5 stars for what it is- a local chain to get subs, garlic knots, pasta, salads , calzones, huge assortment of sizes & types of crunchy snacks, & (locally? ) made whoopie pies. Upfront, it's the subs & calzones that we go for. The calzones were so good that when we travelled back home, we were inspired to make our own. Share one for two people or get two & have one later. The subs are my really go-to. Why? Because the rolls are super fresh, as are all the veggies. Note that there is no shredded lettuce-instead they use fresh cut green peppers which I never liked but am now a convert. I also don't like Kalamata olives that many places have (acrid salt bombs), but I'm guessing that Amatos has a high-quality source. Likewise, even the tomatoes taste good even when they're not really in season. If you're looking for a pile of meat, this might not be your thing. But I like veggie subs with balance between lots of crunchy vegetables-it's always refreshing and almost medicinal imo. Skip the mayo and just get oil, salt &pepper. Also great option for humid summer days. This isn't a fancy spot, just tables & benches. Over the years I notice that Amati's has a talent for hiring very pleasant people, not matter what location you go to. Unisex bathroom are a plus imo, & parking is always fine. read more

I stopped at Amato's with an appetite after spending the day at a training workshop for work. The store was clean and the staff were very friendly. I decided to get a personal plain cheese pizza. The pizza featured a thin, crispy crust and a delicious sauce. The cheese was perfectly toasted to light brown perfection and had a pleasant, buttery taste. The personal pie was just what I needed before making the trip home. I would happily stop at Amato's again. read more

Went to Amato's for the first time for a simple quick lunch and was glad we did. I had the sausage parmigiana hot sub and it was delicious. The sausage had a fresh snap when you bit into it and a great flavor with just the right amount a fennel - a true old school Italian sweet sausage! My wife had the eggplant parmigiana hot sub and it was amazing! The flavor was the best that we've had in a long time. We'll be back and I'm getting an eggplant parmigiana dinner! read more

I always go to Amato's in Saco, but I decided to give a Biddeford location a try even though I've heard they are awful. I called in my order ahead of time because I was picking it up on the way to work. The person I placed my order with said that it would be 15 to 20 minutes. I showed up after 30 minutes, they had given my order to somebody else and said they were remaking my order. I did not have time to wait that's why I called it in ahead. The manager was unprofessional. She was complaining behind the line to the staff telling them not to stress her out. She had absolutely no customer service skills whatsoever, even YELLED at me as I was leaving saying to "give them more time with the orders." As a person who has worked in the food industry for years, I find this to be absolutely unacceptable. They need to just close this location down at this point there's not many positive reviews. read more

First! Great subs. Fresh veggies. Really impressed. Yesterday, I ordered 5 various sub sandwiches via the web at the Biddeford Amato's. I had planned to order them at the Kennebunk store to pick up on the drive home from shopping at Market Basket. I realized after I placed the order that I had chosen the Biddeford store by mistake. As I was nearby, I got there really early, and so I stood inside and watched them preparing all the orders for walk-ins, callers and the internet. I had never been to the Biddeford location. First, can I say how amazed I was at how quickly the store manager can slice tomatoes and pickles? It was impressive. I joked with someone in line that if she has kids, she can prepare lunch pretty darn fast! I think someone should video it and put it on TickTock or somewhere! It was incredible to watch. The other thing that stood out was her multitasking. She was answering the phone; dealing with a customer who wanted more toppings on her premade salad than what was on it; helping to coach a new employee (along with another employee); and, was doing it all while staying professional and friendly! She is a superstar employee, and I felt compelled to write to Amato's to tell them. I don't know her name, but her badge said manager, and she had a blonde ponytail. I have never written an email to another restaurant in my life. She was worth the time! On my way out, I told her I would hire her to do anything after watching her in action for 10-15 minutes. We owned a RV Park and Campground in NH for 15 years, and I would have loved to have had an employee like her! This is the ONLY Amatos location I get food from - primarily because the staff is friendly, the quality is always consistent, and every time we order, it's just as we asked. I am so obsessed with Amato's signature sour pickles, I buy them by the bucket! My favorites are their veggie subs (extra pickles) and veggie stuffers with marinara dipping sauce. Also worth mention is their house dressing (vinaigrette), excellent drizzled on your sandwich & we always have a bottle at home for salads & marinades. read more

Amato's is fond childhood memory. Picking up the Real Italian and heading to the beach as a kid was a summer vacation treat. The good news is the Real Italian is as good now as it was 50 years ago. Wow! I'm impressed with the speed and skill with which the preparers turn out these fine sandwiches. The onions, peppers, and tomatoes are fresh and sliced to order. The negative reviews of this location are an unfair representation of their quality, fresh prepared, and delicious sandwiches. I've been eating here for about six years. I've never had a meal I didn't love and I've never left hungry. If you've never been to an Amato's, they are worth a try. Everything is freshly prepared - and I mean that literally. Order the Italian and they will slice the tomato fresh from the ripe fruit right in front of you. I'm probably one of the most discriminating of diners, but have to say that this place is amazing. Amato's has been a tradition in my family all my life, living in Portland as a youth and then moving to Gorham as an adult. It isn't surprising that my children are big Amato's fans too. This trip I ordered a regular Italian with no onions, salt and mayo instead of oil. My wife ordered a veggie with no olives, salt or onions. Both sandwiches were delicious and ordering them ahead of time made the pick up a piece of cake. I have been to several Amato's shops all over the state and for the most part their bread is excellent and, I feel makes them stand out. The biggest difference I have noticed is the amount and quality of the veggies. It really depends on where you go. Well, my son got his stuffed Italian sandwich at the Bidderford Amato's and it was filled to capacity so I decided to head there for a sandwich for myself and my wife. Well, the sandwiches were not as stuffed as my son's was however they were very filling. I definitely will be back! Enjoy! read more

Happened to be in Biddeford to visit a friend. On our way back to Mass. we stopped so I could get an Italian to take home. Clean store, friendly staff and quick service. The Italian was DELICIOUS! I'm going to cut my rating of Amato's calzones to 3 stars. I ordered an Eggplant Parm calzone & there were more green peppers in it than anything else. I don't know why they'd put any peppers in there and I didn't really mind them, but they overpowered the eggplant and didn't taste like what I ordered. There are two other pizza places that make better calzones but what I had was okay. My mother-in-law got a small sub from them & it was surprisingly big. I will never be someone who suggests going to Amato's, but I don't mind going along if that's what other people want. read more

This Amato's has to be my favorite location, in my area. If I'm in the area, this is a pretty good go to spot for an Italian, spaghetti, pizza, or other sandwiches. It's no George's, but I love their pickles (nice and sour). They also sell a decent selection of drinks, snacks, deserts and more. I will say that I'm not a huge fan of their salads, but that's just my perspective. I'm not big on a salad with lots of lettuce. They do come with Ken's dressing They have a few tables if you'd like to eat in, but I usually take it out. I usually get fast and friendly service, and an accurate order. Decided to try their 12.99 lobster roll and I'd actually never been to an Amato's before. Interesting shop. Wasn't the cleanest place but the kitchen area looked okay. You can specify how you want the roll which is nice as some places won't alter it at all. Took awhile to get it, and the seemingly hundreds of chip flavors looked really tempting but I resisted. Got the roll and ate it later in the day. I really liked the pepper on top and it was packed with lobster. It had some shells in it though which I really hate. The manager DJ was so rude to my daughter and I. He made of feel like we were wasting his time while ordering and we were the only customers in there. Then my daughter's friend went to go pay for her salad and he told another coworker to cash her out. The coworker didn't here him and the manager yelled it at the guy then walked off and started swearing. Terrible management at this place. Got a simple spaghetti with sausage and Cesar salad. The pasta was mush and with so much sauce the pasta was swimming in the container. The sausage was rubbery and undercooked, I had to use a steak knife with force to get it to cut all the way through (the skin was so rubbery it wouldn't split). The CESAR salad had dressing on the side but wasn't Cesar dressing... it was literally an oil dressing. Was an ok salad but not a Cesar salad. Employees were pleasant. read more

Ordered lunch for the store I work at today and got a loaded chicken finger sandwich . Ordered simple instructions regarding my order due too last previous orders . Pick up the food , brought it back to my store and started my lunch . Chicken was barely cooked and I asked for loaded veggies . There was a ton of lettuce and tomatoes . That's it . . Wanted to contact the manager regarding this order and last previous orders but figured I'd share my experience on here . This Amato's is fine. Been here twice. Once got a penne pasta with chicken meal for under $5 for lunch and once got mozzarella sticks and a lobster roll. The pasta was fine. The lobster roll was fine too, even though as usual with these fast food places a bit mayonaisey. I do have a complaint about the mozz sticks; they were underdone. I mean it's just breaded cheese, so big deal and I don't expect much from a fast-food chain. See the real problem is that their ovens are on timers for their sandwiches and when you put the mozz sticks through they just get underdone. They don't deep fry them mind you, which would go quicker and taste better, they put them through the slow-a** oven. Actually, you know what, that was kinda irritating waiting for those mozz sticks. I traveled out of state for work the past 8 days and spent a lot of time going threw several airports during cold and flu season. Finally got home today, sick, jetlagged and as per usual, weary that it is difficult to budget such adventures. I just moved into the area and I frequently visited Amatos in Bangor, Maine. I usually get the Original Real Italian because they are cheap and presumably fresh. I live about 1 mile from this Alfred St location now and I wanted to get one these as I usually had in Bangor for the price and because the fresh veggies always satisfied my Chi. Picked it up and when I got home I took my sandwich out of the bag and started unwrapping it. I opened up the tape that was holding this thing together and there was a tomato right underneath the first flap that I pulled back. As I rolled the sandwich out the oil and water fountain began. With my hands soaked and slimey I continue rolling only to find another peice of tape. Hungry and nauseous and trying to stay optimistic, I break this open to find an absolute mess. It was like opening a bag of water. The bread was fully saturated as if it were dipped before wrapped. Only the onions remained inside the bread at its core but the end quarters had fully deteriorated and were unrecognizable. The tomatos we not ripe, poorly cut and inedible frankly. Completely unsatisfied. I will never order food from here again. read more

Ordered from here when I stayed at the Holiday inn in Biddeford. It took over an hour to get the food. They did say it would take a while for delivery. So I was fine with it. I ordered 2 pizzas and hot wings. The pizza was ok. The wings were the worst wings I've ever had. I think they were frozen Tyson chicken wings baked in the oven. I really could not believe they put food out like that. I will never order from this place again. Good luck keeping your business open with this kind of food. read more
