I took my 7 month old kitten here for some shots, ended up costing over $300 for just a few vaccinations. I also asked them to check if he had cryptorchidism and they told me he did not, come to find out he actually does have cryptorchidism. Overall I don't recommend this place. read more

Alta Mesa Animal Hospital Review I had been taking my cats to Alta Mesa since 2005. It was the hospital I trusted for any health concerns. The team from hospital manager to doctors to nurses to cannel staff to front desk was outstanding. Everybody always seemed to know my animals well. I was confident staff was knowledgeable, competent, caring, kind, and compassionate. I have seen many members of the team come and go over the years, but as sad I was to see them leave, I rested assured I was receiving the same great care for my animals regardless. Recently my feelings about Alta Mesa were just not the same. It seemed that great hospital I knew had lost its marbles. Phone follow ups for my cat's serious illness were neglected, requested refills of important hospice care medication were forgotten. Front desk staff tells me a refill that previously costed me less money was because the hospital wasn't sure if that medication had already expired! Again, hospice care medication my animal depended on, and she tells me possibly expired. Until today, more than three weeks later, no calls to check if my beloved kitty is still alive. Last contact I had with Alta Mesa was to say I no longer needed the meds refills for the kitty. The answer I got was "oh, all right then". No follow up questions, concern, curiosity about the animal, zero questions about his wellbeing. By the time I realized Alta Mesa animal Hospital was no longer the place to take my animals to, I may have become the witch for the front desk. My frustration showed through in hard times and I am not proud of it. I sincerely apologize if I came across as rude. I just wish they had cared a bit more, just a bit more compassion would have done the trick. People with very sick animals at a hospital are usually not at their best, especially when the care team drops the ball so many times. Better training is needed. My dog has major anxiety but they always handle her with so much care. Hope was someone who was new to handling Halcy but she did such an amazing job. Not to mention, she pronounced her name right! The front desk girls have to be my favorite, they're always so welcoming and good at making me feel calm and comfortable. I have a hard time trusting people to handle the one thing in my life I live for but they always do great. They recommended a liver support and my dog, in 30 days, is back to normal. My cat Dante was not well and I called everywhere to get him into a vet but they were either booked or were so expensive. Called Alta Mesa and they made time for us. Unfortunately I had to let my kitty go, they were so compassionate and caring during an extremely difficult time for me. Dr Cooper is amazing! They let me take all the time I needed to say goodbye. When I came to pick up Dante's ashes, everything came in a beautiful blue velvet bag with his urn, certificate, a little of his fur in a sealed bottle, a paw print with his name on it and a lovely card from the vet. Took my dog there for a dental cleaning which I know has it's risks because of the anesthesia. But she has been under anesthesia in the past at another vet clinic for a repair to a hernia and recovered very well. However after this dental cleaning, she was still sick and nauseated from the anesthesia for over three days and somehow also came down with a runny nose and congestion. Another $200 later for medication and another week of not getting better I was fed up. Here's the issues I have: 1) she got an upper Respiratory infection after her treatment at the clinic and yet no acknowledgement of that and no apologies. Just an additional $200 bill. After a week of her still being sick from the UTI and nauseated, they stopped calling to see how she was doing even though the last time they called I told them she wasn't much better. It took over three weeks for her to recover. Very poor follow up and it sure feels like they didn't care. 2) the customer service is poor. I know, yes there's additional protocols due to the pandemic. But at least 75% of the time, expect to be put on hold immediately when you call. Expect that occasionally it'll sound like you're being transferred yet 50% of the time somehow you get disconnected and have to call back again. While waiting on hold you have to hear their incessant message saying be nice to their staff because they're under pressure and doing their best. Well the same goes for your customers. Frankly the message sets you up to expect poor service IMO. 3) in the pre-dental visit, I told the receptionist when I checked in that I needed to return to work but allowed a full hour for the visit. I arrived early to be respectful of their time so they wouldn't be waiting on me. Instead they were almost 20 minutes late and by that time I knew there wasn't enough time so I had to leave and cancel. When they called to reschedule, they knew the situation but they made no apologies for being late and wasting my time. I gave it two stars because I did feel like the vet took the time to explain my dog's dental treatment etc. I gave this feedback directly to the clinic in one of their surveys. Again no acknowledgement and no apologies. They had a chance to address my concerns but didn't. read more

Family female cat named Misty (5 months of age) was taken for a general exam and consultation to get spayed/neutered. There is a certain amount of trust given to this facility, specifically during Covid due to their drop off policy. You just assume that the work is completed. Either the doctors there are incompetent or the exam was actually never completed. Following initial exam, an appointment was made for Misty to get spayed; however, they lost the appointment. We ended up taking Misty elsewhere, only to find out that Misty is a boy not a girl. We were advised that Misty's balls had already dropped and had male genitals. How did Alta Mesa miss that? I would not recommend taking any of your family pets there. We will not be returning. My pets are very important to me and I want the upmost care taken with my family. I need a physician who can at least tell me the sex of my cat before completing a major surgery. read more

My dog had been having stomach issues for a few days so I decided to take him to the vet. I have to say I wish we humans had it this good. They got him right in even though it was only a few hours before they closed and there were several other animals to be seen. If I was in the emergency room with a missing arm it would still take 40 mins to a hour before I saw a doctor.The staff here really took the time to ask questions like what has he been eating, and made sure to find out what the problem was in a very short amount of time. They even cleaned him up after he got sick in the examination room and recommended ways to improve his health. Overall my experience was a great one! My dog is eating his new food (vet recommended) and is looking like his old self again. They even worked with me on a payment plan since it ended up costing around $300 for everything including the new food. So the next time your pet needs a little TLC take them over to see the people at Alta. read more

I have brought my pet here about 5 times for the same issue. It was never fixed, just given meds to see if it'd help. The first 2 visits, the same tests were conducted and gave us the same answers (still had to pay for both tests to be done). And I don't think I've ever actually met the vet here, just people stepping in from other offices. The staff here is very polite and care for my pet very nicely. However, it was frustrating to have spent so much money every visit for the appointment, multiple medications that MIGHT help, and I was still left with no answers. The last visit, they suggested it could be a dental issue but were pretty set on pricing, nothing could be altered to lower costs even if I just want an x-ray to know if that's the issue. No, they have to do a cleaning, and a bunch of other things that cost more. I don't have $800 dollars to be pouring out for something that MIGHT be the issue. I'd recommend this facility due to their staff, but I'd just hope that person is able to have a simple enough issue with their pet that they can find out what it is without breaking the bank. read more

I have six cats and i've been a client of theirs for about a year and regularily purchase a special brand of cat food for one of my cats special diets. Pros: The staff is super nice and is helpful in answering questions and accomodating people and pets. The place is always clean and inviting and they show great care for you and your pets. Cons: The prices are really expensive and they try and get you to do unnecesary care for your animal. My cat had to have a cancerous tumor removed and although i was expecting it to cost a lot of money, i was not expecting to spend $800+(although i'm pretty sure we ended up spending $1100 for her care). They also insisted on having my pets teeth cleaned using the EXACT SAME PITCH on 3 different cats on 3 different occasions and despite their best efforts to force us to get their teeth cleaned we declined. All in all-i love the staffs hospitality, but hate the outragious prices and pushiness. I'll probably continue buying the special food, but i don't know if i'll bring my pets back. read more

I've been using this vet for 7 months. From my 10 month old puppies first visit up to yesterday. I will NEVER take my animal there again. I really think that they need to spend less time customizing water bottles, providing personal ID cards and setting up online pet portals and just try for some quality, affordable animal care. I brought my puppy in for a broken nail. ($286), after 10 minutes they told me that they couldn't keep him down long enough to do the procedure so they needed to put him completely under ($90). We left almost $400 later with a huge bandage on his foot on the road to healing. The next morning he took 4 steps out of his cage and his bandage came right off. When we returned to the vet when they opened they informed us that the person who does their bandages would not be in the office until the afternoon WAIT WAIT Stop right there, yes you heard me right. I said the 1 PERSON who does thier bandages...ok just wanted to make sure everyone caught that....and could we keep him there until she arrived and pick him up later. They tried to charge us for keeping him there for a couple hours and for a new bandage even though the one they put on him the previous night wasn't applied correctly ($54). I told them I wouldn't pay anymore money so they went back to try their best on a bandage since their "bandage person" wasn't there. They came back 20 minutes later and said that he was trying to bite them so they couldn't put on the bandage. So apparently mine is the first dog that doesn't like their open wounds to be touched and they have no muzzles or anything to keep his head steady while trying to work with him. Because of this they wouldn't bandage his foot. So they basically denied him care for being a dog. I also compared the bill to three other vets and they charged me twice what the procedure would cost. Every other office I spoke to said that putting him under total anesthetics for something so minor is s gross waste of money and putting him in danger for no reason. All vets I spoke with said that it's not uncommon at all for dogs to try to nip and growl when they're in pain. It's simply their nature and every office should have the tools necessary to work on them. If you can't rely on them to care for your animal no matter the circumstances how could you feel good about bringing your baby there? I will never step foot into that office again. I think my puppy and bank account will thank me. read more

I took my dog to Alta Mesa Animal Hospital after she was bitten by another dog. It was a minor bite but I wanted it treated properly. After they had us put a muzzle on her they looked at her, then handed us a 602$ dollar bill for the wound care and other things they wanted to do. We questioned the blood test 161$ and asked them just to treat the wound and they then would not treat the wound at all. They charged us for an office call 53$ and 113$ for antibiotics and sent us on our way. Well, needless to say we had to take our dog to another vet to get her treated . Their prices are too high, go there if you don't mind spending lots of money on your animal. read more

I've taken my two birds to Alta Mesa for several years now. Mostly wellness exams and blood work. The staff at Alta Mesa are so friendly and helpful. I only wish people who work in many medical offices for people could be so friendly! Dr. Patt is very knowledgable and is always very sweet to my birds. She seems to truly care about every animal she sees and has been nothing but kind to me as well. The techs have also all been friendly and helpful. It's nice to have an avian vet so close and that has done so well with my birds. I don't particularly like going to the vet because I know it's not fun for my birds, but I'm so glad I can rely on this vet when I need them. read more

When she left the other hospital we didn't know where she went and decided to give the other doctors a try. We were not overly impressed with their treatment. When we finally found Dr. Fornara we switched immediately. She saw our one little yorkie last week and will see our maltese/bischon this week. We feel she is very thorough and actually listens to us.
