Browsed Yelp for AC mechanic, found 2 with perfect rating and Al's was one. Called but no one answered, I got a call back and scheduled a day to drop off my car. Forgot about the appointment. Called the next day and was lucky enough to get squeezed in. PEP BOYS quote for more than 2k to replace AC compressor for my car. I asked them to at least troubleshoot and not replace stuff. They said they cant save it. Yeah, right! Took my car to Al's expecting I wont have it for at least couple of days cause they're packed. They're Navy veterans and I'm Navy active duty, shared our Navy stories. Left the shop and less than 2 hrs later, Al called and said to pick up the car and AC is fixed. They charged me little compared to the 2k from Pep Boys. He asked me to bring the car back after 2 weeks just so he can check it. Talk about number 1 in customer service in Auto Repair Shop. Al is the most honest man/mechanic! I seriously couldn't own a car now a days bec you just can't work on a car with all the computers etc. He charges a third of what dealers charge. Finally got around to write this review/story. All of this began a few years ago, when I heard some humming noises in our 4Runner. I thought that the wheel bearing was damaged and was about to fall apart, but there were no immediate problems that followed after I noticed the hum. Thus, I thought that the problem might be in the back wheel rack/bridge. However, the car had only 120K miles at the time, so I thought nothing of the problem, until the hum turned into a jet engine roar (this happened at 150K; we have been servicing the car at the official dealerships the whole time between these two mile points we have been servicing the car at the official dealerships). No one at the dealerships told us that there are any problems until we told them about the hum ourselves, and asked them to address it. They fixed the issue, or so we thought. They changed both of the rear wheel bearings for $1700. However, after we got our car back, there was absolutely no change, so we returned to the dealership with the same complaint. Upon some arguing, we got the dealership to look into the issue, and they found out that the hum was still there, and that the hum might also stem from the transmission. They gave us our money back, and recommended to search for a private mechanic. Eventually, a friend of mine recommended AL'S AUTO REPAIR, and boy we were lucky. He quickly found the problem, which tuned out to be a bearing in the back bridge, and its source (without immediately telling us that we need to simply replace the whole back bridge like any retailer would): a bent shaft. Also, he pointed out that the transmission fluid was low, so he added it. Afterwards, the car stopped jerking and jumping when switching gears, like it did before. I was recommended to AL'S by a co worker I was looking for a reasonable price for an oil change because the quotes I got for other places were really high for my 2005 Volvo. So I spoke to Al and his price beat them all. Before I could get the oil change I ended up having other issues with my vehicle. It wasn't holding ant-freeze and had over heated so I took it to him. He looked at it for free and told me that the water pump / timing belt needed to be replaced but he did not know the extent of the damage and warned me that it may worse than just the water pump and timing belt it may also be a blown head gasket. It turned out to be just that. The fact that he was honest and told me straight up the issue and what He could do and what options I had was refreshing and sincere it made me me feel comfortable with him doing the work. Being a woman makes you nervous when faced with these situations because most mechanics will take advantage of you but with Al I didn't feel that way at all and he helped me tremendously and I am so grateful for his service because he fixed my car and I am back on the road again. Al has been our mechanic for many years now. His knowledge and honesty are above reproach. He's worked on everything from our MB to Escalade to Saab and everything in between we own. He knows how to diagnose and repair properly and give you your baby back the way it was before it broke. I bought a 2008 Honda civic for my son and asked Al to evaluate it and then repair the deficiencies. In a very diplomatic way, he identified the problems, and I felt very confident that he had caught all of the key issues. I then asked him to effect the repairs. Well, where do I begin? Al and RJ saved my truck. I really was not sure they would be able to do what they did--but I drove in with a serious problem, left my truck, and the next day it was repaired far beyond my expectations. Both RJ and Al are very knowledgable (it really shows), and honest (and that shows as well)--and RJ was extremely personable. I had two other vehicles that needed repair, and they fixed my daughter's car in a day. There are some underlying issues that I cannot afford at the moment, but they got it running and worked to show me how the other repairs could be done affordably in the future. Did I mention that they worked hard to keep their fees reasonable? I could not be happier. I brought my truck in after a whining noise from the rear got progressively worse. Al was very busy, but too the time to go for a ride and hear the noise in my truck. He immediately diagnosed the problem and we set up an appointment. Told me it would take 3 days to complete the work. Looking the amount of cars on his property I thought for sure it'd be more like 5-7 just to get to my vehicle. Well, the next day Al called to tell me he had it all fixed and ready to go! He also found my wheel bearing was shot and replaced that too. Al saved all the damaged parts for me to inspect so I knew exactly what they looked like. Also, Al was very close to his quoted cost. Phenomenal service! Driving home, my alternator was showing signs of failing. I googled mechanics near my house and Al's had good reviews. I called, and even though they were already closed, Al told me to bring the car by anyway and he'd take a look at it. The moment I pulled into his parking lot my car died. He got it into his garage, diagnosed the problem, and said he'd fix it the next day (which was a Sunday). Then his wife offered to give me a ride home so I didn't have to call my husband. So nice! The next day he called and my car was all fixed up and ready to be picked up. I have found my go-to mechanic! Update. I took the car in to check the oil leak. At first Al thought I had not tightened the oil filter enough the last time I changed the oil/filter. Upon further inspection he determined that the filter itself was faulty. He replaced the filter on the spot and topped the oil. I checked later the same day and found no drips. (Phew.) So far so good, but at this time I think the dripping has been fixed. read more

I had received a vehicle from a friend that sat in his garage for 25 years. The first place I took it to mad ea mess out of the vehicle. If only I had known about Al First. I am sure it would have been done correctly and probably more affordable the first time around. Three carburetors later, Al diagnosed and went far and above the call of duty on this carburetor. I took my car to Al's because they were close and convenient. After taking my Nissan to then, I'll be taking my care there because they are HONEST, and do great work. Initially,we thought my car had a cracked head gasket a $1600 job, but instead of going with the quick and expensive diagnosis, Al took the time to further diagnose my car and found I only needed a new radiator!!! They saved me a mortgage payment!! Shortly after taking my car there my A/C went out, Al pretty much charged it for me for free!!! I brought my 2008 Honda Civic to Al because it was overheating. Upon inspection, Al told me that the engine block was cracked and leaking water. I was very upset, due to it still being a fairly new car. Al advised me that this was a manufacturers defect, informed me of the bulletin from Honda and told me to call the dealership. I called the service department, gave them my information and to my excitement, Honda told me that the new engine block would be fully covered. Thanks to Al for the information. Also, I have brought all my vehicles to Al in the past. He has repaired my 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan, extending its usage for an extra couple of years. And, my 1998 Honda Civic initially did not pass smog, Al located the problem within minutes and corrected it no problem. Al is honest and fair. I cannot wait till I get home to make a review, so I am typing this at work. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for Al's Auto Repair. My car stopped on the road and wouldn't start for nothing so I had it towed to my repair man that I go to in Brentwood. He said I need a new alternator and w/ labor and parts, it's going to cost me $1200.00. I was devastated so I asked around. My dad and co-worker recommend the same place which is Al's Auto Repair. I have heard about this place but I trusted my "repair man" in Brentwood that I didn't even bother to go to Al's Auto Repair before for other stuff. I finally called this place and spoke to RJ. He roughly estimated it to be between $600-$700. I towed my car to them. I got a phone call after a day or two from RJ, and he said that they found the problem - which is just a wiring issue and that it would cost me $260.00. He just made my day! Friendly and knowledgeable!!! I was on the hunt for a new mechanic in the local area. Stopped by one obviously corporate owned place, they said to come back and make an appointment and took a few minutes to give me a price quote. That's all fine but not what I was looking for. Then I came to Al's, pull up in the driveway and tell him my problem, he dropped what he was doing to check out a quick diagnostic. Then give me an estimate for the full diagnostic (which was cheaper than the corporate owned place to boot!) and repairs and when I could come back or just leave it there at that time. That's the kind of passion I was looking for in a mechanic. I appreciate the drive for troubleshooting that Al exemplified.
