I have had a long-standing relationship with Rescue City since fostering an elder dog back in 2019 named King. The experience with Rescue City in that foster was everything we could have asked for in a rescue agency. So, it was a little surprising that when we were looking to adopt another dog from the agency for our young son, that the application was met with a cautious approach and they took a lot of time to vet our application. I thought that we had demonstrated that we are model pet owners. The more I thought about it, the more I realized they were not scrutinizing our application for fear that we were not right for a dog; they were looking for the perfect fit for our family dynamic, and did they ever hit their mark with surgical precision. Within a couple weeks, we had a match that was not just perfect, it was as though Mollie was bred to be a member of our family. When you do something right, you never have to do it again. The process is as easy as it can be for what the agency is doing; finding the best fit for the benefit of both the family and the dog. It is a delicate balancing act that is not easy. When it comes to filling that role, however, they are simply the best at it. If you are looking for a dog, perhaps any agency would suffice. If you are looking for a companion, a family member you didn't know you had, I would not dream of going to another person than Stella, at Rescue City. Keep up the great work. read more

I would avoid this rescue at all costs. We adopted a dog in 2023 through this shelter and the experience was terrible. We were pressured to commit to a dog, told we had less than a few days to organize his pickup, and couldn't even MEET the dog beforehand. We were told he: was great in the car, loved people, was so friendly, was low energy. He's a working breed and is very high energy, has intense separation anxiety, is terrible in a car and needs to be medicated to even be in a car (probably because he came from out of state and had a traumatic experience arriving to NY), and is only affectionate with us. He was also "hard" to take photos of him so they couldn't provide us more than 3. We asked if we could do a foster to adopt - but because he was already placed in a home we could only adopt him sight unseen. They placed pressure on us to commit in a very short timeframe, otherwise we'd lose our chance at adopting him, which was surely a tactic. In total it cost $750 to rescue our dog, and I love him with my whole heart but he was NOT a friendly easy starter dog like described. The adoption costs are astronomical ($500), they didn't tell us it was a mandatory extra $250 for transport (wouldn't let us pick him up) and his flea and heart worm meds because those weren't included in his adoption fee but were required for us to get him (once we were already emotionally invested). On top of that there was a mandatory care call where the rescue owner basically lectured us for 45 minutes about his care, including insisting we never ever put him in a harness. This is a small 15lb city dog, literally all small dogs I know have harnesses. It was super preachy and not helpful in the slightest. Also: he was allergic to the food they had him on and he has a chicken allergy - surely the people fostering him beforehand should have picked up on that, we clocked it immediately. Shame on this rescue, who exploits potential adopters financially, lies about their animals, and puts immense pressure on you to commit. Let me be clear: I love my dog, but I wouldn't have committed to him and would have considered other options had we met him first and were aware of all of his challenges. I have been told by a friend who fosters that the experience is night and day - fostering is great, but the actual adoption process needs to be worked on. Go somewhere else. read more

My wife and I were looking to adopt a French Bulldog in the NY area this past month. After a few weeks of trying different shelters and submitting applications with fees but not hearing anything back, I decided to try Rescue City. After submitting my application with them, I heard back within 48 hours requesting a phone interview which was awesome news considering all my past applications to different shelters had been ignored. Rescue City showed they are different from other shelters by not only reaching out to me in a timely fashion, but implementing a fair process in that they do not require an additional $15 fee each time you apply similar to other shelters, such as FBRN. After the phone interview with Cassie, we heard back within 24 hours again regarding a meet-up with the program founder (Stella), the foster and our dog. They were accommodating in offering a flexible schedule and we were able to meet the following day. Rescue City provided more than enough information on the process and highlighted all the key steps in their adoption process as well as the steps to follow afterwards. Stella met us in Brooklyn for the meet to ensure the dogs and owners are certain the adoption is a good fit. There was no feeling of any pressure or rushing the process which helps immensely. Our dog was extremely tired from the 2 hour drive as he pants the whole ride and Stella was understanding of this factor. We ultimately decided on adopting "Chiclet" who has now been renamed to Nora as she hadn't learned her new adoptive name yet! Nora is doing wonderful with her new family and Stella has been attentive in checking in with us to ensure everything is going seamlessly. We trust Rescue City in facilitating all necessary and recommended veterinary checks as Nora came spayed and with a microchip (Rescue City will transfer the contact info to you after adoption). Nora also came with a 3 month supply of Nexgard and Heartgard, highlighting even further that Rescue City truly cares about the future of their adopted pets. If you are feeling the same as I did in searching for a reputable shelter, I would highly recommend you give Rescue City a try! Again, their $15 fee is only required one time unlike many other shelters which makes the adoption process fair for both parties involved. read more

We adopted Spiderman a few days ago and had a wonderful experience with Rescue City. From the moment I submitted my application, they have been helpful and kind. It's clear they are genuine animal lovers and prioritize the welfare of the dogs in their care above all else. My experience was meh. We wanted to adopt a dog and were immediately contacted for the next step. They canceled my phone interview about 1 hour( and that's me being nice) right before we had it. and said that someone got moved and they needed to reschedule. This was after making the appointment 48 hours prior to our time. Things happen but it was unprofessional. Would a doctor cancel your appointment for someone getting moved ? Or rescheduled ? It made no sense What was weird is that she had all this availability for three days straight to talk to me but then didn't. I felt like we were just being not considered and Probably moving down the list, and that's fine but be transparent and not unprofessional. People have lives. As someone who had a rescue for 12 years and had dogs my whole life shelters really need to loosen up. Part of the reason( and not the whole reason ) why so many dogs are left in shelters is because of crazy vetting. My application and my experience speaks for itself. We recently adopted our dog from Rescue City and they were great! From the very beginning of the adoption process everything was clearly communicated to us. I had seen a post for an adoptable dog on their instagram and applied a day or so later through the website. There is a small donation fee to apply to adopt - I believe it was $15, which isn't a crazy amount and either way will go towards helping animals in the rescue! After applying I received an email explaining the next steps. The same evening I received an email that we were good candidates and invited to interview so the rescue could learn more about us. We scheduled a phone interview a few days later. They asked typical questions like if we have owned a dog, how many people are in our home, what we do for work and what our work schedules/ daily routines are, any upcoming travel plans, etc. We ended up getting selected to adopt and scheduled a meet up a few days later. We had to bring everyone living in our home to the meet up including pets. It went well and we officially adopted our pup! The total process took about a week. I communicated with both Cassie and Stella through the process and both were amazing and so helpful! Upon adoption we were emailed with a ton of resources and a list of items needed for the dog. I had applied to foster/adopt through RC...and paid a fee for my "application". I was informed a few days later that I was rejected in totality. To be clear, I am a model foster for a very prominent NYC rescue (which I am happy to continue to work with but I was very interested in a particular dog that RC had). I have my own dog who is incredibly well-behaved and lives a very good life...one that I am jealous of sometimes lol. When I inquired about the reason for the rejection, I was told that it was due to my vet reference which makes no sense because my dog is up to date on every single vaccine/thing required. Every treatment she has needed, she got. I called my vet (who knows me very well....bc I am THAT parent), they had no idea what they were talking about. They said the only thing could be that I opted out of the heart-worm test last year (which is not required). This just feels like a scam...my references were GLOWING. This all started with a Facebook post by an old personal training client and friend. It just so happened on Sept 6th 2024 i saw a photo on my clients page and fell in love with this dog. i couldn't believe I saw this dog on my dog Medusa's birthday who passed away this past February. Something about this dog caught my eye. He reminded me of my childhood dog sparky who was the best dog ever and I fell in love immediately. I feel like it was a sign it was time. So I spoke with my husband and we put in the application. Our application got approved and an interview was setup with the director of the rescue. The interview I thought went extremely great! I was so confident that we would be getting a new fur baby in the next few days or weeks. The director told us we would hear back the next day or so. First off I thought that was weird because I figured it would take longer especially if he has to have other applicants that they need to interview. I figured it would be a week or so. The next day I get an email that our application was approved but we don't have the candidacy for Vince. Then they included 3 other dogs I might be interested in. I was truly devastated! My husband contacted the rescue to ask to reconsider us and was going back and forth with them. The reason was we work full time. I was so upset I ended up writing a letter to the rescue expressing how much I wanted this dog and that we do work full time but in the interview we said he would not be home all day by himself. We were willing to take vacation early to get him acclimated to his new home and we have plenty of help. My mother in law lives across the street, my sister in law is a town over, my mom said she would come over, I have a dog sitter who is a good friend and also his cousin lives upstairs. This dog would never be by himself. We tried to explain this to the rescue and they would not budge! They made it seem like this dog would be in a crate all day and walked at lunch time which is false. We understand that he is only 4 months old and he would need a lot of attention and care. Why would I get a dog just to put him in a cage all day?! They just assumed!! They didn't do a home check or even call my references to see we would be the perfect fit for him. He would have been in a loving home with us. The foster family wanted us to have him they were pushing for us but still no budge. I couldn't understand how this dog wasn't adopted yet?! I kept fighting for him but found out the other day he was adopted. Although I am very sad I am very happy that he found his forever home. I feel bad for these dogs they're missing out on loving homes because rescues can be TOO STRICT! I get it 100%. There are a lot of crazy and mean people out there that don't take care of there animals so rules are strict. My last dog lived till 17 I took amazing care of her and I have had dogs all my life. i was able to take care of them working a full time job. Me, my husband and step daughter are HUGE dog lovers. It just pisses me off that we get penalized for having full time jobs! If I didn't have a job would I be able to get the dog? How would I support it?! It makes it seem like you either gotta not work, work from home or be retired to adopt from this rescue! I want to love this organization and they do do a good job helping the pups out there but this review is base off the their adoption processes. I have a friend that foster for rescue city and was recommended to apply for the foster to adopt for a certain puppy that was adorable. After the adoption interview and foster interview, (after saying the puppy can't be alone more than three hours because they eat every 2-3 hours) I got an email that someone else was approved for the puppy. After contacting my friend she said "just told me they have her going to someone who is home all the time and can bring her to work if they have to go in." Which was understandable. Not the easiest people to work with to adopt a pet. Complete control freaks. First you had to agree to foster the puppy for 8 weeks and then after 1 week had the option to adopt. If you didn't exercise your option to adopt, they reserved the right to take the puppy back and make it available to others. In the past 16 years my wife and I, prior to adopting from Rescue City, have adopted/rescued 3 other puppies from shelters. None of them made us "jump through hoops" to adopt like Rescue City. It's "...their way or the highway"! They still considered Peppermint (our baby) a foster until the provision requiring spaying had been met. They wanted her spayed before age 6 months even though the vet we've been using for over 20 years recommended that we wait until she was about a year old. When we took her to Rescue City's vet in Brooklyn, they seemed somewhat disorganized but were generally nice. When we picked her up at the end of the day, we were informed that in addition to spaying her, they remove about 8 baby teeth without even consulting with us. And to add insult to injury, they lost an expensive leash that she was brought in with (they said they would look for it and get back to us - they never did). Complying with all their directives up to that point, we wanted to ensure that we were then registered with "Home Again" (the microchip service) as her parents. Rescue City provided Home Again with the wrong information, and it took us more than 3 months to resolve the problem and get listed as her legal owners. Their adoption agreement, which is over 12 pages long, gave them almost complete control directing us on how we had to raise our new addition, threatening us with "repossession" if we did not strictly abide by their directives. It even had provisions for Liquidated Damages. As happy as we are with the latest addition to our family, we would never adopt from Rescue City again. P.S. We noticed that subsequent to our adoption of Peppermint, some of her siblings, as adorable as they were, after being fostered had apparently been returned and were still up for adoption. I guess others that had agreed to foster were scared off by the adoption agreement. They really need to lighten up a little!!! read more

Was told the application process takes 2 weeks. That was in the beginning of July and it's now mid August and they never responded back. We were all set to adopt a very cute older dog who seemed to have bonded with us, we paid the application fee and filled out the application (which asked for a tremendous amount of personal information) and aced our interview. The young woman who interviewed us said we'd hear back from "Our Founder" (that's the term that was used over and over to describe this person Stella, whose name I found online. Apparently "Our Founder" prefers to be cloaked in an aura of mystery.) Anyway, we were emailed the contract within a day or two and it was EXTREME. The text felt very aggressive and controlling, many paragraphs IN ALL CAPS or underlined in red (how welcoming) with lots of "you must" as opposed to "we suggest" and a VERY short window of time to sign the contract and pay the fee (which was more than the website indicated) or risk losing the dog. It felt very pressured, and I forgot to tell you that we'd be paying before they'd send us the dog's medical history. All this to give an older dog a loving home. It really left a bad taste in our mouths, so we regrettably said no thanks. I strongly advise you to deal with another agency or shelter and avoid Rescue City and "Our Founder". read more

Where do I even begin. I've never known life without dogs. I've fostered with rescue city since 2018 and then I moved to Miami and rescued little pomsky milo from backyard breeder. We knew we needed a second for the longest time. One day in the middle of my work day, I was scrolling through Instagram and I knew chocolate (now Beni) had to be ours. I was a little nervous bringing in a second dog just because I didn't know how they'd react to eachother. After a flight to NY, a drive back to Miami, outside introductions and a couple days at home, I can see that these two will be best friends. They play rough but love harder. Beni knows it's only the good life from here on out. On day 3 we brought Beni to the groomers and they asked me his name. I said Beni, they asked if it's spelled Benny and I said no I want his name to be unique so I spelled it Beni and A girl asked me if I was French, to which I answered no I am not. As we were searching for a dog during covid lockdown, RC adapted their process so there was no contact. There was a lot of communication in the lead up to make sure we were the right fit for Yogi and vice versa, so by the time he arrived, there were no surprises! RC took care to make sure he was transitioned safely, in a no-contact delivery. Rescue City might be a good place to foster a dog--and I would never want to discourage anybody from doing so if that's what is wanted. But for adoption I would advise you to look before you leap. Our experience has been that they do not follow their own website, are unresponsive, unfeeling, and uncommunicative, and request higher application fees and donations than some other agencies. We saw a dog on their site that struck a responsive chord, so we filled out a "foster to adopt" application. A few days later we picked up the dog and her supplies in a parking lot in Brooklyn. The dog had just come from another shelter in New Jersey and they did not know anything about her. Turns out she was an eight-month-old puppy neither housebroken nor leash trained, with coprophagia, and unruly. There was never any phone or personal interview with the adoption manager, our references were never checked, and no home visit occurred. We tried to tell RC the dog was a handful and asked for more information about her; their response was to send us links to a couple of worthless u-tube videos. About a week later an adoption contract arrived by e-mail with a demand that it be signed within 24 hours. Up to our ankles in mess and not knowing if the dog was even trainable, we could not make a rational commitment for the next 12-14 years, so we did not sign. They then told us that under the FTA agreement we were obligated to keep her as a foster until somebody else adopted her. So we did, determined to train her and make her household-friendly. It might be mentioned that some other agencies offer anywhere from two weeks to two months to finalize an adoption; one week is simply not enough time to housebreak and settle an exuberant eight-month-old puppy in. But after a few weeks of hard work, the dog had settled in nicely. We housebroke and leash trained her, calmed her down, and were ironing out the other issues. We fell in love with her and she loved us. Now if you read the RC website, it says that people who foster dogs and then wish to adopt them are welcome to apply, subject to the adoption process. We made multiple requests but Rescue City would not reopen our adoption application nor allow us to file a new one. Each e-mail they sent us was a form that went, "We're sorry it's not the outcome you wanted ..." "Your application was canceled a month ago and will not be reopened." There was never any conversation or discussion, and no reasons were ever given. They told us they had other adopters waiting in the wings, but she is still up for adoption now. It was like trying to get somewhere with a chatbot. We also took the dog to one of their adoption events at their request and to their veterinarian miles away in Brooklyn to show how well things were going, but it made no difference. Realizing that it was only going to get harder to break the bonds the longer we waited, I finally told Rescue City that ours was a forever home for a forever dog, and we were willing to adopt the dog then and there. But if there was never going to be an adoption under any circumstances, they should take her back. They did. But nothing was as heartbreaking as seeing that poor dog with her head and tail drooping almost to the ground when we handed her off to the next foster family and drove away. read more
