This is the worst restaurant I have eaten at in the Houghton/ Hancock area. Describing the food as mediocre would actually be a complement. The overall quality of the food was a joke and worst then frozen food. I missed happy hour by literally less than 1 full minute. I ordered before 6pm but the server did not ring it up until 6:00pm exactly. I asked if this was why the appetizers were not half off and she responded, "Uh, I guess... the computer cuts it off at 6pm." A manager could have easily corrected this. Also the server had way too many tables. I could see her running back and forth between each side of the restaurant. She brought us one knife and only one side plate to share between two people. Pizza: I ordered a 10" pizza. It was worst than one I could buy at Walmart. It was served on cardboard instead of a metal plate. It was cut in small squares for some reason like a brownie. I was really in the mood to have a slice of pizza, not a cube. The crust tasted like cardboard. The pizza itself was very bland. I took the rest home, but honestly I probably won't eat it. The price of a small pizza was really high at $13 for being such bad quality. I could have gone to Domino's for better pizza at a lower price. Lobster pasta: Noting special. Imitation fishy tasting lobster over cheap spaghetti. "Nachos": This may be the worst "nachos" I have ever ordered. It was a basket full of off brand yellow rounds, and served with a side of cheese sauce. The jalapenos were huge slices too big to eat, and the salsa had way way too much garlic. Order of garlic bread: I've eaten better frozen garlic bread baked in the oven at home. The side of pizza sauce was way too sweet and full of sugar. The lobster pasta also came with garlic bread. A savvy server would probably have warned us that we were already getting garlic bread. We also got charged for something we didn't ordered. The KBC was decent, but again, since we missed happy happy by less than one minute we did not get the discount. If you love overpriced carbs, this place may be great for you. The restaurant was pretty full with locals and tourists. I won't be going back though. read more

Classic old college town bar. We were there on move in weekend. 40 minutes for a table and an hour for food. They were short staffed but very up front about the wait. We didn't mind. Very cool interior. Server was attentive. Food was average but it fit the place in a good way. Prices are reasonable so it's a good value. The Ambassador is a fantastic place. Everything from the food to the decor to the sound is a unique experience. It's got large windows with a view of the Portage Canal and the Houghton-Hancock lift bridge (the heaviest in the world - whatever that means). The ambiance is cozy, good for a couple or a group of 12. The buffalo wings are a must. Seriously, I swear by it. The best I've had my entire life. It takes 15 minutes after you order it, and it's well worth the wait. It doesn't have - or need - any nonsense bbq or hot sauce. It's that good. The garlic-chicken-broccoli pizza is terrific, the taco pizza is one-of-a-kind good, and its signature dish, the lasagna, is rich and juicy. Sandwiches are really good as well. I like that the sub crust is lightly toasted. Crunchy. Ah, the fishbowls. Don't leave without having one, but be sure you either have a designated driver or stay at the hotel across the street, 'cos you'll want another one. And another... Good times. Service is prompt. The smoking section can get a bit smoky sometimes - it's the U.P. afterall - tho' the stench never penetrates the non-smoking section (maybe it's the fishbowls talking?). Hands down my favorite place to eat in the area. I love that the Ambassador hasn't changed since I was a kid. We love the tostada pizzas, and the classic submarine sandwiches, although they have MANY other delicious dishes to offer. Their fishbowl drinks are popular, but we love the KBC beer on tap. You can count on it being very busy during dinner, especially on the weekends. However, the staff is very efficient and food never seems to take very long. We've eaten here many, many times and have never had a bad experience. We love this restaurant!! read more

The Ambassador had some great atmosphere and some interesting history. The cheese and broccoli soup was the best I've had in a long time. My girlfriend loves the pizza, but I was not impressed, of course she had a couple fishbowls over the course of the evening. The Italian soda wasn't that great either, mine tasted like caramel extract poured right in some carbonated water. All in all it is an enjoyable experience. Almost worth going just for the wall and the poem on the menus about it, and if you like good soup, then go. read more

A friend of mine who went to college in Houghton highly recommended the Ambassador, and if you are looking for classic college food the Ambassador is for you. We, unfortunately, were looking for a little something more. I called my friend after driving through the Houghton/Hancock area and finding nothing that appealed to us. We had driven past this one place and said, "that looks like a dive bar." Little did I know that THAT was where my friend was directing me to east. While it looks like a dive bar on the outside, the ambiance inside is actually quite nice. Lots of dark, hard wood with some stained glass thrown in there to please the eye. It's clear that the people around town liked it because we went on a Monday night, and it was quite hoppin'. We got squeezed into a tiny corner booth next to a large table of college students drinking copious amounts of alcohol and leaving the table every ten minutes to catch yet another smoke. When I talked to my friend, he said that I had to get a pizza and had, had, HAD to promise I'd get a Fishbowl. I didn't inquire, but I promised on both accounts. This pizza has a very thin crust, so if you like a thin crust pizza you'll like this one. And, a Fishbowl is a big cup of alcohol. They have a full page on the menu of Fishbowls alone. I had the Fun on the Beach. I recommend it. But many of the people around me had some blue drink, so clearly it's popular. So if you like thin crust pizza, yummy alcoholic beverages, and the college scene, this place is for you. read more

I absolutely love the tostada pizza! I've tried some of the other pizzas as well, and they were good, but nothing can compare to the tostada pizza. It's definitely on my to-do list everytime I'm in the area! I will admit, however, that the women's bathroom is kind of creepy. There's a huge mirror on the wall between the women's and men's bathrooms, and I can't shake the feeling that it's a two-way mirror to the men's bathroom. Some of the best pizza, mixed drinks, and service you'll find anywhere. The specialty pizzas are all extremely unique going with Mexican (Tostada), Italian (Garlic Chicken), New England (Lobster), or just the BLT! I have never found a pizza that tastes quite as good as the ones they serve at the 'Ambo'. In regards to Mixed Drinks, the specialty Ambo Fishbowls are second to none. My personal favourites are the Scorpion and the Sweet Tart. They're reasonably priced for anywhere but Houghton ($7 apiece) for 16-20oz of mixed drink. I highly recommend the Ambo for anyone visiting Houghton or studying at MTU. It served as a great late night hangout when I was a student. read more

Decided to stop here for dinner, however, the experience was quite the event. We were seated practically immediately, but it wasn't until after our server took our drink orders we were told the kitchen was backed up by 45 min (no big deal, we get it). This should have been stated up front by the hostess. After over 45 min, our server stopped by again and stated that the to go orders had increased and our food would be delayed by another 20 min. I don't get why to go orders are pushing my order back. After around an hour of waiting our food finally showed up. My fiancé's pizza had three mushroom on it and at this point it wasn't even worth saying something about. Again, I understand being backed up/short on staff but at some point you need to slow the kitchen down to allow your staff to catch up. Unique pizzas, our table ordered 3 different type along with other entrees, chicken Cesar salad, vegetarian salad, nachos all was good except the veggie pizza.. Do not recommend, awkward veggies to be topped on a pizza and thought they used to much oil drizzled overtop - we sent it back. Third generation Italian with a old European feel. We were hungry for pizza and it was great. The current proprietor said the recipe hadn't changed since his Grandparents started the restaurant in the late 50's or early 60's. I would love to try other offerings on the menu. There are some very large turn of the century murals in the restaurant that give the area a fantastic vibe and are worth stopping in just to see if only for a beer or cocktail. read more

Dear Ambassador Manager, please please take that stinky burrito off your menu. I've seen some burritos in my time. This one however is not a burrito more like a piece of flaccid tortilla with some ground beef stuck in it. Almost like what you would get it to 7-Eleven. The pizza however is also fantastic. This also needs to be served on in aluminum serving platter of some sort. Not a piece of cardboard from a frozen pie. Have some respect bro. I know some will disagree, but I believe pizza is about the sauce first, then the crust. On both items I have to say Ambassador's pizza is ok. My kids disagreed and didn't really like it though. The crust seemed pre-made. You are not allowed substitutions on standard pizzas, but you can add topping (of which they have quite a few). The atmosphere is more bar than restaurant. It's a relatively small location which is busy and difficult to navigate around. Our waitress was nice but too busy to be adequately attentive to our refills. The pizza arrived hot . . . really hot . . . too hot. It seemed cruel to be so hungry and not be able to enjoy what was right in front of us.
