We ordered a beer, the house rock and rye mocktail (good but VERY expensive for a small soda $7), cheeseburgers (also good- the bun was great, the flavor was good, it could've used more fixings and was $21 with no sides so again, very expensive. My husband added bacon for $6), and shared a fry (again, expensive $8, but very good and a charnel side for sure) $56 for 2 burgers and 1basket of fries is STEEP. Food was good, not $56 good! I went for the burger and came away appreciating other food more. A group of us went for a friend's birthday. We made a reservation so no trouble getting a table. Our server was rather unique. Not a bad thing at all, but just had to mention that. Onto the food. I split a cottage pie and the infamous Grey Ghost burger add fries with a friend. The burger was very good. I'd even call it great. But was it the best I've had? No. It felt like it was missing a bit of seasoning because I wasn't that impressed by the patty. We added bacon as well which was good, but not sure it's needed. The fries were very good. Well salted and the perfect crisp you want. For over $30, I wanted more. Not in size but in taste. I actually liked the Little Ghost burger more. However, the cottage pie was quite good. Shepards pie with ground beef instead of lamb. The mashed potatoes were great and it was a very respectable portion. I would get that over the burger. Still, I'm glad I went and we all had a nice time. The service was above reproach and they carefully accommodate allergies, walk you through the menu, and provide a stellar experience. Our server, James, was phenomenal. Atmosphere is nice, decor is very cool, and the setting is intimate, but when it fills up, it is quite loud. Regarding accommodations, for our teen daughter, the chef went WELL beyond normal accommodations to modify the Steelhead Trout dish to allow her to enjoy what she called "the best fish I've ever had". He absolutely made her night. We all shared the Brussel Sprouts (w/ honey, lime, & chicken skin) and Octopus appetizers. The Brussels were heavenly and the octopus was flavorful and tender (very nicely prepared). Aside from the Steelhead entrée, my wife and son both had the Ribeye Cap w/ yaji, peanut, & kiwi. They couldn't stop raving about it. The pairing of kiwi with steak was delicious and creative! I ordered the Lobster dish and honestly, it was better than many top tier seafood restaurants I've visited. It featured tail & claw meat atop a crab cake with a citrus beurre blanc and crispy wontons. I'd go back just for this dish. For dessert, we tried the PB&J Napoleon, and found the berry sorbet to be ridiculously fresh and bursting with flavor. Portion sizes were just right. Everyone left well satiated, but not overly full. A solid 4.5. FINALLY made it to this place after years of being on the list. Went here with a friend for a birthday meal, and it was a solid if not spectacular time. AMBIENCE - definitely a hip spot, not too dark, not too light. the hosts were very friendly and accommodating as we hit some traffic on our way in and had to switch our reservations to 40 minutes later. We ended up being placed on the "veranda" which was an enclosed space with about 4-5 tables. They had heaters, but fortunately, it was warm enough that they were not needed. SERVICE - my friend made it well known that we were there for my birthday, but I'd like to think even without the birthday drop, we would have gotten great service. Our server was friendly, attentive and made a number of recommendations to help guide our dining experience. MENU - Grey ghost has a rotating menu, with a few items that our consistently featured (I'll talk about my burger later). An interesting array of starters including brussel sprouts and coconut shrimp as well as a great variety of main entrees. I feel like there was something for all tastes at this place. They also had a good variety of cocktails and mocktails. FOOD - We started off with shrimp tempura which had a tropical salad of some sort served with it. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the tropical salad really complimented it very well. We also decided to try their home made Rock and Rye (their take on Faygo's marquee drink of the same name). The Rock and Rye was decent, but if you want rock and rye, nothing beats the original. For our main dishes, a number of things caught our eye. including the lamb and ribeye, but we ended up going with their burger and a side of fries and their wild boar pappardelle. I've heard Grey Ghost has one of the best burgers in Detroit, and it did not disappoint. And you know we had put an egg on it and it was rocking. I don't know what the burger sauce they put on it was, but it seemed like a much, MUCH better executed big mac. The fries were great as well. The pappardelle was good, nothing mind blowing, but a solid entree in it's own right. I was curious how the burger here compares to the one at their sister restaurant (Little Ghost) and the host said the quality of meat used in the patty is better at Grey Ghost than little ghost. Guess I'm going to have to go there as well. OVERALL - definitely worth a visit. I'd say a good spot for a first date, or some other sort of special occasion. TLDR: We ran into a few bumps but the staff did everything they could to reconcile and most of the food was delicious! We started with oysters (asked for raw), Brussels, beef tartare and mussels. The broth in the mussels was very good. The lime toast was unique but enjoyed. The beef tartare was delicious. Good portions too. The Brussels had great flavor and were nice and crispy. Towards the bottom, way too much honey sauce though. For entrees, I got the filet, which was a great cut. Very velvety. The lasagna-like side dish was good. Too cheesy for me but my family loved it. My husband tried the spaghetti, unique and refreshing but not sure we would get it again. My FIL got the chicken liver sliders and said they were ok. My MIL got the fish and didn't like it but my husband said it was fine. (They comped the fish after her feedback though!) This was our first visit after hearing many great things so I was very excited to be surprised here for dinner! We had a reservation for our dinner date before seeing a show at LCA (which is only a short 5 minute walking distance), and Grey Ghost certainly delivered a meal of culinary excellence in a modern, yet simplistic atmosphere. The muted lighting gave the restaurant a relaxed, intimate setting which made the experience so much more enjoyable. Every staff member from greeting us at the door to the food runners to our wonderful server, Jenna, showed such passion and guest service. Jenna was personable, attentive, and gave helpful recommendations with the menu. We started with the brussels sprouts and mussels. It was evident in the flavors and the way the food is presented that there is a high level of attention to detail. The mussels were extremely fresh and the Thai basil cashew sauce was the perfect, savory-salty balance. The Brussels, however, blew us out of the water with the lime garlic glaze. For such a simple dish, enjoyed every crunch! Delicious! Given the special night out, we decided to splurge on the hanger steak and the filet, both medium rare and cooked perfectly. Sometimes I am reluctant to order filet due to price point and the hesitation of a small portion or having it cooked wrong- I am beyond glad I ordered their filet and I HIGHLY recommend. The generous cut was about 12oz, cooked to complete PERFECTION, and completely melted in our mouthes. The cheesy parsnip lasagna pairing was chef's kiss! While the hanger steak was less tender than the filet (hard to compare the two, really!) it was well-flavored and did not disappoint! The miso glaze that was on the hanger steak was absolute decadence, and will make you want to scrape every last bit off your plate. While the overall food and service experience is five-star, my only issue is with the dining layout. Besides a few stand-alone tables and one half-circle booth, much of the seating consists of the banquette and chair style (a bench on one side, chairs on the other). The placement of these tables felt crammed, making it difficult to get in and out of the seat without bumping or having to ask the neighboring table to scoot in. It's a slight detail, but giving guests a bit more privacy while dining and would elevate the comfort level considerably. read more

Grey Ghost is the type of restaurant you enjoy just being present in. I've dined at the bar, the dining room, and the veranda, and don't have a preference. The burger here is easily one of the best locally, and in general, I've had. The menu rotates frequently, but the burger is a mainstay. French fries are also a mainstay, however, the flavor of them changes every so often. The cannelloni alfredo is another delicious dish but, at the time of writing this review, is no longer on the menu. For the vibes and burger alone, Grey Ghost will always be one of my favorites. I really liked what my hubby ordered, the Dragonfly Jones (mezcal based drink) over mine (Inside Voice). My friend ordered the Greenseer- warning this drink is brown and savory (a VERY different & unusual cocktail) but with the right mindset, she really liked it after a few sips! The ambiance was nice, slightly upscale but casual and comfortable. Of course the table spacing can be a bit tight- oh well. Anyways, my friend LOVED the lamb chops- said they were probably The Best she's had! Wow! I love this place, it was decorated for the holidays and was super cozy. It had a Hogwarts vibe. We were thinking of doing the tasting menu but after asking the waiter, it seemed like a lot of the dishes were spicy (& I have an aversion). I am glad I asked though because the dishes didn't necessarily call out spicy ingredients on the menu. They have a unique selection of mocktails and we got the earl grey one- it was well balanced and delicious. I loved the ricotta tart, it was fresh and complex. We also enjoyed the chicory salad. I'd give it four stars except for the arrogant male host or maybe he was an assistant host. He completely ignored me when I walked in and allowed the hostess to seat me. Enjoyed several courses beginning with lamb tartare that tasted so right but felt wrong (eating raw lamb). It was a unique combination of minced lamb, sriracha sauce, puffed rice, pickles and mint. Picture an ahi tuna stack but lamb instead - lovely. Next up were the baked oysters; we are normally raw oyster types but the description was hard to pass up. They indeed smelled like a coney dog and tasted JUST like a coney dog. We probably wouldn't get them again but would encourage a group to try them just cause. On to mains... red snapper and short ribs. They were both pretty amazing. I really enjoyed the snapper and jerk flavors that came along with it. A nice portion and not heavy at all, as you can imagine for a fish dish. It was a huge chunk of short rib served with rice and pineapple rice cakes; a bit heavier of a dish, and fatty but SO tasty. Amazingly, we stuffed some dessert in too that I didn't capture a pic of. Jumped on the affogato trend and tried it for the first time with their homemade gelato + espresso. The espresso was jet fuel strong and great complement to the cream; the gelato could use a bit of improvement. Second was the crema catalana which essentially was like crème brûlée with a lemon flavor, brûlée top adorned with lavender sugar cookies. It was a large portion easily split by 2 or 3. Lovely atmosphere for date night, double date or small group. Interesting alcoholic bevs if you're into them but good alternatives if not. Our server was awesome, friendly and casual. read more

Immediately yes. I came in specifically for the burger, and it was everything I had hoped for. Their burger is amazing. I ordered it with an over-easy egg, and yes--the egg is a must. While I'm sure the burger would still be fire without it, the egg really takes it to the next level. Now, for the downside: they didn't have Sprite. Instead, they make their own lemon-lime soda in-house, and honestly, it was a no for me. It doesn't taste like Sprite or Mountain Dew at all--more like sparkling water with a splash of lemon juice. On top of that, it was $4, and they didn't offer to-go cups, so I basically wasted my money since I didn't finish it at the restaurant. Had such a great time at Grey Ghost Detroit. The food was seriously good. I ordered the duck and it was one of the best dishes I've had in a while. Super flavorful, cooked perfectly, and just one of those meals you keep thinking about after. We also got a couple cocktails and they were so good. Normally, I love a good cocktail but their mocktail list is amazing so I had two mock tails instead. I loved Back On Earth, which had earl grey, grapefruit, honey, pineapple, lemon and lavender cream. Gorgeous drink! I also had their refreshing Spa Water with cucumber, mint, honeydew, lime, and soda. My friend enjoyed her Pinky Promise cocktail. As our appetizer, we shared the pheasant tacos. The pheasant was delicious! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was served with waffle taco shells, which were innovative and interesting, but I personally didn't love this combination or texture. The shell was nice and crispy, but it fell apart easily. For our main course we split the Lamb Wellington, which was perfection. Wow! We also had the scallops. The scallops were perfectly cooked. Walked in on a Monday night with 4 people and were seated pretty quickly on the patio at our request. The first thing I want to mention is that the entire staff was awesome!! Everyone that we interacted with were very nice. Several different people brought out each of the many dishes we ordered and as we got them they described exactly what the dish was for us. Special shout-out to our server, Chance! We were not familiar with the menu and asked for suggestions on what to order and he easily described each drink and dish, it's history, and made our mouths water as he went down the line. I told him I did not like the taste of alcohol but wanted to try one of their signature drinks and he brought me out a "Pinky Promise" which was so cute and barely tasted of alcohol, just a fruity not too sweet drink and I loved it. My friend enjoys whiskey and really loved "Business Casual", she ended up ordering two of them that night. We started with the crab ravioli, green beans, and oysters. The crab ravioli was awesome and were served with wonton chips to mimic a crab rangoon. The green beans were coated in a peanut sauce and had naan crumbs sprinkled throughout which we loved. The raw oysters came with toppings already including gin mignonette and olives as they were a play on a dirty martini and it was delicious!! After we devoured those apps we decided last minute to put in an order of brussel sprouts before our entrees came out and Chance didn't even blink an eye when we asked. They came out within 5 minutes! We were shocked how easily they were able to get it out to us. Those were coated in a sweet glaze that really made the dish. Finally our entrees arrived and they looked stunning! We ordered the quail that was deboned and stuffed with a caesar salad type of mix, the lamb chops that came on a bed of orzo and hummus (mezza style), and the casarecce pasta. All tasted fantastic. We saw that there was affogato on the menu and wanted to try it and it was okay. The ratio of espresso to gelato was off for me but it wasn't too bad. We also ordered the bombolini which was a donut filled with dulce de leche sauce over horchata and it was delicious. They had cute little Grey Ghost matchbooks and stickers for guests to take on their way out. One of the stickers had a Detroit hat on the ghost which I really thought was cute and took one for myself. I ordered scallops this time, and asked them to serve it on the snapper set, and it was perfect. One of my friends got the snapper and it was also super delicious.
