It was a regular day in Chicopee. I was just driving around when saw the shiny metal walls of this diner glistening in the sun. Something about the wonderful luster made my heart race... Can it be? A real, classic, diner? Nestled in the welcoming bosom of Chicopee Massachusetts, there it was... I had to stop. I just had to. My fiancé and her sister stumbled after me as I ran to the doors. I threw them open and the world stared moving in slow motion, as if in a dream. Just like I imagined. Five booths and one long counter, broken jukebox in the corner. Grill cook was even wearing the classic little white hat. I found it. My dream.as we sat down I inhaled the fried air filling the diner, breathing alone was clogging my arteries and that's how I knew that they don't cut corners and make food my way. I don't remember much of what happened afterwards. My brain must have shut down with the overload of awesome. Good, solid diner breakfast place on the cheap.

Gus is brilliant. I'm not sure how he is able to hold all the orders in his head but he does. My partner and I were betting that he'd mess up one of our orders but he didn't even come close. The food is fast, cheap, delicious. The Jersey diner feel is super comforting [yes, even to this New Yorker]. We got blueberry pancakes, regular French Toast, Texas French Toast, corned beef hash, over medium eggs, scrambled eggs, juices, and topped everything off with a grilled and buttered cider donut. It was good enough to warrant a 30+% tip from my partner who is still talking about it.....8 hours later. We will be back soon. Al's may have stolen our hearts from Memo's in West Springfield....but don't tell either of them. read more

I love this place from the first time a visited it. They have traditional "greasy spoon" type eats, delicious eggs Benedict (don't forget to get a side of corned beef hash) great steak and eggs, they make their own ham and turkey, needless to say delicious, I also get their grinder burger or their turkey club. Finish up with a grilled donut with butter and you've made your day! read more

Definitely a fan of this place. Every time I've been in, the food has been quick, cheap and good. Know what you're going to, people. It's a diner. That said, they do it right. Ham sliced to order (or was, last time I had it) and otherwise your standard diner fare. The thing that sets them apart is the meat pie, which you don't find in a lot of places around here! Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon - when they only serve breakfast. Pancakes are huge, light and fluffy. Omelets were delicious and eggs over easy were perfectly cooked. Can't speak to the rest of the menu, but everything we had was good, home style food. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for an old fashion style diner! read more

a gritty authentic diner--good price, excellent food

Well, I am forgiving for aspects such as the age of decor, workers enduring high volume, and so on. However, place, in general, was dingy. On one occasion, I had ham and eggs, toast, and hash browns. The cook publically attempted to berate me for not saying home fries. I did not need it. The plate arrived, I noted a small plate is used to make it appear as though I had lots of food. The eggs seemed to be medium sized. Hash browns or what ever, were about four heaping tablespoons of material, and they did taste good. Ham, really not much, kind of on the stingy side. Coffee was good. Price was O.K. but over charging for the volume of food I had eaten. Tried the place another day. Orderdd a cheese burger and rings. Rings were thin, greasy, with a pool of aged looking grease at the bottom of the dish. I had eaten just one of eight, and had to return them once seeing the grease. Waitress gave me grief for eating a ring then returning them. OK. Person with me had a chicken plate, baked that day. Had 3 tablespoons of peas, a smallish scoop of potatoes. Seems the wise mouth cook thinks extreme portion control brings them back. Well, he will never see us again, thats for sure. Lastly this is located in a dingy grey aspect of property with high traffic on the street a few feet away. Better bet is Bernies in Chicopee, great food, nice interior and so on, also, Petros on Front street Chicopee. Huge portions and everything is under ten dollars. Place has improved a lot in the past year. Prior to my last visit, I ordered rings, and got six thin half burnt rings cooked in very old grease. Ate two, could not stomach it, and went to return them only to get a very rude response from the waitress. The regular cook was not there. Other times, I would order a dish with vegetables and mashed, only to receive what amounted to two tablespoons of product. Cole slaw was also gross with way to much mayo. Well, the good news now: You order a order of rings and you get freshly cooked in new oil, and lots of them. Vegetable's are now a decent amount. Mashed is now an adult portion. Cole slaw is now a vinegar based thing and I would rate it as one of the best I have ever had. My favorite is the half fried chicken with spaghetti. Cooked tender and moist, and nice portion of spaghetti. I always tip well now that they are the "new" Al's. Burgers are still great with all fresh toppings. My only real complaint is breakfasts skimpy on the hash browns, and they use medium sized eggs and a very small plate to provide the illusion you are getting more. Hats off to the new Al's, and I truly hope that dry spell did not ruin the business, and this is why I am submitting this review. read more

The quality of food will vary. It is not consistent. One day your half fried chicken leaks blood, the next day it is over done, and the next week it is perfectly cooked. Rings can be a greasy black over done mess with globs of grease leaving one to wonder if the cook or waitress had a head injury not to notice while on another day cooked to perfection, but of course a rather small portion. I have lived in this area for years, thus I do think I am qualified to judge with evidence based opinion. When the food is "on" it is tasty but when off, it is really deplorable. I am not happy with them using small plates to increase the false appearance of having a reasonable portion. They have also started using smaller eggs. The home fries can be measured with 3 tablespoons, and ditto for vegetables with two tablespoons. The general interior of this place seems grungy although honestly and in fairness is do too age. No bugs I am happy to report. I think better choices in the area do exist. Myself, a place on Westover road called Bernie's has three times the portions that Al's has for the same price, and it is clean as a whistle. I will say Al's has the best ham I have ever tasted locally. I will certainly give them that. However, unless your a light eater, and like the grunge look, and do not mind on and off days regarding food quality, this place is best avoided if you have better alternatives available.
