    Sweet tea

When you first walk in the restaurant itself, it is nice and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Loved the ambiance and it is very clan in there. We did go on a Sunday because we are just in town for a basketball tournament. Plan ahead and make reservations. We did not make reservations and they told us an hour wait time but we were seated in less than 45 minutes. There is no parking, but plenty of parking lots available close by. Now the best part the food....we loved it all! My husband and son ordered sweet tea and they loved it! I ordered the smothered pork chops with red beans and rice, and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was so delicious and rich. The serving size for me was perfect because it was actually quite filling. Smothered pork chops were very tasty and seasoning was spot on and cooked just right. The red beans and rice was good and had a little spice to it. My husband had the three piece chicken with collard greens and potato salad. He said the chicken was fried perfectly and juicy. Collard greens are good, he don't need to add any seasoning. Potato salad was tasty! The best part about my husband's meal to me was the biscuit with the grape jelly butter!! I've had a biscuit with butter and grape jelly, but it's very never thought or heard of a grape jelly butter.... THAT WAS THE MOST AMAZING CONCOCTION IVE EVER HAD!! So whoever thought that should be served with the biscuits....you are amazing!!! Best thing ever!!! My son had the chicken and waffles with a side of Mac and cheese. He said he liked the chicken but he doesn't like anything spice and to him it was but I would say it's not. So he took the skin off and ate the chicken like that and loved that it was juicy and not dry. They gave him the same grape jelly butter for the waffles and syrup and he absolutely loved it!!! Again the whole grape jelly butter is the best idea ever!! I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Detroit, MI. It is a must!!! And the staff is super professional and friendly!!

Vibrant restaurant downtown near Tigers stadium with beautiful decor featuring historical black people and places. The food was good but expensive. Service was just ok. I had the shrimp and grits - $26 - came with five small shrimp. The number and size of the shrimp was unreasonable, but I enjoyed the sauce with thick chunks of veggies within as well as the grits. My son had the pancakes and I tried them and they were very tasty. Someone else had the fish dinner and it came with one fried fish filet. He was disappointed in this portion size also. The service was ok. The hostess was friendly and helpful. The woman at the bar was unfriendly and unwelcoming. Our server Aamiyah's service was satisfactory. She didn't check on us during the meal nor apologized when my meal was forgotten and was delivered about 7 minutes after everyone else's. My friend's food was served warm. Also, I would have appreciated being told that a 16.9 oz bottle of water would cost $7. This was egregiously overpriced. Nice place to try once - we were here visiting.

Came to Fixins on a Saturday and honestly it was a really frustrating experience. We were seated and ended up waiting about an hour for our food, and it never came. There was little to no communication from the staff about what was going on, which made it even worse because we were just sitting there with no updates. The service overall felt very unorganized and inattentive. We did receive the deviled eggs, and they were decent, but that ended up being the only thing we got the entire time. After waiting that long with no real explanation, we decided to just leave without eating anything else. I understand weekends can get busy, but an hour with no food and no clear communication just isn't acceptable. It really put a bad taste in our mouths, especially since we were looking forward to trying more from the menu. Definitely needs improvement when it comes to service and managing tables during peak hours.

I recently visited Fixins Soul Kitchen in Detroit and had a really great experience overall. The food was absolutely delicious and tasted like authentic, comforting soul food made with love. I ordered the fried chicken and sides, and everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the mac and cheese and greens were seasoned just right. The portions were also generous, so you definitely get your money's worth. The ambience was another highlight. The restaurant has a lively, upbeat vibe with music playing and décor that celebrates Detroit culture and Black history. It felt warm, welcoming, and energetic at the same time. It's the kind of place that's perfect for gathering with friends, celebrating something special, or just enjoying a good meal in a fun environment. The service was also very good. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we were comfortable throughout the visit. Our server checked in at the right times and was helpful with menu suggestions. Overall, the combination of great food, a vibrant atmosphere, and solid service made this a memorable dining experience. I would definitely recommend Fixins if you're looking for great soul food in Detroit.

An amazing soul food restaurant, lively, slightly loud but fun and very cultural atmosphere. The place Has plenty of room for all size parties. The service was excellent, our server Aramis was very polite, attentive, and friendly. The food was excellent. We ordered the deviled eggs appetizers and that was already an amazing start. Very rich and creamy, very delicious! I also recommend the collard greens and the chicken and waffles. Everything tasted as I expected from the seasonings and flavors of some good 'soul food Fixins' lol, see what I did there haha. I can't wait to go back and try more items on their menu!

Love the location and the vibes in Fixins, especially the interior decor, the space is really nice. Service-wise, don't come if you're in a hurry, they're pretty slow. It's not just been my experience; my wife and others have told me it's always pretty much the same. But the food is DEFINITELY worth it. I especially loved the smothered chicken. The fish nuggets are delicious as well. And the dessert is great, we devoured the red velvet cake. We'll definitely be back, we just always make sure we have plenty of time!

The decor is awe strikingly Black in the absolute best way! They keep a long wait and I liked that there was plenty of seating for guests waiting to be seated. Everybody was friendly and such a vibe from the hostess to our waitress. We order some of everything and it was all so good!

I've been wanting to check this place out since they opened about a year ago. Finally was able to go yesterday and it was everything people hyped it up to be. I truly enjoyed the food, service and drinks. I love the old school pictures on the wall, gives it a nice nostalgic vibe. All the food we had was excellent and well seasoned. The Blue Kool-Aid was perfect, not too sweet, just enough. I also enjoyed the chicken dinner I had. All the sides I had (Mac & cheese, greens and yams) were sooo good. I had no complaints at all. I appreciated the service from being to end. Our server was so sweet and helpful. She really added to us enjoying our experience. She also gave us a little history lesson of the owners and the expansions that are soon to come for the restaurant. I definitely will be back to try more items off the menu.

My first time in Detroit and what a surprise to find such a gem right across the street from my hotel. It was a Monday afternoon, and my room wasn't quite ready yet, so I popped over to Fixins for a late lunch at 2:00 PM and it was PACKED! An hour wait. On a Monday. At 2 PM! I couldn't believe it, but I figured this place must be pretty special. I had the good sense to make a reservation for Thursday, the day I was departing Detroit. When I arrived, my table was ready and I was met by Danny (Danyelle) who greeted me warmly and told me the history of Fixins. She also recommended the fried chicken. The service was great and the cuisine even better. Delicious fried chicken, black eyed peas, collards, grits and iced tea. Everything was incredibly flavorful. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with Motown memorabilia and gives a wonderful visual shout out to Detroit.

Love love loved everything I ordered. After a long day of traveling it was nice to sit down, read a book while enjoying a drink. I started with the SIDECAR, if you like Hennessy you will love this. It was so smooth and delicious. I ordered the fish nuggets to enjoy in restaurant and loved the tartar sauce didn't love the spicy remoulade that came with them. I got gumbo to take with me to my room because I had work to finish. DELICIOUS AUTHENTIC GUMBO for the win! The atmosphere was nice, very busy and staff were attentive and pleasant. If you have an opportunity to be in Detroit, add this to your "must got to" list

A new black owned establishment with great decor, staff, and food! It was flavorful. I do think once is enough though. It's in the downtown area and can be considered over priced for soul food. I wasn't impressed with the fish, but the sides were on point! Just right. I often get yams because that's my dessert too. These didn't disappoint. Mac and cheese was great and tasted good heated up.

Music was fire, waitress was amazing, food was absolutely delicious! Wish the chicken had more seasoning but otherwise it was fried perfectly, the greens had so much flavor, Mac n cheese was tasty and the oxtails were melt in your mouth !!!!!

Nate and I stopped in on our most recent visit to Detroit and had a lovely experience. The space is tucked away but had a surprising amount of outdoor space--we were there in January but I'd love to come back in the summer. We were greeted right away and given a spot near the bar. The menu includes cocktails, lots of wine, and several tasty food options. It was quite busy inside, so it took a bit of time for our server to come over to us, but we weren't in a rush. They had ten cocktails on their list and I tried the bullet proof soul and Nate got the negroni alla perra. The ingredients list for some of the cocktails include things I've never heard of, but at a place like this, I just know it's going to be good. Our drinks were perfectly balanced and very tasty. We also ordered the mortadella sandwich to split--this was delicious. It was pretty messy, but worth it. It was perfectly toasted and full of mortadella. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I would love to try more of the food options. Can't wait to visit again!

Downtown Detroit definitely feels different now, and the crowd has shifted a bit, but none of that took away from what The Standby is. That alleyway magic is still there. Walking in honestly felt like a little blast from the past, and it made me really happy. It ended up being a highlight of my trip home. The food was phenomenal. The crab was so buttery, the waffle situation was amazing, and the overall execution across the menu was impressive. We ordered a lot, basically half the menu and everything hit. * Short rib plate: delicious, rich, and comforting * Chicken schnitzel with curry mustard: WOW. Juicy, crunchy, fresh, perfectly seasoned. The curry mustard was everything, and that little pepper on top? 10/10. This was hands down my favorite dish. * Drinks: They had brand ambassadors for Wild Turkey, giving out free Old Fashioneds, which was honestly the perfect touch. We also had a small ounce pour of a mezcal that was beautifully smoked, super aromatic and smoky in the best way. Service was great too, we had two different servers, and both were attentive and kind. The only miss for me personally was the pastrami salmon toast. I wanted to love it so badly because I love salmon and I love smoked fish, but it just wasn't for me. I actually sent it back (which I felt bad about). I think the slight sweetness, (possibly from the tomato jam)threw it off for my palate. I was craving something fully savory with a bit of acidity. I think a thicker, crunchier toast and a more umami-forward, citrusy or pickled element might have taken it where it needed to go. That said, I know pastrami-style salmon is a thing right now, it just didn't work for me. Everything else? Truly amazing. The Standby will forever be a place I come back to when I'm home. I'm excited to return, see what's new on the menu, and relive that magic again. Highly recommend. 10 out of 10. Will absolutely be back.

Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar.
