I had a very bad experience with America Car Rental. I specifically paid in advance and reserved a car with automatic transmission. When I arrived, they told me they did not have any automatic cars available and could offer only manual transmission. I asked for an upgrade or a higher-class car with automatic transmission, but they said they had no automatic cars at all. Since I had no other choice, I was forced to take the manual car. The car they gave me was very old, poorly maintained, and in bad condition. It did not feel safe or reliable. This is unacceptable service. If you don't have the car type that customers pay for, you should not confirm the reservation or take the money. I do not recommend this company and will never use them again. read more

The entire rental process was a force we went to the car before we went to Mexico down. There was told the insurance we had wasn't sufficient, although we did ensure through the app and they jerk us around and jerked us around After about an hour and a half they finally were able to get a manager, and we lack of a better word settled on a price which was two times higher than the initial agreement and contract. I had to call the rental agency that we got through originally which I believe was Hopper and they refunded money back to us for the insurance But this was a real terrible experience. We then went to get the SUV that we had ordered because we were going to be going to Ceanne and they ended up giving us a Dodge Journey, which they claimed to me was a top-of-the-line SUV. It was a very horrible experience. I would not recommend that to anybody ever again. We try to get money back on it and to no avail never got answers so I give this company the employees and the whole realm of what was going on there a big fat zero. read more

my boyfriend and I rented a car in tulum for 3 days. we decided to extend the contract 3 more days and change the drop off location. I was never told this would forfeit my deposit. they also double charged my boyfriend and I the extra $136 that it cost to drop off at another location (which they also didn't disclose until after we paid). so I was charged $372 to drop off at a different location instead of the $136 we were told later that it would cost to do this. not a great way to do business. will never use this company again. read more

Do NOT rent from these scam artists, avoid at all costs. It's baffling such a business can exist for so long. We walked out and refused to pick up the car because of the following: 1) I rented through a travel agency under the company "Economy", which apparently is covered by this rental company here so it's sketchy right off the bat that the company names do not match. 2) Did not recognize my third party insurance that I got through priceline, demanding I use their own insurances. They kept asking that I show a proof of letter for the insurance. After I did, they said that the letter had to be from a bank and refused to take the insurance. WTF?? 3) They demanded I make a $22,000 peso deposit to take out the car. This was the last straw and is absolutely outrageous. Do not rent from this company. You come on vacation to escape the type of stress and headaches that would come along with renting from these guys, do yourself a favor and get a car from somewhere else. read more

I went here on the advice of a local friend. My experience was quite good with one of the employees (can't remember his name but was a short guy with glasses and he lived in Denver for a few years). Everything was smooth and he didn't try to stick me with any unnecessary charges. The car was good too. So you ask why a 3 star review? Upon check out, I was waiting for my friend to pick me up. I overheard a different employee (the one who helped me wasn't working that evening) trying to tell a young gringo couple that they needed to pay for extra insurance and America Car doesn't accept insurance from the credit card. Definitely not true. The couple ended up walking out without the car. I imagine they went to another rental place. Under no means, rent from them! Every single customer that was there thenight we were there was annoyed/surprised/complaining. They thibk because they are in the middle of nowherw you have no chiixe but to pay all the extra scam money they demand. We had a prepaid booking which included the obligatory by Mex law third party insurance. Being a lawyer and Mexican resident I know the law. They insisted we had to pay all their other insurances which came to three times the amount. We declined saying we had our own insurances, so they said they would not give us the car, intimidating us to pay the insurances. Moat customers give in, we did not. We walked out of there (as they refused to take us back to airport) walked to the end of the road, turned right and found many other (reputable) car rental agencies and were able to rent the car we wanted without the insurance scam. Our credit card has refunded us for this fraud as it was prepaid. Owner should be in jail and employees should find other jobs where they don't have to violate their principles (if they have any). DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE. we reserved a mini van and they ended up giving us a HUGE cargo van without telling us this was going to be the car we would get. In Tulum, you can't park or move about with this big of a car. When we went to return it, they said it was "an upgrade" from a mini van. Definitely not. At first, he said we wouldn't get any money back (even though it says in the contract we could) and then the guy called customer service and they said we could get the money back for the days we didn't use but still haven't gotten it... he then tried to sell us a "driver" to drive this cargo van which was going to cost an extra $700 pesos a day! What a joke. Wouldn't recommend in a million years. Rent a bike instead. Your legs will die, but it's better than dealing with America Car Rental! read more

If I could pick less stars I would. This place has the most unprofessional employees I have honestly ever seen. I have never seen more egregious violations of business practices. My friend rented a car for three weeks. He should have learned from the way they tried to aggressively push additional costs and insurance on him from the beginning that he should run away as fast as possible. upon returning the vehicle, and after he threw away all of the trash, they still demanded that he pay a $40 car cleaning fee. This was unbelievable; this is a little beach town and there was a little bit of sound; why is that the job of consumer? They should clean the car before passing it off to next customer. His cars radio and the charger didn't work. He told them and asked for some deference. They doubled down and were so rude. Then they would not even give him the next car he was renting because they said it was half an hour early! The car was just sitting there ready to go! We couldn't cancel this next rental because it was through a third party lease. The guy that was handling the matter was completely disrespectful and kept calling him "bro" this bro that and was condescending and extremely aggressive. Finally after my friend went and professionally cleaned the car after this ordeal and while waiting for new car rental, they charged still 40 cleaning fee and a 10 dollar late fee!! So disrespectful, unfair, and terrible establishment overall. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. read more

Spent two weeks in Mexico with two cars from American rental, one rented in Cancun, one rented at this location in Tulum. Absolutely no problems with the location in Cancun. The Tulum location charged us $50USD for a dirty car, after we told them where we were headed and what we were doing. DO NOT RENT A CAR HERE. Get it in Cancun if you really need one. read more

After 5 months of unbelievable aggravation, I have finally given up on their ever refunding the $1,005 they were given by my bank for the deposit on the car I rented from them. used these guys in Tulum. I didn't even care about the fact that the car was a piece of shit, dirty, and the belt squealed like a stuck pig. I was renting a car in Mexico so who gives a shit right? what I did care about was the scam they pulled. on the walk around I noted damage to the car and they marked it with a scribble on their inspection sheet and gave me a copy. when I returned it, in the same spot they noted on the bumper, they said i damaged it and caused new damage. they claimed they would have marked the area with a number rather than just a scribble mark that meant light damage. they wanted to charge me 2900 pesos or $160 USD. Terrible rental. I booked online through Excellence Car Rental Tulum. Turned out to be this crew. By email they said they would pick up at the road outside my resort (Dreams) at 3pm. After 30 sweaty minutes I called andthey said they had no-one to come get me. I caught a taxi into Tulum. The taxi driver asked me why was I using these guys and not Hertz. I should have listened. After an eternity in the non-AC office they eventually showed me a car, fairly dinged up but they noted all the damage. Inside the car was grimy but what did I expect? As I drove off I found the check engine light was on, then I saw the car had 124,000 km on it. The radio didn't work,the windows were manual wind down. It was a piece of junk. I pulled into the supermarket at the corner to decide what to do. I was taking it back even if I lost my money. I did get my money back, that was the only good thing. Next day I rented from Hertz and got a shiny VW with 8,000 km on it, super nice car. read more

Tulum Car Rental (American Car Rental) Thieves DO NOT rent from these crooks! We rented a car for two days in Tulum and opted for the $20/day extra insurance which had road side assistance and no deductible in case of an accident. The individual in the office helping us on the day we rented seemed pleasant and fair. Unfortunately, this was only an act disguising their shady and extortionist practices. We returned the car on time with more gas than it had in it when we picked it up. Over the course of two days we probably drove 200 km. Understandably, there was dust from the road on the car. If you have driven in the Yucatan, you know dust on the roads is unavoidable. The car rental scheister wanted to charge us 1000 pesos ($58 US) for a car wash! We refused, insisting that the dust on the car was normal for two days of driving. After standing firm, going back and forth with them for 15 minutes and refusing to pay their extortionist penalty, they relented and dropped the charge. It's sad that a tropical vacation needed to end on such a sour note. Perhaps even more disheartening, is that this experience perpetuates the perception of dishonest business dealings in the Yucatan. I am no stranger to traveling in developing countries. I try very hard to be fair, respectful and polite in my interactions with locals. I expect the same respect and fairness in return. American Car rental obviously does not practice this as part of their business, and therefore, they do not deserve your business....Renter beware! read more
