We received awful service. We sat at our table for about 10 minutes before someone even acknowledged us!!! ...it wasn't even busy...Everyone in that place seemed unhappy and unpleasant. Walked in yesterday to have a couple beers (after snowmobiling to copper harbor). Sat down at end of bar, 3 to 4 workers never even acknowledged us. Well, I have not written a review in a while, but feel I should let people know. This place is very average. The pizza is not good, it comes on cardboard oven cutouts, what does that tell you. Def NOT home made Looked at reviews between this and the Library restaurant and it's really hard to get a proper read anymore. For ex: most recent review (5star)on Ambassador was 2 mo old when more recent 1 month older/lousier reviews where further down? It's becoming a shell game. I am not a pizza snob, but I know when it comes in a box vs fresh and home made and this is mass produced. Was it bad? No. But it was not good either. This restaurant has a menu full of burgers and sandwiches, but the best reason to eat here is the pizza menu. You can build your own or choose from one of the specialty pizzas. I recommend the specialty menu, specifically the tostada pizza. All of the pizzas are thin crust and the tostada is covered in taco seasoned hamburger, lettuce, cheese and red enchilada sauce. It's absolutely delicious. The chicken and broccoli pizza is also very good, as well as the Greek pizza. The sandwiches are all pretty good, but the pizzas are the very best part of the menu in my opinion. It's my favorite pizza in Houghton actually. Service is always friendly and quick. This is a must try restaurant in the Houghton/Hancock area. read more

Ambass has been a favorite for years. Was up there for a week and stopped in on a Saturday night. We had a big group and were seated accordingly. I think the fish bowls are not what they used to be, and the prices have become a reflection of the popularity of the place. Food was still very good as was the table service. The disappointment of the night was the "big guy" behind the bar (owner?) didn't seem to care. He hardly knew we were there. I hear pizza works up the street is good. read more

Was just up for a visit, and The Tostada Pizza is exactly as it was when I left 6 years ago...FANTASTIC! If you bring leftover Tostada Pizza home, everyone is suddenly your friend...! Every sandwich I ever had there in the past was great too. I like the Reubens, Rachels (Reuben with roast beef instead of corned beef) and Roast Beef Au Jus in particular. Looking at other reviews, I wonder how people can't get things even close to correct: The Fishbowls are over 20 oz. drinks for $7.75, NOT 14 oz., a better deal than ANY drink here in Florida where it's 6 bucks for a plain old Jack 'n' Coke half the size. If ya wanna do the true Yooper /MTU thing, try racing your friends to suck down an entire Fishbowl (Scorpions are my Fave) as fast as you can thru 2 straws for a good northern "Brain Freeze", and have someone drive ya home if you have more than one. Also, the Ambassador's Tostada Pizza is known far and wide, and everyone that returns there for a visit wants one, so don't insult it by calling it a "taco pizza" like cheap-ass restaurants serve. The Ambassador's reputation is well-deserved because the quality of their food has remained high for generations of Yoopers and Michigan Tech students alike. If you visit Houghton, MI you need to make time for at least one stop at the Ambassador. If you make The Ambassador your very first stop for dining out, I predict you'll be back again before you leave. read more

Greek pizza was excellent, good service, outdoor deck looks like it would be nice once weather gets better

As a Michigan Tech alumni, I spent many long hours at the Ambo eating pizza and drinking some intoxicating fishbowls. As its a place with a lot of great memories I have a hard time saying anything against it, however, times have changed. They still have the wonderful pizzas I love - Tostada, Chicken and Broc, and Lobster- they still have the amazing Salsa and Chips!! But where things have really taken a downfall is their once amazing fishbowls :( It used to be just one fishbowl was enough to get your night up and running.. now, they barely put a shot or two for the entire fishbowl and the price has gone up. I will keep my fingers crossed that the fishbowls will go back to the epic ones that I remember years ago but I will definitely still make it out for the wonderful pizza and charming atmosphere.... One tip, if its Winter Carnival, dont expect to get a table during dinner hour because this place with its tiny tables and booths will fill up fast! read more

We had dinner here on our vacation. The restaurant is very beautiful being in a very historic 100 year old building. The service was good and the pizza was excellent. They only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is because of the long wait time. We came here the night before and left because there was a 30-40 minute wait for a table and were told it take 40 minutes for food once we were seated. This time we waited 20 minutes for a table and as were seated we were told it would take 40 minutes for our food. It took 45 minutes.the food and service is very good but be prepared for a very long wait during peak times. read more

Prices have gone up while quality has gone down. In 2013 we came and had some great pizza because my husband grew up in the area and raved about it from years gone by. Today's experience brought us a burnt tostada pizza and some mediocre spaghetti. Hubby said his tea tasted funny. Was going to get a sandwich but no chips or fries on the menu...at all. The Ambassador came highly recommended and so we have tried it several times. The pizza is good. That's it. Folks now tell us that it 'used' to be better and that makes one wonder what has changed. The pizza selection is definitely unique but they often turn out to be bland and flavorless. This part of the Upper Peninsula was settled by Scandinavians and Welsh and perhaps folks here just prefer bland, flavorless foods. The service was good and the building is amazing but you go out to eat for the food, not the building and the service should be good everywhere. We will try it again and hope for better. read more

I will caveat this by saying it was Saturday on Memorial Day weekend. So, I can understand that the restaurant was busy and there was a wait. After waiting for a table, we were sat. After we sat down, we waited and waited for a waitress to acknowledge us. Two waitresses were waiting on tables near us. They passed us four or five times and clearly saw us. But never acknowledged us. Never came over to even take our drink order. And there were three or four other waitresses milling about the bar talking to each other or flirting with the bartender. I finally had to call one of them over and ask her to serve us. There was a manager milling around, but not doing much of anything other than trying to be sure people were seated. He should have gone over to the waitresses chit chatting at the bar and told them to do their work and serve customers. No wonder the place was backed up in terms of getting people out the door so new customers could get in. Once our waitress started serving us she was good. But, we did order two beers and she forgot the second one until after we had finished our meal and were about to ask for the check. Also, while we were waiting for our pizza, the manager asked us to move from our table to another table so he could put our table and another table together to accommodate a large group. He should have at least given us a free drink for our willingness to do this. And when we were finally done our meal and got our check, our receipts were the merchant copy. There was no spot to even sign. Our waitress had to go back and get the customer copy for us to sign. Like I said, I know it was a busy time being a holiday and a Saturday, but that is when service needs to be at the best, not the worst. I recommend going to the Library instead. Whenever we are in the area (we love the Keewenaw in the U.P.), we stop by the Ambassador and for over 30 years have been eating here and it never disappoints. The salad and homemade tangy French dressing ranks as one of my favorites (and have dined in Europe and all over the US). Their Yorkshire beef sandwich is excellent; if you like French dips, it will rank up there as a top taste experience. I also love the effciency in service even when it is busy. The fish bowl drnks are also excellent. The spaghetti, pizza, and subs are also tasty. My husband really enjoys their "famous" tostada pizza. The atmosphere is old world pub style, cozy, classic, comfortable. I hope this place will remain just the way it is; change nothing! If you are traveling to the area for the first time, stop by and you will experience U.P. hospitality and simply good food. We stopped in for lunch on our way up to Copper Harbor and were delighted by the Ambassador. We loved the gnome murals, the friendly service and yes, the tostada pizza. Tostada pizza is basically a taco salad on a pizza crust and it's the perfect combination of cold crisp lettuce (iceberg, natch), warm taco meat, melty cheese and piquant salsa. Loved it. Also, it must be shared that no tostada pizza is complete without Keweenaw Brewing Company beer. I like the Widowmaker (dark stout), but there are plenty of other choices, too. read more

Good food, fun environment! The walls are iconic, as they have murals painted on them. The fishbowls are a great size and well priced. The pizzas are delicious and its a great place to go with a group. Sometimes the service can be a tad slow. There is a beautiful view of the Lift Bridge from the restaurant though! read more
