What a beautiful & clean store. They display each of their pastries made for the day on your right when you walk in. I ordered a Pepita slice, Churro croissant, & Concha. The pepita slice was a fluffy cake like square with pumpkin seeds baked in to the top adding a crunchy texture. The churro croissant was a sweeter croissant with the sugar topping & flakey. The concha was soft & fresh baked- I could eat more than one of these. Parking- street parking

There's street and paid lot parking to get here. It's small and narrow inside. You'll likely take your drinks to-go. Once you order you'll likely wait outside for your drinks. They'll call out the name for the drinks. The staff are nice and friendly. I got the LA smog (hot). The drinks are a bit pricey, especially getting this drink iced. It does taste pretty good and you definitely get the earl grey flavor! It's not too sweet and not too hot. I ended up finishing my drink really quick.

This place is my new obsession. The design, the vibe of the workers, the drinks, the pastries. Everything is immaculate. I honestly need the interior designer to come do my house like it's so chic and has so much character. This place is so small, it's easy to miss. In fact I literally walked right past it. As far as I know, it's street parking only. I'll admit, I was super hesitant about the LA Smog because when you think about a coffee spot with Hispanic / Latin influence, you expect the typical, horchata latte, abuelita chocolate type drinks. But the LA smog is their take on a London fog. And the cold foam on top of it is corn husk infused which also made me hesitant. Damn, I was so dumb for doubting. The foam elevates the flavor profile. One sip and it was game over for me. This drink made me obsessed with this place. My friend got a cafe de olla and it was also delicious, but when i told her i wanted to come back since i was craving the LA Smog, she quickly said she'd come too because she also wanted an LA Smog after she tried mine the first time. Unfortunately we haven't tried any of the pastries, but that will change and I'll come back and update my review.

The desserts here are absolutely delicious! We sampled our way through most of them and I really enjoyed them all! Prices are a bit high and the service could've been better, but the desserts were tasty. Very small space, I suggest taking it to go as there is just some high tops to sit at. I will also have to come back and try their coffee next time. Great option if you're looking for a sweet treat in the area!

First time here & will be back! Love the ambience and vibe. Very unique menu!! Joseph is so sweet. He recommended us the LA SMOG EARL GREY TEA LATTE W/ COLD WITH CORN HUSK FOAM & CAFE DE OLLA LATTE W/ CARAJILLO FOAM. Literally 100/10 soo fire. Joseph was so informative in telling us abt the cafe brand & their pastries. Sadly we came too late & their most popular items were sold out - so come early! But Canela means cinnamon so their drinks has a hint of spice in it, super unique and delicious! Highly recommend this place! - street parking

Open for just over a year Santa Canela finds pastry chef Ellen Ramos rethinking the traditional Panaderia with better ingredients, modern design and French technique from her small shop in Highland Park. Formerly responsible for Pastry at Frogtown's Mexican Seafood restaurant Loreto, the choice to strike out on her own in February 2025 almost immediately successful, guests at Santa Canela will discover a seasonally-changing menu tucked behind glass while staff busies themselves pouring Horchata and Burnt Cinnamon Lattes. No doubt championed by social-media, freshly piped LA-shaped Churros fried to order a necessity for first time visitors, it is after every crisp bite is gone that the humble Concha takes center stage with a lighter-than-average crumb gussied up by Cream. Certainly not a spot for 60-cent Pan Dulce, most items ranging $6 to $9, a look at Viennoiserie shows Chef Ramos far more talented than the usual East Los Angeles Baker whether one opts for a Croissant rolled in Cinnamon Sugar or Brittany's signature Kouign Amann renamed La Odette around a pool of Cajeta.

I really had great expectations for this place. Social media really hyped this place up. It's a small café, literally only big enough to fit 3 people at a time. The set up is a little strange to me but whatevs, I was there for the baked goods. So the large 'display case' is filled with mostly boxes with a small section of pastries that are available in the corner. These are just that. A display. The actual pasties are sitting on a baking rack in the open air next to the cashier/barista/pastry server. Zero personality btw. I ordered 6 items and paid almost $50. The LA churro was dry, seemed like a couple days old, same with the Maracuya danish and the plain concha. The Odette had to be the best of the bunch, had good flavor although a little chewey for my taste. Overall was disappointed with the quality for the price point. Not sure which is their selling point, the coffee or the baked good, but they need to figure it out soon. I thought about returning for the coffee but that's a hard sell now based on the comments here. Maybe I expected this to be like a typical Mexican bakery where you walk up and pick your pan dulce from the display cases. HLP used to have one and I miss it. Nothing else in the area comes close. Pricing for reference

This is the Home of "Thee LA churro"! This is why I needed to try this spot, but now I'm addicted to their burnt cinnamon latte. My second time here I tried their cold cream for an extra almost 3 dollars so my bill comes out to like $30 including my pistachio boda cookies, and one pastry. Not gonna lie it's overpriced, but totally worth it. My limit is once a week. Parking is convenient behind and just sad that they don't carry no nonfat milk. I also think the owner should put those stick up lights in the display case because it is hard to see in the morning the pastries with all the sun glare. Definitely give them a try. See you guys Wednesday morning!

I saw this on Instagram and had to check it out. This place is cute but pretty small. I went on a Sunday around 10 AM and it was pretty empty. I got the cafe de olla which was good (4/5). The churros, croissant, and quesadilla were 4/5 too. It's a solid place, but pricey enough to not go more often sadly.

Small bakery/ coffee shop (seriously one of those blink and you might miss it spaces) along a high pedestrian traffic area in Highland Park. With the risk of sounding that I don't really know what I'm talking about, I believe the pastries and beverages here are mostly influenced by Mexican culture (mixed with LA and some other cultures; e.g. the churro croissant, etc). The folks here are very friendly and patient and helpful when explaining the drinks and pastries. The space itself it really small. There's some seating outside, but this place is conducive to coming in and giving your order than waiting in a nook or clear area until your order is ready. During busier times, I can see people having to wait right outside. I came by and got the LA Smog, which is their play on the London Fog. It was tasty for sure and fun to drink with a creamy top that gave differing textures. I also got a one of the conchas and a churro croissants. Both pastries were good and had a fun novelty factor. Would love to come back and try their other baked offerings. There is street parking, but since this is a pretty busy area, it may be challenging to park right out front. I parked a few blocks away, but didn't mind the walk.

Obsessed with this panadería. Every pan and pastry is beautifully done. I've been twice now and it hasn't disappointed. On my first visit, I tried the LA Churro -- light, airy, and absolutely worth the wait. I also had La Odette, which ended up being my favorite: buttery, flaky perfection with cajeta tucked inside. On today's visit, we went for the strawberry morita donut. I'm not usually a jelly-filled donut girly, but this completely surprised me -- in the best way. It's a long-john-shaped morita yeast donut filled with a sweet, tart, and spicy strawberry-morita chile jam. That unexpected heat takes the classic jelly donut to a whole new level. To drink: the café de olla latte with carajillo cold foam. And that carajillo cold foam? INSANE. Service: Welcoming and kind! Seating is limited.

Earlier this year, I read about executive pastry chef Ellen Ramos' (a veteran of Loreto, a Mexican seafood-forward Restaurant) newly opened Highland Park bakery and cafe in an article published by the Eater LA newsletter. I was intrigued by pastry chef Ramos' Salvadoran and Mexican heritage, offering upscale Angeleno pastry offerings. So, in preparation for our annual Holiday visit to Los Angeles, I read another Eater LA article posted in early November, bookmarked Santa Canela Bakery and Cafe, and suggested to my brother-in-law that we go there. After picking up our tamales at Boyle Heights' La Mascota Bakery, we followed our vehicle's GPS for about 7 miles to Santa Canela Bakery and Cafe. As we approached the bakery's address at N Figueroa Street, we started to worry because we didn't see any available metered street parking, so we turned onto N Avenue 56, where we luckily found an attached parking lot behind the building. From the Eater LA article, I was forewarned about the limited seating (an indoor 2-seat counter and three tables outdoors) and decided it would be best for our foursome to bring home our newly found treasures. Upon entry, we were cheerfully welcomed and even thanked for visiting the bakery. The bakery/cafe's interior decor had an understated elegance, almost museum-like, yet warm and charming, with dark wood cabinetry and marble countertops. Their beverage menu was posted along their ten individual pastry display cases, which, I assume, often featured rotating selections alongside their core menu items. The narrow space seemed a bit claustrophobic but was offset by the room's high ceiling. After taking pictures of the pastries while my brother-in-law chatted with the barista and counterhelp, I quickly placed our beverage and pastry orders because a crowd had formed behind us. I was interested in the café de olla lattes (Mexican coffee brewed with cinnamon and piloncillo or panela (unrefined brown sugar)) to compare with another Mexican coffeehouse's flavors and the Burnt Cinnamon Latte. After all, the bakery's name, Santa Canela, translates to "Saint Cinnamon." Don't sleep on the pastry called "La Odette," named after Mexico City's Odette, by baker Odette Olavarri, who served as a menu consultant to Santa Canela Bakery. La Odette is a Mexican twist on the classic Bréton/Normandy buttery laminated pastry, Kouign Amann. La Odette's rich, flaky, buttery layered (laminated) pastry was accented with a pool of cajeta as a filling. The tender, yet flaky pastry seemed more decadently rich in butter flavor, while its exterior had a pleasing crunch from the baked caramelized sugar. A sip of the hot Burnt Cinnamon Latte enhanced the rich flavors of the Kouign Amann, while the iced cafe de olla latte offered a more balanced taste between the sweet pastry and the slightly bitter cold coffee beverage. My husband got the Churro Croissant instead of the iconic LA Churro. He enjoyed the airy, slightly chewy, buttery, honeycomb-like layered croissant interior, with a crisp, flaky exterior sprinkled with sugar, as you'd find on a churro. This Mexican churro-inspired croissant paired perfectly with the café de olla latte. My brother-in-law requested the Pistachio Polvorones and Buñuelos de Viento (fried rosette cookies). Although I did get to taste a pistachio polvorón, I was impressed by its melt-in-your-mouth, delicate, and crumbly texture (much like shortbread) and buttery pistachio flavor. Its powdered sugar coating wasn't overwhelming or heavy. The use of pistachios seemed to change the flavor of these cookies, which are usually made with walnuts. The Buñuelos de Viento were airy and crisp and lightly coated with a cinnamon-sugar glaze. I didn't get to taste these rosette cookies, but I'm sure my brother-in-law enjoyed them, since both cookies had disappeared from the box within minutes of opening. Congratulations to pastry chef Ellen Ramos on opening this charming bakery-café, and I wish you continued success in the Highland Park neighborhood. I fondly hope to return for more.

I went to Santa Canela bakery to try their amazing LA churro. Very friendly service. I waited for awhile to have a fresh churro and observed that two staff be friendly and warm with everyone who came in. This while they were multitasking on several things. I watched as the churros were made. Standard but it was cool to see the process. The churro was pricey ($9) but delicious. Soft and chewy. I'd recommend a sauce to go with it. Guava sauce!!! Anyways, cool place. Plenty to do in the area. There is some outside seating.

I just wish I lived a little closer to it.

There were so many options, and everything in the display case looked fresh and tempting. The pastries I tried were really delicious -- soft, flavorful, and not overly sweet. It felt like the kind of bakery where people actually care about quality instead of just making things look pretty. The vibe inside was cozy and relaxed, which made it easy to slow down for a bit and enjoy everything. It's definitely the kind of place I'd come back to whenever I want good pastries and coffee without going somewhere overly trendy or complicated.

They're also very on-trend, whenever a Korean dessert goes viral, they usually have it here. Recently, they even started selling butter tteok, and I heard it was one of the first places to have it in K-town. I highly recommend the salted bread. Honestly, I think it's even better than the famous spot everyone talks about. My favorite is the corn cheese, it's especially delicious when it's warm. I also tried the Korean chamoe (melon) smoothie, and it was very refreshing. It tasted like they used real melon, since there was a slight natural tanginess that made it even better. There is free parking, though the lot is a bit small. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, but the seating area is somewhat limited too

I got a sausage bbang, a chocopie, and a dalgona latte. The sausage bbang was soggy on the bottom and honestly tasted like it was from the day before. The chocopie barely had any filling, just a thin layer of marshmallow and jam. It honestly felt like they used most of the marshmallow for their Dubai choco cookie because it's probably more profitable, instead of properly filling the chocopie. If that's the case, it's better not to sell it at all than serve something like that. The dalgona latte was also disappointing. With ice, the drink only filled to the bottom third line of the cup marking. Clearly, they skimped on the milk. There was also a weird moment when I paid. My total was $15.25 and I paid cash, but I was given $4.75 in change. When I said it should be $5, she seemed confused and asked what I meant. I told her I literally gave you a quarter right now, and she questioned it before eventually giving me the correct change. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a mistake. I understand times are hard, but charging more for products that clearly had corners cut doesn't sit right with me. It just comes across like there's no integrity. Clearly the quality and portions are going downhill. I wasn't even planning on writing this review. I was going to stay quiet, but the chocopie really ticked me off. I'm not going to pay for food that skims on ingredients and shortchanges customers by charging more for less, so this will be my last visit.

And I know that vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting is pretty easy to make, but sometimes I'd rather just buy baked goods than make them for myself, especially when I'm driving past what I thought was a popular (and presumably good) bake shop. I expected a high-quality cupcake. The cupcakes looked cute, but they were as dry as the Sahara. They should have been labeled as white cupcakes as I didn't detect any vanilla in them. I suspect that the "buttercream" was made with milk and margarine and powdered sugar.....so much powdered sugar. It was sickeningly sweet, and it was dry too. And a true bettercream doesn't even use powdered sugar. So not only were the cupcakes terrible, they were not even what they purported to be. This is like calling a cut of meat a filet mignon and serving a hamburger. Von's, Ralphs and Albertson's make better cupcakes than this for a fraction of othe price.
