Highly don't recommend this place if you want your dog to get abused or you get educated on how to handle your own dog. Brought my dog here because he had an eye infection. When I walked in the people at the front desk were super nice and understanding. Side note: He doesn't like men or going new places. I had to put a muzzle on him so he wouldn't bite anyone during the appointment. My pup also does bite work as he is a working dog. I let everyone know that he does and would need a muzzle to make the process go a little smoother. I felt terrible the whole time and I know it was comfortable for him. The doctor walks in and tells me to hold him by the collar to look at his eyes all this while my dog is flipping out, overstimulated from a man trying to walk toward him. He said that he does have an eye infection and wants to put medication in his eyes. I said I'll do it at home as I already had dogs that have special eye drops. He looked at me like I must be crazy or something. He then proceeded to say "you should get your dog trained" I'm sorry what??? Do not tell me that I should get my dog trained when you don't know anything about him and are trying to hold him and force medication in his eyes. Kept nagging about getting him trained and gave me a business card. I would like to point out I train my dog everyday and take him to a training facility where they know what I need to do to help my dog. My dog is fine but I think it's the doctor that needs to get educated on how to handle dogs cause he clearly doesn't. read more

All of the staff are so sweet with your animals. You can tell that they are truly happy and love animals. We brought in my mastiff for her UTI and I was blown away that Dr Jones wheeled out the ultrasound as part of the service to rule out any bladder stones. Our other vet would have charged us $800+ for that. I appreciate that they genuinely want your creature to get better and aren't they to squeeze you for hundreds/thousands. Finally getting around to this review about a year after coming in, but needed this to be said to hopefully save others from coming here: Dingy old office. Make you wait out front for 20+ minutes past your appointment time. Brought my dog here when she was an 8 week old puppy about a year ago and Dr Jones tried showing us how to "train" her by physically restraining her and pinning her neck down against the exam table to "show her we're the alpha" and shoved his fingers down her throat to "teach her how to take pills." Recommended doing this multiple times a day. A vet recommending physical abuse as training... lovely. She was screaming crying trying to get away from him and extremely frightened. He also had just come out of a room with his hand wrapped up and we asked what happened, he said he just got bit by a dog earlier that day - I wonder why???? We also asked if he had anywhere she could use the bathroom since she was not vaccinated yet and couldn't go outside. To which he replied that parvo isn't around anymore much in San Diego and she's fine. Puppies die of parvo all the time. Absolutely insane. He had also told us that she needed surgery or her life could be on the line and when we asked more about it he said she would actually "probably be fine waiting." Extremely nonchalantly and confused us so much. So we had no idea if our puppy was dying or not. Had to bring her to another vet the next day and spend double the cost for assessment. My dog is now reactive and is terrified of men and the vet to this day because of him. Do NOT bring your puppy here. read more

We are so grateful we found Alvarado. Our kitten had an emergency urinary issue and we didn't know what to do. We called ahead and from the moment we opened the front door, the whole staff jumped on it and took him right in for immediate care. It was pretty stressful until we got there. They kept our little guy a few nights as they cared for him and he healed. During his stay, we received daily updates and we were very impressed with the communication. We even got calls directly from Dr. Jones and Dr. Valdez. Alvarado was professional, empathetic, sympathetic and the pricing was great (we heard horror stories about how some vets stick it to you in an emergency). Warning!!!!! Do not get your pet's nails trimmed here. I've taken my dog twice and both times they did an awful job on it and very rushed. Today, 2 of her nails were all bloody and the rest of them were either barely cut or completely jagged/splintered. They're actually worse now, and I have to redo them myself. We won't be buying this service here anymore. Just a warning. Other than that, great service, smart doctors, pleasant reception staff. No other issues. I have many dogs recently made an appointment with my Great Dane. I showed up early 15 minutes as they requested since they have not seen this dog yet waited outside for about an hour and 20 minutes nobody ever came to get me I came back inside and asked them what happened they still weren't ready. I'm not sure what the point of having an appointment is if I get stuck waiting an hour to an hour and a half this is happened several occasions with my visits here. We have been going to Alvarado for years. They are experienced and less expensive than other clinics. They provide medical care for a variety of pets as well as pet food. I have even brought my tortoise here. I would recommend this veterinarian hospital to everyone. Since writing the above, I paid for an office visit, one medication and a blood test for my pup. I had a very bad experience here which is very sad because the owner Dr. Malcolm S. Jones is wonderful. He was kind and knowledgeable. He offered to give me a discounted rate for pregnancy ultrasounds for my cats and when I told the administrator at checkout, she got angry at me, as if it was my fault the doctor /owner offered me a discount but she honored it because he told her too. Shortly After this happened, I got a very rude letter in the mail from the owner's wife basically saying I am banned from the vet because I am not honoring the regular pricing.... clearly that was not the case, her husband offered me a discount. Since it seems this has happened before with many clients, and his wife gets angry at the client vs her own husband who is the one who gives discounts because he is fair and kind, the whole thing is just unprofessional. His wife (who also works there as a dr) was extremely rude and aggressive when I called her regarding the unfair letter I received. She blamed me and would not listen and we are in the process of reporting their business since everything about the way this was handled was completely unethical and we are currently working with a lawyer since what they did is against the law. Hopefully you go elsewhere for your animals or else You are dealing with a jealous wife, not a mature business owner. read more

NOT Amazing, compassionate or caring! Our dog was attacked by a rattlesnake and bitten twice. Needless to say that time was of the essence! while on our way to the nearest town and vet to save our Australian border collie, I called the clinic around 16:20, explained our predicament and asked if they had antivenom in stock etc. The girl's first response was if we had been there before, that it was 16:20 and that they close at 1700 and we would still need to do paperwork and she would need to check if we could be seen and more blah blah blah which I tuned out. She never even answered my question! So much for compassion! I guess the part of this is an emergency was missed! Needless to say again that I hung up and dialed another veterinarian. STOP STOP!!!! Please read. If you are looking for a Vet for your fur baby, then look no further ALVARADO VETERINARY HOSPITAL is the best veterinarian hospital in Fallbrook and the surrounding area. This is not because of one event but several. 1.) I left and came back. I tried another vet (two to be exact), and they were nice, but they were not AVH. Something is different about this group. I was trying to save a few bucks, and it cost more in the end care suffered. 2.) The staff and Dr. Jones and Dr. Burks are fabulous. They treat you like people, family, friends, the care and comfort they give is evident in the time they spend with you and willing to answer any question you have. You leave the visit/appointment with a thorough understanding through good or bad they reinforce that you can call anytime. 3.) The hospital has EVERYTHING you need to care for your fur baby without having to go to an outside facility to care for your pet--for example, x-ray, EKG, Echocardiogram, medication (tablets, and suspensions). 4.) Money/Cost is not their focus; they care about the health of the pet and the emotional toll a sick pet has on the owner. They keep both in mind. Thus if they suggest a proscribe treatment, you can trust it is necessary. 5.) End of Life services. It is comforting to know your pet is cared for in life as they were in death. Yes, they work with a tremendous veterinary cremation service. When I found out Buffi was ill the vet office I went to sent me to Pet emergency hospital in Escondido for x-ray's I had to pay the vet, and then the ER for x-ray and medication, then the vet again for a follow-up. I needed a refill on the medication, and I wanted suspension (liquid instead of the tablet) they did not carry the suspension, and a new prescription was required for the suspension this was a challenge because I was running out. The medication was needed to keep Buffi alive. I was unable to get there during their office hours M-F, hours were not conducive for care (no weekends). I share these details, NOT to throw another Vet under the bus but to stress that AVH is the best place for your pet. Dr. Jones has taken every consideration to provide the equipment, medication, services, and staff, etc. needed to provide pet owners with what is needed to care for their pet baby. The money I was trying to save cost me more in the end and means little when caring for my precious Buffi. I regret not staying with AVH and leaving them for something less expensive. But, thanks to Dr. Burks and Dr. Jones and the entire staff, they made my remaining time with Buffi the best and the most comfortable, and I trusted them with her remains. AVH has what is needed to care for your fur baby/pet one-stop hospital. And knowing that just about everything your pet needs is there eliminates the running to and fro for pet care and having to have the results sent to your vet just use AVH. I have learned my lesson. I will ONLY use AVH for my new puppy when she arrives: praying for a new maltese/maltipoo. I am forever grateful for their care towards Buffi, and their extreme professionalism. My experience with Dr. Jones last year was a positive one when bringing in my small female 10 year old Tibetan Spaniel in for dental cleaning 2018. This dog had very bad breath and at the initial required pre-exam Dr. Jones said she would have to have an infected tooth pulled along with cleaning. Pre-exam charge $60.00. We scheduled the procedure, brought her back for teeth cleaning and tooth extraction. Charges had been explained and agreed by us. Charges for procedure a little over $300.00 as agreed. Recently, 2019, we had the same bad breath situation with our younger male Tibetan Spaniel. I called the office and was told the charge for pre-exam was $60.00, but Dr. Jones was not available the day we requested and they explained that we could see Dr. Bach just for the pre-exam then schedule the procedure as before. My husband brought the dog to the office. However, Dr Bach stated that she would have to keep the dog there until they got a urine specimen, several hours later they called wanting to give him a sedative for that. I agreed. When I called late that day asking if we could pick him up Dr. Bach got on the phone stating that his tests were fine, and to schedule for the dental cleaning. I assumed at that point it was the urinalysis that was fine and that he was kept at the office for the sedative to wear off. My husband went to the office to pick up our dog and was presented with a bill over $600.00! Charges were run up for xrays $250.00, plus other charges we did not expect, nor were we told beforehand of charges or told of any explanations for the tests she chose to perform without our consent. My husband was upset at the charges. He said he just paid the bill to get the dog out. I called the office to question all the charges, specifically those X-ray charges of $250.00. Dr. Bach then got on the phone to tell me she would remove $150.00 off for the blood work that had not yet gone to the lab, but would not do the teeth cleaning or extraction if she took that off the bill. I knew she was manipulating me for the charges I had complained about. I told her to send the lab work out. Early the next morning, Dr. Bach called me stating that she would not do the dental procedure without doing more tests!! I called the office back asked for the test results and took them to another vet who did a pre-exam stating that the dog was healthy, and scheduled the procedure with that vet without any problems. Our dog was fine going in and fine after the procedure. A neighbor stated she had the same problem with Dr. Bach running up charges. She too took her dog to another vet to have her dog diagnosed correctly and treated correctly. I'm sad to have had this costly experience because I didn't have that with Dr. Jones. read more

Just wanted to thank Dr. Jones and all his caring staff for the most excellent care for our furry babies. We have been going here for over a year and I cannot say enough about their compassionate and consistently loving care. My big senior Ridgeback started with a horrible bout of stomach problems after ingesting his usual flea med and arthritis medication. Dr. Jones saw us as an emergency Saturday, then insisted we bring him in early Sunday to recheck him due to his age and concerns with dehydration and this hot weather to boot. He came and took care of three sick fur babies there on his day off. Most vets would have sent us to an urgent care far out of town for any needed follow up care. The other vets here Dr. Laing and Dr. Bach are equally competent and compassionate. We are so grateful for this excellent care close to our home. read more

Our 4 year old boxer cut the back of his leg. We called a few animal clinics hoping someone could squeeze him in (why do pets always hurt themselves an hour before closing time). The front office staff said to bring him in... that they would squeeze him in. I will no longer be commuting an hour to the vet I used to go to before moving to Fallbrook. The service I had here was amazing. Let me explain... My dog wasn't feeling too well late Monday into Tuesday morning, so I called the closest vet to my house to make an appointment. They fit me in within the hour, which was amazing because I had felt my dog was very dehydrated. I explained what was going on with my dog to Dr. Jones and we concluded that he was both dehydrated with a possible intestinal blockage. Dr. Jones took me back with him to ultrasound my dogs abdomen and explained everything I was seeing in the monitor. It was a relief because I had no idea what I was looking at. He later took the time to explain to me what was going on in the X-rays that were taken as well. Needless to say, my dog needed to have emergency surgery to remove what ever was blocking the intestines to be able to pass things naturally. The whole situation was very stressful and emotional for me as my dog is basically my life. While prepping him for surgery, Dr. Jones allowed me to accompany my dog until he was out. One of the vet techs(forgive me if that is the improper term), Connie, was especially amazing. She clipped and filed my dogs nails while he was out. During the surgery, I was told to stand by in the waiting area because once my dog was opened up, there may be other issues that would need immediate decisions. I felt that the way they handled that was very professional. They wanted me to see what they were working with. If things were not as expected when he was opened up, he wanted me to see the damage for myself instead of taking his word. I felt that that was the honest thing to do, especially when you're spending thousands on a surgery to save your fur babies life. Anyway, the surgery went well without any hiccups. The next day I visited my dog for about an hour where Connie's amazingness shined some more. She accompanied me on a very short walk with my dog to let him go potty. She explained to me some of what to expect in the next few days. She really made me feel like she cared about my dog as if he was her own dog. She checked on me periodically while I was in the room with my dog, making sure if I had any questions she was there to answer them. Even though having emergency surgery for your pet sucks, Dr. Jones and team made me feel the best that I could have about the situation. I will be using them for all my vet services. I have been taking my pets to Dr. Jones since we moved to Fallbrook in 2010. Through general check-ups to difficult decisions, he and his staff have guided me through it all with patience, understanding and compassion. When my 17 year old cat, Riki, needed fluids and other care on a regular basis, they trained me to administer at home which prolonged the life of my girl for a over a year. When it came time to make the decision to put her down, they gave my husband and I plenty of time and privacy to say goodbye. The team was excellent and treated us like family and my lovely Riki with dignity. I'm happy to say that In addition to our cat, Birdie, we've added a kitten, Jett! I did my research on the local vet hospitals after moving to Fallbrook and getting a Labrador puppy. I chose Alvarado Vet Hospital after reading the numerous positive reviews and due to the close proximity to my home. 1st visit was a new puppy exam. Went well, went over all of the routine, monotonous 'how to care for your puppy' garbage that they should have gathered I knew by my job title as requested on their New Patient forms (Humane Officer Sergeant). 2nd visit was with a very blunt, non mask wearing, male doctor who gave me his unsolicited opinion on my 3 month old Labrador puppies behavior ("full of it" and "needs training ") . Let's not forget this is an underage, not fully vaccinated puppy, recieving training in home. 3rd and final visit... Male doctor from previous visit reccomend splitting the final DHP vax and Rabies. Doctor today said it wasnt necessary, fine, okay, I know why they would split the vax but I'm not too concerned. Went ahead with both vaccines. Tech came back outside to give puppy back, asking if he was in training, same answer was provided (yes). Tech said puppy was a good boy, just excited. Puppy is in a down position next to me while we wait outside to pay. Receptionist comes out to collect payment. Has the audacity to say "Oh there is the bad boy " to my 4 month old Labrador puppy. My facial expression (behind my mask) must have given me away. She then said she wasnt going to make eye contact with my puppy because he would jump on her. Mind you, my puppy was in a sit, stay right next to me. I provided payment, noticed the weight for the puppy was not updated on my receipts and rabies cerrificate and requested all medical records because at this point I was so unsatisfied with this hospital I was certain I would not be returning. In all the years I have owned animals, and I have owned some rank animals, not once did a professional tell me my animal was bad. Not once did a professional make me feel like I was doing a bad job.
