Way before COVID they were inconsistent but my return to AA commenced with a connecting flight to Rhode Island via CLT. They rerouted us. Long layovers which I purposefully scheduled to avoid actually occurred and it was rough while traveling with an elder who happens to be disabled. No regard for keeping our seats together. For the prices ... I'd like the service to match. On a business trip to Mcallen Texas...outbound was ok, On return, I arrived at airport at 0900...flight was scheduled for 10:25. DELAYED 2 hours. Mechanical problems. Concerned that I had several connections to make through Dallas. 2 hours later--"the parts" had to be installed--another 2 hour delay. 2 hours later--another delay. Yes, 4 stars for this round trip from Providence to Aruba. Note that this is based on a comparison with other airline trips, so the bar is quite low! That said, American Airlines on this trip: 1. Departed and arrived on-time or very close to on-time, even with weather issues. 2. Their customer service was prompt, professional and courteous. 3. We were able to sit in exit rows, so our legroom was actually quite good 4. The flight attendants were also polite and professional. 5. The boarding process was organized and timely, even thought all the flights were full. 6. The entertainment system worked, even on my laptop. Only pretzels and cookies were served on a four hour flight from Charlotte to Aruba (though we brought food aboard as did many passengers), nonetheless, they were able to get us there and back without issue, something JetBlue did not accomplish, on two consecutive attempts. read more

Frequent traveler here. Normally fairly chill about the whole air travel experience because I get that things happen the control of the airline and unless it the behavior of an individual employee, often not controllable by the local airport staff. I was ready to give a 1-2 star review after yesterday's cancelled flight because the communication on the delays were infrequent and mostly via text vs announcements. The data on the AA app was horribly incorrect, as was data available from flight tracking apps. Okay, the flight (and many others) was delayed and ultimately cancelled as a result of a heavy thunderstorm rolling up the east coast and I get that... I've no love of flying through a lightening storm in a metal tube, but the comms could have been much better. So, what changed this to a 4 star review? One person! The gate agent when I showed up 9 hours before my rescheduled flight and approached the counter after bypassing the kiosk to check-in and wait for hours. She was super polite, professional, and efficient when I asked about any opportunities for a seat on an earlier flight, handed me a boarding pass that gets me home about 6 hours earlier than the rescheduled flight. Without a blink she asked if I was checking a bag. Weekends are a precious commodity in my household, so I appreciate getting 25% of my waking hours in the day back. Unfortunately I didn't catch the agents name, but her polite helpfulness made my day. Thanks to this one person, AA remains on the short list of airlines I'll even consider flying. read more

American airline flight 5198 - from PVD to PHIL on May 14th, flight from 12.29pm supposedly reaching at 2.23pm in PHIL. The reason is "maintenance". At 1 pm, I started to panicked. They said they know some has connection flight, but good lord, they didn't mention anything until 1.55pm, they pushed all the flights to another Philly flight AA4609. I think this could be their goal to combine everyone in the two flights to save fuel.. :/ I have a connection in Philly to San Fran at 3.50pm. Obviously not making it. We took the 2.23pm flight, but we reached at 3.30pm surprisingly. Sadly though by the time we got out it was 3.40pm in Terminal C and the other flight I'm supposed to catch is at 3.50pm in Terminal A lol great. So now I am gonna take 6.20pm flight to San Fran Flight AA2306 with a boarding time of 5.45pm. Of course, at 5.45pm they were still boarding passengers from the previous flight at gate C23, leaving to StLouis... then AA2306 is delayed to 6.33pm. We were boarded by 6.45pm i believe, however!!!!!! The pilot told us there are maintenances two times, 10-20min each time. Now it is 7.45pm.. and they jus told us it will be another 45 min lol. Great. My day is ruined.. no compensation for the ruined day for everyone and their business kept going. :/ this is what you get for paying the cheapest flight. They won't let us out.. and if we do wanna go, we need to take everything with us. There was something I had to miss at 1pm to take this flight.. I might as well jus do that instead at least something productive came out today instead of just waiting around.. the latest text I got was delayed to 8.10pm. It is now 7.52pm.. Edit 1: they kept texting us, we will fly at 9pm.. then at 9.15.. then at 9.30pm. They wouldn't let us out.. then they ask us to leave at 9.25pm. They asked us to go to terminal B, gate 9.. we did. And finally they cancelled our flight. They told me I can get my luggage from the claim baggage area. I went. And they told me I am not getting it until it reaches the final destination in SFO...... which is the next flight that I will have to take. I don't want to take this. I just want to be done with it and go back home to Providence!! I just want to cancel my entire trip!!!! I called customer service they could only rebook for me. They could do jack shit on refunds or vouchers. I had to get back in (yes, all the jazz on security) to go back to customer service. It is now 10.41pm... read more

They are the worst when it comes to customer relations. Our flight was delayed with no notice. They lost our luggage which caused us to miss our connecting flight. and we spent the night in the airport. We requested a refund and they gave us half of what the flight was worth. I sent them 2 messages and the response to both was identical, word for word. They never read either message. I get that things go wrong but shouldn't they at least try to make them right. Flight was cancelled yesterday morning, we were told there are no other flights until tomorrow. Whatever, fine. I asked for a hotel voucher, at first they said no. I am traveling with a 3 year old and had to ask "so what am I supposed to do, sleep in the airport?" Finally a more experienced agent stepped in and was able to contact a manager to authorize a hotel voucher. We are now at the airport the next morning, check in took very long and the bag check machines malfunctioned. I tried to proceed to the counter and was made to get in another line and wait AGAIN. Ok, this rating us specific to the experience my disabled Aunt had while flying back to her point of origin. She needs wheelchair assistance and was taken off the plane and left in the departure area for two hours rather than taken to the baggage claim where her bag and family members were waiting her arrival. Unfortunately I had to book through Expedia with AA and of course the plane had computer problems upon take off so we were stranded for hours at the airport with out a convenient return trip to our final destination. WORST AIRLINE EVER!!!!!! So let's see, this is the worst airline I have ever flown with! And the supervisor from the Dallas office named Larry, was anything but helpful. After calling to complain about how inconvenient this flight was, there was nothing done to resolve the situation. No voucher or refund!!These are our issues that we had: - Flight claimed that there was air traffic control delay but when I spoke to AA customer service they said it was a weather issue even though the weather in Boston is fine. - Our flight was delayed an hour and 20 mins plus the extra 40 minute wait for baggage claim - oh yeah that's right, the nasty agent made my friend check his carry on bag claiming the flight was full capacity and there was no room (mind you we paid extra for priority boarding and we're even all the way in group 6) - then we get onto the flight and see there is plenty of room in the overhead cabin & we hear on the loud speaker that if anyone's bag is not fitting that they will put it in the back where they have extra storage - even the flight attendant agreed there was plenty of space - Baggage claim took 40 minutes to start letting the bags on the carousel - now I'm just getting home after having to take an hour drive home and have work in a few hours Never been on such an inconvenient flight and treated with so much disrespect! When I arrived at the at airport the flight was delayed due to maintenance and we didn't leave until 11. I was not happy about arriving so early or the Small prop plane with no wifi. 9-18-2018, we were scheduled to fly from Providence to Louisville, kY via Philly. At airport checkin we were rerouted due to "air traffic" problems to Washington DC, then to Louisville. After no less than 7 delays we changed our flights, due to "mechanical" problems. Finally got to DC @ 10 p.m. and were given hotel room for the night, due to mechanical problems. During this 12 hour affair we were offered no food vouchers at all. Had it been weather related we would have spent the night in the airport. Finally got to Louisville @ noon the 19th. Contacted AA regarding displeasure from the experience. The advised weather was the problem all along. The weather service on the 18th reported clear skies in DC all day. I do not like being not told the truth. Last year we has problems with AA out of Providence. Got the run-around then. Red lights should have gone off! Last time we will fly AA..........ever. At least tell clients the truth, they will appreciate it and remain clients. read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would!!!! We will never again be flying AA. Trip to Houston kept delaying. Then trip back to providence had a 3 hour delay. It was supposed to be landing in providence at 1044pm. Now told it would be landing until close to 2am!!! Then to be told the flight is cancelled. 3x. Then to be told we are flying out at 1am!! Then to be officially cancelled at 1:15am. For the next flight out at 7am. To be told AA will give us hotel vouchers. To find out NO HOTEL within an hour near the airport has rooms available. To then be told by an AA worker. "Go sleep on the floor then - I don't know what to tell you" Are you serious?!!! A shout out to American Airlines for their excellent treatment of my 90 yr old, WWII vet (and I made him wear his hat) Dad - three flights each way from east to west coast - they whisked him through airports (one connection about half a mile away) so he'd make each next flight. AA moved his (aisle) seats forward whenever they could, were courteous and helpful; they made every leg of his trip totally enjoyable. We got to the airport an hour before our flight and of course had to wait in line, so by the time we checked - in we were told "we were unable to check our luggage because of the 45 minute cut off time." I am so disgusted with American Airlines. My 16 year old flew for the first time alone. After a 2 hour delay, and having to reroute because he would miss his connection, on his 2nd of now 3 legs, the gate attendant in Dallas made him check his clearly correct carry on size bag through to Billings. My son did not want to check and when he asked him nicely if he could please just keep his bag the guy rudely told him if you ask me again I will kick you off of this flight. Now his flight from Dallas is delayed and he will barely make the next connection in Salt Lake City. The woman swears up and down that if he makes it the bag will make it but lo and behold he made it and the bag did not. I know things happen, but if this jerk of a guy had let him carry on (there was room he took a photo of an empty bin) he wouldn't have to wait a day for luggage, American wouldn't have to deliver over 2 hours to the ranch he is staying at, and my son would have had a better first experience flying alone.
