I took my 2 year old Golden in to see Dr. Kuesis for her annual exam this week. This is the 3rd dog…read moreI have owned under Dr. Kuesis care at La Cumbre Pet Hospital. She is an excellent, knowledgeable vet who is very compassionate and gentle with my dog. I really appreciate her giving me different options, not all that I necessarily follow, but allows me to makeup my own mind with all the facts. The tech and office staff are always helpful and cheerful as well.

In response to the owner…read more Your response is disappointing because it completely avoids taking accountability for what actually happened. Hazel did not present with a cough. She presented with difficulty breathing and gagging whenever she opened her mouth to bark or yawn, and that her bark was now non existent. Those were the symptoms I repeatedly reported. You state that medications were provided to keep her comfortable. She was sent home with an anti-nausea medication and an allergy medication. She was not sent home with pain medication or steroids despite the obvious discomfort she was in. So I'm not quite sure where the team "cared so deeply" during her exams or after. You also state that a specialty referral was recommended. That is not what happened. After the test results, Dr. Keusis called me and said Hazel's results were "just leaning towards old age like she'd previously noted". It was then 5 days later only after I expressed how disappointed I was with the lack of recommendations, lack of urgency, and complete lack of follow through, and told Dr. Keusis I was taking Hazel to an internal medicine specialist myself, that a referral was finally offered. I was left to figure out on my own what my next steps should be while my dog continued struggling with her symptoms, and continued to get worse. If laryngeal paralysis was being evaluated, why was Hazel's airway obstruction not identified? If visualization of her larynx was limited, why was I never informed of that? If her airway could not be adequately assessed, why wasn't an immediate referral recommended instead of reassuring me she was "just leaning towards old age" like she'd said? When the internal specialist said the swelling was "obvious". Rather than acknowledging where your care and communication fell short, your response rewrites the timeline to make it appear as though everything appropriate was done from the beginning. It wasn't. I wasn't expecting perfection. I was expecting my concerns to be taken seriously, my dog to be advocated for, and appropriate recommendations to be made without me having to push for them myself. Even now, instead of acknowledging that your team let both Hazel and me down, you've chosen to defend your actions and misrepresent what actually occurred. That lack of accountability is exactly why I wrote the review

Maybe they are going through a difficult time, like I think a recent retired doctor, but it's just been a recent change in overall attentiveness and level of care. There isn't consistently a place for the pets to wait for there turn in a quiet space. Families aren't all given the chance to stay in the room with their pets. It is considered a special request. Our cat ended up having to wait in the car to avoid the sounds and smells of the dogs. He dislikes dogs, so this already makes it a little challenging and stresses him out. We voiced other concerns with them directly, so I don't think it's necessary to include everything here, but just wanted to leave a review as feedback so hopefully they take it to heart to improve. We are sad to leave this practice. They were so friendly and caring until the end of our time having our cat as a patient. I am not leaving a bad rating, just 3 stars because the vets are actually really skilled. But the admin staff and support from the techs hasn't felt up to par recently. Hopefully things get back on track.

However in the morning I noticed he had several "foxtails" embedded in his pajamas (hairless dog - wears clothes on cool days) then I noticed the swelling between back toes and knew he had a foxtail. I called my friends at St. Frances Animal Hosp but they were swamped with only one vet and closing soon... but they told me about UVC - I drove over and within an hour we were done! My pup as recovering from sedative, foxtail in a test tube to share as a warning to friends and neighbors and a GREAT experience with highly skilled staff and professional, friendly, experienced and well trained veterinarian. What a welcome practice added to SB! Walk-in Urgent Care Vet for non-critical emergency care at its best! KR, (DVlong time SB resident.

Without running any tests the vet came back and said it might be cancer. I acknowledged that may be the case but thought it was alarmist and premature to say that. The technician came back after cleaning the ear up to say they at this point they do agree it's a wound with possible infection, not cancer. Although they wanted to meet with me to go over the treatment and meds before I left, they forgot to put an antibiotic medicine dispenser in my bag, and three separate times I had to remind them to go back and give my (feral) cat his first dose of antibiotics, and flea meds, and remind them again to check for worms. They also forgot to give me topical antiseptic pads so I can clean the wound. I think they are training young interns who have no idea what they are doing.

From the moment Hazel was seen, they were thorough, compassionate, and genuinely committed to finding answers. Every recommendation and diagnostic step was explained clearly, and they wasted no time moving forward with the tests and procedures needed to determine what was causing her symptoms. What impressed me most wasn't just their medical knowledge, but the level of care they showed both Hazel and me. When her symptoms worsened and I brought her back to the ER, the team treated her with urgency, kindness, and compassion. They reassured me throughout the process and made me feel like I wasn't facing this alone. Dr. Whitney has been exceptional. She has patiently answered every question I've had, communicated honestly, referred us to the appropriate specialists when needed, and has checked in repeatedly to see how Hazel is doing. That kind of follow-up and genuine concern is something every pet owner hopes for when their dog is sick. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Whitney and the entire Internal Medicine team for their dedication, professionalism, and compassion. They have made an incredibly stressful situation much more manageable, and I wouldn't hesitate to trust them with Hazel's care again. Thank you for treating her as if she were your own.

We called first to let them know we were coming and to check that Hal could be seen. We were brought right in, and Hal was carefully taken back. The waiting room was full of books and photos-very welcome distractions while we waited. We were updated periodically, and everyone was so kind and patient with our questions and worry. Thankfully it was nothing life-threatening and we were able to take Hal home after he was examined, treated and observed for a bit. We were sent home with very detailed instructions about his medications and care. We are so grateful that AVS was available to care for Hal, and that he got such caring and wonderful treatment. You can tell that they are truly animal loving humans.
