Food was ok. Service was not. We tried to redeem the free milkshake listed on Yelp and they did not honor it!! Talk about false advertisement. We ordered a sundae with chocolate ice cream, but she made it with vanilla ice cream, ruined that. And on the window they had a sign "burger and fries $7.99 anyway and anytime." It was ok. The fries were great, but that was the best thing we had. The burger was ok, and the fish & chips was "meh".

I ordered some burgers, fries and shakes to go for my nephew and myself and would definitely give it two thumbs up. I ordered the Jose Burger with fries and my nephew ordered a bacon burger. We both enjoyed it and will be ordering it again when we are in the mood for burgers and fries. I will skip the shakes next time as they added another ten bucks to the meal. This place was OK. My husband saw it had good reviews on Yelp, so we tried it out. We came around 12:00 p.m. on a Sunday. It looked like we were the first ones there. It was quiet and had an unusal atmosphere to it. When we walked in, I sort of had the impression that we would order our food at the large counter, but as we were walking towards the counter, an older man came to us and had us choose a place to sit while he gave us the menus. My husband and son ordered burgers, my 4 year old ordered chicken nuggets and fries, and I tried to order the "Calamari and Chips", but when I told the server my order he just looked at me really and said, "Hmmm..." He didn't expand on the "Hmmm..." so I didn't know what was wrong haha. He just stood there stared at me. I asked, "Sorry, do you not have any calamari and chips?" And he left the table without saying anything! My husband chastised me and said, "Well what did you expect? You don't go to a burger place and order calamari!" And I said, "Well we're in Monterey and they had it on the menu!" When our server returned he said, "I don't think we have chips." I told him that I was pretty sure that by chips, the menu meant french fries. But to play it safe, I ended up changing my order to a bacon, avocado burger and fries. I was a disappointed in my food. My burger seemed rubbery and I was pretty sure it had just been a frozen burger. My daughter got her chicken nuggets and said, "Look it's just like the ones we have from home." Meaning, that the chicken nuggets here were the same dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets that we buy at Costco. Overall, the place was just OK. I think I'll pass on coming here again. read more

yeah we're tourists in Monterey who wanted some good old burgers. Drove by this place around lunchtime and it's empty. We ordered four burgers and they took forever to come.....something like 20 minutes? I couldn't taste any mushroom in the mushroom burger, bleh. We ordered the Sweet Potato Fries and we all thought they were better than Hula's, which is known for them. They did not have a sauce for them, though, and ketchup is not the best for those for me. This is a family owned restaurant with comfortable seating and great music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, service and the food. Our meal arrived quickly and cooked to order. On a dare, I tried the "Crazy Shake". Its made with peanut butter, bacon and vanilla ice cream and is quite delicious! The bacon gives it a chocolate flavor making it taste great deal like a Reese's peanut butter cup. I just had to pop in to say how wonderful Jose and his diner was to my cousin.. Her wedding was held there today as a last minute no warning cancellation of her venue due to weather left her with no place to get married. Jose offered up his diner and closed it to general public for the event.. they went waaaayyyy above and beyond! I ordered food to eat from the diner kitchen instead of waiting for the wedding food and I have to say it was SUPER good!!! I had the Grilled Chicken Melt w/ Sweet Potatoe Fries and would SOOOO do it again it was very very good!! I would recomend this diner just because of the size of their hearts helping out in such a dire situation but the food won me over too.. You guys are the best!!! read more

Went with friends and the restaurant wasn't crowded at all, but it felt like we were imposing (one friend described the atmosphere as "corpselike"). The food was entirely unremarkable, the fries cold, and the service cool. Imagine outdated diner-ish decor and a one man and performing in the corner. The singer was definitely the best part of the dining experience even if it meant feeling a bit awkward as the only diners in the restaurant. Not the best meal I've eaten while visiting Monterey. Best burger I've had in a while: juicy, thick, and done just right--not too well done or too rare. I got the "Garlicky" burger and that was as strong as it sounds--and I've got the garlic stink to prove it! The fries were also really good, the right crispiness and thick, and plenty even in a burger side. My chocolate shake was really something special--ice creamy, frosty cold, thick ans rich, and whipped cream and fudge sauce to top. But maybe best of all was the service: we got a warm greeting from Jose, the owner and guy in the picture, who seated us and informed us of the house specials: the pupusa is his mom's specialty, and the burger is his own. His mom took our orders and seemed honestly happy to see us as well! This place is family owned and everyone we met was from the same El Salvadoran family. Then they gave us (party of three) a pupusa ON THE HOUSE to start with. Really nice general vibe--deep cushy chairs by the windows, pop art covering the walls, and clean bathrooms. Consider coming on a Saturday for the music--this Saturday (08/30/14) is a Hawaiian-themed and a ukulele master will be teaching a workshop on the ukulele! I highly recommend this place. read more
