We have been here multiple times, on the weekend and weekdays. Sometimes parking can be a little bit difficult but we usually get lucky and find one pretty close to the shop. Our favorite is the chocolate concha. It is crisp, fresh, and has the slightest sourdough flavor. I tried the dona one time and while it was great. It was just too much for me. Literally, we had to bring it home. I would suggest splitting this because of its size and it has a lot of almond and jam so it's hefty. I also tried their jamon which was sooooo good. I would get this again. For drinks we have tried their Atole, Dulce de Leche and Horchata with Cold Brew. My new favorite is the Horchata. It is so well complimented by the cold brew and it's so smooth and not too sweet. My husband also liked the taste he tried but he went with my now second favorite the Dulce de Leche. What I love about this place is that everything is balanced. Its not too much of anything just perfect. The concha isn't too sweet. It's balanced by the sourdough which is complex. 10/10. My wife was talking this place up and I was already coming into breakfast with high expectations and they were exceeded. Very small and quaint shop with a very friendly staff. We went early to make sure they weren't sold out of anything we wanted. We got a good variety and ended up eating the entire box outside before leaving. Top pics would be Doña, Nixtamal Queen, Alfajor de Neuz, and the Brie and Ham Sandwich. My wife got the matcha which was fantastic and I got the Atole latte which was perfectly creamy and not overly sweet. There is spicy Jalapeno bread and there is this, which is Sourdough, Jalapeno and salt done in the perfect combination. I got my sourdough fix here! I stumbled upon this place by searching up bakeries in Long Beach. I got their sourdough bread (masa madre) and you can tell it was made with love and care. Now that I have been back here three times I am so excited to leave a review. My favorite things are the bollio and concha. The way their bread is so soft drives me crazy. I have never had a bollio or concha as soft and supple as they can make it. This place has inspired me to learn how to make a sourdough starter from how good it is. The only downsides: a long line to get in at times, street parking can get tricky based on the time of day, a little pricey. Each bread is about $4 or more but it's worth the price if you can afford it. None of these make me feel like it's less of a five star place. The place is really small. You probably will never be able to eat inside but tbh this place is perfect as a Togo option as well. I have also tried an entire sourdough loaf from them and it was so good and keeps soft if you store it in an airtight place. Don't get it though if you don't eat bread every day cuz it can be a lot in quantity. My advice. Come in and try the chocolate concha and whatever drink you want. We were doing a bread crawl. The first choice was this place. My friends arrived early. Since there was already a line, they helped me order. I asked for the nixtamal queen and a horchata matcha. My friends got a good amount of breads. I was able to try some of it as well. The nixtamal queen was pretty much a Kouign amann. I like Kouign amann, but I didn't like this one at all. I didn't have much to say until my friends told me that this bakery was a finalist for the James Beard awards. I was in shock because the bread I got was so dry and dense. I took a few bites and my mouth got tired lol I was not the only one in the group who had the issue. It was also overly sweet. I tried the other breads that my friends got. It was not fluffy or anything. Not much flavor as well. So I was pretty much in shock. I dunno if the quality went down because they had to mass produce...while there, I noticed there was always a line. So they were nonstop busy. The matcha horchata was not bad. It could be better. When I walked up, the line of folks waiting outside were the greatest predictor of what I'd find when I got in the door. No kidding, I immediately realized that this bakeshop is fantastic! Fortunately, I made my order on line prior to arriving and my goodies were ready. The aroma inside is mouthwatering. The friendly ambiance beckons customers to enter, order a drink and a pastry and relax. The organic bread selection was right up my alley. Everything looked absolutely. amazing! Folks working behind the counter were super friendly. I ordered a hueso quebrado ( just love the description) a seeded loaf, field loaf, 1 chocolate concha, a concha de cacao and a couple of whole grain spelt cookies. I had been to Gusto years ago, and it seems like in that time they have undergone some beautification and expansion. Kudos to them on the growth! The place is very aesthetically pleasing. About four tables inside and the rest of the seating is outdoors. They have a variety of fresh baked breads and handcrafted drinks. They also have some other trinkets for sale as well. The staff are friendly. Four stars because special offerings run out fast and parking isn't great (street only so first come, first serve). I had been wanting to visit this bakery for such a long time! Finally made it, and very much looking forward to going back. I went on a weekday morning, and luckily found street parking right across the street. There was a short line outside, but the wait wasn't too long. Everything was absolutely delicious! I tried the following: - Jamon Roll - Super flavorful savory roll. Flaky pastry filled with French ham, hatch-chile cheese and our pina mustard and topped with poppy seeds. - Spelt Cookie - Golden crispy and chewy whole grain cookie with Ecuadorian dark chocolate wafers and sprinkled with flake salt. - California Loaf - Our most popular loaf! Thick crust and soft open crumb with a balanced flavor that pairs with a wide variety of foods. Absolutely loved this! This bakery is special. Very, very special. The way this place incorporates the corn...it's like...once you have a treat here, you can't have the treat any other way. Take the kouign amann pastry, so flaky, so moist, and then you're hit with a blast of corn flavor. The alfajor cookies OMGGGGG. Again, textbook baking but with addition of corn! You need to try one of everything, seriously. Including the items in the refrigerated section. And don't forget to check out the items for sale all around the store! The employees are always chill, considering people tend to have questions or are unsure what to choose. We sat at one of the several shaded tables they have outside. I called and talked to Patty. She instantly refunded MY dough and was a pleasure to work with. I bought an assortment of goodies to take home. The bolillo's with go just fine with the Caldo de Res I'm making for dinner. The store is comfortable, has little tables to sit and enjoy a delicious pastry n coffee. We finally tried this bakery after walking by it several times. We were initially turned off by the long line and the mostly empty display case in the afternoon hours. We decided to come early to get the best picks. The bakery is small and limits the amount of people inside, which is great. Youll see a line, but it moves fast. We tried the Dona, which is definitely a very high priced concha at $9.50. It was a good concha with strawberry jam and almond cream. But, it was definitely not worth the price. We also tried the Concha De Cacoa which tasted more like bread than a pastry. Overall, the pastries were a 3/5. I actually went across the street after a workout to grab some coffee and my friend who's been wanting to come to Gusto pointed out that there was no line! It was a Friday around noon. First off, before walking in, I was loving the facade of the building. Hola when you walk in, adios when you walk out, and a virgencita by the front door. Food and order counter were pretty and the person taking our order was knowledgeable and gave us some recommendations and answered our questions. Cozy interior vibe with a vinyl record player playing music in the background. As I was about to walk out, the cashier actually remembered my name and said goodbye - honestly it was quite a pleasant surprise. [Ordering]: No line when I came here at 8:30 AM on Sunday. The shop recommends visitors to come early so that they can get exactly what they want or place a same-day order online for pickup. [Menu]: I like their single-page & double-sided menu with pictures of actual breads + a star symbol = signature item. The #1 signature item is Nixtamal Queen then follow by Concha de Cacao and Dona. For guest favorite, Pastelito de Guava and Spelt Cookie are popular alternative options. Additional simple syrup is available at the counter. *** Concha de Cacao (lightly sweet and soft bun with a crunchy chocolate top; a classic Mexican pan dulce made with whole ingredients + sourdough - $5): It tasted a little bit different than the traditional concha I had at other Mexican bakery shops, but concha here tasted less sweet and had really flaky texture. It was great! Dona (A twice-baked concha layered with our seasonal fruit jam, house made almond cream and sliced almonds. Rich, nutty, decadent - $9.50): Sliced almond + sweet molasses + sourdough aftertaste = killer combination. Nixtamal Queen (A sweet, sticky, chewy pastry with layers of our sourdough and house made corn masa - $7.50): This is the one to get and think of it as kouign-amann layered with nixtamalized corn. It had this nice chewy and flaky texture combination with a hint of molasses - I love it! If you park on Temple or Molina, you should be able to find parking. The line has about 6 people in front of me and the line went pretty quickly. I probably waited less than 10 minutes. The staff was friendly and helped explain all the bakery items to me. All prices were very reasonable for a high end bakery. They even had day old bread that you could get at a discount. A large seeded loaf was $7 and it is normally $11. I bought the ones that were recommended like the chocolate concha, the nixtamal queen , the spelt cookie and Dona. I highly recommend the cookie, Dona and nixtamal queen. I wasn't expecting a spelt cookie to be so tasty. Chewy with nice chocolate chunks. The nixtamal queen was like the corn based version of the kouign-amann. If you have not had that pastry before it is a treat! Flaky layers of buttery pastry with the right amount of sweetness. The Dona was also very good. Crunch sweet outside with a nice almond marzipan and jam topping. There is a small seating area if you wanted to gobble down your treats immediately. The red tea latte was perfectly and lightly sweetened, tasting of cinnamon, and wonderful with oat milk. It reminded me of a similar offering from a once renowned Orobae (RIP). I actually would love to know if/where I can buy the tea leaves! My bf and I loved the quebrado (pull-apart crusty sourdough buns) with the $2 whipped butter. The butter was WORTH IT--creamy/milky, seasoned to perfection (garlic and salt at least)--and my bf said it was the best butter he had eaten in quite some time. I get the line, which was only a few parties long at about 1pm on a sunny Saturday. They only allow 2 parties in the indoor line area because it is tight. I was experiencing sourdough withdrawal since my last trip to San Francisco, and my search drew me to Gusto Bread. The loaves here are delicious and their approach to the levain is quite wonderful. The loaf and the south dough has an excellent tang... they have a good starter here which is mixed in with some of their fantastic pastries. Bought a sourdough Loaf (Califorina Loaf) sliced. It smells amazing. I know it is great as we get sandwiches at Coffee Parlor that uses their breads! For pastries, we ordered Dona and Pastelito Guava. Dona is filled with almond filling and strawberry jam. Amazing pastries! We took our coffee and pastries to go. There is a nice area in the front outside for dining in and several tables inside. Parking is always a bit challenging but we were able to find a spot in the neighborhood. read more

I will say that all of their awards for their pastries are absolutely deserved. I got the Molé Mushroom Empanada and the Ham & Cheese Croissant.  Molé Mushroom Empanada - The pastry was flaky, and the mushroom molé was sooo flavorful and tender. It was a little sweet and very savory, slightly spicy, and the mushrooms were very tender. Ham & Cheese Croissant - I loved the poppy seeds on top of this croissant. It's the perfect addition to the flaky, cheesy, buttery pastry. Stellar! The line here is often very long, even on what would be considered off hours, but it is definitely worth it. Parking is not as bad as it seems, with lots of free parking in nearby neighborhoods. read more

Favorite item was the Spelt Cookie. I loved that it was a large cookie with dark chocolate chunks and an amazing texture. Probably one of the best cookies I've ever had, if not the best. Choco Pan and and Jamon Roll were good. They are similarly shaped and made with yummy fillings, but I wish they were generously filled. They're like 75% bread and 25% of their respective filling. Concha de Cacao was decent. The chocolate topping was delicately sweet and subtly flavored, and the bread itself was like a light and airy sourdough, which sounds interesting for a concha, but it works. Surprisingly, the alfajores were just ok. I was really looking forward to trying them but was disappointed at how crumbly and flavorless these were. Maybe they didn't hold up well in the warmer weather? They got very messy and broke apart easily, which made them difficult to eat with your hands. The Dona was a dense, almond-forward pastry with a slight fruity flavor from the jam. This would definitely go well with a tea. Although it was decent pastry, I wouldn't get it again, especially at nearly $10 a piece. Mushroom Mole Empanada had a savory-sweet filling enveloped in a soft, flaky, buttery triangle. Mushrooms were nicely cooked and didn't make the pastry soggy, but I don't think I'll get this one again, either. I tried a bite of a friend's Nixtamal Queen and Pastelito de Guava, and both were tasty. I'd likely get these for myself next time. Service is always great - they're so chill and helpful, just as sweet as the baked goods right behind them. The line to the bakery is usually long, and they tend to run out of stuff, so be prepared to come early. They have limited indoor and outdoor seating. It gets quite busy, so the area can feel cramped, but it comes and goes. Street parking is available nearby. read more
