Service (5/5) We were a party of 7 in town for sports event. Charles treated our party exceptionally well. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Rather than serving 1-2 sides per meal, Charles offered up one of each side, served family style. Great experience. Food (5/5) We ordered a German Sausage Platter, Alpine Schnitzels (chicken), Alpine Sandwiches, and Reuben Sandwich (opted for potato pancakes as a side) and two $11 pretzels to share. Serving sizes are generous across the board. Pretzels alone were worth the trip. Excellent flavors all around - from pretzels to sides to main courses. I'm not an expert in German food, I trust other reviewers who say the food is authentic. Atmosphere (3/5**) Feels like you're on vacation. Old World Europe vibe with high ceilings and private rooms. **Why not 5 Stars? The floor in the men's room was so dirty I didn't want to wear my shoes in the car on the way home. The floor needs a thorough cleaning and better upkeep. This is the dirtiest bathroom floor I've seen in a restaurant, should be addressed.

Love the authentic swag. I wish they sold this.

This is an interesting place. It's in an old train station and architecture reflects that. There is a lot of real German swag around the place that gives it authenticity. The confusing part of the restaurant is it can't seem to decide if it's a fancy restaurant with $36 entrees or a hotdog place. That said, the pretzel was delightful. I can see coming for apps and drinks and skipping the entrees altogether.

This is a cool spot. I lived in Germany for a few years and this did give those European vibes when you go inside. The staff is super friendly and our waiter was awesome. The food was hot and miss. The pretzel and cheese sooo good! We got a regular sized one but you can get one that's 2lbs to share with friends. The risotto was yummy but there was so much cheese it was a fight to eat it. The schnitzel was a table favorite and sadly the beef tips were a total miss. Sides all delicious! Overall a great experience and I highly recommend giving it a try!

We were returning from a road trip to Midlothian Virginia, and were passing through Fredericksburg around dinner time, so we thought we'd check out the Alpine Chef. I lived in Germany for 9 years (3 different 3-year periods), and I really enjoy good German cuisine. We called ahead for a reservation. We arrived right on time, and our table was ready to go. The main dining area was neat and clean, and the decor was very nice. The tables were not too close together, so it was easy for staff to get around the restaurant. The menu looked very promising and they had some specials as well as it was restaurant week. They have a good selection of German beers and wines. I ordered a draft Hefeweizen (it was Paulaner this week-it rotates). Everything on the menu looked appetizing. We ordered a pretzel appetizer, which came out with a nice warm pretzel with German mustard and a cheese sauce to dip. It was very good. I ordered the Jaegerschnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle as the sides. My wife had the Swiss Sauerbraten, with the same sides. The food came out nice and hot. I had two cutlets on top of the mushroom gravy/sauce. I would have liked a little more of the sauce, and I love to dip the spaetzle in it. But it was pretty good. My wife enjoyed the sauerbraten, but she thought the spaetzle weren't quite up to her expectations. Mine seemed fine though. We ordered some dessert as well - German chocolate cake and apfel strudel. The cake was very good and had some chocolate sauce drizzle so it was super chocolaty. The strudel was good. The only big downside for me was the state of the restrooms. They definitely needed a deep cleaning and maybe some maintenance. Floor was pretty nasty - just not clean at all. Given how the rest of the restaurant looked this was really way below why I'd expect. I don't think someone would want this sort of thing to be the big memory of the restaurant, but it's hard to forget it. So - good food, pretty fair pricing, pretty nice ambiance, but not so good restrooms. I'd definitely stop here again, but I think I'd be hoping there was some attention given to the restrooms.

Second time here on a busy winter Sunday. I still love the interior but would prefer sitting in the room by the fireplace as it's more charming and cozy. We weren't offered that option but we sensed it was for larger parties. I think they nail the main dishes. I had brats with onion and sauerkraut which was incredible and this time my other half had the chicken cordon bleu which is served more like a Schnitzel with ham and cheese on top. Side dishes are generally ok but not great. We took a bite or two and that was it. Service is very friendly but we thought it was a little slow. 4 star experience and we would still return.

Best restaurant in Fredericksburg. I've never had a bad meal here. Highly recommend the red cabbage.

It was even more awkward because there were many empty tables in the bigger dining room and only one other party was seated there. We were also a party of 4. But the service and the food were awesome. We had appetizers of a very savory and huge pretzel with beer cheese and mustard sauces to dip it in. And sausage sampler's. Also very tasty. We decided to go there to honor my youngest son, Shane, who passed away a few years back, for what would have been his 52nd birthday. It was a wonderful experience and memory of past visits there with him and his family.

The entire meal I was looking at three empty tables across the dining room. The area is cramped. The wallpaper is peeling. There is grime on the bathroom doors. The view into the kitchen is unglamorous. Our server was reserved and underwhelming. I asked her what she could suggest for a vegetarian. There is one dish - with mushrooms. I asked if the green beans were cooked with ham. She said no and asked if I had food allergies. No allergies - I said I don't eat ham. The server said the beans had stewed tomatoes & mushrooms. I asked if they could leave the mushrooms off. She said, "Yes, if you pick them off." What? I ordered the French onion soup. I told the server I don't eat meat but I can tolerate beef broth. That was her invitation to say they use pork broth in the soup, but she didn't. Hubby ordered the Jager Schnitzel. He enjoyed the veal. The red cabbage was his favorite (he pulled out a bay leaf). The French onion soup tasted off. The creamed corn had three huge pieces of what I assume were husks. Otherwise it was good. The green beans were decent. I picked out the mushrooms. We were overlooked in the back. Hubby asked for a manager when he noticed I wasn't eating my soup. We were surprised that our server was the manager. There wasn't anything in her demeanor that demonstrated leadership or being outgoing. She removed the soup charge off the bill. When we had gaps in service, we asked another server for help (sharp knife, bag, lemons). Paying was a challenge. It is easy to be overlooked in the back of the restaurant. When we left, the hostess asked how we enjoyed the meal. I started to share. She said, "I'm still talking." I wish we hadn't gone inside. The idea of visiting the Bavarian Chef was much better than the actual experience.
