Because there are many individual employees who are so courteous and helpful, I ignored aspects of customer service and skill that were lacking in the 4 years that I have been getting my hair high-lighted at Ambiance by Kim, the colorist. Based on other reviews I am not alone in my disappointment with the blithely disrespectful middle-aged women controlling the front desk. I always felt rushed by Kim and her jam-packed appointments reflected in the chunky, uneven highlights. But the color was lovely and she seemed like such a nice person. I am low-maintenance anyway. I have since noted that the allotted time for a full head of highlights (found on their website) is 30 mins. with a colorist. Ambiance charges $185. An assistant completes the the foil removal. But I have just made an appointment with Darren's in Locust Valley as he comes highly recommended by a friend. The straw that broke this camel's back at Ambiance Roslyn was an attempt I made to reschedule my appt. 48 hours before said appt. The witch recognized my cell phone(!!) and immediately asked me to call back "when you are sure about your appt. honey". I thought oh she's confusing me with someone else! When I conveyed my confusion ( I repeated that I was calling to reschedule) she said " Kim said that you reschedule ALL the time so you're not permitted to make any more appts. unless you are sure you can make THAT appt. I asked her to be clearer.... She repeated the insult and it was so degrading. She was so utterly degrading to me. I am still in shock..."Kim said you are not ALLOWED to make any appointments unless you are sure you can make it". I make it to all of my appointments. I would never argue with a business when I can just leave and take my money elsewhere so I said, oh no no no cancel that appt and I won't be returning. And hung up. I do not argue with crazy. The exchange was bizarre. And irrational. And I wonder if the owners know that this is how the desk speaks to customers. I checked my 2020 calendar immediately and it turns out I went to Ambiance THREE times in 2020 for color. I rescheduled (always giving at least 48 hrs-one week notice) 2 of those 3 times. And, obviously COVID had played a role in that. And my handicapped son. Suddenly I was in 2nd grade in Catholic school, in trouble. This had gotten really, really personal. I don't know why (and I tip very well). My guess is that the goal is making as much money as possible and that requires booking a colorist to run an assembly line. Any interruption is not tolerated. The skill that Kim lacks is because she's rushing....30 mins. for a full-head of highlights. Unbelievable. We live on the North Shore of Long Island where we all have the luxury of finding a business that trains their staff to convey policy as well. Say, 72 hours notice for changing an appointment and certainly I would respect that. But Ambiance does not have a policy and instead, there's at least one misfit answering the phones, and an owners greed. I am embarrassed that I went to Ambiance for as long as I did. HORRIBLE experience. I asked for a very simple shadow root after my roots had gone a little orange after an at home touch up job. I walked out with SKUNK STRIPES in my previously perfect platinum blonde hair (which I thankfully had gotten professionally done elsewhere). When I asked why I had horrible black skunk stripes in my hair I was told that it was my fault and that "this happens sometimes" and to "go back to my original stylist if i didn't like how it was done", while this striped result is a direct result of sloppy dye application. I would have never stayed in the stylists chair if I had been warned that "this happens sometimes". Please go elsewhere for color. Complete hack job and $50 wasted. read more

I scheduled a 9am appointment for a blow out and was so happy with the results! Promptly got great a wash from Sandra and a beautiful blowout from Felicia. I have a lot of hair and this is the best wavy blowout I've had in as long as I can remember! Also needed last minute make up and it couldn't have worked out better that Daniel was able to squeeze me in! Great experience, highly recommended! read more

I started going to Ambiance soon after moving into the area. My husband and I had our 20 year HS reunions on subsequent nights and I wanted to look GREAT! A friend had recommended Anthony for color and the front desk recommended Kathy for the blow out. I wasn't raised in the area and had only had my hair blown out once, for a friend's wedding, and I wound up going home, showering and blowing it out myself. So I was thrilled at the two fabulous blow outs I received from Kathy that weekend! This became my go to salon until Anthony, an owner's son, left for another salon and then to start his own salon. Stupidly, I followed. After multiple disasters there, I returned to Kathy at Ambiance for haircuts and used various colorists because as soon as I got used to someone, they cut their hours or left. By 2020 I was using Kathy for hair, Dana for color and once used Daniel, the makeup artist who made my driver's license pic and my bday celebration that same night, gorgeous!! But after reopening after COVID everything changed. Masks were not being utilized correctly and light hearted discussions during services became very politically charged! It became rather unpleasant as a physician to argue medical facts during a haircut, but I stayed for continuity. However, the quality of the haircuts and blow outs were rapidly deteriorating, the color came out differently every time. The straws that broke the camel's back occurred when after having emergency open heart surgery in the summer of '21, I had to cancel some appointments the same day. I was embarrassed about this and said I would call for appointments the same day so I knew I was well enough to make it. Therefore, the day I called, Dana was not available and they gave me an appointment with Kim. After meeting Kim and explaining the look we were after, with pictures and everything, I heard her FIGHTING WITH DANA THAT SHE SHOULD DO HER REGULAR CLIENT, Kim "had no time to start something new!" I was not asking for anything new, just illustrating what we had been working towards and explaining what was suboptimal with the last color appointment so that the formula could properly be adjusted. Something my new colorist asks me at the beginning of each visit, "how did you like it last time?" A proper inquiry for a colorist, or any service provider, to ask at a subsequent appointment! Imagine my embarrassment when I heard them fighting over who was going to get to NOT DO MY HAIR!! Dana eventually did my hair despite the fact that I was told she was not available!! I went home in tears! I had been a loyal client for 20 years and monogamous for the last ten!! My son also regularly uses Ken to cut his hair and Dana to highlight it. Who do you think pays for that?? I returned once more where Dana did color with some balayage highlights over the darker red. When I next dried my hair, the highlighted pieces starting breaking off my head!!!!! I had short, choppy pieces all around my face and on top of my head for months! My hair is naturally thinning with age, I couldn't afford to lose anymore, nor pay for haircuts that I could no longer make look decent on my own. I felt AWFUL AND EMBARRASSED ABOUT CANCELLED APPOINTMENTS DUE TO MY HEALTH, to try and makeup for any inconvenience, I tipped VERY GENEROUSLY in an area where I was told many people didn't tip at all!! I also gave extremely generous cash gifts at Christmas. What was a fabulous salon in 15-20 years ago has gone downhill enormously. I don't know if the issue is due to a change in some of the original owners, disgruntled employees having to adhere to COVID protection for a year or so, or just bad management and loss of talent, but I was DONE! They had had very talented practitioners, I don't know what happened to customer service. Prices continued to go up and quality went down in an inverse fashion! Luckily, I moved temporarily and thanks to YELP reviews, found a fabulous small salon right down the block, where one woman colors, cuts and blows out my hair! Best blow outs ever, and the two other girls in the salon do remarkable blowouts as well. I hope this helps clients find a suitable salon for their needs as other Yelp reviews helped me find my current wonderful salon. DO NOT come here if you are a person of color. I am Bi-Racial, mixed with black and white. My hair is naturally silky straight with a little bit of wave. Every time I get my hair blown out it takes 25 minutes. After coming to ambiance for last 14 years since I was 15 years old now all of a sudden they put in my profile that my hair takes 1 full hour to do. with no explanation as To what about my hair would ever take that long for just a blowout. If you're looking for a new salon give Ambiance a shot- especially if you're looking for a new colorist! I've been going to Dana and I absolutely love what she has done to my hair. I went from a boring brown to a fun blonde with minimal damage. My hair is thin to begin with and I have trust in Dana and that says a lot. A good hair colorist won't do you wrong or perform services that could potentially fry your hair like some other inexperienced colorists and salons do. The staff here is friendly and professional, appointments are pretty much always available, the girls call to remind you and confirm your appointments, and parking is always available. :) read more

Made an appointment for a haircut and granted it's my first time so apparently I'm not a valued customer(!) got there ten minutes before my appointment only to gingerly be advised that they don't have me in the book! If I could give 0 stars I would. Went to get my hair highlighted, the colorist was Tina. She had zero idea what she was doing and I spent 5 hours trying to fix the mistake. But the worst part? NO ONE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED HOW BAD IT WAS! The front desk staff was rude, the manager!? The rudest. All anyone wants is a "I totally see what you're saying and I'm really sorry I messed up, I want to make it right..." they were condescending, judgmental, rude people and I will do everything I can to spread the word. The girls behind the desk are so rude. I went there while visiting family for the weekend. My mother has been going there for years so I figured I'd goin for a blowout. I was put with Joey who told me he is an owner. You would think being an owner he actually knows what he is doing. I have wavy thick hair and as soon as I sat in his chair I could tell he was not happy I was put with him. It took such a long g time only to finish with a frizzy puffy blowout. I left unhappy and will not be returning. Word of advice as an owner at the very least you should know how to do a blowout and you should value new customers looking to give you a shot. This place is nothing but an old fashioned dated beauty parlor. Word of advice there are plenty of salons in the area try and avoid this one. read more

I am totally in love with this place. I've been getting my haircut here for over 2 years and can't imagine going anywhere else. Eddie works miracles with the scissors and Jonathon is a rock star with the blow dryer. Every time I get my hair done here no matter how gross I feel going in, I always leave feeling like a sexy beast. They treat all their customers like old friends. I also got my hair relaxed here and it was handled perfectly. Just the look I asked for. The only side note is do not go on a weekend if that is an option. I have been going to Ambiance for over ten years for cut and color. Although I live in Manhattan, I try to make appointments at Ambiance when I visit family. For color (blond highlights), I go to either Kim or Veronica--both are amazing, and fun to talk to. You will not sit in the colorist's chair in complete silence, which I think is totally awkward! They are engaging, awesome women who have done a kickass job each time. For cut and style I *always* go to Ella. There is literally no one there who is better, in my opinion.
