I love the food at Amara and have often stopped in for a delicious chocolate chip cookie and a latte as a pick me up during the pandemic. However I have gotten sick two different times from their Purple Eggs and Breakfast Sandwich, both of which have similar ingredients. I brought my three kids under 4, the two yr old fell back out of a wooden fold up chair and hit his head on the concrete floor, dropping his two dollar cookie. My friend and I came here because we're both gluten-free (for medical, not by choice) and wanted to explore a bit. We got the smashed avocado toast on gluten-free bread with prosciutto ($9). It was exactly how you would imagine it - smash an avocado, smear it onto toast and sprinkle prosciutto on top. I wasn't impressed and not so satisfied. It's hard to believe that the foods and beverages are gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, paleo, etc. They certainly do not taste like that cardboard crap that so many gluten-free items taste like. This place is in a quiet neighborhood, so it's nice and relaxing. The place isn't to big, it's cozy and has seating outside as well. The music was chill. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Corrina(I hope I got the name right) the lady who helped me suggested quinoa and veggies, with two poached eggs for myself. I told her that I am on a detox and what she suggested was a perfect fit. I am a long time Highland Park resident and I had visited this establishment once before when I was in my early 20s, at the time I felt like it was overpriced and not super amazing coffee or pastry. I thought maybe it's just a bit not my taste and out of my budget. Now over 6 years later I needed a bite to eat in the middle of working from home and I thought I would give it another try. I ordered (2) M.O.E Breakfast Sandwich and a Drip Coffee and MAN was I disappointed. The sandwich was tiny which maybe for a chubby girl is perception BUT the coffee was SO watered down it was like they ran out of coffee and still poured it. My partner ordered a chai which was way too spiced to drink it . Mind you we are chai enthusiasts but not snobs. Overall disappointed specially after paying over $35. And I was more bummed that they ask if you want to leave a tip which is somewhat of an extra pressure to pay extra which makes me feel even more disappointed because in good faith I did tip extra that day! And whipped sweet butter. They gave a warn cup of syrup to add to it. I felt like I was eating a loaf cake. I would go back for the pancakes. I also tried the avocado toast. We added eggs and prosciutto to it. I was not crazy about the orange sauce drizzled on the toast but my partner loved it. The toast was nice, crunchy, but not overly toasted. They have really amazing freshly squeezed orange juice in a glass jar sitting in ice--perfect pairing for the hotter summer mornings. I had a great experience here. I've been trying to be mindful of my gluten intake, but I'm passionate about pancakes. Enter Amara! A friend of mine told me about it - I live just up the street, and I had no idea they existed! In all fairness, I was out of the country for the last 5 months. The kind young man chatted with me about drinks so I could find something that I was looking for. I settled on the mocha. I had placed it on my table, went and grabbed some napkins, started to get settled in. As my friend entered, I tapped the table as I stood up to greet her. AHHHHHhhhhhh oops. I instantly spilled my entire drink all over the table and floor. Typical me. The gentleman working sprung into action to help clean it up, and he was really sweet about it. Of course I felt horrible about it, but he was kind and reassured me it wasn't a big deal. He then remade my drink for me. My pancakes came at last and they too were delicious! I was really quite pleased with my entire experience here. There are a couple of outdoor tables, and about 3-4 tables inside. When I arrived, all tables were full, but luckily someone was leaving as I was ordering. I set up camp, and my friend and I comfortably sat and caught up for almost 2 hours. We never felt rushed. My mom, aunt and I stopped here for breakfast (7/14) on our way home to San Jose. I'm recently gluten free and dairy free and have spent too many hours searching for places to eat in my area but came up with very few options. I did a quick search for gluten free breakfast near us and honestly expected the same results BUT Amara Kitchen was the first place to pop up. We were kinda thrown by the outside appearance and almost didn't go in but we're so glad we did! We ordered the buckwheat pancakes, avocado toast with poached eggs on the side and the ranchero egg pot. Everything was amazing. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection! On our way out I decided to buy a few pastries, the chocolate chip cookies are so good I don't even have words for it. My boyfriend and I stopped by for a quick cup of coffee and I was excited to try this place out with all the reviews but when we walked in everyone seemed so miserable. I didn't expect anyone to run at us and smile the whole time but not even a "welcome in" and it seemed like it was a chore to take our simple coffee order. There weren't a lot of people eating in there and we were the only people in line. And to make it worse the guy that brought my boyfriends coffee slammed it in front of us as if we insulted him or something. We were quick to order and didn't linger around so I really don't know why they were being so rude. Besides the rude staff the place is cute. This was my first (and last) time coming here. I got a coffee, avocado toast to share, a side of prosciutto, and the pumpkin buckwheat pancakes. I was extremely unimpressed by the service...you get your own drinks, utensils, etc. You don't get creamer or sugar for the table, you have to walk up to a tiny table that is generally behind people waiting in line to order. They gave us 3 napkins for our table of 4 people. The cashier didn't greet me and ignored me while talking to a co-worker while looking at her iPad. At one point when a waitress brought one of our dishes out, I asked "do you do refills of coffee?" She said yes and proceeded to walk away...I wasn't asking on a theoretical basis, I wanted more coffee. They didn't bring my prosciutto until I asked for it. It became almost comical how bad the service was. The avocado toast was OK, but it came on a really dense bread that I wasn't a fan of. The coffee was good, but the pancakes were just...gross. They were super dense and had a weird texture and flavor. Another friend ordered the same pancakes as me and after almost an hour of waiting (and other people receiving their food and the aforementioned pancakes), they told her they were out of buckwheat. She got a refund and we went for second breakfast at La Monarca. Unless you're vegan/paleo, I wouldn't recommend the food...At least not what we ordered. The service is really the reason I'm giving 1 star though. The staff wasn't friendly in the slightest and I honestly regretted tipping (which you have to do when ordering at the counter). read more

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, and while I love eating healthy, I often find salads very lacking. But the food here was just so scrumptious! It was packed with flavor, portioned perfectly, and was extremely satisfying. I ordered the green eggs, and it was surprisingly filling. It comes with a salad that's perfectly dressed (excess vinaigrette is such a pet peeve of mine), poached eggs, beets, delicious sweet potato chips, the best pesto sauce ever, fresh avocado, and gluten-free bread on the side. It was so so so good. I really wanted to buy a whole loaf of that bread but, alas, they wouldn't let me :( My friend ordered the paleo pancakes, despite her severe dislike of anything healthy-sounding, and they turned out to be delicious!
