Pros- private parking lot, friendly staff, spacious- wasn't any wait to be seated and the red sauce was not out of a jar. It was the best thing they had going here. Cons- Their website lies and says they make their pasta fresh, in house, daily (see attached pic). The waitress just about laughed in my face when I tried confirming this claim. Charging $35-40 a plate for boxed pasta is criminal! That does not include any complimentary bread and butter or a side salad-nothing! $18 for kids meals, like basic spaghetti and meatball! The stuffed bread had one layer of pepperoni and cheese rolled up in it. It wasn't exactly "stuffed". My Chicken and Broccoli Romano was swimming in soup. They didn't reduce the broth mixture into a sauce at all. I've had better dishes at Applebee's, if I'm being honest. And if you want any Parmesan to top off your dish, you are getting cheese from a shaker. They do not have freshly grated. Even Olive Garden offers that! Let me tell you we have eaten here many many times with our family and our children and grandchildren even recently, within the last two weeks but, last night we ate February 15th, and it was not good. First I ordered a meal that didn't come out right and then the right one supposedly came back out, and most of the people at our table were hurt. He finished their meals, it still wasn't right, but I ate a little tiny bit of it and brought it home. I will not be eating it. My husband ordered a dish that he orders all the time was too sick to eat it here, so he brought it home. We are here now tonight the next day. He is having his meal his left overs. Let me also say we ordered the bread which we love and it was stale, no mold, but you could tell it was stale and everybody else in the party was hungry so we just joked about it and still ate it. Now back to February 16, my husband is heating up his dinner eats it and within an hour. He's in the bathroom to the point where he didn't make it to the bathroom, we will be giving this place a break for awhile. I don't know if it was they ran out of food after Valentine's Day, milk and cheese are bad. None of the regular weight staff were there that were used to seeing, things were just a mess the whole meal but if you're gonna be spending $30-$40 for dinner apiece for a pasta dish the food better be good, and if I'm paying for bread, it better be fresh. read more

I have heard about Anjon's for years, but never been. Passed by it many times, never stopped. Last Sunday we went out for dinner and wanted to go somewhere sorta special. Tried Bruno's and Oreilly's Cure, both were closed. So we headed down Route 1 and tried Anjon's. We arrived soon after they'd opened and there weren't many other diners. Our waitress was delightful. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. We got the meatballs in sauce appetizer. I had the veal marsala with linguini and my partner had the baked ziti with sausage. I also had a glass of wine and my partner had two espresso martinis. The meatballs were excellent and the red sauce was rich and flavorful. They oughta sell it in jars! (They do) I was unfortunately not impressed with my veal. It was too starchy and too sweet. My partner enjoyed her ziti and sausage a great deal (note, the sausage comes as a side portion). The drinks were fine as well. Everything felt rather overpriced, though. There was a streetside sign advertising a happy hour, but our app and our drinks were all full price. Calamari was over cooked (burned really) obviously reheated in in the microwave as was the Ciabati(sp?) bread. Salad requested no olives, came with olives. Poor service. We had a dinner here with some family members and the food and service was amazing. We had a rather large group and the order was a complicated. Some ordered gluten free, some ordered Italian dishes and of course the kids wanted their own meals of fries n chicken tenders, etc. I have to say I was impressed that all our dishes arrived as ordered and delicious.. We visited when they reopened during the summer. First of all, no one greeted us when we walked in and there were 3 staff standing there. They just looked at us and we felt like we're in the wrong place. One of them looked like the manager or the owner of the restaurant. The decor is so old and dated. It's super dark inside and just felt icky. I guess it didn't help with the marsh smell when we stepped out of our car. It just ranked. We waited a while for our waitress to come to our table. We understood that since it was obvious that they had a few large parties. When the waitress finally came, we asked about certain dishes since there are something's we're trying to avoid. For appetizers, which came about 40 min later but the rest of our main dishes didn't come until after 1.5 hours. The table next to us waited 2 hours! All our dishes included the ingredients we were trying to avoid. It was the worse experience we've ever had at any Maine restaurants. It was super pricey too, much more than restaurants in Old Port even with paid parking. I'd say we won't be coming back which is so disappointing. We had high hopes. Reservation time: 7 pm Sat down at 7:15, didn't get a drink until 8:00 The martinis and manhattans were not cold and had no olives or garnishes of any kind. We received our appetizers at 8:30. The Anjons bread was actually pretty good but the fried calamari was soggy and seemed like it was microwaved post fry. Main course came at 9:45. The Picatta had hardly any chicken and not that tasty. The Marsala was laughable. The Alfredo actually looked pretty good and tasted good. The waiter was deflective of our questions and not personable at all. We hardly ever saw him. Unclear whether they were short staffed or what the problem was. As we were leaving there were 3 or 4 staff giggling on the lobby and just hanging out. Ambiance was kind of strange. The tables have oversized LED lights on the table. We ended up putting a cloth over it to dim. Later found out from the waiter that they do in fact dim. However no body else knows this so the room is filled with these large LED lamps on everyone's table. Really bizarre experience and will never go back. We were so happy to hear Anjon's was reopening the end of last year. We used to go there often when we lived in Maine and NH. We are now snowbirds and were excited to try it out again since returning to the area for the summer. It did NOT disappoint! Same recipes, Brittney was our great server and we left full, with dinner for tomorrow, a jar of their great sauce and a loaf of the suffed bread. Everything was so good, food and service. One note if you want to make a reaervation, call them. The online google reservation do not always get thru to them. Luckily they had a table for us anyway. I can not recommend them enough! Here's my update after they have re-opened after years of being closed. 1) Food was delicious, fresh, hot. 2) Our waitress, while over-extended and very busy, was super nice and attentive. That's where it ends for us. Cons: 1) Prices are high. Kids meals are $18. Chicken parm in the mid-30s with relatively standard portions. Etc. Etc. I mention this b/c we used to dine at Anjons for years and years and the portions were always worthy of a to-go box. Other than one tiny bit for one guest, and our youngest diner, everyone finished their meals without an issue. Unusual for our crew. All of us usually bring home some of our dinner. 2) No bread offered anymore. You have to buy it for $5 and they give you a very small portion with 3 pats of butter - not enough butter for everyone to have "their own" butter. Weird, again. 3) Side salad is $10. Only one size salad. So be advised, if you buy a tossed salad & add a protein to it, you're essentially buying a $10 side salad and paying $$$ to add a protein to a side salad, rendering it a SIDE SALAD with protein. Not a meal. They just have ONE size salad. Bizarre to me. 4) Not the restaurant's fault, but just a note - we spent 1/2 hour trying to park. NOT an exaggeration. Patrons here literally are the worst at parking. Parking in the middle of 2 spots, parking too far to one side, etc. We rotated the lot for 1/2 hour with multiple other patrons. Many "illegally" parked cars just to accommodate cars. Don't park like a donkey. We were all looking forward to going back to the nostalgic Anjons and it just wasn't as great as we had hoped. read more

We've passed this restaurant hundreds of times but never stopped. We decided to finally give it a try for dinner on a Tuesday night. We were sat right away and our waitress, Brittany was attentive, got our drinks, appetizers and main course quickly. The restaurant was clean and looked like it was recently renovated. I had the baked ziti and meatball parmigiana and my wife had gluten free pasta with Alfredo sauce. Both were delicious. You could tell everything was fresh and homemade. I'm so sad to write this review. I was very excited for Anjon's to open again. Sadly, it was a huge disappointment. We started off with the stuffed bread. Cheese was congealed & the bread was not baked enough & flavorless. Our entrée was Chicken Parm. Wow, just wow. Cold, watery, chicken was not moist or flavorful. Pasta was store bought. Why not make pasta in-house??? I was shocked at how bad this dish was for $28. Ridiculous. Service was ok & the ambiance is pretty much as it has been for 20 years. Anjons muscle are the best in the area which is the very reason we frequently visit this restaurant. Their antipasto salad is unbelievably amazing loaded with fresh veggies, mozzarella wrapped with salami, marinade mushrooms, green and Mediterranean olives and the most delicious Italian dressing to complete the perfect salad. The in house made stuffed bread with a side of in house sauce is amazing. The prices are reasonable especially for the size of the portions. Showed up at 5pm on October 16, 2024, and was greeted quickly by Alyssa. We requested seating in the Bar area, as we have in the past when Anjon's was open. The service by Alyssa was excellent and well attended to. We ordered stuffed bread and Caesar salad to start, which was received promptly. My wife ordered the Lasagna with Meatballs, and I had the Veal Parmesan (which is one of my favorites). Our meals were generous and delicious. As a relatively new Mainer, I don't have a history with or memory of Anjon's from before they temporarily closed, but from the buzz and anticipation I saw in local news articles, I started getting excited about the reopening. Unless you want to go into Portland, there really aren't many year round, eat-in restaurants within a 10 minute drive of my house and even fewer that serve Italian cuisine. Anjon's fills that gap. When we first went yesterday, we showed up 15 minutes before they opened and started the queue at the door which was about 15-20 people long by the time they opened the doors. I can see why so many people were waiting and why it was worth it. If you are looking for casual, family dining with a solid, perfectly edited menu of the greatest hits of Italian favorites, this is it! The food is well cooked, delicious, and appeared consistent when I looked at other tables' orders. Their marinara is good, the pasta perfectly cooked, the meats tender and food piping hot. We ordered: chicken parmesan, veal marsala, chicken piccata, and of course the famous stuffed bread (which is basically their version of Stromboli). Everything was tasty and all of us cleaned our plates! They've been around since 1954 and you can tell: they have a good but not overwhelming amount of staples that they know how to do right. They are well run, fast, and the serving staff is SUPER friendly and welcoming. You could go here for a date night or in your jeans after running errands all day. I hope they start doing takeout soon, because we will definitely be putting them into our rotation when we don't feel like cooking. I am so sad!! I just read the news that Anjon's is up for sale! Boo! My boyfriend and I had dinner here earlier this week. I had the Chicken Cacciatore on gluten-free pasta--delicious!! My boyfriend had the Chicken Parmesan which he enjoyed. We were commenting on how this is one of the few remaining old-school places where you can get a great meal in an unpretentious setting which isn't code for "dive." I always liked the white tablecloths and dim lighting overlooking the Scarborough marsh. Their sauce- I love their homemade sauce. That's why they are closing-- to focus on their sauce business which is doing very well for them. I know some complain that this place is boring and basic, but I challenge anyone to tell me about another local Italian place that makes their own award-winning sauce from scratch. Also, so what if there are a lot of retirees here?! I'm not ageist and actually dig that. And they offer gluten-free pasta. That's big! Basically it was our non-hipster haven for good, local Italian. Fountains statues and seafood There are lots of good seafood restaurants in Southern Maine. Definitely not difficult to find lobster or other sea bugs in this part of the world. Anjon's is an attractive and pleasantly bizarre type of restaurant.. A huge fountain greets you and grabs your attention as you walk in the door. Actually the wind was blowing pretty hard so we got a refreshing shower trying to get by the fountain and in the restaurant. Kind of cool. The inside has strange little statues and murals on the wall. I guess it was kind of a pseudo Italian type of decor but it was fun to look at and trying to figure out exactly what they meant to represent. The food tended to be pricey but then seafood usually is, even in Maine. Our perky waitress said that Anjon's had the best seafood in all of Maine. A bit of an exaggeration perhaps but it was decent and filling. The service was pleasant and quick and our water glasses were filled promptly. The lobster was tender and tasty but not pre cracked like in some other restaurants. If you wanted to eat that big red bug you had to work for it. Definitely a nice restaurant for seafood if you don't mind paying a bit more than in the take out joints. I would to enjoy going back and try some of the pasta and more traditional things the next time we are in Scarborough. read more

Ate here while on vacation in Maine and we were not disappointed. The menu was a little pricy, but the food was very good and the service was quick. I ordered stuffed mushrooms and those were a bit mediocre (which is why not 5 stars), but the entree was Lobster Scampi, and I have to say it was the best scampi I've ever had that wasn't homemade. I would go there again just to order the same thing. The decor inside is cute, 2-3 steps up from an Olive Garden, and there is a pretty fountain outside that is good for taking pictures in front of. We went out to Old Orchard Beach for the day and planned on going to the Saco Drive-In at night. I stumbled upon Anjon's because there didn't seem to be a whole lot in that area and I was in the mood for Italian. We had a brief wait when we arrived and I felt a little embarrassed wearing a tank top and bathing suit because it was a fairly nice restaurant, but I'm sure they are used to that kind of thing being a tourist area, not far from the beach. I noticed that they sell their own sauce in jars so I figured it must be pretty good and had to try the Chicken Parm. The sauce really was quite noteworthy. The Italian dressing on the salad was excellent as well. Service was good and we were able to make it to the Drive-In with plenty of time. The prices are normally a little high but they had a check in offer on Yelp for $10 off which made it a great deal. If you are in that area you have to stop in. You won't regret it. read more

Very disappointing and extremely over priced! We have been to Anjon's 3 or 4 times and everyone usually loves it and we make it a point to go here when we come to Maine for vacation. However this time it was not good. First off the prices are way too high for the quality of food. One person in our party ordered the haddock marinara for $26. The whole meal was just a plate covered in marinara and a small/medium sized haddock filet sitting in the middle and it came with a baked potato on the side. No other sides or any vegetables with it. It was good, but you will be starving 20 minutes later. Another person had the sirloin surf and turf. The steak however had no seasoning or flavor. It tasted like it was just put on the grill without even salt and pepper on it. For a $30 dish you expect it to taste good. One person had the Sicilian sirloin steak which on the menu reads "finest beef cut to order". The steak was ordered medium and was well done when brought to the table. The steak had a lot of fat and it was very tough. It was not a good quality cut of meat. I had the antipasto salad which was not bad other than the fact it was drowned out in dressing. There was probably a quarter of an inch of dressing just sitting on the whole bottom of my dish. The lettuce got soggy and some of the dressing had to be drained off some of the lettuce that was on the bottom before you ate it as it was soaked in oil and vinegar. The salad itself wasn't bad, but for $17 it should be good. The shrimp prosciutto appetizer is great and I do recommend this. We order this every time we come here. The shrimp cocktail is absolutely insane to pay $5 per shrimp. It is not worth it. It is no bigger or fresher than any other place. You can get shrimp that are just as big if not bigger and fresh at other places nearby for $1.50 each. The service was not great either as we were rushed through dinner and rushed out. For a party of 8 people we were out of there within 45 minutes to an hour. The waitress kept coming to the table clearing dishes, asking if we were done with dishes and glasses etc. as some people were still eating and trying to enjoy their dinner. Overall we were extremely disappointed with the visit and after coming here for several years we probably won't be coming here anymore as it is not good quality and very overpriced and we found some other much better places in the area. For the prices of the meals you expect to have good service and quality meals. I don't know if there have been changes in ownership or management, but overall this was a huge disappointment. read more

Not good. We drove by and saw an ad for twin lobsters. Got in, ordered appetizers and wine, but when it came to a main dish and we asked for twin lobsters - they said that they were sorry and that they were running out of them tonight. Well, we were unhappy, but ordered something else. Same story to people at the next table who got in when we were just about to leave. Well, to our surprise, when we left the restaurant - the mobile standing ad was still there, giving a faulty advertisement to potential guests. Totally unacceptable. I came to anjons with 7 family members on a Saturday. The first thing to catch my eye was the high prices. I couldn't find a single entree under $22. The menu isn't creative, but I guess it's good comfort food. Mostly family style dishes. We got two orders of stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer- definitely not worth the price. $9 for three two-bite mushrooms! I suppose they can get away with this because they have barely any competition on the highway. I got the pasta al funghi with ziti which was good but for $23 I could've made an entire box of it at home. Our waitress was spectacular, though. Overall, not worth the prices. We came to visit Anjon's last week for my birthday on a recommendation from staff at our resort and family. Front of the house staff (hostesses) were very pleasant and there was no wait. The server was prompt and very pleasant and was very on top of our meal. The meal was hot and very good but nothing spectacular and seemingly overpriced. It was about 23$ for a pasta dish. The reason I took stars away is we were presented the bill and it was 72$... my husband gave the card to pay and when it returned it was 82$... when my husband inquired why the 10$ jump she said "oops, I accidentally hit a button. My husband and I have both been servers in the past for more than five years and there is no button that you can accidentally hit to add a flat 10$. Yeah right! We both think she added gratuity and hoped we didn't notice. Not cool! Tourists but not stupid! read more
