I booked a session with Andrea Arden because she has been doing this for 30 years, and you realize very quickly why she has lasted that long. I was really looking forward to enrolling my dog in the agility and fitness classes and was ready to pay online. Before completing my registration, I just had a few questions, so I called. Unfortunately, my experience with Kathy was disappointing. She came across as very condescending. She told me she couldn't hear me because a man was talking in the background and said, "Call back when that person is not there." I found that response dismissive and unprofessional. A few minutes later, Kathy called me back, which I appreciated, but by then the initial interaction had already taken away much of my excitement about enrolling my dog. I was genuinely excited to become a client, and all I needed was a few questions answered before completing my payment. Instead, I was left feeling unwelcome. I hope Andrea Arden considers the importance of customer service. The person answering the phone is often the first impression a potential client has of the business. I have a complicated situation bringing a new puppy home after my other boy poodle passed away at 14 and left his 10 year old poodle sister to grieve . Since I also have a 22 year old Senegal parrot there was a lot of work to do to help the puppy adjust to good behaviors and family rules . We signed up our 5-month old corgi Charlie for Level 2 class after seeing the great reviews both online and also from a friend that took the class. And we're glad we did! We were blessed to get Stefania as our trainer. She was great as you could immediately tell that she knew what she was talking about, she was great at discussing and also demonstrating what we needed to do, helped us correct what we were doing (if we were doing it incorrectly) and most importantly, she was very patient not only with us but everyone in class. She also had great control of all the puppies in class and could easily demonstrate how to do it with each of our puppies. We love how she was very alert to what our puppies were good and bad at and the little steps we could take to help them learn. It wasn't cookie cutter advice that she would tell everyone. Instead, it was very specific for everyone's puppies, which makes a world of difference. We could immediately tell the difference with Charlie from the first week of class and the final week. Charlie learned so much and improved tremendously from week 1. I would highly recommend the class and also get Stefania if you could. I wish they had a level 3 class that we could attend. Also, if you're taking it at BeautyFeast by 14th Street, we took Charlie to Boris and Horton - a really cool puppy cafe, that serves food, before class. She was able to hop on a zoom call with me for 30 minutes the first week I got my puppy, and her guidance and calm, confident wisdom about dogs really guided my path in what was a very overwhelming adjustment. Our trainer I'm not even sure likes dogs. She was miserable, unfriendly, not very knowledgeable and just overall ruined the experience. I can't say enough good things about my experience taking a group class with Andrea Arden Dog Training. My 8 year old French Bulldog and I took an "Intro to Agility" class--not because I expect him to make it to Westminster, but because I wanted to brush up on some obedience and also spend some more time with him working on new skills. That being said, this class was great for us, as well as other folks who do plan to continue into the world of agility. The trainers--from Andrea to Katrina (who led our class) to the apprentices--all have years of experience and education to back up what they're teaching. Katrina has even competed in agility with her own dogs, so she knows her stuff. Overall I am very impressed and pleased with the experience. My puppy and I just completed the Puppy 1 Training course and I can not say enough amazing things about it!! I was so intimidated about the idea of trying to teach my pup new skills and was worried she wouldn't get it and I would be wasting my time and money. But I could not be more wrong! Hannah is such an incredible trainer, she was so patient and broke down each skill and explained the why and how in an easy to understand manner. The class really focused on the basics- sit, down, basic leash work, and understanding why and how puppies learn/play. After each class Hannah emailed some 'homework' that I really benefited from as a solid resource to remember what we did in class and how. She was also very accommodating with any questions before and after class- both in person and via email. While my puppy really enjoyed the playtime the most, she did learn valuable skills which motivated me to sign up for Puppy 2 class. Love Andrea Arden as a resource for dog owners in NYC! We have utilized them several ways and have been extremely happy with our experience with them. We utilized their puppy play times quite a bit when our dog was a puppy to help socialize our shy dog. The puppy play times, though admittedly a little pricey for us at the time, were well worth it since the puppies get to play for a full hour under vigilant monitoring from their trainers. We tried some free puppy play times in the city and the quality was not the same. We have also signed up for other classes they offer (i.e. agility) to further offer more enrichment opportunities for our dog after she became an adult, and the classes were always really fun and cadenced really well for skill building. Katrina Krings was so super helpful and informative. We worked on a bunch of different issues my dog had been having (private training in our home). My dog is overall a sweet, good dog who can follow simple commands most of the time, but I had been super stressed about my dog's recent growling at our dog walkers and not wanting to get off the couch for a walk. The private training session with Katrina made me feel so much more in control of the situation, and we practice multiple commands and tricks. Katrina also corrected how and when I was giving my dog treats to better help my dog understand what I wanted. I didn't know how much I didn't know. She could even tell from my dog's behavior that the dog was possessive of me and that my dog would insert herself between me and another human being if we were too close, and so Katrina gave me tips on how to work on that and create boundaries - I had always felt it had been an issue when it came to having other people around the house but now I know not to unknowingly reward the bad behavior (which was what I had been doing previously!). I highly recommend doing a private training session with Katrina even if you have an overall good dog but need some help with training! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Andrea Arden Dog Training. Our pup Winnie (now 6 months old) has graduated from Puppy 1 and Puppy 2, we've done more puppy play times than we can count, and we've also had 2 private lessons. The classes and the commands we've learned have been invaluable - it's really saved us in potentially dangerous situations. The play times were such a good learning tool for not only Winnie, but also for us.. and she always left happy and tired! When we were still navigating being new puppy parents, we tried out another NYC trainer's socialization classes and hands down Andrea Arden classes and play times were ten thousand times more effective and helpful. We received more one on one attention and zipped through more commands in less time (and our pup was able to learn and retain the commands). We've had the most contact with Melanie as she was our Puppy 1 (along with Stephanie, who is also amazing!) and Puppy 2 trainer, we did a private lesson with her and she did most of the weekend puppy play times and she is FANTASTIC. Not only did we get her undivided attention in class about any and all puppy problems that people were experiencing, but she also happily answers questions via email in more detail. Had a great experience with private training with Stefanía. My dog Joey is a nervous rescue and barks a lot- at guests, at people in elevators, all kinds of situations that make him nervous. I was struggling to make progress and felt like the problem was escalating, but with Stefanía's tips, I've learned to understand Joey's needs so much better! It takes lots of practice but he has made so much progress, and I no longer feel like he is disrupting social situations. Not worth the money. Trainer basically informed same things you can easily find by just googling. There was lack of responsiveness in the communication exchange and I got a last minute email with instructions that I couldn't follow because it was sent to me just an hour before training. Very nice trainers, personality wise, and kind to your dogs but won't recommend the services for that amount of $$. One big issue was dealing with other dogs and trainer didn't even bring my dog out and we certainly had time to do so. In addition, first session is supposed to last 2 hours. My trainer was only here for 1 hour and 32 minutes and charged me the same. read more

Highly recommend! My experience with AA Dog Training started a year ago - after adopting my puppy in the late fall, we went to the puppy play sessions on 25th St. It was a great way for puppies to socialize on cold, wet days, to teach them how to play, and to teach the owners what to do and what's acceptable behavior. Melanie was awesome during these sessions - a lot to manage, and she really commands the room well. Then, I did private classes with Joanne at my home. We had some separation anxiety issues and a really terrible neighbor. He even called the police on Enzo "barking" when Jo was there! Again, she has great command and confidence, which makes you feel empowered. I learned a lot about how to live in my home with Enzo. A structured environment has really made the experience so smooth for him - and me! After, I did the Puppy 2 course with Melanie this fall. It was great! My dog has some leash reactivity, and they had coincidentally worked with one of his brother's too who had a TON. Melanie was so great at providing advice, demonstrating, and then coaching you through practices. She manages the room really well. Enzo and I have had ups and downs in training, but Melanie is so motivating and positive, and tells you you're doing a good job and it's normal. She has lots of good tricks to for leaving your dog home alone, and incorporating training into your daily routine. Also, they start with hand signals, then add on the verbal commands. I was very skeptical of this at first, but it totally works and creates long-lasting success. Also, they have a strict make-up policy to get people to go to all the classes consecutively. Yes it's annoying, but I really get it. You have to be consistent to see improvement. It works and makes it worth the money. Training is a process and requires owners to consistently practice. AA Dog training can't miraculously train your dog without you doing the work, but if you're ready to put in the time, it will be really rewarding. Enzo is learning so much! Andrea responded to my emails very quickly and consistently when signing up for class. I have a lot of experience with dogs growing up and my mother is a veterinarian so I had already started some training with my puppy and consider myself relatively knowledgeable in the basics. The difference is learning the best and fastest techniques for actually training the dog and them to understand long term not just in the moment for a treat. I had Cassandra as my instructor and she has been phenomenal. She taught me so many more effective ways of training and could answer any single question anyone in the class asks about their personal issues with their puppies. I actually ran into another lady on the street with a poodle who had taken classes their previously with her puppy and she was also raving about how amazing Cassandra was and her entire experience-so much so that she is going to do one-on-one training sessions. On top of the normal obedience training they provide so many tips on navigating daily life in NYC with your puppy and provide a safe environment for play time/socialization (which every puppy needs!) We just got an 8 month old Shepard mix from a shelter and he has some behavioral issues, Cassandra did a private training with us and it was the best money ever spent! She was a great teacher for both us and the dog, and managed to fit so much in, from crate training, potty training, appropriate greetings and how to get the new dog and the resident pup to get along. Really happy with the service, couldn't recommend more. It's been less than a week since the lesson and I can already see improvements. I highly recommend the virtual trainings: 30-minute sessions and offered on all sorts of topics (i.e. leash manners, nipping and mouthing, tricks). I signed up for one, and ended up doing six! Everyone at Andrea Arden, and trainer Hannah in particular, has been so wonderful and helped my wife and I learn, re-learn and adjust to make our Siberian husky pup, Reba, feel nurtured, stimulated and at home. The puppy playtimes were also a great opportunity to get our puppy socialized. As soon as she had all her vaccinations, we signed her up for two sessions, and she was able to get all that puppy energy out in a controlled environment. We're so happy with the results we've gotten with Andrea Arden Dog Training. We've been working with her and her wonderful trainers since our shih tzu puppy, Potato McTater, was about 11 weeks old.
