The Coney dog ($4.35) was ordered. It consisted of their chili, yellow mustard, and raw chopped white onions on a steamed bun. This was solid. The chili was a little more liquidity than I would have liked, but the bun held up well with the number of ingredients incorporated. Came here before the Tigers game. This place is a lot more spacious compared to their next door neighbor. I went with 2 coney dogs and a medium Vernors (at the soda fountain). We had lunch at American Coney Island only because it was a few steps closer to the office. We were warmly welcomed and warmly waited on. It didn't take very long at all for our Coneys to arrive. Of course, I got mine all the way - chili, mustard and onions. That's the traditional way. Probably very unhealthy and yet, completely delicious. I enjoyed it very much. Another legendary Detroit institution located next door to Lafayette Coney Island - the story again being that both restaurants were one and formally owned by the Keros Bros. of Bill & Gus but they had a business falling out so split - I believe this one is no longer affiliated with the family where the other one might be (or the other way around). Amazing Coney Island dogs - hot dogs with chili or meat sauce, and other Greek fare like gyros. Super cool interior with an old-timey diner feel but interesting signs saying "Math is Cool" and "Smart Kids Rule." Service very prompt too. But legend has it Detroit is where these originally came from...and regardless of which city gets credit...American Coney delivers a nice dog. This was on our list of places to visit in Detroit for their Coney Island hot dog. We stopped by for lunch one afternoon while in the area, the restaurant had the look and feel of a diner. The service was fine, the gentleman took our order pretty quickly but then came back 10 minutes later saying that he forgot what we ordered and asked us again. Food wise, there wasn't anything special about it. The chili didn't really have a taste to it, it just seemed like a regular hot dog to me. As we continued our Detroit Battle of the Coney Dog, we land at American Coney. Parking is rough, so anticipate circling around. We got lucky and finally got a spot around the corner. Interior is a little cleaner than others we've been to. Service was equally consistent with other places we were at. Very solid. This dog took home the blue ribbon. Bun was nice and steamed. I believe it is a Sabrett dog that is grilled with natural casing. The "snap" as you bite into it is what us hot dog aficionados look for. The chili was very tasty and the mustard had a nice kick to it. They give you a fork and I kind of know why. They're not shy with the toppings. If you're not hungry enough for a taste tour, then I would put this at the top of your list! read more

The staff lacked any sort of interest (or personality really - think afterschool high schooler at work only because they have to be - mom and dad made me get a job, type attitude). Everyone seems to have their favorite place to get a Coney Island dog here in Detroit. American Coney Island is one of the big ones, and it just so happens that another big one is located right next door and is owned by the brother of the person who owns American Coney Island. Of course I had to try both, and of course I have opinions about both. The Coney Island dog at this place is just OK. They use the kind of hot dogs with the casings on them, so they snap when you bite into them, which can be polarizing. Either you love that snap (me), or you hate it (everyone else in my family). The snap, for me, was the best part of the hot dog, and everything else -- the chili and toppings -- is just OK. The great thing about American Coney Island is its location. The restaurant is situated on the corner of Lafayette and Michigan, so if you grab a seat by the huge windows, you can look out onto the busy city while you eat. The decor is also cool: black-and-white checkered floors and lots of historic photos on the wall. They also sell local beer in bottles, which is nice. read more

I know, I know, what kind of competition ends in a tie? That's boring, right? Well honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between the two Coney Dogs. Both hot dogs tasted like the standard mass produced franks and the chili at both places had a very similar color, consistency, level of spice and taste. I didn't try the other things on the menu, but it seemed like American had more options. So if you decide to go crazy go nuts and want to get something other than a Coney Dog, maybe American is your jam then.
