Another late review here, whoops. Can I tell ya'all how stoked I was to walk around Serramonte Mall and find AMAUSAAN UJI MATCHA? Just the mention of "matcha" and I am there, so even before I approached the store to peruse the menu, I knew that I had to go there and try something. Not just an ice cream parlour, AMAUSAAN UJI MATCHA is a matcha specialty sweet shoppe that specializes in a range of matcha-based desserts, including lattes, soft serve, and traditional Japanese desserts. This location of the Japanese dessert café was uber kawaii ("cute" in Japanese) in décor with a kimono-dressed white rabbit standing beneath lit lanterns, welcoming guests at the entrance. Pink walls and faux cherry blossom trees created a serene atmosphere, inviting patrons to savour their treats in a tranquil setting reminiscent of a cherry blossom festival in Japan. I did my research - AMAUSAAN UJI MATCHA is a tea brand that offers Uji matcha, regarded as the highest grade of matcha in Japan, sourced from the renowned Amausaan farm. This store's menu featured a delightful selection of cones, parfaits, cakes, smoothies, sodas and more, most of which were infused with the rich and vibrant flavour of matcha. Below are some items that we ordered: K2 Uji Matcha Latte with Matcha Soft Serve & K1 Royal Uji Matcha with Matcha Ice Cream Ball - For a more pronounced matcha taste, it was worth paying extra for the floats of a swirl of soft serve and a scoop of ice cream. B1 Double Matcha - V ordered this creamy soft serve infused with high-quality Uji matcha, served in a cone. Despite the silky and smooth texture, V was meh over the flavour. L1 Ice Royal Uji Matcha & L2 Ice Matcha Latte - Unlike K1 & K2, these yummy FLOATS were automatically served with matcha soft serve toppings. Both offered perfect balances of sweetness and bitterness with each sip. E1 Inari Chidori Matcha Mille Crepes - I was excited to dive into the 18 layered delicate sheets of sweet crêpes, separated by even airier layers of light matcha-flavoured whipped cream, topped with a dust of green matcha powder. I really wanted to like this location because it is SADLY the only Amausaan Uji Matcha left in the Bay Area which is so unfortunate. Because who doesn't love a super cute themed Japanese dessert place? I guess with the location being in the mall, the lack of staff, ingredients or what not, the entire parfait section of the menu wasn't available and I can only order a drink to go and it was served in a to go cup instead. Just tasted like a standard sweet matcha milk with some matcha ice cubes. The interior was cute, but that was it. A good part of going to a place like this is to enjoy the presentation and atmosphere, so it killed a bit of the vibe. The vibe here did not disappoint! I love that there was a kiosks with pictures to show exactly what your options are, not just worded descriptions. The service was quick and nice, food was great. But the vibes here were everything for a girls matcha and yap session! Definitely recommend this spot, there's also other options besides matcha btw, especially if you love Asian goodies. So hard to find good matcha!!! And this stop is not it, unfortunately. It's got a great seating area to hang out with friends or rest break during shopping but the drinks and food are at best average. We had the strawberry matcha latte special this trip and it was below average - not worth the calories or caffeine space. Matcha itself was fine but didn't balance well with the milk or strawberry jam, which was too sweet and thick. Service was fine and drink seemed to be made with care, just not a great recipe on flavor. Skip it and drive to a better place. read more

I've passed this place a few times and finally tried it. The ambiance is inviting and definitely a spot where you can chill out catch up with friends. You can even take a picture in front with the bunny. I had the matcha soft serve taiyaki. The cone was chewy and delicious. Not fresh made like other places but it was delicious and went well with the soft serve matcha. I also had the iced matcha latte the worker recommended. It was a rich, creamy, and earthy flavor. What an Exquisite Matcha Haven at Serramonte Mall! I was surprised to find this spot in the middle of the mall, but then again Serramonte mall has changed significantly. The boba drinks at Amausaan Uji were surprisingly very good. Each sip was a reminder of my visit to Japan. The drinks were made perfectly with the right amount of sweetness, and chewy boba pearls. At both Amaussan Uji Matcha and Matcha Cafe Maiko they offer soft serve, but some how I prefer Matcha Cafe Maiko instead because their soft serve is more creamier. We got the Ube Soft Serve with a cone and the Matcha Soft Serve with a cone and a slice of the Strawberry Mille Crêpe Cake which in my honest opinion was the highlight of it all. The cake was definitely delicious though, it wasn't too sweet but it had just the right amount of sweetness to it. The matcha flavor in the Matcha Soft Serve was super strong with a tad bit of bitterness and the Ube Soft Serve was just your typical ube flavor nothing too big of a wow with that. I'm a sucker for matcha, so I happily ordered a soft serve parfait (A6 on their menu). I was looking forward to the little rice balls pictured on the menu but mine didn't have any at all... I got there right when they opened and there was only one employee having to make three different orders. Maybe he just forgot the rice balls in my order due to stress? They had just opened though so idk. My matcha parfait was like f i n e but not so impressive that I would make the effort to get it again. What a perfect treat, not overly sweet or super filling. We asked the staff what they recommended and they said to try either the parfait or the original taiyaki with the mix of milk tea and matcha. So glad we listened! The milk tea was on the sweeter side but mixed with the earthy matcha flavor it made for a perfect blend. The texture of the taiayki cone was a bit mochi like and made for a delicious bite. Not to mention the interior of the shop is simply too cute, decorated with bunnies and beautiful wall art it makes for a cozy cafe vibes. (I really wanted to love this place...) I had such high hopes for Amausaan Uji Matcha when I first discovered it. As a huge fan of matcha soft serve, I was excited to have a shop so close to home. Unfortunately, after many visits, I've finally decided to take a break. To start, their matcha soft serve is consistently icy rather than creamy, which is a big disappointment for me. Creaminess is a key part of what I enjoy in soft serve, and it's just not there. On top of that, their best flavor--Milk Tea--was discontinued after a few visits. It was the one flavor that was consistently good, and its absence has been sorely felt. On my last visit, I decided to try the Hojicha Latte, hoping for redemption. Sadly, it was far too sugary and packed with caffeine--I couldn't fall asleep until well after midnight, which was over 12 hours after having the drink at lunchtime! That said, I do have to give credit where it's due: the ambiance is fantastic. They've created a very cute, welcoming seating area that's perfect for enjoying your treat--if only the matcha lived up to the setting. Despite my frustrations, I'm not giving up entirely. The concept and location are just too spot-on for me to abandon them completely. I'll keep an eye on what future Yelpers write and hope that the quality improves. The storefront is cute and all-pink, looking like a Japanese-themed outdoor food stall! If you've been to the Westfield mall in San Francisco, its storefront looks just like the Pinkpinke boba shop. Came here with my sister to grab some drinks, and their line was way shorter than the nearby Happy Lemon. I ordered the Royal Uji Matcha, while my sister ordered the Uji Matcha Latte. The cashier explained that the Royal Uji Matcha was a water-based drink that has stronger matcha flavor, while the Uji Matcha Latte was milk-based and should be creamier. However, the Royal Uji drink was super watered down with not much matcha flavor, while the Uji Matcha latte was mainly milk with a hint of matcha. At least there weren't any matcha chunks, but it was super lacking in matcha flavor, which was surprising since the drinks were a good deep green. My mother got the Matcha Hojicha Latte, which had a light hojicha flavor but barely any matcha. This drink was pretty watered down as well. If you are looking for a strong matcha taste in their soft serve, latte, or float, go elsewhere. (In fact I recommend Matcha Cafe Maiko instead as the quality of their matcha is far superior imo.) Unfortunately Amausaan's matcha is subpar, and their soft serve is sweeter, weak on matcha, and not as smooth and leans more towards the icier side compared to other places. The matcha latte is also pre-sweetened so you cannot choose your sugar level. Whenever I'm at Serramonte, I always have to come here for their soft serve. I've tried other things on the menu before, but it felt lack luster to me. The matcha lattes are ok, not too much of a matcha taste. I've also tried the crepe cakes they have there and they're super small for the price you pay for.... (totally not worth it in my opinion).. and the lychee rose water? Don't get me started on that. Looks aesthetically pleasing, but I didn't like the taste of it. Ok- now what's the positive in this review? What keeps me coming back is their Milk Tea Soft Serve Taiyaki. If you love milk tea and ice cream together, you'll absolutely love this. This is located on the Old Navy Wing (where forever 21 used to be) and there's hardly any lines here from when I went. They accept card and cash I believe, but probably due to COVID, card is better. The soft serve itself is so creamy, the milk tea flavor isn't overwhelming but it isn't subtle either. It's almost like drinking the real thing where it's not overly sweet at all. There's a great balance between tea flavor, sweet and bitterness in the soft serve. There's no nasty after taste either. It's honestly my favorite thing on the entire menu. The Taiyaki cone itself doesn't come with any fillings (UJI time allows you to get a filling of red bean or Nutella), but I absolutely love how crispy and chewy the cone is. It's almost mochi like??? I can probably eat 10 of these soft serves in a sitting. Highly recommend trying the soft serves out! read more

I've actually been here several times and each time I've been thrilled that they're here. I'm a huge fan of their matcha anything! I like their matcha softserve floats both the L1 which is straight up pure matcha and softserve matcha on top as well as the L2 which is the same as the L1 but with milk added to make it a little less bitter. They also have a good selection of matcha ice cream drinks which is similar to the above drinks but with a scoop of matcha ice cream instead. Also good, but I prefer the softserve because it's easier to stir in and doesn't take forever to melt. They always seem to be out of the strawberry fish pastry, so I really want to try that if they ever have it. I also like their cubed matcha drink and their matcha mille cake. Excellent service, especially last time when work called me and I was picking up my drink, the woman was very gracious and gave me a bag and I kept on whispering "thank you," because I didn't want to seem like another jerk on the phone but I could hang up because it was my boss. As a matcha lover, I really wanted to check this spot out after passing it a couple of times in the mall. The decor of this place is sooo adorable! They have a ton of matcha items to choose from depending on what you're craving from crepe cakes, soft serve, and drinks. I ordered the Ishita Shiratama Matcha Story ($9.90) which had a small serving of matcha soft serve, glutinous balls, red bean, whipped cream, egg pudding, and bits of charcoal waffle cone. My favorite part of the soft serve was the rich matcha flavor, but everything else in the dessert was very mediocre. The glutinous balls were rock hard so I'd avoid them next time. Overall, it was quite pricey for the size given. This spot is definitely great to get your matcha fix, once in a while. They have several locations around the Bay (Berkeley, Newark, Union City, SF, Daly City, Burlingame) and each location has a different set of decor. After living in Hawaii and traveling to Japan, I have an intense matcha love and generally all things Japanese. While I was in the area for some ramen, I stopped by this place for some matcha soft serve and was glad I did. It was only their second day open, and that was apparent. I placed my order for the matcha taiyaki cone with matcha soft serve and mochi ball on top. My order was the only one they were working on, and it took them over 15 minutes to figure it out. Once it was to me however, it was pretty good. The cone was really chewy whereas I prefer more crispy, but the soft serve flavor wasn't too sweet which I appreciate. The texture of the soft serve was very icy however and not creamy which was probably more of a mixing issue with their machine, and I anticipate they will fix that. Prices were high but that's basically everywhere you get real matcha items because actual matcha isn't cheap. Hubby said "it was good, but was it $7 for one tiny soft serve cone good?" Ok, I agree, it was a bit steep... The people behind the counter, although super uncoordinated with the orders, were really nice and friendly. The decor is adorable, with the bright pink theme and the giant bunny greeting you adjacent to the sakura tree. T1 Matcha Soft Serve with Taiyaki ($6.90): The employees were definitely struggling with the taiyaki, I believe they were having trouble with the machine as it took about 30 min to get our order and you can see them scrambling in the back redoing some orders. When we got the taiyaki the ice cream melted within 10 seconds, and it was leaking out the end of the taiyaki so it just got everywhere. It was a very messy experience eating it. I think some technical issues popped up with the taiyaki itself. The Matcha soft serve was ok itself. Had some Matcha flavors but it tasted a bit diluted. I had the one at the other location in Berkeley and the ice cream was more solid and not as liquidy. .:: Ambiance/ Service/ Parking ::. The store is located across from Zales Jewlery Store next to Vans. You cant miss it with the bright pink lanterns and cute bunny display. The store itself was pretty small with no seating (unsure if due to COVID or its more of a take out place). Not much room, but the wall had art all along. Awww!! it's like love at first bite! And yes, this place is pink, so it earns an extra star! I came here today, because wanted to avoid the crowds on weekends. They are located near the center of the mall (the side that used to face JCPenney), it should be easy to spot if they didn't board up the center of the mall. I was glad that there was only two ppl ahead of me. The menu board changes a little to fast, so if you want to see what they sell, you can look at the menu on the counter instead. They have some pretty cool flavors, and more variety than that of Matcha Cafe Maiko. Normally, Matcha cafe maiko, will be empty in the center, so I feel i get ripped off. Here at Amausaan, they have matcha, milk tea, black tea, chocolate, and soy flavors if you are interested in their soft serve. The signature ones, has the the matcha with vanilla and red bean. You can have it on a waffle cone or black cone or even in a Taiyaki, which is like a fish shaped waffle cone. For the taiyaki, they had the Matcha, chocolate or strawberry flavors for you to choose from. They also have some mousse and crepe cakes sold to-go as well. I ended up getting the milk tea and matcha mix with the regular waffle cone and it was amazing! The tea flavor was just perfect! I love strong tea flavor ice creams, and this mix if you love teas! I've chosen to get it in a cup instead because it was getting everywhere lol. I also have had the match lattes and the Okinawa Whales sea coconut milk. It had tapioca Pearl's in it and was so yummy. I love coconut milk and this one was refreshing. The service is ok sometimes well get people who are nice and others who dont look as friendly. I decided to wait. Week after serramonte mall to open to go back indoors. And I was so happy to reward myself on Friday to a matcha drink. When I arrived I was so attracted to the decorations with pink, Japanese tree and colors. It was nice and bright. I was glad I came in to try it out. I decided to try the matcha drink with red bean and aloe topping and it was really refreshing. I asked for no ice and no ice cream. The red bean was made perfectly, it was chewy and soft. But not to soft that it would be mushy or a pile of gup at the bottom of the cup. I then got another matcha brink with red bean and match ice cream on top. The matcha is really nice and refreshing and its not overly sweet. I ordered the (E1) matcha mille crepe cake and the (E9) strawberry crepe cake to go. They both are delicious. The matcha is evenly mixed which made the cake super nice. That you don't get chunks of matcha powder in one bite. The strawberry cake is nicely decorated with a drizzle of matcha and little bites of strawberry. Like candy bites. They also offer smoothies, latte, ice cream cones, taiyaki with soft serve. I really like how the have different flavor options for the taiyaki cones. You can choose between original, Matcha, chocolate, and strawberry. The taiyaki is made fresh and super warm and nice with soft serve. But I was bust taking pictures if the decorations and it melted. But I was able to get a couple bites before everything melted. I decided to try the matcha and black tea soft serve in a match taiyaki cone. All I would say is its worth a try. The staff members are really nice and helpful. They greet you and call your number a couple times when order is ready for pickup. read more

11/8/2020 Quarantine Day 237 I was initially really excited that Amausaan Uji Matcha was opening up a spot in Serramonte mall because I love matcha! The exterior decor and bright lights are very cute and inviting. There was a small line when my boyfriend and I arrived. When it was our turn to order, I was somewhat disappointed that we could not get the matcha crepe cake since they were sold out. Here is what we got instead: 1. Chocolate crepe cake (share) 2. Okinawa whale's sea coconut milk (share) The drink was delicious and the colors are very eye catching. You can definitely taste that yummy coconut milk throughout the whole drink. The chocolate crepe cake though was a total let down. The "cake" was only a slice which cost $10.90; I was expecting a whole cake to bring home to share with my family. What I got instead was a sad, little brown slice of bland chocolate crepe cake. So if I did come back, I will try out maybe the taiyaki, matcha and ice cream related items. Honestly though $10.90 for just one slice of cake is not worth it to me. Being a baker myself, I know that making a crepe cake takes a lot of time but I can get a whole cake from another establishment for that same price. read more
