He has been coaching our son, Luca, in private swim lessons for about a year now, and we couldn't be happier with his progress. When Luca first started, he was very hesitant about going underwater. We enrolled our 7 month old in a swim class a year ago. I believe it was 12 weeks - 30 minutes, once a week. Due to her age, we did have to go into the pool with her (they keep it nice and warm so that was great). I appreciated that it was a small class (only 4 babies to 1 instructor) because it made me feel safe with her. She learned to be more comfortable having her head underwater and just be more comfy in the water. We decided to do this once a year (it is pricy - all year long isn't realistic for us) and will be returning shortly. read more

Coach Josh has been such an amazing teacher for my little beginner swimmer David! He works at his pace and makes sure to keep it fun so my toddler doesn't lose interest or throw a fit. They clearly told us full refund if cancel and or change within 48 hours and when called to cancel in 24 hours was told will be charged cancellation fee plus trying to deceive with misleading information. Our son has been as ASA for about 2 years. We have enjoyed all of the coaches he has had. Recently the staff helped ensure we could roll into a class time that worked for our family- which we greatly appreciate. Staff was friendly although this place wasn't the right fit for us. The pool was tiny, crowded and honestly did not look enticing at all.. the instructor wasn't energetic and barely even coached my son on what to do. And they didn't even swim full laps, they kept telling him to stop half way which didn't make sense to me when they could have used the extra space. My husband, son and myself all agreed that we did not like this place. Also, I didn't like that they charge per quarter. That's a lot of money to commit to up front if you're not sure if you're going to see actual progress. Oh and they do not offer any intro/trial class. I had to pay for that one class. If I had decided to join I would've had to pay the full 3 months plus enrollment fee. No thank you. read more

Pros: warm water; located near downtown and relatively easy to access; kind instructors Cons: seasons are too long, especially for the infant program; activities during the classes get repetitive; costly at about $40/session with the full amount needing to be paid upfront; scheduling make up classes is an absolute nightmare and you'll likely end up just throwing money away/not able to reschedule sessions since it is virtually impossible; limited space for changing area or restrooms; showers for rinsing off take forever to warm up; they push HARD on signing up for the next season My main issue is scheduling. They also cancelled a class due to them having a power outage and REFUSE to refund me for their cancellation. They want to force you to reschedule, but I'm a working wife and mother and don't have space in my schedule to bring my daughter to swim two times in one week which quite frankly is unnecessary for an infant anyway. They won't let you do make up sessions into the next season so you're virtually throwing money away due to their very strict and rigid scheduling practices. I literally was on the phone with one of their reps six different times over a two day window trying to reschedule a session and it never panned out. Very inconvenient and bad customer service. We have been taking our kid to this place since she was 18months and she is 4 now. She is still in the beginner group. Every quarter , there is a new trainer and kid (esp the lil ones) gets reset and cycle keeps going. And ASA Livermore location needs some serious work! Place looks bad. Having said all that, I would still like to go there . It is a decent place with nice trainers. I hope they work on the rest of the points. And I would like to give a special mention to Nathan. He is excellent with kids. The best I saw over the last 2 years. He Knows how to talk to kids and get the most out of them while still keeping it fun for them. Totally recommend him! Buyer beware..this place is beyond horrible. We are going on our 2nd quarter with them and the instructors during the first quarter had no enthusiasm or any type of life in them. I mean you're working with toddlers for goodness sake...fake it to make it! Since swimming is such an important skill to learn we signed up for another quarter, HUGE MISTAKE ON OUR PART! The instructor we had this quarter was extremely aggressive and abusive with my daughter. My little one was scared to get back into the pool with 2 minutes remaining in the class the instructor aggressively forced her to get back in and my daughter was already in tears saying she's scared and doesn't want to do it. She even said the instructor hurt her. I would be very careful with this school and recommend to other parents out there take your kids somewhere else to learn swimming. American swim Academy was perfect for us during our first couple seasons there as we needed more individualized instruction than Calphin could provide for the level we were at. ASA is really great for beginning swimmers and certain case scenarios at other levels but not so much for my plateauing intermediate swimmer. My 7 year old has been ready for more rigorous, endurance focused lessons on the 3 main strokes that could save his life, but despite my consistent requests, they hold him back, keeping him barely practicing those 3 and at mostly half pool length until he masters butterfly. Many 7 year olds are not exactly old enough for the capability of mastering butterfly, especially at 30 min per week lessons. So my child is stuck and has plateaued or possibly even regressed because of the misplacement of focus. read more

We LOVE this place. We have been taking the infant classes(rec.start at 6months before their "fear" instinct kicks in) but have seen babies there since 4months! Infant classes must have a parent IN the water with baby. And you can bring a partner to help you after the class. I highly suggest doing this if possible. I managed without a partner for a couple classes but it's always nice to have an extra set of hands to help. Our little one started at 9 months with no problems. I think the trick is to stick with the same partner in the water with baby. We take classes with Ms.Linda whom I believe is the director for the infant classes and she is by far the best! Ms.Linda warned that changes in babies schedules can throw them off. She's amazing and always manages to get babies in the "zone," it's a gift! Most of the time it's us mamas in the water and a dad here and there so don't let that stop you! We all are there for our babies to learn some water safety and it's a tight community. Everyone is always cordial and friendly. We love the sense of community we get especially for our COVID babies. I highly recommend this location! COVID protocols: Temperature checks before we go in every time before class and we are allowed in the building 3-5 minutes before class starts. You have to be swim ready upon arrival and make a prompt change so the next class can be let in. Many parents bring a towel for themselves and quickly change their littles and go. I bring a robe and so do other moms for a quicker change. Classes run 14 weeks at a time. I highly suggest calling to get all the details. read more

Our son has been part of American Swim Academy since he was 7 months old in Fremont. We have seen his huge development through out the years. He is now 6.5yo and has been part of ASA in Livermore for the past 2 years. We have been lucky to have Kyle as the instructor this quarter for our son. He keeps him focused during class and always takes time to explain every exercise in the pool. We have seen a huge development in his swimming skills and we are happy with the results. I want to start this review off by saying that I in no way am trying to bash this organization or it's staff members. But I read reviews before making decisions/large purchases or investments, and this makes me feel inclined to leave thoughtful reviews when I can. My happy and very chatty son (4 y/o) began swim lessons in March 2023 with Miss Jessica - she is a delight, and my son really responded well to her and her teaching style. I really appreciated that she used every moment of the 30 minute class; the two swimmers in this class were never sitting on the steps doing nothing. He was always excited to go and happy to get in the pool - never required any coercion. In this session, he received two ribbons, but still was not a fan of getting his face too wet or going under water. Jessica never forced him physically or used language that would make him feel discouraged about this. She missed one class, and he had a sub (I believe her name was Tash) - she was also wonderful, kind, and patient. For our second session, we kept our day/time, but were assigned to Miss Madison. Within the first 30 minute class, I could just tell it wasn't going to be the same experience. She didn't do anything wrong - just a different chemistry. The energy was lower, his attention wasn't held at all. I asked the office if Miss Jessica had any availability on another day/time, and they were gracious in checking for me, but this wasn't an option. I gave it a few more weeks and tried to keep an open mind, but my son's excitement level for going to swim visibly declined. We are about halfway through the quarter now. This past week, I could hear him say (clearly), "I don't want to!" with regards to putting his face in the water. He said it at least 10 times. This is frustrating - I know it is. I'd love to see him dunk his face in more than anyone, but he's not there yet, and that's why we are here... to make him more comfortable in the pool/water. At the end of class, his teacher was working on the swimmers getting back to the wall from the body of the pool/then pulling themselves up and out. He shouted, "NOOO!" went all the way underwater (because he was too far away from the wall), then grabbed the wall and pulled himself out. He was sobbing by the time he was standing out of the water. I walked over and took his hand and brought him back to our things. The class was essentially over at this point anyway, but it was clear to me that he was done for the day. I spoke to the office staff as soon as I could gather our things, and they were very helpful in finding us an alternative class on a different day/time with a different teacher. Unfortunately this new time means we will have to miss 5 remaining classes in the session, but that's our issue, not theirs. The process of scheduling make up classes is incredibly challenging - there are very rigid rules in place, and it makes it very hard to do, especially because you have to do this on the member portal. Regardless, my son has said many times since this happened - he doesn't want to go back to swimming. His core memory now is his teacher forcing him under water and making him cry. I am working on 'hyping up' his new teacher, but I'm very afraid the damage has been done, and the two sessions that we have paid for will have been a wash. I really want him to continue and progress, but I refuse to traumatize him in the process. I don't think that this will be the case for everyone - but I think it's really important to trust your gut and advocate for your child, especially with something as important as water safety. I want to reiterate that the office staff has been really helpful in trying to find another suitable option for my kiddo; unfortunately, I just don't know if we will be able to return for future sessions. I started this post but never posted but I felt the need to press post today... My child has been taking classes her for over 2 years now and she loves it! She literally wake up every morning wanting to swim. Most of the time I have no interaction with the staff that work there however a while back, I wanted to roll my daughter's class over. I walked to the window where two women were sitting, I stood where both could see me, one was on the phone she looked up and acknowledged me, the other looking at a computer screen didn't acknowledge me at all...I stood there for a total of 5 minutes, my daughter's class started so I walked away. I noticed another customer go to the window and not be acknowledged by the woman working on the computer. After a few minutes the staff finally ended her phone conversation and helped the young lady standing at the window. To my surprise I watched another customer walk to the window with the same two ladies sitting at the window and the lady that completely ignored me and the other African American lady was willing to help the third customer. Now I can make an assumption that because the third lady was White and the lady sitting behind the counter occupied with "computer work " was also white and she only opened her window to help her fellow "white" customer. Whatever's the case is customer service should be very important to any industry. The fact that I was not acknowledged shows a lack of quality customer service skills. I'm not sure why someone would be sitting at a Window where customer walk up to for help but the time could not be taken to answer a question or take a payment or better yet say "someone will be right with you" If what she was doing was that important maybe ASA should consider putting her in an office where she is out of view and the expectation of quality customer service is not expected. More importantly I don't walk away feeling slighted because of the color of my skin. Today is the main reason I'm pressing the "post review" The very same lady that was behind the counter was the "deck manager". My daughter swims with another girl who is a little older than her. They are working on swimming "comfortably " and rolling over! So my 3 year old has not mastered swimming (comfortably ) and rolling over but neither has the other child (in my opinion), As a matter of fact the other child screamed every time she rolled to her back. Will someone tell me how in the world did she receive a ribbon for swimming comfortably??? But of course the deck manager was not looking when my child swam and rolled over so she didn't receive a ribbon, which made my daughter very unhappy. There has to be a better way of handling the "ribbon, bell ring awards. At some point I hope this company will figure out How to reward one child without making another feel punished or inadequate. My daughter is 3 she didn't understand what happened! More importantly she is not the only child that this has happened to. read more

Both of my kids(5yr, 8yr) are attending classes here for quite sometime. Overall: Amount of time and money spent here vs progress they have made doesn't add up! And on top of the worthiness issues, management is totally worthless. In a recent incident, one of our kid had a cough and so Mom took him to the doc and came back to cancel the class from her home. Since it was less than 2hr window as per their stupid policies, we ended up paying for that class. Out of recent 3 classes, kids literally attended just 1. Tried to explain this situation to the manager and she was kept on asking, "why didn't the mom called us before 2hr window?" I was like, you've got to be fucking kidding me. For a Mom, sick kid is more important than their bullshit business practices. Irritated by these beggars, Cancelled the remaining classes on the spot even though we have paid and these idiots are going to charge us for the cancellation too. Such a low business practice. We are simply moving kiddos to a better place, Happy Fish. Beyond money, there is a character. These folks lack that from the heart! read more

The staff at American swim Academy is extremely friendly and accommodating. They have a structured lesson plan for all ages and it begins as soon as the student gets in the pool. What an awful place. The people who work there are rude. There is only one good teacher (who has been great), but the rest of them don't even try to teach they just go through the motions. Pre covid there are too many kids in one class so 75% of the time the student is sitting and doing nothing. With covid there are less kids per class but the teachers are still awful and staff somehow worse. The place is a dump. Don't waste your money. They also hate science. Per Nicole's response below: Having less kids in the class was not my complaint. The health guidelines to have less kids actually helped give more quality time with the students. The complaint was your terrible teachers, and your smugness and addiction to control and authority...it's weird Forcing masks on a 3 year old in 106° warehouse with no A/C is child abuse...you're an insane person if you think that's ok. And forcing fully vaccinated adults to mask is not recommended by CDC, Newsom, alameda county health or any logical thought. Tried them for a few months after getting a groupon for 4 sessions. Extended it for 3 months after that. However, parking was horrible and very limited. The lady at the front desk was very rude. I guess then didn't need our business. The pool was small and the students and teachers pretty much bump into each other while they're in swim class. I'm leaving this review a bit late but I tried to wait it out since my daughter was 3 years young. She is 5 now. My daughter attended this swim school since she was 6 months old. Covid hit and we had to postpone swim lessons. After the Covid regulations lifted I signed her up again she was 3 years old at the time. The class was 2 students per swim instructor. The instructor assigned was patient with her two students who were both under 4 years old. My daughter was starting to warm up to her lessons and then one day it was another instructor who was not the assigned to that designated time slot. The substitute instructor was impatient and forceful. My daughter was warming up to the class and she didn't let me daughter feel safe in a pretty unsafe environment, being in the water and not knowing how to swim with an unfamiliar instructor. My daughter was instructed to go under water and as she was saying no the instructor due to her not feeling comfortable and the instructor picked her up and dunked her forcefully. My daughter doesn't respond to that way of learning, honestly, I don't know what kid does. I couldn't get her to the class after that, she was always crying and terrified so I stopped taking her mid season. The following summer, I paid for a personal swim instructor who came to our home pool and she was unsuccessful to teach her the basics due to her negative impact substitute swim instructor did to her. She will be 5 this summer and she does not want to learn to swim when she was in her way to learn. But thanks to that awful swim instructor I can't get her to want to learn. I may have to find another way. It has been awful. I send her to a swim school and it was a terrible experience. I'm sure it will be for a very long time! The staff is great but this one traumatic interaction makes it a negative one. I have a son who I want to attend a swim class now I may have to look into another swim school. Make sure you guys see how the instructors interact with your kids before it makes it a negative life lesson. I don't recommend this place at all. Good luck. Also, I advised them recently of what happened, they did nothing to assist or reimbursement for the monies I had pending after the season I paid for, she just said she was going to get me off their call list. Very frustrating. The instructors don't know how to handle the kids. Instead of making the kids progress, they take them backwards. Every other class there is a new teacher who does not know where the kid stands. They don't even take an initiative to prepare before the class. Right at the beginning of the class they look at the kids chart and do basic stuff for the next 30 min and that's it! The kid does not even learn anything and they charge a lot for these 30 min classes. And it's not like we haven't brought that up with the management but they just don't care. Every class me and my husband has brought that up but Nothing! I am writing this review after 2.5 seasons with them so can imagine my frustration!!! read more

Great swim school for our kids. We have a 7 and 9 year old learning together. The academy is highly structured and well organized. They have micro levels they set out to accomplish every lesson which keeps them progressing all the time. They've had a steady rotation of instructors come and go, but they all have seemed to be of similar high quality, so their standards for hiring seem very good. The only negative is that the pool is small and it can get a little crowded when swimming outside the small learning areas. But they still get the job done regardless. read more
