I cannot recommend American Flags & Cutlery enough! Before upgrading my kitchen knives, I brought my old blades here to be sharpened, and they did an incredible job bringing the edges back to life. Eventually, I decided to upgrade, and I've since bought several things from the owner, Bryan--including a prep knife, paring knife, carving set, tomato and cheese knife, and several pairs of kitchen shears. The entire experience was outstanding, and the value is unbeatable for this level of quality. Bryan is incredibly nice, helpful, and highly knowledgeable. He took the time to answer all my questions and guided me to the perfect blades without any high-pressure sales tactics. The shop has a great, welcoming atmosphere and an impressive selection. I would like to start off by giving this stores customer service and the lady Cassandra Blaile a one star review. My son, husband and I googled ourselfs to this location to get my son some very pricey knifes and upon entering the gentleman at the entrance was happy spirited smiling and providing excellent customer service and attitude!! The customers he was helping were white colored skinned and ofcourse im married to a white colored skinned man and I was the only one of darker complexion and the lady was quickly rude I guess the questions we were asking were too much for her or maybe my skin color. I did not want to get anymore angrier for the way she responded to me so I asked the gentleman if the knife was for sale or not because we were interested in purchasing the one in the display case and again I was answered smartly... like he said anything we have out is all we have!! Didn't even try to listen to us, I stepped back and let the lighter colored people like my son and husband finish the transaction!! Because I was super uncomfortable at that point NOT ONLY FOR THE WAY I WAS TREATED!! LET ALONE SPEND OVER A HUNDRED DOLLARS!!! AFTER I WAS TREATED LIKE POOP FOR THE COLOR OF MY SKIN!! Anyway I was reading the door as it states help shop local businesses or whatever. I live a few blocks away from this store, never visited until today and we won't be back ever!!! might as well put a WHITES ONLY!!! Sign. Love stopping in anytime I'm in downtown Ventura. I live in Newbury Park and, although I haven't bought a knife, yet, they carry my favorite candles by Zippo. The staff is always so friendly and welcoming when I stop in and they have the coolest little gift items for military and camping enthusiasts. Plus, they have participated in the wine walks so it's just another reason to stop by and say hi to Bryan and his staff. I cannot believe I never noticed this shop in the 34 years I've been a native to Ventura. It kinda looked like part of the next door shop I guess?? Bryan was very helpful. Due to recent events, I've been wanting to replace a very faded and stained flag, but the issue is the pole width for the mount we have on the house. Luckily, the owner recommended finding a dowel at Lowe's. We bought a new flag at the shop, managed to find a fairly close in width sized dowel I will just have to sand down a tad, and the top cap twisted right off the old pole. Once the dowel is stained, we'll zit tie the flag to it. read more

Great store to check out and buy some of the latest and greatest in knives. Whether you're looking for a life for kitchen use, camping, personal protection, etc...they have it all. The new owner Bryan really knows his stuff and can help you find what you're looking for. He's got a ton of inventory and can get you what you need even if he doesn't have it today. The store also sells flags and zippo lighters, among some other really cool stuff and is worth checking out. Great location, great service, and a really cool experience. Ok, on the plus side: There is a pretty good selection of knives here and the store is very clean and well laid out... Also, I think the old owner that produced some bad reviews in the past has sold the biz. The lady I worked with today was pretty knowledgable and helpful. On the other hand... I paid 2X as much as I could find elsewhere. I'm OK paying a 20%....even 30% premium for local and also being in a somewhat "touristy" area....but come on...100%? I even asked at the time for 10% off and it was refused. Caveat Emptor - I should have done more research beforehand. read more

Best knife store and its local! They had the knife I was looking for where some the big box stores didn't

I went into the store just kill time while I waited for my take out order. The man was sitting down in the back where asked him if I needed any help. I said "I'm just looking, thank you ." A few seconds later he was watching my every move. It made me feel very uncomfortable. While there a few items I had been searching for for a few months I didn't buy anything. After my food was ready I asked my girlfriend to go in just to see if he would stare her down also. She told me he did in fact watch her like a thief. A few seconds after she walked out of the store so did he and he continued to stare at us. I understand wanting to protect your store but there's a less intimidating way to to so. read more

I went in the store and introduced myself to the lady behind the counter. I explained that I was in a basic culinary class and was interested in a set of knives. She went through the manufacturing process and pulled out all the knives that fit my needs. She said the important thing was how they felt in your hand. She could have easily pushed the more expensive, but she focused on the comfort and customer satisfaction. Even though its over 100 miles away, I will return for my cutlery needs. This is absurd, ive tried to visit this place 3 different times between 10am and 3pm only to be greated by an obnoxious note in the door explaining the random reason they've closed today. Came in with the intention of buying a Kershaw for everyday use, a decent sharpener since my old Kershaw is in desperate need of love, and maybe a Swiss Army knife because everyone should have one. There was one other couple in the shop when we came in and the girl behind the counter was helping them out so I kept myself occupied looking around until she was available to help me. Once I had seen everything there was to see, I just stood at the counter waiting for assistance. Now, I fully understand that the other couple was being helped, but when a few minutes had passed and the girl behind the counter couldn't even glance my way let alone acknowledge my existence, I figured it was no longer worth spending the extra money to buy from the shop I usually go to when in Ventura. We frequent this shop for U.S. Flags to fly. We are never disappointed. This store is very well stocked. I have also purchased a walking stick in the past. Never a bad experience! Need new kitchen knives, and learned much about the variety of knives from Ashley. She tirelessly showed us similar knives of each brand to instantly compare. We ended up buying more than we came for with a lovely, unique steak knife set, too. We support our local businesses.
