Although I don't enjoy going to any government institution or government-sanctioned agency because of the inevitable sometimes unjust added sytemic expenses involved, I really must rate this registry office on its obvious merits. Over a dozen visits to Express have been most trouble-free: their effectiveness in dealing with so many public concerns has proven them to be relatively headache-free. It seems obvious that this place is run by business-minded people, which in contrast to most government-oriented services stands out as special. As well, their multi-cultural staff all are courteous even with complaining customers, and efficiently keep focused on the task at hand while gently commiserating with the disgruntled ones. As well, they have to deal with all kinds of accents and troublesome immigrant concerns like learner's permits, licensing and registrations. Soothing... My last time there was this past week, and when I had to get some docs from my insurer in Edmonton, they made it so easy to receive a needed fax, and then told me I'd not have to grab another number to wait in line again, but just make myself known 15 minutes later. I did so, and in only another few minutes I had everything done. Cool, eh? As I see that some registries are not run as efficiently, perhaps we should help people go to this one rather than elsewhere. read more

Heads up for anyone booking a drivers' exam, the online portal for drivers' license bookings says to arrive 30min before the test, with the earliest slot being 9:00, but the registry opens at 9:00. I arrived at 8:30am for my 9:00am slot. The email you get emphasizes the importance of punctuality. By following this direction, I was apparently needlessly early. Staff got there around 8:45, which was fine, but I think either the email or booking system needs to be adjusted--for example, the first slot could be placed at 9:15 or 9:30. This would probably be better for staff too. This created a sense of confusion before the test (wondering if they had received my booking or the test would make me late getting back to work), and also wasted my friend's time who had taken the time to get up early and come with me. I also got hit with an extra charge for using my credit card when renewing my registration on an earlier day. Staff/examiners are overall polite. I've lived in provinces where the registries are not privatized, and have found the service to be more organized with more transparent pricing. read more

I went to the North hills registry in NW Calgary. They were so cooporative and knowledgeable. A counter clerk there (Hable) told me that I only need a "basic" road test to get my driver's license back. I got the test right away with the examiner Ken (who was also kind and knowledgeable) and got my license quickly back. Furthermore, Hable helped me to get 140$ back from the UNLIMITED REGISTERY in northeast Calgary because they didn't know the law and charged me more and put me on a wrong road test (they put me on an advanced road test! and charged me 147$!!!). thank you Hable Thank you Ken read more

Another year, another vehicle renewal needed... and an opportunity to try out a different registry! Who would've thought to make a point to try out a new one this year? Me, that's who! In previous years, I've gone to NU over on 11th Ave. This time around, I headed up to North Hill mall after reading Katie C's review for Registry Express. Holy toledo! It's as fast as she said it was back in 2009! I stopped in around 1130 today (it's a Thursday). My expectation was that they'd have one or two people on staff and I'd have to wait awhile like every where else. But there's a reason they call themselves Registry Express-and they live up to it! There were 4 people working the different kiosks and two numbers ahead of me when I got there. I wasn't sitting for more than about 5 minutes before my number was called. And then not more than another couple of minutes to process my registration payment (and a parking ticket or two). All done in one transaction, the 2012 sticker handed over to me. No hassle, no fuss. Just done! They also do all of your other typical registry services like name changes, driver's license, business incorporation, annual returns and a myriad of other services. In short, the examiner was rude, condescending, prejudiced and unprofessional. Before the test I saw in Youtube recent road tests in Calgary, but my examiner was completely different. He did not check completely the car, the hand signs,, did not check with me all the necessary car functions (all the lights, wipers, hand or emergency brake). I had to ask for instructions during the whole road test: when approaching roads that ended in a fork, I had to ask where he wanted us to go. Even worst, the few instructions he gave me were done very hastily and right when we were at the intersection (instead of saying "In the next intersection, turn right", he shouted "Turn right, now"). We had snow and there was still snow in the streets and roads. Moreover, the surface was slippery and layers of ice-water were present. The Drivers Manual clearly advices to reduce speed and go slower than the speed limits. When I left the parking lot and got in the road, I began driving at 30-40 in a 50 road. The examiner shouted and forced me for the whole test to drive at 50km under these poor conditions. This made me more nervous and anxious and thus forced me to do unsafe maneuvers to turn in slippery surfaces while going at 50km. He made me do unsafe maneuvers through the whole test and went against the Manual. When I mentioned this after the test, about how he is ignoring what the Manual states and making an automatic fail something that was not, he ignored my question. Amusingly, even though he did not mention that in any moment, he fabricated a "obstructing traffic" to the report to legitimate a faulty examination. (The fact that a lot of residential roads are changing to 40 in the next months to reduce collisions did not escape me but I was so infuriated that I did not mention it) I should have not gone through the test when I saw his expression when I mentioned the word "husband" in my explanation about if I practiced before. This was not an isolated moment, as the examiner reproduced, after noticing my "slowness" and deciding to force me to go at 50km, offensive stereotypes, saying that I should be a "man" with the car and control it, and not be afraid by it. In addition, after the test, the examiner made prejudiced comments about my country (Argentina) and drivers there, even though he clearly did not know the country since he was not able to pronounce it correctly. After the test ended, the examiner showed why he behaved in this manner and revealed the shadiness of the entire examination process: he wanted to sell driving lessons, and even tried to give me a trial after the road test, so I could opt and sign for classes that very day. The whole test, as it stands, was a scam and I felt deeply humiliated and offended by it. The whole deal of the GDL system is to have newer drivers in a safe and controlled space and this examiner clearly does not align with that, creating unnecessary pressure and failing and reducing points for things that are not included in the marking rubric nor in the Manual. When I asked and pointed out the conditions and what the Drivers Manual says, he just stopped talking and continued making prejudiced conjectures of the drivers in my home country. There are many complaints of this sort in Internet, even here, of forcing people to go at full speed and failing, for example, failing a motorcycle driver for driving at 40 instead of 50, of being rude and many comments even point out the prejudice and even racist demeanors of their examiners (a women remarked that due to how she was treated, she felt she had to be Chinese as the examiner to be treated with respect and, ultimately, to pass). Moreover, almost all the comments express a similar situation about trying to sell you things such as classes. It was a waste of time, of money, and an incredible stressful and humiliatory experience.. I would like to and I will do a re-test, of course, but in another registry. read more

It's just a registry, so I'm not going to get too excited, but sometimes it's the little things that count. Hmm...what makes for a good registry, besides the minimal ability of the clerk to type in your info correctly? How about a number machine and chairs instead of having to wait in line? Having most of the forms in the open so you can start to fill them out while waiting for an agent would be nice. Having cool stuff to do in the immediate area in case it's a long wait would be help. Being easily accessible via C-Train would be a plus too...hey, this registry behind the food court in North Hill Mall has it all. read more

I'm a little in love with Registry Express because it is fast, convenient and quick. Unlike many registries in Calgary, they take the express part seriously. The staff are cheerful and helpful, and you are able to take care of your business quickly and efficiently. I got my learner's license here ages upon ages ago and it was fast, quick and efficient. I got my license in the mail soon after. I was present when a friend took her GDL here as well, and it was quick, easy and painless. They deal with each need at separate desks, and so are able to process business applications and marriage license much faster. They're also open late, and conveniently located in North Hill mall. I recently moved to Alberta from Ontario and was dreading the process of switching over my health care and drivers license (it was a dismal nightmare to have to do it in Ontario), but the reviews of Registry Express made me feel a bit more optimistic. I went on a Saturday, which I thought might have been a mistake, but even though it was very busy, I only waited about 5 minutes. Worst examiner ever i have dealt with. I will not recommend this registry for road test. Examiner name Krista. please avoid this lady. First of all, this registry is expensive as McLeod Trail registry is the best for price and also the instructor is excellent. Before i started my exam, i realized that the lady will fail me and exactly that happened. I would never go there. They took $70 for as as you can get $50 in Mcleod Trail registry. Even they get cash and didn't give me receipt. read more

I took my driving test here and found to be treated fairly and with respect. I passed the test first go even though I was not perfect but definitely fit to drive. I was explained to what I did wrong and told how to correct in the future. I found the woman who tested me to be very pleasent and non judgmental. The staff in the front were quick and got to everyone in a timely manner. (It was very busy.) The people I dealt with were friendly enough. I definitely recommend this registry. read more

I just took my road test at this registry. When I started taking the test, the examiner was very nice, but when I finished the test she failed me because she is very subjective and rude as well. I would not ever come back here due to this negative experience and I recommend everyone to never take the road test here. Taking my business someplace else. read more
