DON'T BE FOOLED BY AMA INSURANCE! I went in to get insurance on my 18 year old vehicle. My wife and I are senior citizens. We signed the paperwork presented to us, which included a statement about a $100 premium retention if we cancelled the policy within 30 days. We specifically asked the agent, before signing the paperwork what would happen if we sold the vehicle, and he clearly told us that there would be a $100 premium retention if we cancelled early. The quoted premium for 1 year was $2,267, which is fairly close to the value of the vehicle. Less than 48 hours later, we found a national insurer who offered us exactly the same coverage for $450 for 1 year. So we went back in to the AMA office to cancel the policy (less than 48 hours of receiving it). The agent told us we would not only lose the $100 premium retention, but they would also be charging us a $100 penalty for early cancellation. This 'penalty' was not mentioned in any of the paperwork we signed, nor was it mentioned by the original issuing agent. We spoke to a supervisor, but she didn't care. She just said we breached the contract and would have to suffer the penalty for it. She didn't care that we were long time members of AMA, and she didn't care that we are seniors on a fixed income. In the end, we had to leave without any satisfaction because it was clear that they were not going to do anything for us. Their ethical practice and behaviour in forcing us to accept a penalty that was not mentioned in any conversation or described in any contractual documentation for less than 48 hours is despicable. Mark from AMA was very quick to show up, and loaded a car that I had just purchased very quickly and dropped it off right in my driveway. You can only do this once a year, but it was well worth it. I have been on the phone trying to talk to a live person to get a quote for a new membership. i moved from USA to Canada. so far, I kept my phone charging while waiting for the ama to answer my call --- not a single person came to the phone. after an intermittently calling for about 8 hours in 3 days. the female voice about how to adopt some honey bees and naming them bee-thoven, for about 200000000000000000 times. i would say ama in Canada is more like some bees-WACKS to a new comer's face! such beautiful country, such shitty company customer service! read more

Every year I buy memberships for all my kids and wife at Christmas, thinking that if there every was a problem that AMA would be there for them. My daughters car frozen up on Hiway 2 in Red Deer last week, AMA could get to tow the car for over a day?? Guess what the RCMP called her the next morning as they found her car in an alley stripped down. AMA sucks, everyone should cancel their membership to put this outfit out of business!! read more

Car battery died while out and about. Luckily it died in a parking lot and I was safe. But I was fat from home and have my kids with me. Booked AMA through my cover and got a notice it would be a FOURTEEN HOUR wait. Somebody smiled down on me cause after an hour of trying to start the car with no luck and getting no help from anybody in the parking lot, it finally turned over and I was able to cautiously make my way home. But that could have been SO MUCH WORSE. A fourteen hour wait for a stranded family. Blows my mind. What in the world am I paying for?!?! Tried calling their emergency line as well... Absolutely no options to talk to a human being. It's disgusting. If I'm going to be stranded no matter what, I may as well cancel the membership. read more

been standing in line for 20 minutes now. being second in line I didn't think it would take long. as the line continues to grow they don't bring out any staff to help. normally when I walk in and see this I turn around and go to a registry I'm not a member of. always quicker and no wait. Just super service here. I got my international drivers license completed within 15 minutes of arrival in the morning. They have a lovely greeter and the guest agent Jen was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the form and proceedings-- and she was a trainee! I did have my photos ready and a form printed from home, but she was super helpful in advising which address I should use to avoid any future implications. Everyone seems to love working there and I just saw a lot of warm smiles going on and customer sharing stories and laughs. Its a great environment when everyone is thinking about travel! I'd recommend this comfortable and bright location to everyone. read more

Staff drifting around chatting while the lineup is all the way back to the door. i was there to renew vehicle registration although I signed up and paid for Auto-Renewal. Which never happened. Last year. Cop dinged me$360 for registration out of date, same issue. I came into this place to have a document stamped with a Commissioner of Oaths stamp. Took a taxi there because I don't drive my car downtown where I work. After I got to AMA, I was informed that "we only do stat declarations". Yet again, I wonder why I continue to have a membership because this will be the 3rd time I have been let down by AMA. Calling for a tow truck? Make sure it's not on a cold, snowy day because you will be told it will take 48 hours for them to get to you. Arggh. read more

I paid my membership renewal in February, and called today for an insurance quote. the lady spoke to me rudely, accused me of not having an active membership. then proceeded to try to tell me the only insurance option policy for me- with 35 years no claims or accidents, was DOUBLE than what I'm currently paying. rude, misinformed and not helpful in any way. I do not have a membership with AMA but have been to this location before and have received good customer service. Today, I was rudely told at the door that if I did not have a membership I could not be helped, as this location was for private members only. Odd, since I have received service there in the past... when I mentioned that it does not say for members only online, I was angrily told "Yes, it does". Well I just checked and it DOES NOT. If you have the opportunity, drive a little further and take your business elsewhere. Good customer service should not depend on who happens to be working that day. read more

I had insurance with ama for over 10 years! I have NEVER filed a claim during that time. I recently got a new vehicle, I called ama to set up the insurance. I was on the phone quite a while setting it up. I added my husband to the insurance just in case he drives my car. I answered all the questions honestly, and I provided all documents Immediately. I was given my quote and I paid the year up front (as I've done for the last 10+ years). A couple weeks later I received an email informing me there was a mistake and they needed my husband's info. I called them and gave them the info. Then a week later I received a letter in the mail from ama with the updated information as well as a bill for the updated policy...thinking this was a mistake, I called them and was told no this bill was not a mistake and that the person who initially set up the policy entered in the information wrong, and because of that it affected my policy. Ummm no I don't think so. I refused to pay it. I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was told that their supervisor was gone for the day, she told me she would put in a call request and I would hear from someone on Monday. I thought it odd no supervisor was available in the middle of the day on Friday. I called back and asked for a supervisor, and was told the same thing. So I waited, and waited, and waited some more. I heard nothing all week! So on Thursday I call ama again and ask for a supervisor. I am then told that they actually dont have supervisors available ever it's all done through call request. So she promised I would hear from someone soon. At this point I was annoyed. I finally heard from a supervisor. She kept telling me over and over how it was a human error etc, etc and that I was still expected to pay the bill. I told her that was unacceptable, I was not going to pay it, it was not my mistake. She just kept repeating its a human error it happens. So I told her if that wasn't going to be covered then I would be ending ALL my insurance policies I have with them. She again just kept saying she was sorry but they were unable to offer refunds on policies. So I shut it all down. They lost out on 4 different insurance policies. I went elsewhere. I was quite pleased when I went to my local insurance agency and found that my policy with them is $400 cheaper a year and better coverage! So in my opinion stay away from ama! And definitely do not do the policy over the phone. If they mess up they don't honor their mistakes. read more

I had home insurance, wait until you get claim, and their adjusters, they won't listen to you, they will be good until you get claim.

we called and they said it would be the next morning at 855am. If had been hours, we called at 3:30pm they said it would be another 2 hours. we were scheduled for 8:55 am and they still haven't shown up at 4:00pm. It was only a 40 drive for the tow but they couldn't show up. this is extremely unprofessional and immature of this big company for the prices they charge. they give the run around over the phone and don't care about their costumers. read more

I have been an AMA member for over 15 years and I rarely use the service but like to know that I have back up for auto break downs, etc. I called today to ask some travel related questions regarding Covid requirements in Hawaii, but because I didn't book my trip with AMA (we have a timeshare) the agent told me that they could only help me if I had paid an "additional fee" when I booked my trip through AMA otherwise I would have to figure it out on my own. I regretted being a member of AMA. Today my car tire was low of air and can't drive it. No spare tire available. I called AMA to repair my tire but unfortunately they no longer repairing tire. Either I will drive it to the car shop and pay the tire repair or they will tow my car to car shop and I will pay extra money for towing then another money for tire repair because it is more than 5 kilometers. It's all about money. So now it is useless to be a member of AMA and I am unhappy about their service. read more

My family has been AMA members for decades, so when it came time for me to get insurance services, I naturally chose AMA. I didn't shop around, I was assured I was getting a great deal- plus as a member I was getting an additional discount. Now that I'm a university student, I've been looking for ways to cut costs, and one way was by reviewing my insurance. I've shopped around, and found MUCH lower rates elsewhere. I used to have Insurance on my car though AMA- they charged me $132 per month. I've recently switched, and gotten the same coverage for $84 a month. Now that its time to renew my motorcycle, I'm also shopping around. Nordic- AMA's insurance partner for restricted bikes- is charging me $363 per year, and wants me to pay all at once! I've found another company that will charge me $197 a year, and let me pay in instalments. All in all, AMA is over priced. read more

Go elsewhere for your road tests - the road testers are cold, never smile, bordering on rude. Worst of all they contradict the driving instructors My son took drivers lessons from the AMA.took the test with them 2 X with two different instructors. Failed both times- we went to an different place the next day and he passed My big issue is that the instructor told him to stop at the stop line and if he couldn't see roll up and stop again- the testers marked him down. The second time we did what the previous tester said, and still got marked down.This is one eg of the inconsistency between them While waiting today for other services, saw 3 other young people leave in tears. I just want to give a shout out to AMA. I have never, ever regretted my membership. They just do so much on top of the basic registry services. From towing your car to selling you maps to giving you discounts across North America, AMA takes care of it all. It's very much a one-stop shop of necessary services, and they always help you with a smile. They are super quick, and they are so welcoming. The catch is you have to be a member (minus one star). Back in the day I took my driving lessons from this AMA. That included two stuffy Saturdays locked in a basement stuffed full of sleepy teenagers learning about driving laws, as well as some decent driving time with my very patient instructor Mike (if he is still working here, then go to him. I can't speak for the membership or the value of their other services, but I went to get an International Driver's Permit and the experience and the customer service was stunningly great. There was a person at the door to cheerfully direct me to the right counter. The line went quickly because they had plenty of staff. After typing up the form, the lady at the counter offered me a seat, and offered to bring out the permit when it was ready. The office was bright, well laid out and well signed. It was immediately clear what services they offer and where you would go for what. I was quite surprised actually, because customer service is so bad at most places. read more

Called the roadside assistance line in the morning for a tow and was informed it would be a 1-3 hour wait, and that I would be recieving an update shortly. After 6 hours with no contact I called to inquire and was told it would be at least another hour before a tow truck would be available. Seriously, what a way to waste my entire day... Having used the roadside service a grand total of 3 times in the last decade, I would've been better off cancelling my membership and calling literally any other towing company in the city. read more

AMA Insurance is definitely the most overpriced insurance out there. Even in order to get a quote their questions are incessant compared to Johnson, State Farm, Allstate, Aon, or even Meloche Monnex. For example, they asked me how far is my commute to work, and I said 10 km, they continued with more specific questions on what I carry in my car, do I drive out of province, which cities do I drive in Alberta, do I ski or not? And those questions were just around work, while other insurance companies simply stopped at how far is my commute to work. Unreal AMA! read more

A few years ago I had an auto insurance policy with AMA. I was sent to the US for a few months on work (less than 6 months) - still working for a Canadian company and still having a home in Canada. I informed AMA by phone of my travel plans before departing and was not informed of any problem. I still had home insurance through them. While away, they sent a letter to my Calgary residence informing me that because I had "moved out of the country and took my car with me" that they would be cancelling my vehicle insurance. I opened this letter while home for a visit. I called their office and asked why they were cancelling my insurance when my vehicle would be in the US for less time than a standard "snowbird" and I was not using my vehicle for commercial purposes. I never received a decent answer, just ignorant responses. I will never use or recommend AMA Insurance to anyone, ever again. In the modern age of internet information sharing, I expect AMA Insurance should be out of business in the next decade or so, but sadly they will still be around, ripping people off. On the plus side, I moved to TD Insurance where I have had phenomenal customer service. read more

I have had an AMA membership for over 20 years. I have been very impressed with the tow truck drivers - their knowledge, and professionalism. I would say 9 out of 10 have been outstanding people. Reading some other reviews about the company in general, I am disappointed to read that there seem to be some problems with management, and perhaps pay. This is unfortunate because they truly have an amazing fleet of drivers who are intelligent and represent your company very well. Treat them with the respect they deserve. read more

Well they will save you money if you drive an older vehicle. You had better be willing to wait though. I have been waiting 3.5 hours for a tow to a repair shop that they said would be a maximum wait of 2 hours. I was called by their contractor (Big Hill Towing) over an hour ago and they said it would be 40minutes more. Poor service and untruths. read more

My husband and I stopped into Crowfoot AMA yesterday afternoon for some trip planning help. Matt K went above and beyond in making up a Trip Tik for us, ensuring that it was printed out and ready to go before the end of the day (it was done within an hour) which we really appreciated. He spent a lot of time making sure he understood our needs and trying to make sure that our map was accurate...after getting home and doing some more research, we found out that one of the roads we wanted to take has been closed for the past couple of years due to a landslide which explains why the Trip Tik wouldn't let us include it on the map! Thanks for your help, Matt! We're excited to get on the road and start our trip! read more

Don't use AMA, for booking a hotel room. When our family (3 adults and 1child) arrived at a Comfort Inn, that we had booked on- line, we were told that a room with only 1 bed was reserved, and they were otherwise full, so there was nothing that they could do. Our booking, showed that a room with 2 queen beds was reserved. They said that this happens frequently. The only place we could find to stay at, was rather seedy, not what we had in mind. There was no way to contact AMA. We had paid for the room in advance. I do not know if we will be able to get a refund. read more
