Kiki also had two private training sessions with Sam (who's fantastic), attends AGDT's puppy day school, and puppy socials - plus, one of their dog handlers watched over night Kiki while we were out of town on a five-day trip. All of our experiences have been positive. Kiki is always excited when we enter the building, loves everyone she encounters (other dogs and all the trainers), and comes home exhausted from the playtime and mental stimulation. Two days ago my little sweet Maple graduated from the adolescent dog training class here and it was amazing! The class was taught by Denver and was very hands-on and practical. My Maple is a one-year old rescue dog and was very timid and scared of people and dogs. On the first day of class, Denver was so kind and considerate and adjusted things to help Maple get more confident with the other dogs. After each session I saw Maple get better and better and more comfortable with the other dogs in the class. At the end of this class Maple learned so much that I can't even believe it. We love AGDT! We rescued a 10-week old puppy from Muddy Paws Rescue in February 2021. AGDT came highly recommended, offered a discount for Muddy Paws Rescue alums, AND was conveniently located just 2.5 blocks away from us in the UWS -- what a win! As new puppy parents, we were eager to socialize him in a safe way before he had received all of his puppy vaccinations, and the drop-off puppy socials were PERFECT. These socials allowed our pup to socialize, play, and learn for an hour at a time and we gained valuable feedback from the trainers about how he did, what we can work on, etc. Our pup attended drop-off puppy socials 1-2 times per week until he was about 4.5 months old; even after he had received all of his puppy shots, we continued to drop him off at the puppy socials to continue with socialization and learning in an ideal environment. With feedback from the trainers (he was rapidly growing and ready for play with older pups), we switched him to adolescent socials and it's been a great fit! He knows when we're headed to the 85 St facility and he is SO EXCITED to go in every time. In addition to the drop-off socials, we enrolled our pup in the Adolescent Dog Training (outdoors in Central Park!). The 5-week course was a great way to learn the basics and set a good foundation for us to build on. I booked an in-person initial consultation with Amanda Gagnon at 5:30 pm today. When I showed up at their office at 5:15 pm I was being told to go home because it will be virtual consultation. I walked for 30 min to reach there. This company is totally sham and unprofessional. I was told she is the owner of the company and they didn't even bothered to schedule in-person meeting. The person who don't care about a dog in the first consultation cannot be compassionate towards animals and shouldn't be allowed to train dogs. I'm looking to file complaint with dog organizations. Totally bogus company, I strongly encourage others to avoid this place. I am writing this review in other UWS groups which I am part of. read more

Incredible waste of money. Did an initial 1:1 consult and told the trainer beforehand that my dog will not respond to food when outside. Despite that, she spent the entire 30 or 40 min walk literally jamming cheese whiz into his unfazed and disinterested face. She also didn't talk much which I thought might have been because she was trying to pay attention to my dog's behavior as we walked and would impart some wisdom when we got back to my place. I asked her a few questions on the walk to some not very enlightening or enthused responses then when we got back home she provided very little to no additional feedback. When we first got our puppy, we were completely in over our heads. We didn't know how to train him, and were especially frustrated with not being able to take him outside before his vaccines. We met multiple people who directed us to Amanda Gagnon's puppy socials, and started taking our pup 1-2x/week. The change in him was quite noticeable, and he is so social now! He loves all other dogs and humans too. We loved AGT so much that we continued on with their Puppy Kindergarten and Puppy II classes. Our good and beautiful dog just graduated from puppy kindergarten. With a degree his median lifetime earnings will be $900,000 more than a dog without a degree. He can finally chip in for rent. The classes were well run and very informative. The leash walking skills were unbelievably effective. I can walk down the block with my dog right at my heel without worrying about him pulling or jumping at other dogs. And this happened FAST! He also learned a lot of other standard skills (e.g. sit, down, stay, leave it). These lay the groundwork for an obedient pup. Great place with truly professional trainers. I've done private training with both Amanda and Gwen and both were amazingly helpful. My very large, sweet Golden Retriever needed help with loose leash walking and leash reactivity towards certain large, male dogs. Amanda and Gwen gave me the information and tools to work with my dog in a positive and effective way. We've also taken an agility class with Gwen that my dog (and I) absolutely loved. Update: Our puppy developed symptoms of kennel cough 4 days after we went to the puppy social. The vet treated her for upper respiratory infection (confirmation of kennel cough required a lab test that we opted out of). She had not been around other puppies other than at AGDT, so we have strong suspicion that she acquired it there. I see that other reviewers also experienced the same. We took Anger Management class with Amanda last winter. Honestly ... It changed our life! Having a reactive dog can be frustrating, lonely, and make you feel a little bit nuts. Of course we love our pup to bits and pieces, but it was beginning to feel like we weren't going to have any pleasant walks again and possibly never get to really interact with other dogs again! Our dog barked and lunged a lot on the leash. Nothing we did to correct it was working. We've taken puppy kindergarten, puppy day school, adolescent school and soon will be doing fun with agility. My wife and I had Amanda come by for an initial consultation session plus 4 follow-up training sessions for our dogs Toby and Howard. Every week Amanda brought an additional person with her (sometimes Sam, sometimes Tim) and all 3 were super, professional, and friendly. The issues that Amanda helped us with were: Resource Guarding, Handling, Elevator aggression, Barking at other dogs in the park, and Impulse control. All this in 5 sessions! Amanda was always on time, extremely friendly, and didn't just tell us to go in another room while she worked with the dogs - she explained the training, performed the technique, then required that my wife and I both perform it to her satisfaction before moving on. It was VERY much worth the time and cost. Amanda didn't just give us slightly improved dogs, she gave us the tools to keep making progress with them forever. In addition to working on the items above, Amanda also helped us teach the dogs (ages 6 and 2) some new tricks! They can both Spin on command and go Up or Off the couch on command too! Do yourself (and dog) a favor and work with Gwen Moyer at AGDT!! As a first-time dog owner, I don't know what I would do without Gwen's expertise and weekly puppy socials. Gwen is hands-down the best trainer I have worked with. She is professional, knowledgeable, hard-working and always willing to go above and beyond. For instance, I traveled without Elsie (3 month old puppy) for the first time recently and was very worried about leaving her with a dog sitter. Without asking, Gwen took the initiative to make sure Elsie was going to be in good hands, and even drafted a note for me to leave with the sitter, containing all pertinent information. It is incredibly comforting knowing Gwen genuinely cares about Elsie's well-being and is willing to go out of her way to set us up for success (side note: Elsie was great while I was away!!). Also, Gwen's training works like magic: we had one session dedicated to resource guarding and her tips completely resolved the issue! In addition to training, I knew the importance of introducing socialization early on (within the first three months), but I didn't understand how to do so safely (since Elsie was not fully vaccinated). AGDT's puppy socials, hosted by Gwen, have been a Godsend!!! Elsie absolutely LOVES them, and they continue to play a major role in her being so well-socialized!! I rescued a 4 year old dog 6 weeks ago and immediately wanted to get him trained to set him up for success and a better transition. I am so glad I did this and very happy with my experience working with Amanda and her incredible team. First, the staff were all so helpful, patient, and responsive via email. Being a new dog owner and just having had my dog for only a few days, I had so many questions, apprehensions, and anxiety whether a virtual training platform will be helpful. The staff were so kind and patient with all my email questions. Then, the virtual training sessions over 5 weeks. Being an educator, I know how effective virtual platforms can be if properly designed and well planned. Amanda and her team did this so well. Amanda herself was conducting the training at school in-person with puppies and owners (following proper safety precautions) using multi-view, multi-angle cameras. Then there's a dedicated trainer overseeing the online participants. We get to practice and train skills with our dogs in our natural contexts - something I believe is so beneficial for the dog allowing for natural transfer of skills in their own environments. While Amanda teaches and demonstrates with the pups in person, Victoria (who was also really amazing!) was observing the participants do training at home through Zoom, providing reinforcement and feedback to every single one of us. The online platform also allows for asking questions or sending private messages for clarifications and other concerns - very personalized, and quite effective. After each session, we get worksheets with tips and homework. My dog and I have both grown, learned, and bonded throughout this process. I am so happy we did this Virtual Adolescent Training Program and highly recommend this to those who need little or a lot of help setting their puppies or dogs for success. We LOVE the trainers at Amanda Gagnon. Our puppy, Theo, had done several rounds of classes with them including a basic adolescent (Meg) and a fun agility class (Cassidy). They've also done in home training with us which has been so helpful for things like crate training, better walks on leash, resource guarding, etc. We've especially been impressed by the "junior trainer" Gwen (although there's nothing junior about her experience - she's an expert!). She really cares about our dog and making sure he's successful with the training. She goes the extra mile to make this happen like rearranging her schedule to fit in extra training sessions and always responding to our questions over email after training sessions. I found out about Upper West Side Dog Training through my dog's rescue group called "In Our Hands Rescue". We received a discount for his first set of classes for adopting through "In Our Hands" which was what originally prompted us to go with Upper West Side Dog Training vs. some of the other options in our neighborhood. Our 20 lb terrier mix (rescue) came to us with no training and was a bit of a menace to start. We started with doggy manners with Naomi where he learned basic commands like sit, down, spin and we worked on some leash training. Was a great start! We then signed up for another set of classes with Amanda called adolescent dog training. Here our dog really started to master his basic commands with some additions like "wait" "lets go" "leave it" and had a lot of doggy socialization. I also learned how to be a better dog owner and have more control over my dog at the dog run. A lot of dog owners tell me to "just let them play" but I learned it is better to sometimes jump between the dogs and let them regroup and learn that massive growling and aggressive play is not always okay. In all, our terrier mix completed 11 weeks of classes and it is night and day since day 1 with our little guy. I was in tears a few weeks into dog ownership because he was out of control but now he sits without treats or commands and is amazing at recall in the dog park. read more

I first saw Amanda when she was working with a client at the dog park that I go to with my dog Pennie, a 2-year-old pit bull. At that time, I was looking for a trainer to work on Pennie's pushiness with other dogs (she can't take "no" for an answer when it comes to play). I was immediately impressed with Amanda's calm energy and demeanor. When I looked her up online and saw that she was mentored by Ian Dunbar (a well-known animal behaviorist), I knew I wanted to work with her. The first session was mostly a consultation, where Amanda came to my home to learn more about Pennie and me. She was amazing from the minute she stepped in--it's clear that she has a lot of experience, both with dogs and dog owners. She was so encouraging, patient, and very respectful--she didn't discount anything I said. After the consultation, we worked on some basic training (teaching me things that really worked with Pennie, such as new ways to teach "drop it" and "leave it"), and then scheduled future sessions (Amanda lets you know how many sessions she think you need, based on the consultation). However, between the first and second session, Pennie began to show some aggressive behavior, which really began to concern me, as it was not like her at all. When Amanda came over, she even noted that Pennie seemed like a different dog. She told me that sometimes sudden behavioral changes could be caused by a medical issue. Before that moment, people (from Pennie's daycare to her vet), thought I was overreacting about Pennie's behavior, saying things like, "she's a dog." Amanda was the ONLY person who took me seriously. She said that we should continue training Pennie as though she had a behavior issue, but that I shouldn't discount the idea it may be because of a medical issue. Long story short, it turned out Pennie had meningitis, which can cause behavioral issues. If Amanda hadn't made that suggestion (based on her experience and skills), Pennie would have gotten much worse, as meningitis is a progressive disease. Pennie is now being treated for her illness, and she and I are still working together with Amanda to work on her recent behavior (regardless of whether it's medically related or not), as well as on her impulse control. An amazing dog trainer isn't just good with dogs--she's also good with people. And Amanda is great with both. She's completely confident and knowledgeable without being condescending; she's upfront without being pushy. Most importantly, she absolutely knows and loves what she's doing, and she does it with a great sense of humor. Her fees may be more than some other trainers, but it is absolutely worth it. Because of Amanda, I feel more confident working and training with Pennie, and we will continue to work with Amanda for as long as needed. And of course, I will always be grateful to Amanda for basically saving Pennie from a serious disease. read more

We met Amanda through the very enthusiastic recommendation of another dog owner and one of her clients. Axel, our rescued Weimaraner, came to us on his way to a shelter. He had been left in an outdoor pen simply for breeding, with little human interaction and only being let out only to exercise. We had to teach him to chew a bone and chase a ball! The first time we put him in his crate and left him alone in the apartment, he broke out and did as much damage as a frightened 85-pound dog could do. After 3 months of never leaving him alone, we desperately wanted to socialize as a couple, outside of the apartment. We were at wit's end and had no idea how to proceed. We needed to be rescued, too. Amanda was one of the trainers we spoke to about Axel's extreme separation anxiety. We chose Amanda primarily because the other trainers we contacted wanted to use tranquilizers, which we - and Amanda - oppose. Amanda logically asserted that, while meds might alleviate the symptoms, the underlying cause would remain, and that's what needed to be addressed. When we began training with Amanda, we were able to leave Axel for 8 seconds - yes, 8 seconds! - before his anxiety set in. Over time, implementing the techniques that Amanda taught, we can now leave him alone for more than two hours, and that time period is now increasing in half-hour increments. The training has required a great deal of patience and dedication, and with tremendous encouragement from Amanda, Axel is now the dog we'd always hoped for. Amanda has great knowledge about canine behaviors and training techniques. She is as warm and kind with humans as she is with dogs. Aren't people really the problem?! UH-MAZE-ING there is absolutely no words to describe the Upper West Side Dog Training Team. I met amanda through a friend in the neighborhood who had used her. While at first, i thought, well.....maybe its a bit more than I would like to pay, but let me tell you a few things to bear in mind: 1) they take your baby for 3 hours not only on walks but to play! 2) you are paying for one of NYC top personal trainers and her team to NOT ONLY walk your dog, but also train them 3) they are so caring of the animals its amazing. I have had dog walkers before who just did the 20 minute round the block and i swear there are times when i think they just did the poop and bring back. I work long hours and there is not one moment that I have worried about the care of my dog in their hands. My ex and I share custody of our dog too and they are always accommodating on the pick up and drop off too. My dog was a rescue too that had a broken leg before we got him and has had a few issues with it being stiff. While its just a fact of life at this point, they have always made sure t look after him and let me know when he is having issues. DO NOT hesitate to use them! read more

We've been working with Amanda for about 6 weeks now to train our new Westie puppy. Her gentle yet really fun techniques have worked like magic with our rather stubborn puppy. We attended puppy classes with Amanda. She made it fun for our new puppy to learn the basics, and we then worked with her privately on some issues that came up for our dog later on. She expertly taught us how to train our dog to walk calmly on his leash, to stop nipping our ankles, to stop jumping up to the dining table, and to complete his house-training. Amanda and her team have been a life saver for me and my rescue dog Goldie. After adopting Goldie 5 months ago, I realized almost immediately that I was in over my head. As a year old rescue from the south, Goldie was finding NYC living to be a rough transition. I had several private sessions with Victoria who helped train me :) and Goldie. She was able to offer both practical and realistic guidance for both of us. I also enrolled Goldie in the adolescent training class to help solidify the training work in a more distracting environment. Training isn't a quick fix. I've had several rounds of private sessions with Victoria as new challenges have cropped up. But I am very happy to say that after a lot of consistent hard work, Goldie is now more comfortable around bikes, no longer goes crazy at the sight of a squirrel, walks well on-leash without pulling, responds well enough to recall commands to be allowed in the dog run and can walk through my building lobby without jumping on everyone. We recently adopted, Jack our "forever" dog from Puerto Rico. He's a mixed shiz tzu/Russell Terrier. He's lot of fun, a great dog, but seemed intent on gnawing on us, getting over-stimulated and jumping up on us and other people, especially newcomers to the house. I received recommendations for several dog trainers and then talked to them. After describing the issue, one of the dog trainers bowed out, saying it sounded like a difficult problem. We hired Amanda -- you pay more for her per hour than her staff. Although her fee ain't cheap and is more expensive than anyone else we contacted, we found her to be a good listener and gave us very specific tasks (plus handouts) to train Jack. We were diligent in following her instructions and saw immediate improvement. She came back for a second session, which was really just to add a few more train techniques. Initially, her staff said we'd probably need four or five sessions - which I usually think is a come on for them to make money. How do they know before they see your dog?
