UPDATE: Al actually reached out and wanted to make things right about my tire. He let me know he was going to honor our phone conversation and install a Perelli tire. Al said to bring my bike back in, and he'd swap out the tire at no additional charge. I brought my bike in for the swap and it was all smooth. I appreciate Al wanting to make things right and just shows he is running an honest business. Bike is running great. Thanks, Al. Brought in my Sportster for much needed maintenance. Al was friendly, responsive, and took note of all I asked him to have look at. Upon his team's evaluation, Al contacted me with a text message of work order recommendations. We then chatted on the phone and we walked through the proposed work. In the end, I got an oil/filter change, spark plugs, primary oil, new battery, rear brake change, and a new rear tire. Much needed maintenance. So far the bike is riding great! TIME: In total, I brought my bike in on Saturday afternoon and all work was completed by the following Tuesday afternoon (they're closed Sundays). So about 2 business days. Barring any unforeseen problems, I would say this was a swift and speedy experience. CONS: I think the pricing was a bit on the higher end. Although, because I had a lot of work done all at the same time, it seemed to be a better value. Also, when I spoke with Al on the phone, he mentioned they would probably be installing a Michelin or Pirelli rear tire. What I got was a cheaper Shinko tire. Not a bad tire, but still, not what I had expected. I would ask them to be more up front about the products they are ultimately going to install on your bike. I'd say a tire is a pretty important piece of your bike and you should know what you're getting. In the end, I chose not to make an issue of it and I'm happy with the overall experience. The shop has a family owned and run vibe. Al and his wife are very nice and I think this is appealing from a customer service perspective. The people at Al's Cycle Shop are some of the most skilled and kind-hearted people on Earth! My GF and I were on our way home from a friend's house when the chain to her '10 Kawasaki Ninja 250R Special Edition snapped on us while we were on the freeway. Thank goodness that her skills as a motorcyclist saved our butts and we were able to pull off to the shoulder of the freeway to safety. We had a tow truck leave the bike across the street from Al's Cycle Shop as we got dropped off at home nearby. The morning after we explained our situation to the awesome people at Al's and had my GF's bike inspected on the spot for no charge. The bike definitely needed some upgrades/new parts, but we also would not have been able to pay for everything right away. However, we were able to strike up an amazing deal to replace the broken chain and sprocket after we told them about our situation. We are both recently unemployed, our car broke down not too long ago, and so the bike was our only form of transportation to and from gigs/one of my GF's sources of happiness. Not only did the mechanics fix what we agreed to be fixed, but they also helped us adjust the bike to better handle my weight for when I ride on the back. They were very kind, courteous, and professional. We are definitely coming back here to finish fixing the bike in the upcoming weeks. Thank you people at Al's Cycle Shop! TL;DR The owner Al and his crew are very friendly people, but the shop is understaffed, overburdened, disorganized, and service is extremely slow. Might be fine for an oil change, chain lube, or other small, quick job, but I'd look elsewhere if you have bigger or more complex job. MY EXPERIENCE After a distracted cager crashed into my motorcycle (please stay off your cell phone's while driving, people!), I went to Al's to get my bike repaired. The front end was smashed in and needed replacing. Al and his son Anthony were very communicative in this early stage and were great while we were working with the driver's insurance company to get properly paid for the damage. Once paid we decided to pull a complete front end off a parts bike rather than replacing everything with OEM parts (which would have been more $$). Al was great at this point, finding the parts at a junkyard for a fair price. No complaints up til this point, I was thinking I had found my new go-to moto shop! However, this is when things start going a little wonky. A week or two goes by without word from Al about the bike. When I call in, he says it turns out the front end that I paid for was actually missing a part, the front wheel, and he was trying to source a new one. I would've liked to be kept in the loop, but no biggie this one time, he's still working hard to get me a replacement wheel. Another week goes by. No update. I call again. He says there is no wheel to be found anywhere, and that we're better off straightening my current wheel. He says he'll send it to his guy in Anaheim that does that kind of work and get it back within a week. I'm still OK at this point. Setbacks happen, and I appreciate that Al is trying to get it done. However, another week goes by with no word. When I call in, Al says he is just about to send it down to the guy. OK, I'm getting a bit frustrated at this point. The next week he says the wheel is down there getting straightened, but he hasn't picked it up yet. He tells me it will be ready soon. Another week goes by, it's still not done. You get the picture at this point. I'm very antsy. I should add at this point that I do not own a car and commute everyday by motorcycle. I had to borrow a car during this whole time, a fact which I made clear to Al from day one and constantly reiterated to provide a sense of urgency and timeliness to the work. The last straw for me was when I talked to Al and he said my wheel had finally come back straightened and they were about to finish the bike soon. A couple of days go by and I didn't hear anything, so I decided to stop in. To my surprise I see my bike outside, absolutely filthy, and with almost nothing done to it. I asked Al what is the hold up, why is my bike still not done? He looked a bit embarassed and said that he had actually lost the front brake rotor and that they could not finish the job until they found it. I said well what if you can't find it? And he said that he would order me a new one to replace it, which he eventually did, a couple of days later. Even though Al is a wonderful, nice guy, I no longer had confidence in his ability to get my bike fixed. It was taking way too long, there were too many mistakes along the way, and although he never lied, his communication towards the end of our experience together felt more guarded and defensive, like he was trying to cover up his mistakes. At this point my bike had been at Al's for 63 days! I told Al that I was going to pick up my bike on my next day off (5 days later) regardless if they were finished with the work. When I came in to pick up the bike, they had finished some of the work, but the fit/finish of everything was slightly off. For one, there were loose cables hanging off the front speedo/odo. The gauges themselves were not mounted straight. The clutch cable was too tight causing the clutch to disengage when turning the handlebars to the right. The bike was still absolutely filthy from being stored outside constantly. And despite my constant communication with Al about what I wanted done, he did not complete two items on my checklist (which I had texted him on 3 separate occasions). Suffice it to say, I was less than pleased with the timeliness and the craftsmanship of the work. I let Al know that I was not happy, and to his credit, he did offer his apologies (which seemed sincere) and gave me a discount on the bill. Because Al seems like a sincere guy, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here and believe that my job took as long as it did because of a series of unfortunate mishaps and not complete negligence. However, I will not be returning for any further work and would recommend that you also stay away for anything more involved than an in/out oil change. read more

I've given this business a lot of chances and they have failed to deliver one too many times. I've gone to Al's for a few years because I believe in supporting locally owned businesses in Echo Park. I will NEVER be going here again and I will NEVER recommend that anyone else does unless they want to be frustrated, lied to, and taken advantage of. DO NOT GO HERE. "AL" and whoever that lady is who covers the front desk know absolutely nothing about the business, lie to customers about what services they need, and about what has actually been performed during service on their motorcycle. They argue with their shop manager in front of customers (which explains a LOT). The staff mechanic is "AL's" son who was handed a wrench and hates his job. As somebody already stated on yelp, this individual has a crap attitude and below basic knowledge about fixing bikes. I finally had to pay another shop to UNDO the things they did, after months-long back & forth with Al's (where I was left without a working motorcycle for months which is my main mode of transportation) which they wanted to not only charge me for, but keep misdiagnosing into an endless cycle of fees and unnecessary services to cover up what they broke. My CBR500 broke down on the freeway. One cylinder just stopped working, but I was able to take it back to my apartment. I called Al's Cycle Shop, and he sent a pickup truck to pick up the bike. The transporter was very quick and professional, cost was $30 to get to the shop. Repair: Fuel injector stopped working, so I got that done. The shop also recommended I do valve inspection and adjustment, which I knew I was past due by about 2000 miles. Overall, the cost for the repair and valve adjustment was very fair. They also recommended some other optional work which I knew I needed down the line. Overall: I was very satisfied with the 1 week time from bike drop off to pick up. The price was fair and a lot better than the Honda dealers. The staff was very helpful. I haven't tried any other shops around LA, but this shop seems like the go to place for any job. reading all the comments about how this place is the best cycle shop in LA area, yeah i really don't know about that. i came from a town in the midwest where you can find motorcycle barns almost everywhere and they're all run (or owned) by old timers that were solid riders back in their 'heyday' and usually the crews are solid and all about honesty as well as rider satisfaction. from the outside, Al's Cycle shop does have that "old school-iconic-mom and pop no bs attitude nothing but honesty" look to it but on the inside, it's just Pep Boys for motorcycles. the front desk guy is not consistent with prices and had little knowledge on old bikes and parts. i was quoted two different prices from him on a same part but on two different days. it kinda gave me a bad vibe so i politely said i was gonna try to see what my other options were and just left. he's ok with it though and gave me no attitude. read more

I went into AL's a few months ago looking for my first bike. The vibes were very causal and I never once felt that I was being pushed into a sale. There was a beautiful 2005 Vulcan 500 cruiser that I had my eyes set on. Al and his team gave me all the info i needed & nothing I didn't Unfortunately the Vulcan was sold.... and I had instead purchased a moped (as my first "bike") however I loved the energy at Al's soo much that I came to have my moped serviced! ***Quick Repair Update*** 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 300 Baby is back home. Last time I posted here about the shift rod dropping off on the highway in Carson about two weeks ago. I took it over Al's Cycle Shop to get the part ordered and put on. I have to say that my experience was phenomenal. Al gave the bike a good once over and called me to keep me updated me on the progress of the repairs. He told me I needed a rear tire (I knew this, but you know how it is when you only NEED one thing done) to which I agreed. I am an extremely loyal customer and I will be telling everyone I know about the impeccable and rip-roaringly badass Al's Cycle Shop in Echo park off Glendale. So two days ago my bike broke down in the hell that is Pasadena. Still stoking a mastery of motorcycling, I had no idea what was wrong. No lights. No sound. A 550lbs paperweight. I'm broke and I barely have the scratch for insurance, let alone triple A or a friend to pick me up. I phoned up Al's with a grim hope. It was 730pm. They closed an hour earlier. Al had given me his cell phone after tuning up my bike days before at the shop. He told me to call anytime. Al picked up the phone and had a truck ride me out of the old town hell and into glorious Graceland before my demonic 1000cc engine dropped 5 degrees. My bike was fixed and screaming down the highway by the time the sun was exploding back into the sky. And all of this, believe it or not, was done free of charge brothers and sisters!!! I had a fuse go out. They replaced it with a better one and taught me about carrying a reserve in case it ever happens again. I purchased my '81 Kawasaki KZ1 privately from Al after hearing nothing but shining and exemplary word of mouth about the shop. I live in Hollywood and love an excuse to ride out to Echo park. Every single employeeI have encountered at Al's is kind, decent, and deserving of respect. They do excellent work. And they have customer service on a personal, professional, and humanly perfect level. And who could leave out Bruno, the Behemoth shop dog who lumbers sweetly among the steely hogs, casting his protective magic over their gleaming hulls and mopping up the cement floor with his sandpaper pit bull tongue! Fast service and knowledgeable people. Excellent deal in the Echo Park/DTLA areas TIP: THESE GUYS DO TOWING CHEAP AND QUICK! PROFESSIONAL TOO!!! I bought a used bike and took my time to learn to ride it. Decided to get new tires, great deal on tires at Al's. The whole crew is very passionate about bikes. I've watch them all work. Its not just a job, they enjoy working and fixing bikes. While I waited for my new tires I saw their main mechanic oversee all the work the other mechanics do. He inspects all the bikes that comes in. Mike and the other mechanic has done numerous extra work on my old used bike just to make sure the bike is safe! I only paid for new tires. Actually, they do this for other customers bikes too! They care about our safety. Believe it or not, they don't do it so they can charge either. I've seen them help bikers with free inspection and repair, I'm betting it was small minor repair, but still to the person who brought in the bike they would've not known. They wont rip you off here :) So my used bike did need a couple of extra repairs, but my bike is good to use. They are honest and fair. If you buy a used bike bring it here for an inspection. Plenty of mechanics staffed, even on weekends, so repairs are fast. Like I stated earlier its not work, these guys like what they do. read more

I was recommended this shop by a coworker (longtime rider and motorcycle courrier) after from sour luck on three other shops/mechanics closer to my area. Although it's a fair drive from South Bay to Silverlake, we got my bike Max towed to the shop and I cannot be more grateful for the quality of work and level of service I've received each time I've been back since. For context: Max is an '85 Yamaha Maxim XJ-700. Because she is as old as I am, several shops have told me they refuse to work on her outright. A shop in Gardena put the wrong size rear tire on her, which caused clutch issues, etc. Another mechanic did not count on her not having generic/after market parts for her, since she was only in production two years during a weird sort of phase in CC taxes on imports. When I first brought Max in for work, she was not running, and being a relatively new rider (with only a few years under my leathers) it was not easy for me to describe her problems. Thankfully, they made it easy to understand what the possibilities and risks were, staying within my budget and requests, as well as keeping close communication on the one hiccup they did encounter during the repairs. I never imagined how happy I would be when I did get Max back, her issues resolved, her carbs cleaned, and running eight-hundred times better than when I bought her. I had the pleasure of meeting my mechanic, Rojas, discussed the work, and was pleased enough to leave a tip, I was so blown away. Mike was great, informative and diligent, and Al himself is also welcoming and extremely flexible. If you love your wheels, bring her here and she will get the love she needs. Period. read more

I've brought my ninja here a couple times- very thankful to have found these guys :) super friendly and down to business. The first time I came for new tires, and was able to wait with their incredibly sweet shop pup while they took care of me same day. They noticed my brake line was leaking as they finished, and swapped it out for me free of charge. My bike has some mods, and the second time I came they gave my bike a good once over, fixing some issues with the altered electrical and even made some custom muffler brackets to fit my cropped frame. During its week long stay at the shop, I received regular updates and never felt in the dark about the progress of the job. I've been riding around carefree and without issue since my last visit, and will definitely be coming back for any future work I need done. read more

This shop is a honest and fairest motorcycle shop I've been to so far. Other shops would charge just to take a look but Al's Shop is not all about the money their more about the customers. After taking a look at my motorcycle he told me what's wrong and what needs to be replaced and if it didn't need to be replaced right away he told me to wait until I had enough money but also gave me a cheaper route to purchase safe used parts. This is my main shop from now on for any motorcycle or scooter. I had couple price quotes but Al's Shop was the fairest price. Thanks Al for looking out for the customers. read more

I wish there was something more effective to rid this shop from the earth. Terrible service, con artist style business, and seemingly managerial exploitation of quality staff on hand. The second star is only for the few techs who are solid people. but the business for the most part is run as if in a post apocalyptic Los Angeles where you need to bribe and beg for a proper service on your bike and for it to be done right. I've been here 3 times only because of problems which originated from the first time. Each time I left a little less satisfied and with a worse bike than before. They sold my bike after I took it there to be serviced. Despite many promises, they finally gave me less than half of what they said they would pay me for it. I'm going to be really mad if someone out there bought MY BIKE for really cheap and then left them a good review for it. But then again, that's doubtful. 10 of the 11 reviews right now are one or two stars, and I seriously doubt the veracity of positive reviews: If you're here from other review sites, and wonder why Al's Cycle Shop has a better reputation there, please take a moment to note that positive reviews on all other sites were mostly placed by 'guest' users within the month of November 2010, posting multiple positive reviews on the same day. Yelp is harder to fake out than that: 43 reviews for this place have been filtered by Yelp to, per Yelp's FAQ, 'help protect against fake reviews'. Of course, Al's has placed an Announcement 'If you are checking out our reviews for the 1st time please read the reviews that are filtered. These are our true customers.' Wow... ballsy! I've never seen another business on Yelp do that! But, then again, I've never dealt with another business like this. Want more? Note that every single review under 'Cycle Shop' is one star. I wanted to like these guys. I really did. I wanted to take my motorcycle to a local shop since I moved east, but whatever's going on at Al's, it's not motorcycle maintenance and it's certainly not zen. Mike, the "good cop" mechanic, will tell you whatever you want to hear, while Al plays the "bad cop" after they've screwed up your bike, and swears "you never said" for them to do the work WRITTEN ON THE WORK ORDER! "It may say that, but that wasn't our understanding." -- A direct quote. My bike sat out in the rain after they failed to reassemble it with ALL the parts... oops. Only after a disputed credit card charge pulled their payment, did they come around and call me 8 weeks later, saying "Hey, what's up?... Yeah, I know, we got kinda busy with other bikes..." My original mechanic--who later had to realign my cams and redo my timing-- asked me where the circus was?.. He pointed out only clowns use case glue to button up a bike; it's the lazy-ass way for mechanics without any real skills. Al's does NOT do it right. Do your bike and yourself right and avoid these folks. "Expertise, "customer service" and "honesty" isn't in their wheelhouse. Hell, it's not in their vocabulary. read more

You ever watch the jail show "Lock Up" on cable TV? Man these guys fit right in. For those you who don't know; Its a prison-tv reality show. So I see Al posting bikes on Craigslist and went down there since my buddy is in the market for a bike. I always see tons of bikes from the exterior of his shop every time I pass by. Just to give some background my buddy and I are inshape & clean cut.....completely opposite of the folks that work there (which is fine, I have run with both good and bad crowds and feel comfortable with both). So we ask to see if he has any used bikes for sale, pointing to the long line of bikes on display on the sidewalk. He flat out says no and that all the bikes are waiting for their owners to show up to pay for their repairs.......ALL OF THEM!!!?? Really hmmmmm I guess if you look like a thug, have tons of wrist, neck and arm tattoos and are on parole he will give you the time of day. Or maybe its because half the bikes don't have license plates and look like Frankenstein-bikes (which are motorcycles made from chopped up bikes). Not to spread any rumors but it looks shady as hell and would not be suprised. BTW there was also a group of guys working on truck and could not figure out what they were doing in front of his shop. He clearly knew them, but if this is the level of professionalism his place-of-business portrays, I would rather take my chances learning how to repair my motor bike on Youtube. They looked like something out of clown show and couldn't figure out which way to tighten a bolt. I do give him 1-star for letting my buddy to use the bathroom, I am all for biker purists who feel so insecure they need to portray the "Sons of Anarchy" lifestyle but this place is a piece-of-work. read more

I took my bike here a while back in 2009. I had 1981 Honda Nighthawk 400 They lied about the time frame to fix my clutch. Lied about not being able to find parts. Lied about calling me back. Broke parts on my bike. Stole parts on my bike. I had to go to the shop every single day to make sure they were doing the work. After 2 weeks they finally fixed my clutch. As i looked at the bike i realized they broke a part off they motor and used a wire to ghetto rig it back up. It was an old bike so I just said fine and wanted to leave. When i got home i realized that my Left passenger foot rest was missing. I went back to the shop and told them they had taken it off and I demanded a new foot rest. They accused me of lying, that it never had it, but I refused to take no for an answer, and they finally found another one that didn't even match up. Again it was an old bike so i was said fine. I have never gone back to that place. Even if my bike breaks down in front of their shop i wouldn't trust them to do anything right. I'm surprised they are still in business. THESE GUYS LIE.
