Before starting our sessions, I was struggling with an over-excited Golden Retriever puppy. I had reached a point where I was losing hope, but Warren completely helped me regain my patience. His calm, expert approach changed the dynamic almost immediately. What sets this training apart is how manageable it is. Warren's training methods are intuitive, and his super detailed recap emails were a total game-changer. They made it incredibly easy to practice on my own between sessions, ensuring that we never lost momentum. We have an extremely reactive mini schnauzer and after working with a few other trainers with no progress we were completely at a loss. A few people had recommended Shelby Semel so we decided to give it a try and were SO incredibly lucky enough to be matched with Genevieve. I have never worked with a trainer so knowledgable about dog behavior. While other trainers in the past were rigid and just used the same, standard techniques that don't work for highly reactive and anxious dogs, Gen took the time to get to know and understand our dog and provided insight into his behavior. What I appreciated most is that she was always realistic with us and our training sessions/goals never felt idealistic or unattainable. Rather, we truly focused on little steps and management which also completely shifted our own perspective on how we should be engaging with our dog going forward. Gen worked with us through a huge move, the birth of our first child, and the introduction of our nanny and we credit all of our success to her. Even outside of sessions she checks in with texts to see how things are going and genuinely cares about the progress of your dog. We reached out to Warren Sears at Shelby Semel Dog Training because our dog was having a tough time settling around guests, getting overexcited with other animals, and reacting to sounds and animals on TV. On top of that, he had started showing some guarding behaviors around toys and food. It felt like we were constantly walking on eggshells and didn't know where to start. From our very first session, Warren completely put us at ease. He took the time to really get to know our dog and gave us a plan that was clear, doable, and tailored to our home setup. He explains everything in a calm, easy-to-understand way and focuses on helping you teach your dog rather than just correcting behavior. Every time we met, we came away feeling more confident and capable. I reached out to Shelby Dog Training in April because I noticed some behavior changes in my pup in March. We then moved in April and my attempts to curb his alert barking were failing miserably. Clearly, I'm *NOT* a dog trainer and I knew I needed help fast. Victoria reached out within the day to learn more about my dog. She asked lots of questions that I did my best to answer via email. I then booked an initial 90 minute session. Victoria came on a Saturday afternoon and we got right to work. Things we worked on: -Alert barking -Good pup behavior when guests are over -Leash manners (my dude is a 65lb, excited man who pullllllls) -Greeting other dogs -Determining triggers for him to lunge (this one didn't happen - so I have to really pay attention IF it happens; FYI it's only happened 3x ever but enough to make me immediately reach out for behavior training!) I rescued my pup back in July 2020 and we did multiple virtual sessions with Laura as well as a virtual tricks class. Laura is the absolute best! She's very responsive and was always willing to send me worksheets or advice via email. My dog learned so many tricks over zoom! I chose Shelby Semel private training because of the good reviews, however I had a very negative experience with my trainer and Shelby. I was looking to a trainer to help me through a tough period of time with my puppy, but this training experience caused even more frustration and disappointment. My dog has separation anxiety and I provided the details of my needs in Shelby's intake form. The trainer I worked with for my consult was very nice however she was not at all equipped to manage separation anxiety. She had no strong recommendations on behavior changes to address my dog's needs, which was frustrating given I provided this information in advance. She also committed to sending notes from our session within a day, and she sent them 5 days later. The notes were not detailed, and coupled with them being late, I was disappointed, especially given the expense of the initial consult. When I shared this disappointment with Shelby and requested a refund, she declined and said that all her trainers are equipped to support separation anxiety. She said she has a separation anxiety specialist, however this person was not offered to me until after I complained about my negative experience with my trainer. I understand my request is not within the refund policy; I do just want to warn other prospective customers that if separation anxiety is your issue, this may not be the match for you. I can't say enough about Shelby and her wonderful company. She has been the best human to ever happen to my dog Tucker. She trained him as a puppy and he is the dog he is today because of her patience and oversight. He was attacked and seriously injured by a dog and needed to recover not only physically but emtionally. He became afraid of just about anything and his fearfulness was heartbreaking to witness. Worse, the same dog tried to hurt him a few weeks ago, taking him in her mouth and shaking him. Shelby was there to guide Tucker back to his true self both times and she remains in his life today, always there to answer questions or concerns. She is truly Tucker's guardian angel! LOVED our class and trainer Laura. I adopted a puppy at the start of quarantine and didn't have a chance to do any puppy course or as much socialization as I would've liked. We took the basic obedience course with a group of other older puppies in the same boat. It was COVID-safe, learned a ton but also just such a fun activity. We took our English Bulldog puppy to socialization classes a few years ago, and it was the best! It helped him get acclimated to dogs and learn how to play well with others (an added bonus was that he was always completely exhausted after class giving us some much needed rest!). He's now 4 and over the pandemic developed reactivity towards dogs, which has been an extremely frustrating problem given we just moved back to the city and live on a high floor in an elevator building. We contacted Shelby and worked with Victoria on our dog's reactivity. After two sessions, he is so so much better! I no longer panic every time I need to take him in the elevator or when turning corners, and he hasn't reacted in almost two weeks which I never would have thought possible. We decided to do a private training session to help with our dog who is shy around strangers. We did not do any hands on training the entire 90 minutes and just talked about positive reinforcement/ redirecting, which we had already read about online. Unfortunately the day ended with our pup going to the emergency room because of all the treats the trainer gave her, she wouldn't stop vomiting later that night. Overall, terrible experience but maybe it was just the trainer that we got. We also never created a training plan for her, which was supposed to be included in this first session. read more

Corinne Fritzell is beyond, beyond fantastic. We've had several private training sessions with her and her counsel has been invaluable as we navigate life with our amazing but undersocialized and reactive rescue dog. We had sessions initially over Zoom, as our dog wasn't comfortable with anyone other than family members in the home. Corinne helped us increase her confidence and build up a strong and trusting foundation with her, and we have since been able to switch to in-person sessions which have been awesome. Corinne shares homework after each session and sends amazing re-caps, which is super helpful because we can reference them and be sure we're still on track. She's also so kind and answers any questions we have via email after the fact, so if something isn't making sense or our dog isn't on board for something, we can adjust based on her guidance between sessions. So great for puppy training! Puppy classes are very adorable and fun, and I always forget little no-no's for teaching dogs the basics, so it's helpful with every new puppy. The classes are pricey, but if you want to socialize a pup in a healthy way as well as learn how to train it, it's worth it. Higgins was able to socialize in a healthy environment (really- they have them play one-on-one and teach you what your pups body language is saying about other dogs) when he still couldn't socialize on the street due to his vaccine schedule. We never actually met Shelby in person, but the trainer we had was really great with the dogs and their humans (I've met trainers who are great with dogs and then NOT so good with people-- none of that here.) Our class was at the AKC Retreat on 42nd st-- super clean and spacious. Puppy Kindergarten is one of the best experiences you can give your pup. read more

We've had a great experience working with Frankie Banaag to train our puppy Jackson! We've had private sessions both in person and on Zoom now that we moved out of the city. Frankie is extremely knowledgeable and has been a great resource for us to lean on as first time puppy owners. After each session, she sends us notes to recap what we talked about so it's easy to refer back when we forget any of the details we discussed. We were worried Zoom training may be too difficult but it's proven to be great and we highly recommend it. I signed my dog up for private 1:1 lessons since he was getting bored around the house and picking up naughty barking habits from the next-door neighbor's dog. I booked Daniel who was absolutely AMAZING with my corgi. Not only did Daniel make my dog comfortable from day 1, but he also worked on reducing his reactive barking and even taught him how to "clean up" his toys! I didn't even know my dog was capable of such complex behaviors, but the fact that Daniel actually taught him is a testament to his talent and skill as a trainer. If you have any animal that needs training, Daniel is your man. He is professional, prompt, and very responsive via email or text. My dog really loved him and that's saying a lot because he's picky about strangers entering the apt. I also wanted to compliment Shelby's other training classes. I could not speak more highly of Corinne Fritzell. I had a myriad of issues with my 4 month old shih tzu, I wanted help addressing. Particularly since he is my third and I'd never experienced these issues with my other 2. The issues ranged from discomfort with handling at times, mouthiness when being brushed, fear of going up and down the ramp to our bed, peeing on the bed. (Beyond) excessive energy; to the point that Corinne even commented that he didn't get the memo he's a shih tzu. :) I had never used a trainer before, so wasn't quite sure what to expect. But Corinne was extremely compassionate. She's the perfect mix of professional and personable. And super knowledgeable. Our sessions went great. And Milo loved her. She gave me the tools I needed to work with him on a daily basis. Explained behaviors he was exhibiting and how to work on them when she wasn't there. And followed up with detailed email recaps that I could refer to during my alone sessions with Milo. I had purchased the 5 pack. And by the end, I felt confident that I could continue his training. My husband and I got a puppy during quarantine in NYC and realized we needed some help with training her after only a couple of days. With everything going on we were a bit worried about being able to get our puppy the right training and socialization so I reached out to a few dog trainers in NYC to discuss. I chose Shelby Semel because of the positive reviews and the prompt response she gave me during my process of talking to trainers in the city and I'm so happy I did. Our trainer Laura has been outstanding (as has Shelby when she's helped out with ideas/thoughts here and there). We started training with Laura back in April over FaceTime/video chat and it was awesome as Laura does a fantastic job of making it seem like the virtual session is in person and she is so engaging and helpful. She also responds to questions via email in between sessions with her thoughts/tips on things that we could continue to work on until we have another session with her. You can tell that she and Shelby really care about giving you all the tools you need to raise a happy and well behaved puppy using positive reinforcement methods. We've since moved over to doing our sessions in person (socially distanced) and the in person trainings have also been amazing. I think doing the virtual trainings is a great way to get started with dog training in a time like this and then you can move over to in person sessions when/as you feel comfortable doing so. They also offer a lot of group sessions, which we haven't tried but I understand they are very reasonably priced. Could not recommend Shelby Semel and Laura more highly! read more

Got a puppy, a rescue from Kentucky. Never had a puppy before and boy was she a handful. Hired Daniel from Shelby and he was awesome. Really knows his stuff and after 3 sessions, Darla (the dog) is really behaving and listening to me and I feel so much safer taking her to the park. Daniel made it so easy. He answered every question and concern and followed up with notes and instructions. It's funny, when you get a new dog, everyone gives you advice. Don't listen to them! Listen to Daniel!! We loved our Puppy Kindergarten class with Jenna. She is a phenomenal, knowledgable, and very personable teacher. Even though the class was full of puppies and their parents, Jenna gave personalized attention to each family. She got to know each dog very well and did a great job of socializing the dogs while pointing out what owners should notice about their puppy's behavior. We learned many skills and each week she provided notes via email for us to refer back to. She is truly a wealth of information. We can't thank Leslie enough for the wonderful six-week Puppy Kindergarten course! Growing up, our family did not train our dog well, so he had aggression and discipline issues. Upon deciding that I wanted to get a puppy, I told myself I would be well prepared to set my puppy up for success. I learned that the 2-4 month period is a crucial socialization time for puppies to be introduced to as many dogs, people, environment as possible. Since I'm close to downtown, I decided on Shelby Semel because of the location at SPOT Tribeca. Our instructor/coach Leslie was knowledgable, fun and overall kind! Surprisingly, I encountered very arrogant dog trainers who have a tendency to make you feel stupid. Leslie never made me feel uncomfortable, and was always encouraging! She made the class more of a fun workshop session for both puppy parents and puppies. The hour long class works on a syllabus where each week we learned something new. She also sent us review notes, and homework which was key. My Mini-Goldendoodle puppy Remy has now mastered sit, down, stay, touch, and come. However, the most valuable outcome from the class was Remy's confidence/social skills. The first 30 minutes is for learning while the other half is reserved for playtime. Since Remy was scared at first, Leslie put her in the "shy" group. I appreciated that she observed each puppy's personality first before pairing them up. Remy is a completely different puppy now and is always the one to approach other dogs first. Would highly recommend for first time dog owners, but would encourage everyone to sign up even if they aren't since the playtime allows the puppies to be friendly with other dogs. read more

This is a review for Frankie Banaag. Dog Trainer Extraordinaire! I recently got a Golden Retriever puppy, Theo. He is currently 4.5 months old. Although I have had dogs in the past, it has been awhile and felt I could use some help! I was referred to Shelby Semel Training through a close friend that got the name from her vet. They have a much different approach to the trainers I have used in the past. It is all based on positive reinforcement. Frankie comes for in person training once a week. She has a very easy going, calming personality . She works with Theo, myself and my 2 kids in order to make sure we are all on the same page. She follows up on every session with an email recap and instructions that I constantly refer to because it is a lot of information to take in and remember! Theo loves the "treat lady" and although he definitely is on his best behavior when she is there, he is doing quite well with us too! He learned his basic commands very quickly. We are currently working on day crating, leash walking/running, begging and boundaries. Hoping she is able to help out with his new found love of toilet paper and I will challenge her to train both Theo and my kids to put their "toys" away! We have been working with Corinne for a little over a month. I can't begin to explain how amazing she has been for our pup, Buoy. Buoy has made great progress in just the four sessions we've worked with Corinne. She has mastered simple commands, been much better on walks due to techniques Corinne has specifically taught us, recommended products we would have never come across, and provided us with in-depth detailed notes after each session to practice and use on our own. She takes her time and writes out well-thought out recaps of each session for us to have on hand just in case. She is punctual and never cancels on us. Each session is something new that we all learn, and our dog absolutely loves her! We initially could not have people in our home because our dog was super reactive and we've been able to slowly have more people in our house with the dog. She's also become better around other dogs on walks, which was initially problematic. Walking with her is enjoyable, and she even goes on runs now! I highly recommend Shelby Semel Dog Training! I have been working with Laura from Shelby Semel since February when we brought home our (then) 3.5 month Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. Laura is amazing -- within the first session alone, we had made significant progress on crate training and our pup had learned basic commands such as "touch" and "sit". Over subsequent sessions we were able to tackle housebreaking, leash training, and tons of fun/useful tricks that I can confidently say I would not have been able to master on my own. Laura is super responsive and also provides handy follow-up notes and guides so that we can continue to practice on our own in between sessions. Additionally, mid-way through our training we switched from in-person lessons to virtual lessons due to the current pandemic. Totally worth it. We've been working with Emily in private sessions to get our aussie puppy trained up. Her expertise is amazing and she's a pleasure to work with. We've got a much better behaved little dog thanks to her. I watched a lot of videos and tried to train on my own at first but it was a lot harder irl and Emily always has a trick up her sleeve to get our smart, stubborn little pup to behave.
