Loved the ample outdoor seating spaces both along the River and out front of the main entrance. Clean, sleek, modern look and feel. Seemed to be a great atmosphere for all ages. Solid beer and while we didn't order any food, everything we saw served to patrons seated around us, looked excellent. Front waitstaff could be nicer especially when people are visiting for their first time. Service was good. Brewery stickers available at the front! The only "downside" is the beer is pricey. Cute brewery with a stellar location along the river, this place has true potential. Service was great provided by Michelle, beer was just mediocre... for being a brewery. Went here on a Saturday night with a group of 6. Had to wait about an hour but upon sitting we were greeted by Michelle; warm and super knowledgeable about the menu and beer. When ordering beer, I like that you can choose your size between 5oz, 16 oz, crowler or growler size. They also have your standard flight options which is nice. The guys in our group ordered a couple options - center line and their Oktoberfest to both were a little underwhelming and lacked a full body flavor. They weren't really impressed. Food looks good and is good! I ordered the smash burger which is essentially a patty melt. My boyfriend ordered the brisket chili which was good as well. Everyone's food at the table was good as well. We did have vegan and vegetarians in our group and to our surprise, they actually had options which is a plus. Prices for food seemed a little on the higher end but expected for being in the heart of downtown St. Charles. Overall, really cool location , service was great provided by Michelle, I just think we expected really stellar beer only to be surprised that it tasted more bland than flavorful. We came in for dinner on a Friday night, it was busy but not crowded. We had gotten on the waitlist and had responded. When we arrived, the hostess was extremely rude and said that they had removed us from the waitlist but she guessed she could fit us in. While we were waiting, she proceeded to have a verbal altercation with the other hostess next to her. Service was super slow and our waiter seemed annoyed to be there. The food was expensive for what it was and was disappointing. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos and they were almost too spicy for either of us to eat (and we both enjoy spicy food). The service here is seriously amazing. The food has come a long way and the location is great. We quite literally felt like family when we decided to pop in here one summer day. I'm writing this now because yelp prompted me to update my review and I totally forgot I've ever had a not amazing time at alter. The hostess, Danielle, was so sweet. I was super pregnant when we went and we brought our two mini doxies (patio seating) which sparked conversation. Nice patio facing the Fox River and great open space inside, simple straight lines, modern, overall nice decor. We shared two items: the beer cheese fondue and the Sweet Ginger Rock Shrimp salad. The salad was fresh and crisp, the sweet ginger dressing and pineapple tamarind created a bursting of flavors to all fresh ingredients. The cheese fondue was yummy, lots of bacon, and green onions. The pretzel were soft, buttery, just excellent even though I had only a little piece. My friend, and later on my husband devoured them. Drinks were great. Not sure which white wine my friend had or the name of my spicy cocktail with excellent jalapeños. Overall good experience, I would go back. Good food and service....However, we were surprised to receive a 3% charge on our bill for credit card usage. No sign posted on either the menu or at the host stand to forewarn us. This was my first visit to this location of Alter. I had previously been to their Downers Grove location. Came in on a Tuesday night and I was so surprised at the super slow service. They had a decent amount of staff working but I didn't see our server for long periods of time. I had a salad that was pretty decent. Their dressings on the menu didn't match what they had in stock. My boyfriend had the smash burger and it was super messy and greasy. I'm not sure that I would return to this location. I prefer their more intimate location in Downers. read more

This is one of my favorite locations to sit outside and have a beer during the warm months. They have a couple huge patios, one along the river and one facing all the other restaurants in the square. The inside is large, too, but can be quite noisy. They have some of the better craft beer in the St. Charles area. The food is good, upscale bar food. They have a watermelon salad that is very good, although it might be seasonal. Burgers are good, too. Just a nice place to hang out; we usually stop for at least a beer when in the area. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon before seeing a show at the Arcadia. There is a large patio space and the inside has tables and bar seating. The atmosphere is open and inviting. Our waitress immediately came over to or table and offered drink and menu options. I had the Bang Bang Cauliflower and our waitress suggested I add the Cuban grilled chicken. My husband had the Chili Garlic Shrimp with the Cuban grilled chicken, with a side of fries. Both were recommend by our waitress and were good selections. The portions were very quite large. Visited Alter yesterday and was pleasantly surprised! I've never been to this part of St. Charles and it's so nice! The Alter location has a lot of parking around it, from garages to street parking. And Alter has a great view of the river! We came for dinner on a Tuesday night, and I made a reservation through Tock, although it wasn't needed because there were plenty of open seats! I'm a vegetarian and found SOOOO many options here! For the appetizer we got the grilled cheese bites which was amazing! And for dinner I got the BLA sandwich, (minus the bacon) which was also super tasty! All of the food was fresh, unique, and delicious! If I enjoyed beer, this visit would have been much more enjoyable. The interior is design is very rustic and they have a nice outdoor patio. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive but the food just wasn't good. The highlight was the beer cheese fondue but even that was mediocre. It only came with three mini soft pretzels which tastes like something out of a freezer. The rock shrimp salad was big but it was basically a bunch of shredded Napa cabbage over a pile of mini shrimp. We also tried the beer cheese soup which was just...off. We have stopped in for a beer previously, but wanted to try the food. Ugh, I wanted to like it because the menu looked great. We shared the basic burger and the Cubano. Took a bite of my half of the burger and something was off. Strange taste. Lettuce? Sauce? Finally determine that it was the burger itself. Tasted like chemicals. After the couple of bites I couldn't eat anymore. The cubano was ok. Lots of bun, not much meat and didn't care for the sweet pickles instead of dill which is the typical taste profile. Fries were good, as was the coleslaw. Beer was tasty and bar service was ok. I told the bartender about the burger, he wrote 'a note to the chef'. I wasn't looking for a freebie, my husband ate his half - he found it to be edible but 'not great'. Attended a private room birthday party at the St. Charles location. (Tip - there is a convenient parking garage across the street). The main bar and restaurant area were fully packed for a Saturday night. Was promptly shown where to go and was quickly met with one of a few dedicated servers to get a drink. Ended up trying a few different beers: Alterado - This one was my favorite. A Mexican style lager NZAA - A hazy IPA. This one was ok. Not in my top favorite IPAs, but was still a good drink. I also tried my wife's Sour. I can't remember what it was called, but the only one listed on the website is Long Walks on the Peach. This one was my least favorite. To sour/bitter for my liking. There was several buffet style foods available. My favorite had to be the Chili Garlic Shrimp. Ridiculously tasty! All in all, this would be a great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat for the weekend. read more

I've been to Alter dozens of times now but I always like to change up what I order to really get the experience and I haven't been disappointed yet! Whenever I come, I usually order a flight but let the server choose the drinks because it's more fun that way. The server chose my flight and it was definitely a good set. This location just got the Sticky Situation drink in (dark beer w/ peanut butter flavor) and it's definitely a good choice. Also, I asked to make the Alter Burger spicy - so they added jalapeños and chimichurri sauce. Personally, it wasn't spicy at all but it was still really good and might be my go to custom. There is free parking garage nearby and it's about a short walk to the restaurant. I kinda got lost finding it because there is not clear visible signs to it after parking. The good: The food was delicious with generous portions. Their micro brew beer is great. The location is next to the river and allows for nice views. Sitting outside was great, especially with the warm spring weather was really nice. The bad: We'd made reservations and when we arrived were advised they didn't have a reservation. Hostess said it's not uncommon for reservation to go to their Oak Brook location vs St. Charles. She then casually walked away. I was able to find the confirmation email and had to chase her down to show the confirmation. Again, she did not seem to care. I put our name on a list and then sat at a park bench between the river and the restaurant to wait. After 45 minutes I went to see what the wait time would still be. Despite the fact I saw multiple open tables while sitting outside, she said we were 4th. I asked how long that would be. She couldn't give us a timeframe and again just turned and walked away. After an hour and 15 minutes sought out the manager. The manager was very understanding. He immediately has us seated. I would recommend trying this spot out, but make a reservation. Make sure the reservation is at the right location. Hosting staff can be dismissive. The lack of empathy and wait time brought the rating down from 5 to a 3.5. read more

The staff was cold and our waitress had no personality and was borderline rude the entire time. The place is strange, tv's with the game on and a brewery but food that doesn't match. We ordered the Fried Barrata and waited to order lunch...we are so glad we did. The Barrata was lukewarm outside and cold inside, the "rustic bread" was so thin it could pass for white sandwich bread and they gave 4 little triangles...nothing I would ever order again and completely underwhelming and way overpriced.
