A very pleasant experience here on a Wednesday night. I've been coming here for the past 20 years and it is still delivering good quality and service. Our steaks were cooked perfectly to medium, and the sides were also very delicious. The number 12 has always been my favorite steak and chicken tenders with a tasty sauce. It was okay... Decided to try here after passing by it for years. Inside was large with plenty of seating. The menu reminds me of a cafeteria listing. The desserts are already out in plastic take-out containers. I ordered a medium porterhouse steak 13oz. It was okay, not seasoned very well. A bit of gristle and a little tough to cut, very skinny. Not all what I was expecting. The staff seemed apathetic. No explanation of how their system works and what stations to stop at to get drinks/main dishes. The best thing was the price. This place is a throwback. When you walk in the decor and booths are reminiscent of the old family oriented restaurants that made good food for great prices. We ordered the ribeye and steak and tenders combo. We asked for medium well and got slightly done. But it was delicious! The potato came with tons of butter and once I dropped the sour cream I was in heaven. The tenders are good but come with a sauce that tasted like sweet and sour. The fries were fresh. Good food, bad service. Salad bar was closed and waitresses will not come up to you and ask you if you would like something. I asked them if I could have butter and they said they would come to my table, I finished my food and they never came. The Waitresses were all rude to every customer. Don't let the name fool you, this place isn't American and it isn't a Steak House. The place is practically a cafeteria, with the main difference being the prices as much higher than you'd expect from cafeteria food, a small simple sandwich will run you over ten dollars and will likely be worse than something you can find at a Subway restaurant a block away for half the price. While I haven't actually seen the steak here, I passed by it and it looks like something that came out of a freezer, pre-cooked perhaps in a warehouse hundreds of miles away. Seriously, I don't really understand why they put the word "steak house" in the name with all things considered, sure its catchier than their previous two names Bonanza and a Family Affair but its incredibly misleading. You'd think with their high prices, they'd at least have a decent staff, right? well, their staff is probably worse than whatever you'd find at the shadiest McDonald's. I'd have to repeat the name of my order several times and even then they'd find some way to get something minor like the soda wrong. Not to say they don't work hard because they put a lot into the food preparation but I feel like for the price I'm paying for my food, American Steakhouse should at least hire workers that can understand enough english to take my order. The food itself, like something you'd find out of a cafeteria, was fairly inoffensive but nothing memorable or distinct. For the amount of money you are paying, you deserve better. The place advertises heavily on low-budget local cable channels such as News 12 with a theme song that seems straight out of the '80s and a video game caliber 3D animated mechanical bull that throws a basketball into a hoop. This commercial almost is "so bad its good" and its perhaps the only thing the location has going for it, luckily you can at least hear the theme song in all its cheesy glory on the website for the place, you'd probably enjoy it more than anything they have at the place... read more

I've been to this steakhouse since I was a kid. Now that I am an adult I came back to this steakhouse. Well the burger wasn't as flavorful as I remembered. It was bland and not much too it. The atmosphere and decoration is the same as I remembered. It's an okay steak house but overall I came for the memories and to try out the food again. They do have weekday specials which is nice and they do accept credit and debit cards. They have a buffet style salad bar which is nice. Years ago back in the early 90's time period, when I was living in Norwalk, this steakhouse was my place to be with friends, family,e.t.c.. Good steak and fries combo with endless shrimp basket,e.t.c....As I made my return to this place not so long ago when I visited Norwalk, the quality of the food and the place in general has went down south to hell......The chicken soup broth is watery with no taste, my fries was cold, not even well cooked and my steak was so rubbery that I needed to dig in deep to cut my steak (Should of brought a saw or something). As a conclusion, this is not even a restaurant that I once remembered years ago, but more like a cheap cafeteria with the worst customer service that can't even speak English well...Trash restaurant in the highest order!! read more

I went to the American Steakhouse for the 1st time yesterday after passing it on Conn. Ave. hundreds of times. A good friend of mine who frequents AS invited me to go & I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered Sirloin Tips, (requested-medium rare) with the included side order, in this case baked potato. The food was very good as the tips were tender, juicy & cooked as requested. The baked potato was also tasty as was the accompanying garlic bread. The portion size was adequate. What was really tasty were the potato and macaroni salads from the included buffet and the rice was also well prepared. Note that this is a "cafeteria-style" restaurant without much ambiance but in all fairness AS does promote the restaurant as a casual family style/oriented place. Also note that my companion's order, steak tips, was not cooked to the desired level, medium-well, he requested and the person in charge gladly and quickly rectified the problem which indicated good customer service--very important to me. Overall AS was clean, the staff attentive, the prices fair and the food good tasting. My only complaint & I know this sounds ridiculous is that I wish they had a brand name ketchup available instead of the one (generic?) they have available. I will definitely repeat. P,S, believe me when I tell you, a review of a food establishment coming from me like this is rare as I am extremely conscious of the goings on in a restaurant & am quick to criticize for what I see as many restaurants simply ripping us off. Went to this restaurant... walked in.. no hostess to greet you and waited a few minutes... then decided to try to seat myself but stepped on something greenish gray and slimy on the rug near the entrance and front desk. I will assume it was something regurgitated and left on the floor as a warning to not eat here. ... I think... luckily since no one came to offer a table or assistance... and I walked around and made eye contact with several employees, I decided they were basically telling me to not eat here. i ordered a number 4, it was horrible the only bright side was the fries it was some pretty decent fries wouldn't eat it very day though. My burger was the most depressing i don't know if it would make a difference it u put any cheese, but might it might have made it decent. I couldn't taste any flavor because the burger patty was full of grease, i was very disappointed with my meal. I also got a piece of cherry pie it was horrible, the cherry part tastes like if that pie was sitting there for at-least a month. The water was the only thing that didn't go wrong in my meal it literally hydrated me from the burger and the cherry pie ( both of them where dry btw). The only thing American about this place is that any American can afford it. I used to end up at this place with an ex-girlfriend's family, and while I enjoyed their company, the restaurant we ate in was a dump. It's a buffet style place, but most of the food looks like it has been sitting there for days. The lettuce had chunks of brown in it and the corn on a cob was dry as a bone almost like you would expect a corn to look if it were sitting out in the sun all day. Some of the people you see here are scary as well. My family took me to this place for dinner last month while I was in town and I have to say I was surprised. The food was so so good we were all talking about it still the next day. My favorite was the porterhouse steak I had, it was done to perfection just the way I like it. So I come on here to leave a review and I see all the negative reviews and I'm surprised. Better than I was expecting. Was always nervous to eat here because of other reviews and a few Norwalk natives who told me to stay away. I am glad I went in. Was pleasantly surprised with my chicken tender/rib combo. Came with a side of fries (crispy and tasty) and probably the best sweet and sour sauce I've ever had. You can purchase slices of pies and cakes or an ear of corn to go with your meal but it comes with a free salad bar/light sides. The service was friendly and always someone in sight if you need extra help or assistance. The salad bar was great. The lettuce was fresh and crunchy and the toppings were what you would expect from a salad bar. Cucumbers, tomato, onion, olives, hot peppers, croutons, beans, cheese, ham cubes, bacon bits, and so on. There is also a variety of pasta salads and potato salads. There are some sides and a make your own nachos bar. The Spanish rice was prepared well. There is a little dessert section with some jello and pudding. There is plain pasta with butter and I put some liquid gold on it and made decadent mac and cheese. Everything looked fresh nothing gross or that I purposely avoided. Only cons were no free refills on the drinks. Husband ordered fried shrimp and ribs. Fried shrimp is a greasy food but none the less tasty. I might not become a regular but this is definitely an option if you want to sit down for a quick dinner or just to try something different. Would visit again at least for the salad bar! read more
