    Coney Island Hot Dog

100 years of awesomeness! It's a classic Detroit restaurant with a rich history. It's family owned and operated and the coney dogs are pretty good and reasonably priced. Overall a great experience.

Came here second on my Detroit food tour, after Lafayette next door and this coney was A LOT better. Lafayette has an old school vibe, but American Coney Island had a newer, bigger, cleaner vibe. Staff was nicer, coneys tasted better! Not as snappy of a dog as Lafayette but overall a lot better tasting! More welcoming of a restaurant than Lafayette's next door. Yum!

Great service! Family Owned and Operated since 1917. Coincidentally that is the code for the Bathroom - 1917. We did the challenge and my opinion is that American has a better hotdog itself and the staff were engaging and fun. Much better place to kick back and enjoy a coney dog.

We had lunch at American Coney Island only because it was a few steps closer to the office. We were warmly welcomed and warmly waited on. It didn't take very long at all for our Coneys to arrive. Of course, I got mine all the way - chili, mustard and onions. That's the traditional way. Probably very unhealthy and yet, completely delicious. I enjoyed it very much. I skipped the fries, but my dining mates said there were light and fluffy and served hot. It's not a fancy place and it's not an expensive place. Get your Coney here! Had to try this place out based on recommendations. Food was good. Snap of the dogs was great. Chili cheese fries were meh... should've gotten two dogs. Service was great.

Sometimes life is simple Going to one of the two original Coney Islands is simple and very enjoyable Small menu you just get a Coney dog and fries and it comes real quick if I close my eyes, I can imagine that these coney dogs are better than any of the other others in Michigan. But they probably taste about the same. But that doesn't mean this place isn't a draw It's a cultural touchstone in downtown Detroit and it's worth a visit

My first time in Detroit and I knew I had to try a coney dog. There are two popular ones right beside eachother, but this one stands out because it's the corner lot and it's so bright so I stopped here! It was pretty good overall. The staff wasn't overly friendly, they seemed a bit rushed and maybe even a little bothered. But my order was placed fast and the food was received fast too.

You can't pass through Detroit and pass by this gem. Exceptionally kind and helpful staff and great Coney Island Hot Dogs. The interior is full of character, and the food hits the spot if you need something fast and satisfying. Thank you Grace for sharing a bit of the history of this estlishment with me. I will come back.

Chili cheese hot dogs! Too simple, and I did not like the hot dogs too much. It was a boiled hotdog on an untoasted bun with chili mash on top. The only nice thing was that the server was extremely kind and friendly to my group. I also thought the simple diner vibe was cute and casual.

Golden Fries. Just normal fries but they were good. Just needed salt.

Solid coney dogs. The dog itself had a great snap. The chili was fine. The fries were good and hot. You can order to go or dine in. There are plenty of tables. I think I liked Lafayette's coney better overall, but I enjoyed both spots.

Tried a Detroit Coney today. Not sure how it's different from other hotdogs other than chili is on it as a standard. Hotdog had a nice snap to it. It's a must try because it's part of Detroit history.

Coney dog. :) Service was incredible! An obvious Detroit classic. Dog has a great snap to it and this thing was loaded. Love to see it.

Detroit Coney Island Challenge! American was stop #2. Right off the bat once would notice the facility is newer and updated. Plus a larger space. Food took longer at American even though they were not packed. They do yell things here, from dining room through the restaurant and it felt odder than next door because it's more modernized and larger. The island dog was similar but I felt it had a slightly different sauce taste. I can't out my finger on it. Winner: Next door!

Might be the worst hotdogs I've ever had. Good service but food was so bad I didn't finish.

Good thing I came when I came, because it got busy as hell shortly after. I went with 2 coney dogs and a Vernors. The dogs were delicious! Messy as hell, but absolutely delicious. They come loaded with a ton of chili, onions, and mustard on a super duper soft steamed bun. The dog had a great snap to it and the simple ingredients just worked! My Vernors ginger ale soda was great, too! Never had one before. Really liked it though. Had a hint of vanilla, and was sweeter than other gingers ales I have had. I loved it! It was the perfect beverage to wash down my dogs. Service was quick and to the point. This is the type of place where you eat and get the fuck out. No lingering around talking afterwards lol. Really enjoyed my first meal in Detroit!

The Coney dog ($4) was ordered. It had the classic toppings of bean less chili, yellow mustard, and raw chopped white onions. This was solid. There was a nice bite on the chili with plenty of mustard and onions. The bread was soft and the hot dog was cooked appropriately. The chili was the key as it was hearty and meaty. Will I go back? Yeah, sure.

We have a lot of retro vibe going on, but it has a little hint of modernness though with the history. You'll come in and and you'll hear music playing in the background and it's a little bit aged, but it's a really chill vibe and it's not going to be the party kind of music you're looking for. Which is okay if that's not what you want! I have no issue with the service and everybody was pretty cool. The waitress was super friendly, especially when I couldn't make up my mind because there are so many options lol. It's tree pockets so you have to park on Michigan Ave but there is plenty of it. Depending on what kind of day or night it is though. But just be aware you have to pay for parking. Seasoned fries - the fries come very seasoned and super crispy. You get a ton of them as well. You may not even need ketchup actually. French onion - this burger was good. Came with some onion rings kinda on the side. It was cooked medium and they got it pretty right with the temp. The cheese was melted well and it was seasoned pretty good also. Blt - this was a good BLT and it was very stacked. I'm not sure if you can make it out from the picture but it had plenty of everything on here. The bacon tasted great. Tots - they came out really hot and super crispy and actually gave you a heck of a lot of them too so that definitely helped but these are really good and you didn't even need ketchup.
