Ordered cheeseburger and fries. Staff was friendly. The joint is whimsy with mixed messages, music and reading books are the themes. Place was oddly quirky. Posters of various rock personalities and even a small stage. Burger came with the works, tomato, lettuce and toasted bun, and oh yeah, cooked onion. I like raw onion but cooked worked okay. Fries were frozen and deep fried. Bun was nothing special but glad they toasted it to elevate it somewhat. Overall, okay burger and fries. Not from scratch. read more

Wow! Wow! Wow! I really fell in love with the concept of this place. The burgers are exactly what you would dream burgers from a 60's spot would taste like. This place is perfectly simple and it wouldn't make sense any other way. The decor is too damn cute & the family who's owns it have phenomenal customer service! DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT SERIOUS FOOD POISONING. My boyfriend ordered a cheese burger with fries and 1 pupusa. Of course there was a hair in the cheese burger. (We both have worked in food service so we understood not a huge deal it happens). This is the gnarly part. Less than a hour after he ate the burger and 1 pupusa he violently threw up everything he ate. Not only did he throw up but started having problems with his vision, horrible migraines, and needed to sleep as soon as he finished yacking everything up. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place unless you're trying to spend the night on the toilet possibly even in urgent care/ emergency room. You have been warned. read more

Great place. Was not in the mood for a touristy place while visiting Pacific Grove. Cute decor. Very accommodating. We were disappointed they did not have the fried artichokes. We got calamari instead. We both got the Breakfast Burger. Over easy egg. Crispy bacon. Cheese. Fries were good. I opted for a side salad instead of fries. The salad ingredients were your typical lettuce, cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes. But they were incredibly fresh. If we come back to Pacific Grove, we will eat here again. read more

Had a great lunch here last Monday - great service, fun decorations. Very kid friendly. They had fun decorations all around (including pictures). I had the avocado bacon burger and my boys got classic burgers. All were perfectly cooked, toppings were plentiful and fresh. We also got the super hot dogged which was grilled perfectly. They had also had bottle cap checkers on a Beatles themed checker board to keep the boys occupied and having fun and a decent beer selection for me :). Walking distance from the Aquarium. Fun place! Friendly service, great selection of menu items, family friendly checkers game on the table with holiday decorations. Milkshakes and drinks came out first - super quick, followed shortly by the main food - delicious burgers and fries. They also told us there is free salsa dancing lessons on Thursday followed by salsa dance night. More live music on Saturday and Sunday too. We'll be back! read more

I think I've found my new favorite burger place. I ordered the Ortega (peppers and jack cheese) and my boyfriend had the Bacon Avocado burger, both were juicy with super melty cheese! After driving 3 hours with a toddler we ALL needed a quick bite! This was about 6 minutes from our hotel so it was perfect. It's in a little strip mall, we were able to snag a parking spot quickly. We walked in and we were automatically like WOW! So much personality! There's a record player, old records, TONS of book ( I'm a book nerd so that was awesome to see) So we're automatically greeted by a gentleman & lady, we were the only ones in there at the time. We spent a few minutes looking around before even looking at the menus. So we ordered our food and it came out quick, by this time about 4 more parties had arrived. The food was very fresh, I got "jose's burger" (jalapeño cheese burger) & it was cooked perfectly, nice and juicy with a grilled bun. The French fries were great and had a good crunch! This is such a good stop after a long day in Monterey! We came in and it was empty, at first it doesn't look like much, but it has this rock and blues ambiance inside. I was immediately a fan. The burgers weren't out of this universe, but they were well cooked, had fresh ingredients, and tasted damn yummy. We also got a free milkshake! I got the veggie burger, which is what you'd expect, for details, it was mushroom based. The onion rings were also very good. A good, but not great burger joint in Monterey. I enjoyed the California burger with avocado and bacon, and though the burger was tasty (and the bun), it wasn't as juicy as I would have hoped. When we arrived we were the only people in the restaurant for at least 20 minutes, but service was prompt. The onion rings had a good batter, but were left in the fryer a little too long, so had a slightly "too golden" flavor. Prices are a little high for what you're getting, but since it's Monterey, I'll let that slide. read more

This place is AMAZING!!! My husband and I drove from out of town to try this place after seeing all the reviews and boy this place did not disappoint!! I had The Uncle Sam burger and everything about it was perfect! Meat was well seasoned, the bacon was delicious and the bun was even good! You definitely get what you pay for here. We met the owner Marina and she was extremely friendly and stopped by our table to talk to us for while. Ate here because I wanted a burger and found this place on yelp. There were only two people here when I came in. I was greeted by a server right away. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a strawberry milkshake (milkshake was free with check in). The burger was good, not bad, but not outstanding either. My fries were hot and with some crispiness on the outside but soft when biting into them. The strawberry milkshake was made with ice cream (not strawberry syrup like a lot of places). My burger was not greasy at all which I appreciated. What sticks out most about this place is the ambiance, its got a retro vibe with posters of rock stars, not you typical "diner" chairs and what looks to be like an old record player in one corner. My husband and I were visiting the area from Sacramento, and after spending the first 2 nights in town dropping $80-120 on dinner for the two of us each night we wanted to save some money and just get a sandwich and a burger. We took a chance on American Burger and we're so thrilled. Not only did we finally get an AMAZING meal for 2 for around $30, but we liked it so much we went back the next night for the same order. My husband got the Wild West burger and fries and I got the American Club and curly fries. The curly fries are outrageously good and crispy and delicious. We took it to go back to our hotel and the food stayed crispy and perfect for us. Thank you so much for giving a middle class family on vacation a break for the last 2 nights we were in town. After a long wedding weekend in Monterey, we were just looking for a nice solid burger to fill our tums. The decor inside is a nice throwback, with bottlecap checkers and tic-tac-toe on every table. They also occasionally host live music here. Then the disappointment began. The server greeting us hardly made eye contact, and couldn't have cared less about our experience. He looked and acted like he absolutely hated being there, and it was only mid-day 3pm. Well, at least we had good burgers to look forward to right? Meh, wrong. As for the Oreo milkshake, kinda watery like it was overly blended with ice or milk or something. My husband and I walked in here on Sunday afternoon...cute burger place in a strip type mall. Waitress had nice friendly smile...but offered NO service. We sat for a good 15 minutes while she serviced other customers and other tables. Finally hunger drove us to a pizza place (Gianni's) across the street. Family owned food is simple but great tasting chili cheese fries are delicious they got great music in the background if you like 50s doowop.
