Stopped here while making our way to Buffalo, NY. A quick search of Yelp showed that everything in this town is a diner, so we randomly chose American Diner as our lunch spot. It's not much to look at from the outside, and the interior is about the same. Upon entering, we definitely got the "local vibe." It didn't feel like You-Don't-Belong-Here. It felt more like You-Aren't-From-Here. Not unfriendly, just an acknowledgement that we were strangers. Seating was tight so the 5 of us added an extra chair to a booth meant for 4. Our server was pleasant. The ladies room was super clean and very nice, but Big Daddy said the men's room left a lot to be desired. Our food came out hot. The burgers were so-so. Definitely not the best I've ever eaten. But the fries were good, so that helped make up for it. Big Daddy really enjoyed his fish & chips, and Kid #2 said the chipped beef gravy was delicious. We probably would try someplace different if we were traveling through again, but overall it was pretty good. read more

This place is well named. It is what comes to mind when you think of the classic American Diner. It is a haven for comfort food. From the simplicity of the edifice to the no-frills, hometown, 1960's appearance of the dining room, this place is a throwback...in a good way. We stopped here because it was on our route. It looked like a good, solid choice based on the description and the reviews. And it looked like a choice that was not too expensive. The location was truly what you could term "roadside" on US 322, because it was indeed right next to the road. The exterior appearance was certainly not elegant, but the building was in good shape. The interior was a bit cozy, and the layout was significantly wider than it was deep as you would expect with a small, hometown diner. The decor and furnishings were simple, though certainly adequate. We were seated right away. The service was very good as our server attended to us right away. She was very efficient and our food was delivered rather quickly after our order. The menu offered classic mid-Atlantic American comfort fare. Items such as burgers, a variety of sandwiches, pork chops, baked ham and liver and onions were featured. My wife opted for a simple BLT accompanied by chips, which was quite good. I chose the Baked Fish with mashed potatoes and a starter salad. We're both watching calories and these were great options for that. The value was excellent. The final bill with food, tax and tip (we had water to drink) was $13.00 per person. I would try this place again if circumstances allow. read more

We're just driving thru and saw this place - why not? Filled with chatting local folks but quite welcoming to out of towners. Had breakfast and the food was fine - simple and fresh. Such a nice waitress (short blonde hair and glasses) and amazingly cheap prices. If we ever drive thru Phillipsburg again - will stop by! read more

Hungry for a real burger so this being the only local place we knew that had real burgers decided to go. They had batter fish so got that instead. Nice & crispy & tasty, not too greasy. It was easily the best fish we've ever had and we try the all. Coleslaw is diced small, not big shreds so it's easy to eat (one of mom's requirements) The mac & cheese appeared to be made with the canned cheese, a shortcut that always disappoints & didn't have much flavor. We ordered to go & may have considered eating in except this is a tiny dining room and I found it disturbing that the employees on the floor were not wearing masks. They tell me since they arent regulated by the PLCB they dont have to, but Im not sure how people who dont serve alcohol are less likely to be contagious? Anyway, I will definitely go back but will wait till the danger has passed. read more

Great home-cooking kind of joint. Had the home fries with peppers and onions and a blueberry pancake. The serving of potatoes could've been a meal in and of itself. There were blueberries in each bite of pancake which was fluffy with a crisp edge. My dining partner enjoyed the BLT and fries. Their homemade desserts cannot be missed! The pumpkin pie was scrumptious and the strawberry cake so moist and filled with juicy morsels of fruit. read more

The only thing was great there was Friendly Staff. We went there for dinner, the food was not so great, we were very disappointed with it. Our dinner was Dried and tasted like it was cooked in microwave it was not like it was home cooked like it said it should be. This restaurant was told by someone who lived there to go here it was told by her its the best place to eat and its all home cooked. Sadly that day it was not. read more

American Diner has great all around food. The ribs are the best in the area. Most desserts are home made and delicious. Rarely is there a long wait time to get your food (good and hot), even when busy. The waitresses are the best in the area. After going there a few times, they know what you want before you order it.
