My friend has a pass here and I've been wanting to get back into skiing so I booked a lesson with a friend. We got there early and was out with coach Tom. He was awesome! He showed us the basics and knew we had a little bit of experience before (over 12 years for me) but we wanted to start at the beginning. After we got the basics down, we were heading up the bunny hill. It was scary at first, but having coach Tim in front showing us what to do, made me feel confident. Before I knew it I was going down the blue hill! We had gone down probably 5 times at this point and we had to check out hr après ski life. We ordered a drink and the bartender had me turns onto a 007! It was a perfect light and flavorful drink! I loved their featured menu but man that drink was delicious. Before we fully warmed back up we were back in the slopes. After a few more times down and my friend was trying out her tricks, we had worked up an appetite. We went down to the food area and we ordered at the window. I asked the gentlemen behind the order window and he said the while was a must try. So we ordered the fries and chili and man was he right. The chili was AMAZING! All the food was delicious. It reminded me of a good bar food menu. The place has a ton of space for everyone and the slopes and lifts themselves were clean and beautiful. Let's start off by calibrating this review to local/nearby Michigan slopes. Not trying to compare to the ski mountains in CO, CA, etc. With that level set, Alpine Valley was a great experience! Lift tickets and rentals here were a good amount cheaper than nearby Brighton, and easy to get walk up (I actually don't think they do online pre-sales). We went on a Saturday after a Fool's Spring week here (ie it was very warm all week with no snow), and I was decently surprised by the snow they had created there. Was a little disappointing that they hadn't put out fresh snow overnight, so it was getting thin and a bit slushy in some areas (especially on the blue runs), but black runs were still fluffy. Not a lot of lift/run options but there is something for everyone from brand new beginners to more advanced things like a slalom course, moguls, and ramp things (clearly I am not an advanced skier). Nothing is TOO hard. I'm a beginner and can pizza and turn my way down the blacks here. Especially as there weren't too many people the day we went. I would come back for more practice! Cafe and bar options are solid. Typical American food, but the chili cheese fries are actually really good. Also got a hot dog and a beer that was very refreshing. Indoor and outdoor options for seating. They had a shop onsite as well in case you forgot or needed some gear, and convenient/easy parking. read more

Not a bad spot. Pricing is decent, more affordable then some other ski lodges in the area. Lift ticket was $56 and ski and snowboard rental was $35. They have a lodge area with a cafeteria and some basic snacks. I think they also have spirits and other refreshments. Locker area takes 2 quarters to lock every time you open it, but the cubby is kind of small. We fit three pairs of shoes and a grocery bag but I tried to fit a small gym bag and it didn't fit. Slopes are pretty versatile, some more double black diamonds for those who like ramps and an extra challenge. And they also have ski patrol roaming around for safety. read more

For a beginner and our 1st time to be here...Alpine Valley Ski resort is so far a great place to start learning how to ski or snowboard. We arrived around 10am to avoid the crowd. Parking was free and halfway full. Paid for the use for the beginners' slope from the morning till 530pm of the same day for $36++ Bought our 2nd hand boards from play it again sports, 50%off goggles and helmets at Dunham's. If we want to use rentals, it will cost $29 for the skis/boards and $10 for helmets. So the ski lifts are there. It looks scary for the chairs to be swinging back and forth and moving fast, about 10-15 feet above the ground. To keep my self warm, I took my boots off and sat close to the fire place located in the cafeteria. Chicken fingers, pizza, soda and energy drinks are available for short consumption. Most important to keep yourself geared up because it's cold here. Layers and layers of clothing and gloves at all times. Bring a hand warmer on hand because there is no place for heaters once you are above the mountains or hills. Easy to freeze any part of your body in seconds Anyways, good times ahead. Went skiing on MLK day, a great day to ski; cold, sunny with no wind after a large weekend snow fall. So I was really pumped to hit the slopes with my son and his friend, however I was disappointed with the lack of open lifts. Only chairs 4, 5 and 7 were open when we arrived at 10am, which limits skiers to less than 50% of the terrain. Chair 2 didn't open till 3:30pm, so my boys where limited in skiing their favorite trail with the banked race track down to the last part of their visit. For me, my biggest disappointment was that chair 8, Mt. Everest didn't open till 1pm because it was being groomed the whole morning I was there. This is my favorite run, because it's the closest hill that you can use to work on rhythm and timing needed to carry your speed on larger mountains. This run should have been groomed in the early morning or the night before. Then, it would be ready for the daily skiers that were charged full weekend premium lift ticket prices. I've been skiing Alpine for over 30 years and it's my go to place when I want to strap on my board/skies in metro Detroit. Alpine Valley usually has it right, but yesterday they did NOT have their A game on. I hope they take notice and improve delivering what skiers expect. It's always a please to carve some slopes here , keep a look out for their Groupon specials because that all day pass deal is king. The slopes are well groomed and their employees are very nice. Their lodge isn't the most updated lodge between the three other ski resorts in the metro detroit area, but their funability is pretty good. Great deals on pitchers of beer, that's always a good thing specially when taking a break from shredding the slopes. Need a quick bite to eat??? Try their grilled cheese sandwich, you can never go wrong with a good grilled cheese sandwich. Great thing about this resort is that the staff is very attentive,, i lost a glove and they immediately did a sweep of the area to see if there was a missing glove anywhere,,, and they found it. Would I write the same review is they didn't find it?? Of course!!! The fact of the matter that they went out did a sweep meant they were all about the customer. Go Alpine!! Low quality ski runs. Two runs were open when we went. If all the runs were open it still would have not been worth it. They are not skillful or long. Weekend ski is something like $65. Should be like $20. Would not come here again unless they lowered prices a lot. Alpine Valley competitors have much better ski runs. read more

Rented snow boards an bought lift tickets X2. $200! Then only a few lifts are open and the beginner area is a complete disaster. There were so many people you had to dodge them constantly, it was impossible to enjoy a run without fear of being ran into. That place should have every area open or limit admission by at least 50%. I'm an experienced snow boarder and let's be clear anywhere you go in michigan sucks! However I am able to set aside the fact that there's nothing but large hills around here and give an honest review! I have never been to alpine valley before this day, and I can proudly say I would totally go back. The runs were nice. Prices just as comparable to any other resort around here and The staff was really friendly! I liked how the runs gave you some play room and weren't a straight boring shot to the bottom. They had a cross track groomed out and it was by far my favorite part. Lots of rails jumps and even a half pipe. I'm a fan. Good job AV read more

Always a pleasure coming here. It is just the beginning of the season so the snow is not really there yet. But for being a warm day they had 3 lifts open and enough runs to get your money's worth. This was our first time going on the slopes for the season so we just wanted to shake off the cob webs and get back to the swing of things before we go hardcore somewhere. The lodge area has a nice fireplace to hang out at and warm up. They have a cafeteria and a bar area. Alpine Valley is one of four active ski areas that are within an hour of the metro Detroit area. Like the other three ski areas, Alpine was a former gravel pit that was converted to a ski area. In its new incarnation, it's a fun winter destination not too far from the city. Most of the ski runs face east and have a good amount of trees lining them. This means that Alpine typically keeps its snow better and longer than the other local areas. However, the down side is that the runs at Alpine are probably the least challenging of all the local ski areas. Also, Alpine Valley is the least accessible of all local ski areas with the closest freeway being about 10 miles away through the archaic maze of Oakland County's lakes area. The terrain park at Alpine Valley is the largest in the area. Both skiers and snowboarders are welcome in the terrain park. Two of the older double chair lifts were recently (five to ten years ago) replaced with modern triple person chairlifts. In addition to these newer chairlifts, there are five double chairs on the main slope and one four person chairlift. The four person chairlift serves the Everest run, which is the longest and steepest pitch on the hill. The top of this run is narrow and can get icy on crowded days. No worries though, there is an easy back way down from the top of the four person lift. Even though the trail map shows two more additional double lifts off to the side of the main ski area, these lifts are rarely open and serve short beginner runs. The lodge has basic cafeteria style dining with average quality food. The lounge on the top floor of the lodge is reserved for guests 21 or over which can be a nice retreat on evening when the local schools have their weekly outings. read more

They have really good terrain parks and intermediate hills and black, but onetime I was on the ski lift with a friend and the ski lift stopped for around 20 minutes. They also need to add rail guards on too all of the ski lifts. Still would recommend though. read more

Very disappointed that after researching several ski resorts in the area to stop at on our way to a short family get away from Ohio that I choose Alpine Valley for our stop! It is clearly run down and there is little care or communication among the majority of the staff we encountered. Most were friendly but completely uninformed which made our visit very frustrating from the start! I had called while driving to ask if they'd have football on in the lodge so the non -skiers could watch the bowl games while others skied. I was told they have several tvs but they weren't sure what games would be playing and there are no phones in the lodge to connect to talk with someone directly. They said it was likely they'd be showing an important football game like that. We arrived and this is what we encountered: Not only was there no game on, they no longer have ANY TVs anywhere in the lodge! We were told they were removed several months ago and never replaced. But that wasn't the only frustration. The person passing out rental equipment didn't know the difference between ski boots versus snow board boots and time was wasted having to change everything after putting on the wrong boots. The food we were given was cold. No one knew the hours of the food area and overall, the indoor spaces were dirty. I did appreciate the helpful people in the store and the explanation that the resort is under new ownership since the summer. However it seems ridiculous to not be in a better place 4+ months later during the prime ski season! read more

The employees here are super helpful when it came to figuring out what equipment to rent and what would be best fit for our needs. If this is your first time skiing or snowboarding just be prepared to eat a lot of snow... I mean a lot. It was so exciting make sure to start on the "Bunny" hill if it's your first time. Made the mistake of tryna roll with the big dogs, took a real big flip. So just be mindful. Even the "bunny hill" is still thrilling. read more

I spent $2700 on multi pass season tickets for my family. Went to pick them up and they weren't ready as they indicated. Secondarily, told me I had to pay three dollars per arm band to hold the passes whereas they didn't charge this last year. Just the fact that they are going to ding us for another three dollars per arm band, after we spent such an enormous amount of money for tiny hills, is unacceptable. This is absolutely, positively the WORST ski hill I have ever been to. It has antiquated lifts, runs that are not challenging whatsoever, inattentive lift operators, and bad cafeteria food. Their "black" runs are like greens anywhere else. I thought the lift was going to fall apart while I was on it. The restrooms and locker room were filthy and smelly. The worst was our experience with the lift operators. My friend's ski fell off as she boarded. The lift operator kept it running at full speed and handed my friend the ski. Now what in the hell is she going to do at the top?! When we got to the top, Smoking Jimmy the operator was too busy taking a drag to notice my friend. She face-planted right off the chair. He kept the lift running while he continued to smoke and chair after chair of skiers kept running over my friend. I will never go back to this dump. read more

My husband took me skiing for the first time here. Alpine isn't far from our house so it's convenient to come skiing after work without wasting much time driving. The prices seems reasonable, they have men and women's days with discounts. On a Monday at 7pm, the bunny hill was empty except for a little girl getting a lesson, so that was really nice. Overall the place seems a little old- the parking lot has a lot of potholes and lodges are a little run down but I didn't spend any time in them! Worth it to me while learning! read more

Terrible, disorganized an so unprofessional ski school and instructors. We booked a lesson for our 4 year old granddaughter in the 4 - 6 class. We had fumble our way to find where to go. Then try to figure out who th teachers were...all just standing around talking to each other. Couldn't hear anything as the teenagers don't know how to speak up and they have to wear masks. Sooo...no introductions, no moving away from the packed area where snowboarders continued to fly through. Then the move to the carpet and leave our girl behind. We bring her over, with people cutting on front of her (an actual snowboard instructor an student being one such rude group). It was maddening. We finally get to the carpet and there is nobody to help her. She lost it and started crying. Game over for her 1st outing. Hot chocolate helped. Lesson was in about 10 min so I went in to get our $60 Back. Well it was a hard no but I was relentless and adamant with my dissatisfaction. An older instructor offered to work with her but it was too late. We hit a partial refund so that's better than nothing. So fisappointing... read more

Dangerous place... if you want to ski in Southeast MI (especially with children). I witnessed a child hanging from a chairlift. It looked like the child was not on the seat all the way and then fell to the ground after hanging from the side bar. The woman with the child (assuming mother) needed assistance getting down as it looked too high to jump. Another skiier in the line helped them both. It did not look like the chair lift operator knew what to do and there were no ski patrollers around the scene. It was "Mardi Gras" day at Alpine Valley. There were family festivities going on. I witnessed 2 patrollers in uniform walking and drinking what looked liked bloody mary drinks. At the top of chair lift # 8 (Everest run) , my partner and I smelled marijuana. It was clearly coming from the chairlift operatoring shed at chair # 8. Safety nets near top of chairlifts are ripped apart and nonfunctional. Be careful in the parking lot as it is dangerously loaded with holes. read more

This is a place with a small hill and lift but beyond that there isn't much positive to say about the place. I have been skiing for several years and even learned to ski here as a kid. Taking my kids here over the holidays was not my best idea! With very few lifts open and not that great of snow actually on the ground versus the snow reported over the phone it seemed more like they were just trying to get the customers to come regardless of the bad conditions. The serves was even worse! There is no getting around how bad my entire family was treated. My kids can hold their own on most of the runs and my friend was new to skiing and snowboarding and I was ultimately there to help them have a good time and enjoy the sport, but that was not going to happen. One of the two chair lifts is a total safey hazard with a clearing bar at the top of the hill that will rip your skies off or you off of the chair if you dont get off the chair at the top. The staff has no idea what they are doing much less understand how to stop or even slow the lifts incase of injury or pile ups at the top or bottom of the lifts. My friend was injured and quite dazed when the bar pulled her skies back and quickly yanked them off the lift face first. They dropped about 8 feet to the hard ground as there was no real snow beyond the exit ramp. The tenet didn't even slow the chairs and even as people yelled to him he didn't know what to do. I would say the professionalism and condition of the resort is run-down and lacking leadership in their management thus the employees they are have are unmotivated and not there to support or even provide a safe environment to enjoy a fun winter sport. The ski patrol is not at all proactive or willing to confirm injury and instead chose to yell from 30meters away to see if we needed any help. As a former ski patrol person in Washington and Korea, I have an understanding and expectation of how they should act and even react but after 10-12 minutes of them trying to communicate by yelling from 30meters away instead of just coming over I gave up and my anger took hold and blew them off and I helped the injured party down the hill myself. The lodge has a nice fire but it is not kept burning and you may have to ask even beg them to stoke the fire. But it does offer some nasty food at best, bring in McDonalds at least it's cheaper and right outside the entrance. As for the bar, we didn't even bother after all that and additional medication was found at Billy's! I cannot and will not recommend this place to friends, it is better to not ski or snowboard then to go here and be treated with disrespect endure over pricing and uneducated staff! Take the time to drive South of Cleveland area to Brandy wine Boston mills it's safer, and the staff and management at least care that you have a good experience at a small resort. read more

What an experience my boys had today! They were so excited to go skiing as it was a no school snow day, and only wanted to go back to Alpine.. After dropping them off and almost getting back home I received a phone call to please pick them up as nothing was open, or groomed. Not even the half pipe. I called and spoke with a pleasant person in the main office and she told me to tell the boys to look for the hills that were open, and there were plenty, so I did upon her request. I received another call to please pick them up as it was awful because of nothing being groomed, or lift or hill closures. I drove the 45 minutes back, and went to the office where I met and spoke to Gail the resort manager, she offered to give me a house credit as they don't offer returns, I wasn't pleased with that as I had called to inquire about the conditions right when I received the first call of complaint from my boys, but accepted it. I had the boys meet me in the office, where Gail had rudely said " I will do this for you this time, but this isn't normal procedure, and will never do this again, she continued to speak in an unbelievably rude way, and I actually had to tell her that I didn't care for how rude she was speaking to my kids, she then ripped the tickets away from my children's hands!" The tone that she used was rude, disrespectful, and very much unprofessional. I was in the service industry for thirty years and can't image talking with a paying customer the way she did to my boys and myself. Shocking!! I will NEVER EVER go back here, not Because of the hill or lift conditions but because of the unprofessionalism she portrayed. This is shameful shameful behavior, and very poor business ethics. read more

My friend & I took our skis to the pro shop to have them tuned up. The guy in the pro shop was so rude. We got into the parking lot & I was bothered by his crappy attitude. So I went back in & told him to give me the skis back because I was going to take them somewhere else. He never apologized or made eye contact with me. I think he was under the impression that he was doing me aa favor by taking my money in exchange for his poor attitude. I took them to Pine Knob and they were so nicee & helpful. read more
