Nothing predictable about us. I see that I wrote a review for Hats Unlimited last year on 1/2/24. This year, Dear Hubby and I visited Ventura Harbor Village on New Year's Day, also. Always have to stop in the hat store - it's a rite of passage! This time I didn't find anything to purchase. I was intent on finding a replacement pair of mittens for our granddaughter, but they didn't have anything in the right color scheme. They were down to dark colors, and she's into pink these days. The staff members were friendly and welcoming on a holiday when they might have preferred being somewhere else. I took a look at the "No Headache" visors which I like to wear, but wasn't enticed by the current colors/pattens they have in stock. I'll be back the next time, and hopefully something colorful and flattering will catch my eye. Always worth a browsing session! read more

Oh, do I have so many memories at this place! Harbor Hatter is iconic in case you didn't know! My grandparents took us here as kids and obviously I didn't get enough so we're still going! I love the colorful, overflowing and unique selection of hats (who doesn't want to walk around the harbor in a boat captains hat? Or an oversized foam cowboy hat?! Psssh! Check your priorities). The service has always been amazing. Took my sisters here to get birthday hats and the counter person was engaging, helpful and gave great feedback. Overall "good" visit but not great. I thought the hat selection was good. I was visiting the shop with my in-laws and they both ended up buying hats they were quite happy with. Staff was polite to us during our visit but not overly friendly and did not go out of their way at all for us. Did answer the one question we had, and the store is small so an employee (the only employee) was easy to find. Then when we were ready to pay, the one lady was going on break and another was coming in and we sat around waiting and waiting while neither acknowledged us while they went over what was going on with the store and what needed to be done on the next shift etc. If not helping the customers right away, they should have at least spoken to us and advised it would be just a minute as they finished up their conversation. Anyway, it didn't feel customer-focused at all and for that reason, I would probably not come back on my own. Hats seemed nice quality and average/fair priced for a touristy area of Ventura. read more

Love this store and have purchased a number of items here. However, yesterday I went in specifically to purchase a Christy's fedora as a gift. After trying it on again I decided I needed one too! I was ready to drop my hard earned $300 only to be told there were no hat boxes! THAT, my friends was a deal breaker for me! This place is the Bermuda triangle! I can't wander through the harbor shops without stopping by the Harbor Hatter and trying on tons of hats. Want to be a princess? They have your hat. Know a pirate? Get his new hat here. What do you wear to church on Sunday? No problem. There is a church hat here. Even the viking in your family can find a new horned helmet here. For me, this time I needed a smashable, packable, somehow casual but Napa-style hat to wear for a wine-tasting trip. Glad of an excuse to stop in, I headed with an entourage of family to the hat shop. Apparently they were happy to have a hat-trying-on-extravaganza excuse, too. First time in store today at 12 noon and most likely last. Found hat and it had no tag. Only one left. Approached cashier to ask for price. Told her I didnt see another one on the shelf. She stomped over to shelves and found one in another color and said.."Its $34.85..you want it?" There was absolutely nothing friendly about her. Told her I would think about it. As I meandered through store I could hear her complaining to another customer how they never got her additional help. The hat I wanted sells on Amazon for $10 more so I decided to just purchase it. I approached the register. There was an uncomfortable 5 min of scilence as I stood there with her saying nothing and not even giving me eye contact. She obviously knew I was purchasing because she went to the similar hat and took the skew # off of it. Rang item up and told me the balance. I handed her the money. She gave me my change..again..no words exchanged or eye contact and went back to doing what she was doing behind the register. As a business owner myself, employees like this impose a risk... store was busy and without even looking up at the "floor," merchandise could easily walk out. Also, such a lack of even a simple smile or hello makes customers feel unwelcomed in the store. Wont be going back. read more

I informed the shop employee that I'm disabled and he (unlawfully) said that I needed to prove it to him, so I went and got my letter from the California Department of Public Health that lists reasons why some people with disabilities are exempt from mask mandates. He then told me that maybe my husband in a wheelchair (who hadn't even come inside but he'd seen him out front with me) had a medical condition that prevented him from wearing a mask, but he didn't believe I did. That level of ignorance about disabilities is unacceptable, and being a year and a half into COVID isn't an excuse for that. I'll also mention that for the first 5 minutes I was in the store before he said something to me, his mask was below his nose. Even still when he told me I needed to be wearing one. Two women also walked up halfway through my conversation with the employee and one got right in my space saying that it's not discrimination to ignore the California Department of Public Health guidelines for people with disabilities because there's a mask sign on the door, and the employee didn't even attempt to enforce any social distancing guidelines even though I'm unable to wear a mask. Before all that started I was looking at sunglasses, which they had quite a few of, but they were almost all polarized and there wasn't much variety. I was also shopping for a hat, but the women's hats all had a very large circumference and didn't fit well, and were overpriced. It definitely felt like a tourist trap type of shop. I wouldn't have spent money there after that anyway, and thankfully there are plenty of great little shops there that don't discriminate against people with disabilities. read more

I am very happy with my purchase and will return in the future. I almost did not go because of the negative comments. I'm glad I went. I walked in with my uncle that was from out of town and the lady working the counter (I assume she's the owner) asked my uncle where he was from. Once he responded she laughed and called him a "loser." Upon hearing this response, I turned around and looked at her. She then asked me if I heard what she said and I replied no, hoping she would repeat herself in case I misunderstood what she said. When she never responded back, my uncle then said that he wanted to hear what she had said. The lady hesitated to respond, then tried to casually play off what she said like it's no big deal to insult her customers. She stated that she was from the same state as him and gives everyone that's from there a hard time...In any case, I will never come back here and I won't recommend any of my friends to shop here too. Yes they had a good selection to choose from, the bad.....well if you are at least a large then there is much, but if you are a small...your choices are quite limited. The even worse... the customer service. The woman working the counter is not only RUDE, but she is not helpful, would not get off her ASS to assist in any way.....Did not greet us cordially as we walked in and there were no other customers in the store. She minimally pointed out where the selections for men were and said the smalls were under the larger sizes. It was clear from our rumbling through...that the sizes were limited. No offer of assistance was made. We did find a hat, although we'd have preferred several others so we essentially settled..... having driven 45 miles to get there in the first place. I was in this store on Saturday and purchased a hat. I returned the next day (today) at about 3:00pm to return it. I was not aware there were no returns -- exchanges only. I was disappointed in that, but did not express it directly to the sales associate. I expressed it to my boyfriend who was with me. I merely said "well that's kind of silly". There were two ladies working, one was a younger lady who was nice, but the older one was not. I did not get her name, but as we were leaving, the older lady said to the younger one "what's her problem?" This really angered me. No sales associate should ever talk about a customer that way, especially to their back. I will not be shopping at this store anymore, and I will not recommend it to any of my family or friends. That lady should NOT be working in customer service. The hats are awesome, but the customer service was horrible. read more

One hat in particular was too small in a medium and too large in a large so the super helpful employee helped me by adding padding under the brim to create the perfect fit. This is a fun and interesting store. The staff ("Tuesday") is very knowledgeable and helpful. She went out of her way to answer my questions on vintage hat styles. They have a wide selection of hats and accessories, all very reasonably priced and conveniently displayed. Anything in hats, they have. If you don't see it, ask. I can't believe the crass and unprofessional behavior of the store clerk today. When I was looking at the hats, which I was going to purchase, but wanted to see other colors, I was told, "I hope you are not messing up my display since you don't know what you are doing". The store missed a sale of a Tilley hat and a visor today. I have bought several hats from this store in the past, however, I will never buy anything else from this store again.
