This used to be the ultimate place to go for pastries and fine cakes. I had not stopped in for many years. Went in yesterday and purchased an eclair and a cream puff. The filling was decent but not amazing. The puff pastry was tough and salty. The chocolate ganache on the eclair was a bit grainy instead of velvety smooth. I stopped by to pick up a pecan pie and an apple pie, and both ended up being undercooked and basically not edible. It was such a letdown, especially since I was excited to bring them home for dessert. What made it worse is that the woman who helped me didn't mention anything about the pies needing additional baking or prep. I assumed they were ready to eat--because, well, they're pies from a bakery. Instead, I ended up wasting over $40 on items I couldn't even serve. First time here. The location is very humble and at first I thought it was closed....However inside they have nice displays of pastries and they have a very cool and nice variety. The service was fast but there also wasn't any other customers in the store. The store was a bit messy and had the windows almost fully covered? I would rate a 4 due to small size. Bf was an enthusiastic 5. My large cheese croissant also 4 in my opinion. Bf said another 5. Later on we shared a small slice of carrot cake. Probably my favorite carrot cake that I ever had. Mildly sweet, delicate cake with an added subtly flavored jam along with the icing in the middle. These are the worst tasting, dried out, stale cupcakes I have ever tasted. The frosting is some fake whipped cream goo with no actual taste, just a greasy residue coating your mouth. I can't stress enough how stale / dried out the actual cake part was, as if these were baked days ago and left to sit. If I could give ZERO stars I would. The biggest sin is that I asked the woman at the counter if everything was baked fresh. She answered yes. I'll stick with a solid bakery like Rossmoor Bakeries, which always has fresh items. I can remember buying a cake with cream filling and strawberries here years ago, that was delicious and memorable. It became my go-to bakery for quality birthday cakes for many years. Not anymore. I hadn't been there for years until recently when I stopped in to try a sampling of their pastries as a treat during the Covid pandemic. I didn't realize the ownership had changed. Unfortunately, I mentioned it to some ladies I know, and they asked me to drop by. Alsace Lorraine is on Atlantic in the Bixby Knolls area of LBC and has been in business 55 years. In addition to cookies, AL has tarts, cakes and macaron. I bought a dozen chocolate chews ($9.99), a couple of Mexican wedding cookies, and 3 macaron ($1.50/each: Coconut; Pistachio; Sea Salt Caramel). First of all, the ladies said the chocolate chews were sweeter compared to Torrance Bakery. In addition, they were not as dense. Verdict - Good, but not as good as TB: 3 Stars. I ate the latter items, and unfortunately the Mexican wedding cookies were dry: 2 Stars. Lastly, only the coconut macaron was really good. The other two were OK, but better than other places not named Bouchon or Bottega Louie: 3 Stars. Regarding the service, it was alright. The person who helped me was nice. However, she also tried to put everything in one box: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the ambiance is very nice. The bakery is located in an old neighborhood, and it has a nice feel to it: 4 Stars. Ice box cookies a solid cookie similar to shortbread full of chopped nuts perfect with a cup of plain coffee or tea. Apricot shortbread buttery thick and rich filled with apricot one of my favorites a two bite dose of deliciousness. Mini Chocolate buttercream cake layered with wafers filled with chocolate buttercream rich and delicious it's soo good that buttercream is crack. Mini Cheesecake with lemon topping thick and dense filling topped with lemon curd so tart and tasty it compliments the rich cheesecake. Mini coconut buttercream cake with lemon filling it was hand down the most Decadent delicious cake I've had this year the buttercream was sooo good I would love to buy a container to frost my homemade cakes this is addicting. Alsace is old school and the quality is the same as the first time I visited. I have tried a variety of cakes and cookies and pastries over the years and 90 % of the time it was a hit my only issue today was the pastries they just aren't my thing I took off one star for those. I'm aware Taste is subjective but I'm baffled at some of the bad reviews for Alsace Lorraine this bakery has been in Bixby knolls for many years that alone should vouch for the quality of what they offer. I always but extra sweets and I store them in the freezer wrapped in plastic to keep them moist. I put them in fridge overnight if I want to eat one. Alsace is the bomb.com in my opinion. read more
