Tucked away in the corner of a little shopping center, Ichika is a relatively small hidden restaurant. Due to the size, I've seen a line before, but thankfully the wait was only 15 min. Plenty of classic and special rolls. I got the famous treasure box to share which included a healthy variety of sashimi cuts, nigiris, oysters, roe and skewers and changes based on chef's choice. Each pairing in the deluxe box was seasoned and prepared perfectly with the nigiris lightly lined with wasabi and the right amount of rice. We also ordered a Sapporo pitcher which paired well with the takoyaki, middle toro, uni nigiri, and steamed egg. Convenient if you're looking for a good quality sushi spot outside of the city that has plenty of parking. read more

I live in the neighborhood and finally had a chance to check out this spot. At first it looks like they are closed because the windows are so tinted so make sure you pull the door to confirm. We almost left but thankfully the waitress came and opened the door for us. We ordered mix tempura, chicken gyoza and chicken karaage for our starters. All was delicious! Felt the karaage could have had a little bit more seasoning but that's just me. They had big chunks of meat fried perfectly. I forgot what rolls we got but both were pretty good. Came in on a weekday evening, though this casual restaurant was busy, we were able to get seated right away. The first server was very nice. The other servers throughout the meal were cordial. There were so many choices on the menu that we wanted to try. We went with: the chicken katsu curry (very flavorful and delicious), black code miso yaki (very good though a bit small portion), hamachi sashimi (very fresh and smooth), mixed tempura (the coating was light and crunchy), the double toro roll (so good, fresh, a new fave), the takoyaki (another fave! So much flavor and texture in that small bite), and the spider roll (unfortunately, one of our least enjoyable item of the night. It was bland, seemed like the unagi sauce was missing). Stopped by here for a friend to celebrate their birthday, had a reservation at 7:45, and ended up a few minutes late, but it wasn't too packed so we were able to get seats relatively quickly. I had been meaning to come here for a while, but never had the chance so I was pretty excited to try the place out. The place is cozy, there are tables on one side and a sorta of deeper table on the other where you sort of sit into the seat, a bit different than sitting at a table, but adds to a more intimate experience. I had a quick beer before my friend showed up, and it was indeed refreshing. I looked over the menu and instantly saw the treasure box, which I've seen on the Yelp page, and we both ordered that. We didn't ask for the item menus, as my friend had been here multiple times and just told me to dig in. I started with the monk fish liver, and wow oh wow, I'm not a fan of liver at all, but the way they cooked this was fab-u-lous! The steamed egg following it was refreshing, and then just eating each piece of sashimi and sushi was amazing. Every item tasted super fresh and had the right amount of flavor, so I didn't need to add anything extra. Loved the tempura! It was super light and crunchy. It was not greasy at all and came out piping fresh. The rolls were also solid. The Ichika roll stood out to me the most. It definitely had a kick to it. The warriors roll was good, but the flavor was not memorable. The eel avocado roll was good for a basic roll. I like that they have a thick fish to rice ratio. We've been here so many times with friends and for date night - consistently a solid choice from the food to the service. One of the items we always get is the treasure box. Out of all the treasure boxes I've had, this is the best. It's a mix of deluxe items such as the oysters, chawanmush (our baby loved this), skewers, sashimi and nigiris. Truly a great value. I highly recommend this spot for fresh sushi and fantastic, friendly service. I've been here twice now, and both times the sushi rolls came out beautifully presented and tasted even better. If you come around 8pm, you likely won't have to wait long since the dinner rush tends to slow down by then. Some of the best seats are near the entrance where you can watch the sushi chefs preparing the food. When we arrived, the staff brought complimentary edamame for the table while we looked over the menu. I appreciate when edamame isn't overloaded with salt, and they did a great job keeping it simple and flavorful. I love spicy food, so my friend and I split the spicy tuna roll, the hot girl roll, and the baked scallop roll. Each one was delicious, but the hot girl roll was my favorite. It's topped with spicy tuna and jalapeños and had the perfect kick. The baked scallop roll came out hot and gooey, covered in a sweet garlic sauce that paired really well with the scallops. The restaurant is also vegetarian-friendly, which is one of the reasons we chose it. My partner ordered the avocado maki, veggie dragon roll, and the futo maki. His favorite was the veggie dragon roll, which includes avocado and eggplant. The futo maki wasn't as much of a hit for him, but that may just be because he's not a big fan of radish. Located in this sleepy once-modern mini mall in Brisbane is a hidden gem for Japanese food seemingly known only by locals. It's definitely a popular spot on the weekends as we had to wait a bit each time before a table became free for us. There's a bit of outdoor seating, but hey.. Brisbane gets cold and foggy at night, but if you have a four legged friend with you, that's the proper way to go.. We come here as a party of six a couple of times now. The service and food quality was consistently good with attentive friendly prompt service both times. Busy sushi counter with three sushi chefs slicing and dicing away! Highlights here for me were the big thick super fresh pieces of sushi (Toro, Salmon and Albacore), and the Tonkatsu Pork Curry Rice. Though the menu seems vast, I didn't really encounter anything that I didn't enjoy. The Dragon and "Heart Attack" rolls were perfect. Everything was just on point or better. Well... wait.. I didn't think the Sushi Tacos were that great, as they were unexpectedly spicy and fall apart rather easily. Eh.. I'll master that maybe next time. Lots of angled parking out in front. The ambiance here is very nice and I have enjoyed most of the dishes I have tried. Recently I came for a friend's birthday dinner and ordered the beef curry, which unfortunately was not my favorite. There was much more sauce than beef and the meat was extremely chewy and not cut into smaller, easy to eat pieces. It made the dish a bit tedious to eat and overall it was too salty for my taste. I should have gone with the chicken katsu instead. I did try it and it pairs much better flavor wise with the rest of the menu and it is also properly cut. The ribs are good, although they are not very filling since there is more bone than meat. The assorted tempura is a great appetizer and definitely something I would order again. The atmosphere is beautiful and very elegant. We were lucky this time and were seated in the back area of the restaurant with regular chairs. Service was quick, got ice water and edamame immediately after sitting down, and when my friend arrived, they brought out miso soup right away. Nice touch. Food wise, the sushi quality really stood out. The shimaji and kimedai had great texture and no fishy taste at all. They were already brushed with a slightly sweet soy sauce and had wasabi inside, so no extra dipping needed. The beef ribs were flavorful and tender, and the soft shell crab was perfectly crispy. Amaebi and salmon rolls were just okay compared to everything else. The only downside was the atmosphere. The sushi chefs were speaking quite loudly, and we could clearly hear them using inappropriate language multiple times in Chinese, which made the dining experience uncomfortable. The service was amazing. The staff was very accommodating. We had a birthday and they kindly offered a few free mochi icecream with a candle. There were two rooms in this restaurant. One side had what I thought was tatami mat seating, but it turned out to be a table inside of a raised floor. You were sitting like you normally would at a table but the seat was the entire floor if that makes sense. It's not actually tatami seating. We ordered a 10 piece salmon sashimi, rainbow roll, double salmon roll, and the dragon roll. The sashimi was delicious - no fishiness at all. They cut some of the pieces too thin, so they gave us an extra piece to make up for it! All the sushi was as expected and tasted great, the only problem was with the rice on the rolls. The taste and texture were fine, but I'd say they only put half the rice that would usually be on a sushi roll. I've order take out before and it was never like that, so this might have been a fluke. The crispy shrimp head was a nice touch, it made for a refreshing bite from the fish. The shrimp itself was creamy but not super sweet. While the uni was pretty solid in flavor, salty cream and fresh. The uni wasn't in the best solid texture but it still made for good eating. The sushi rice was perfection, seasoned just enough to have that subtle vinegary taste without taking away from fish. I would love to come back and try the omakase next time! We sat in the cute Japanese-style seating area (which the padding on these seats are a bit thin so just to be aware of), but they also offer traditional tables, a sushi bar, and what appeared to be a semi-outdoor patio with heat lamps. Every year a few Oracle alumni friends and I get together for sushi. For years that meant Sushi Sam's, and since it closed, we've been rotating through new spots in the area. I searched Yelp for sushi near San Mateo and landed on Ichika in Brisbane -- a town I'd never actually been to, but have driven by many times. On the outside, it is in a strip mall. On the inside, it has that classic sushi-bar feel: dark wood, understated, comfortable. Service was good but could be more attentive. I ordered the Omakase 10 Pieces Nigiri ($58), and it was far better than expected. My benchmark for great sushi is simple: I take a bite and immediately think, "This is the best piece of ___ I've ever had." Ichika delivered that feeling more than once. The texture was spot on, each piece perfectly balanced and pre-seasoned... no soy sauce or wasabi needed. Just clean, precise execution and excellent fish. Okoze in San Francisco is still my personal favorite, but Ichika is outstanding in its own right. If you're in the area, especially before or after an airport run, it's worth a stop. This is my favorite sushi place in the entire world. They have such a variety of yummy rolls and appetizers. This time we got the veggie dumplings and a couple of different sushi rolls. They also give this really yummy house warm tea before your meals. We were still a little hungry so we ordered an extra tempura roll, which was so yummy. I went on Wednesday 1/26/22 @ 1830. It was a full house and ended up waiting 15 minutes outside for a table inside. I spent $135 for fish tacos ($15.50), charashi bowl and the toro bowl.
