Searched Yelp for happy hour locations and the American Sardine Bar sounded interesting so I made my way to the bar. I walked in and seated myself across from the bar. I ordered a cocktail, wings, sardine slider, salt pepper fries ( the dill pickle dip is absolutely amazing), and a the ripper dog. The food and cocktail were okay. Surprised and delighted by the happy hour menu and overall experience at ASB. Opted to go prior to hopping on the Broad Street Line for a Phillies game and enjoyed their happy hour menu of food and bevs. You can get a really delish meal for around $20 during their HH. I want to go back and try the hot dog and tomato sandwich (seasonal) but what I did try was incredible. Sliders, toasts, pickled eggs, and a tasty vodka cocktail. Sit out on the patio for an extra special experience: this spot is a gathering place for Philadelphians of all neighborhoods and POVs. Quintessential spot that I am grateful to have nearby. Cool spot with a big bar to hangout at. Many tables as well and there is an upstairs, also a patio. Food menu is very interesting, an assortment of all different things for differing tastes. Good prices too, especially for some of the happy hour bites. Tried the rutabaga Caesar salad and it was surprisingly good! Very crispy fresh greens, great dressing, and some sardines on top. This little place has been around for a while now and it's a cool place to be. Their menu is eclectic in a good way with all the sardines you might want but also good sandwiches and comfort food. I love Sardines so I decided to try this out just for the name. It's a Saturday at noon when they open, there is already a lot of people waiting to get in. The bar is in an old building in a pretty hipster neighborhood. They have a decent wine selection. The menu is of course revolved around Sardine. It's smart since there is not much prepping needed. All enthusiastic aside, I only ordered the Danish mushroom soup. It was piping hot and delicious. Definitely on the heavier side though. Over all pretty good neiboughood bar! read more

Chill spot located in Point Breeze. Parking wasn't too hard to find on a weekend afternoon. The sardine board was good and the tin can sardine added a nice touch. When I first moved to Philly I looked at apartments in Point Breeze and the realtor mentioned Sardine Bar as one of the best spots in the neighborhood. I unfortunately didn't check it out all these years...until recently. First, the vibe is great. First floor and outside are great setups. I really like the lawn chairs and nice setup outside. I certainly had some reservations on a restaurant that prides itself on its sardines. But in the end it was a pretty good option for sitting outside on a not too hot day. We had to get the sardine sliders. They were on the smaller end, which explains why they're only $3. I was pleasantly surprised by the fish, actually, and the toppings were a nice flavor. Creamy but not too much so. I think toasting the bread would make an exponential addition. We got the crab romesco toast, as this sounded interesting and was a method of sauce we weren't so familiar with. This was fine. The flavoring was overall good but truly the portion of crab was lacking. We, as well as the other two tables immediately next to us, also got the pineapple habanero wings. These were pretty good wings. The habanero certainly snuck up on me. It doesn't come with a dipping sauce but the ranch offered was clutch. The beer selection was a nice variety. They have cocktails too, but we didn't venture into those. I didn't go to the bar area until paying the check but it was much grungier than I was expecting. The seating area outside was so pleasant for the weather we had (simple lawn chairs and a simple table, nothing fancy). What a hole jn the wall! I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this bar. The ambiance was bustling yet casual for a night of drinks and good food. Service was excellent! We ordered the Sardine platter, Sardine Sliders, the wedge salad, and onion rings. -Sardine platter was delicious especially the squid ink olive tapenade. The smoked trout was also delicious. Wow, what happened to this place? I ordered the pastrami and Swiss. I should have known I was in trouble when it wasn't cut in half. The chef had to know that a good portion of the pastrami was inedible and I couldn't cut through it with a steak knife. No professional chef would serve that. You could see that the meat hadn't been trimmed properly and it was inedible that way but you served it anyway. Just horrible. You lost a customer. I won't be back. read more

The American Sardine Bar has been on my list for a while - I found them when I was doing a google search for pickled eggs in Philadelphia ---just I was hoping I could find a closer place to purchase this delicacy lol. And then I saw all the sardine themed items on the menu and I knew I needed to come here. I had the sardine sliders, the onions rings (this order was bc I saw them going by to another diner and they looked fab- and they were!) and the pickled eggs. I'm already planning when I will go back to get more of those sliders and onions rings. Ironically, I prob wouldn't get the pickled eggs here again. I love pickled eggs and these were not pickled enough and were too peppery compared to the farms where I buy them. Everyone who worked here was friendly and great. Years and years ago I lived at 19th and Federal. I remember a time before the Sardine bar. Even now it's kind of an island out there. I've been here a bunch over the years and went again tonight. I was really impressed to see their prices are still decent. Everyone else has jacked their $$$ post COVID. Here you can still get a huge BBQ tofu Bah Mi for $14. Which is what I did! If you're dining in you can go courtyard, upstairs, downstairs. Seems like they have servers designated to each area which is really nice. I think it ensures each area is taken care of. Got a riff on an Old Fashioned that I believe used Mezcal and a Cava. The cocktail was excellent and the bartender was incredibly knowledgable on the menu, having offered the suggestion the first place. Got a Daikon Caesar salad that was prepared perfectly, perfectly fresh tasting ingredients with two sardines that weren't overpowering. The crispy chicken sandwich was tender on the inside and crispy on the outside and the olive oil spice cake (tho not overwhelming in spice flavor) was the perfect end to the meal. I love sardines and anchovies but they are hard to find in restaurants because I feel like generally people have an aversion to them. I'm happy I found a place that serves them so I can go eat them (even alone, if my pals feel a type of way towards fish) when the mood strikes. Eating sardines gives me nostalgia and it's interesting to see such a simple dish be elevated to restaurant quality. At the bar I also enjoyed the holiday drinks, especially the tiramisu martini. It was sweet and smooth! However my bad for pairing it poorly haha. The ambience is cozy, very fitting of an American style bar with slightly dim lights. The food here is delicious. Vibes are super chill and relax, and the drinks are flowing when I saw that the menu had a fish charcuterie platter, I had to have it. It was so flavorful, nice, pickled veggies, crisp, sourdough bread, smoked fish dips, and of course sardines. The wedge salad was also so good. It was refreshing and crunchy while also being filling this is a great spot to sit outside and enjoy the weather with a beer or head to the bar for some playful banter with a cold one. My friend and I came to American Sardine Bar for outdoor dining during COVID-19 and had a great experience! We each got a beer (good selection both on draft and in cans). We split the Salt and Pepper Fries with Pickle Dip, which were soooo good. I could eat that pickle dip straight. I got the Sicilian Chickpea Fritter Hoagie (house made chickpea patty fritters, Calabrian tomato pesto, shaved sharp provolone, arugula, & balsamic glaze on a toasted Aversa hoagie roll). We were nearby and decided to finally give this spot a try. We love sardines and bars- so why not? I won't lie- it took a few times circling the block for us to find parking- but we were successful. We ordered the tinned platter (no photo) but it was very good. Pickled veggies, smoked fish dip, herring in oil, everything was tasty. The salad was delicious too- dressed perfectly. I eat ahi tuna often, typically in a salad -not usually as a burger but figured it would be fine served over lettuce. I couldn't eat it- it was served cold and just too rare in burger form for me. Next time I see an ahi burger on the menu I'll ask a few more questions. We thoroughly enjoyed what we ordered and it turned out to be plenty of food. Our first trip to American Sardine Bar was fun. Ther vibe is great and they have heat lamps for when the weather gets cold. We ordered a bahn mi, chicken sandwich, and fries. Food was good overall but two things led me to dock a star. One the salt and pepper fries were too salty. I know the name says salt in it but this was way too salty. We were with friends who are regulars and they said this was not the normal way the fries taste. However the pickle dip which came with the fries was delicious. The sandwiches both were great, however the pickle which came with them was super spicy and this led to our tongues being numb for a solid 5 mins. There is a varied drink menu with many beer options. We had a fun time and will be back. We heard the menu changes seasonally so we are looking forward to seeing what else they offer. read more
