Like others on the Google Reviews claim, the "minimum paid" on the website is definitely not true. I was quoted $150 for a 2000 Taurus that was non-running. Whatever, needed it out of my parking lot. Tow truck shows up the next day at the scheduled time and the driver offers me $100. When I pushed back, he just sort of shrugged at me and didn't budge on the $100 price. Ultimately, I was on a tight timeframe so I took the $100. The staff are easy to work with and they are quick but between the low initial quote and then the subsequent lowball, I will never do business with them again. There are MUCH better options in Madison. It must be true because there couldn't be a worse one. read more

waited an hour to get our car fixed, and another hour for the owner to come to the shop and write the receipt. our car was gonna die because it needed a small part connected to the battery. We got an estimate from our automotive dealer back home, but it cost almost twice as much as we expected. Also took forever for them to get us a warranty on the part. I'm very disappointed in my experience here. I'd been emailing back and forth about a transmission for my car. I was told that this transmission was available and set up a time to come one week beforehand. When I showed up today, the staff that was working (Matt, I think) wasnt expecting us and they had the owner come. She claimed she never heard of anyone coming and said the transmission was on the top shelf and I was asked to come back an hour later. When I showed up for the second time, Matt had to apologize because the transmission was not there and had probably been sold, and he was left to tell us the news. read more

Chicken sh!t operation. Purchased an 01 grand am with about 66000 mile for what I thought was a fair price. The car broke down about a month later. Cosmetically it was crap, but it should have been reliable, considering that's what I was told. Only problem that I was informed about was that the radio was locked, but they told me to bring it back up the next day when they had some spare time and they would either unlock it or replace it. So I came back the next day and they told me they couldn't get it and to call back in a couple day to see if they had more free time to look at it. Swung back on by and they couldn't get it and told me I would have to go to the dealership, which I did and was told that it would have to be replaced. Went back to American auto the following Monday and they finally just replaced it (with a used cheapo aftermarket stereo). But hey that's fine, it works. Started to drive home only to find out that I didn't have blinkers or brights anymore. So when I got home I found out that they just didn't plug in two switches. And the big problem was the engine. On new years eve I was driving to work when it started to overheat. I pulled over and took a look. It wasn't the coolant. And it had been dripping oil in the garage, about a third of a quart. So I looked at the dip stick and it looked low but within operating range. But I put a little oil in it anyways and it was fine the rest of the way to work. At 4am on my way home it started heating heating up again. Pulled over immediately checked everything again, couldn't figure it out so I tried putting some more oil in it, drove for literally a minute when I had to pull over and get it towed home. I had it for 36 days at this point. On the following Friday I got it towed back to American auto who said they would look at it, but then I was told that it would have to wait. They looked at it Tuesday and told me that the head gaskets and maybe the heads would have to be replaced. With a price estimate of $1300-$1500, however I had gotten the 2 month 50/50 warranty, so $600-$800. But there is absolutely no way I caused the issue. The repair process was even more ridiculous. First off I was told it will be 10 to 14 days or so. It was a full 28 days. I was told it would be ready by a given date at least at least 7 times. They decided to swap the engine instead of just fixing the other one. They did so without checking with me first. In fact they never called me like they claimed they would several times to give me an update. When three weeks came my uncle went up to talk to them in person and we find out that one of my mirrors has been broken. And that has added multiple day to the repair. The mirror they put on has a bunch of marks all over it. They couldn't get the oil sensor into the new engine so the low oil light is constantly on and I have to check to oil by hand on a regular basis to ensure it doesn't get low. They also didn't change the odometer, so I have absolutely no idea how many miles the replacement engine has on it. Throughout the entire process I was treated like scum by the employees of American auto. In fact the only days that I was treated with any respect was the day I purchased the vehicle from them, and the day I got it back (the two days they got money). They are rude and nasty. They acted as if I was stealing from them by simply expecting them to live up to the laws that licensed dealers are required to follow. They didn't like that they didn't make a big profit off of the repair because of the 50/50 warranty I had. When I was trying to get the stereo fixed they were clearly just trying to brush me off hoping that I would simply give up and forget about it. The furthest I had driven the car since having it was 16/17 miles. The only time I had it on the highway was the short stretch between Madison and Sun Prairie. I'm 24 years old but I have to have at least four times the hours behind the wheel has an average 24-year-old. From when I first started to learn to drive to now my driving record doesn't contain a single speeding ticket and only one crash, which even the witnesses of the crash said was not my fault. The reality is that I did not causes the damage to my engine. It was definitely related to an issue it had prior to the sale. Most likely it was a week seal in the head gasket that went undetected until it had a massive breakdown. However this would have usually been found out with the proper diagnostic tools that a license dealer would have had to use prior to putting a vehicle for sale. "A dealership must tell you what it can reasonably discover about the vehicle" "Dealerships perform a used vehicle inspection ...They test drive the vehicle, and check the exterior of the vehicle, the underside, and under the hood for problems"- WI DOT. They are low quality chicken sh!t operation. I noticed the smell of weed on a couple of them on multiple visits. My recommendation is to avoid them at all coast. read more

American Automotive did a great job working on my BMW. I had a couple sets of used tires I wanted mounted and my snow tires taken off. It's hard to find a shop that will mount and balance used tires, but American Automotive does it for $20 a tire. I went there last week because they treated me well last winter when I had snow tires to install on my car. I had 9 year old locking wheel studs that they couldn't get off on 3 of the 4 wheels. The owner, George ordered special sockets to remove the locking studs while I was there last week. I called Sarah to make sure they had them and went there to have the work done yesterday. An hour later, I drove away with my summer wheels and used tires on. No charge for the work getting the mangled locking studs off. I thought I had a bent wheel, but David the tire guy told me it was a warped rotor. I saw my mechanic and he agreed. They have a new customer-me. Nice work, American Automotive. read more

I called this place to get a price for my car. The website says $150.00 minimum. I was okay with that, but I was surprised when they said they would give me $160.00! Nice! Well not so fast.The man on the phone asked if the car was complete, meaning engine, transmission, etc. He asked if the catalytic convertor was there. He asked if the tires were inflated. He never asked which wheels the car had & the type of wheels is not mentioned on the website either. The driver came out & said he would give me $140.00 not $160.00 because the wheels were steel & had hubcaps. After sometime we got to $150.00. I think he only went to $150.00 because I kept pushing the guarantee of $150.00 on the website. I almost wonder if maybe the driver was trying to put some cash in his pocket. read more

I was selling a running vehicle as junk, they offered $200 plus the tow by phone. When the driver tried to offer $180. I said nothing doing, and he acquiesced. It's probably just a tactic they use to try and make a few extra bucks, as most people don't like to haggle. I don't mind negotiating, but in this case there was nothing to talk about. They made an initial offer, I accepted, the car was as described, thus we had a deal, and there was no going back on it. Once this was sorted, the driver towed the car quickly and efficiently. read more

Consistent with most reviews about this company, what is promised in ads, by phone or online will most likely not be what happens. They had received detailed photos of our truck inside and out before they arrived and the truck ran well as we had verified. (there was a major issue with the braking system so it had no brakes) Unable to find anything to lower the amount they had promised to give me for it, they pulled the dipstick out and took it back to their truck. This was bizarre as I was holding out a rag for him to wipe the dipstick off on. A few minutes later the dipstick was returned to me with pink and blue glitter on it. I was then told there were metal shavings in the oil so they couldn't give me what they promised on the phone. My brother had to come out and tell them to leave the property immediately. Makes me wonder how many women they've done this to. What they didn't expect was that my 7 yr old daughter who witnessed this said "Hey mom, that looks just like my hair glitter." Enough said.
