prior, no problem. We arrived and were seated promptly. We noticed that none of the menus we were given had the Brunch items listed, so we asked our server. We were informed at that point that the regular Brunch menu is not available, due to it being Restaurant Week. We could, however choose the one option available, the Brunch for Two, at $25.00 per person. No, I did not drive all the way here to have Donut Balls, Mueslix, Yogurt, and a side of Bacon, which is essentially what you get for $50.00. When asked why this was, we received a generic "Because of Restaurant Week" reply. We specifically came here for the Brunch, as it looked really good. If for whatever reason the decision was made not to have that menu, why were we not told this when we made our reservations, just a few days earlier? You could have saved us the trip and the aggravation. So, not wanting a full lunch because that is not why we came in the first place, we just opted to leave and call it a day. If we are in the mood for German food in the near future, needless to say we will be trying the other choice in Fredericksburg. read more

Our family has frequented this establishment for many years now (even back when it was Bavarian Chef). We've never ever been disappointed. The service is bar none, the atmosphere is fantastic, and the food...TO DIE FOR! Today I enjoyed the special: Mediterranean Sea Bass over a bed of couscous with hollandaise sauce, bacon and cabbage. Holy moly! I love it! My usual go-to meals are either the salmon or the rainbow trout. None of these will disappoint! My mother and my husband each had a nice steak meal and were very pleased too. I have been to Germany many, many times and I think I just had the best, most authentic German meal I've ever had in America- in Fredericksburg VA of all places! I started with the beer flight (only one of their many choices was unavailable: a sign of a well run bar). I ordered the seasonal asparagus soup "cup" that came out in a bowl: my lucky day as it was delicious. Went on to the Chicken Schnitzel with the Paprika Rahm Sauce (creamy mildly spiced gravy) with a side of whipped potatoes. It was so good I was part of the way into it before I remembered to take a picture, and I wanted to lick the plate afterwards. My son ordered the Nuremberg Wurst plate, perfectly cooked and balanced with the sides. But the winner was my friend who had the good sense to order the flagship braised pork shank Schweinshaxe. Oh boy, it was perfect: crispy outside, tender inside, awesome gravy, fried onions: close your eyes and you would have been in Munich. With a liter of lager it crushed all of our choices - and they were each tremendous. All the sides came out family style. Our server, Madison, was prompt, friendly, attentive, cheerful and thoughtful: she even wrote out a cheat sheet for my beer flight on a spare order ticket.
