One of my favorite spots in Des Moines! This past weekend was my 2nd time going for brunch and it did not disappoint. $32 for unlimited food and drink? Say less. Pre COVID, the brunch buffet definitely had more options. Instead of doing a buffet, they're currently offering a slightly limited brunch (some lunch items too!) served family style. Everything was delicious, but the star was probably the Loaded Hash Brown Casserole. However, no one at the table was disappointed with anything we ordered! The best part was the bottomless drinks. They offer a build your own Bloody Mary station, make your own mimosa, and screw drivers. Bloody Mary station is complete with maybe 15+ fixings, hot sauces, etc. The mimosa/screwdriver station offered a ton of different fruit purées to add! Our table definitely took advantage of this, and our server was always attentive & ready to bring another bottle of champagne. Overall, I recommend this place to any brunch-goers in the Des Moines area. I would go back just about every weekend if I could! It's an awesome place to spend a Saturday, with the bonus of having the Pappajohn Sculpture Park across the street! The other night I had a craving for a Pork Chop, so I asked the Yelp app where I might find one in Des Moines and it lead me straight to Americana. The menu here could be described as contemporary American; they serve chicken, fish, and steaks with what they describe as a "modern urban flair". Tip: If you're a tourist, or if you dine here with an out-of-towner in tow, I suggest you take a few minutes either before or after your meal to stroll through the Sculpture Garden (which is across the street) and take a picture with the "Alphabet Man" sculpture. Arriving early without a reservation, we were seated after a short wait at an upstairs table that overlooked the bar on the lower level and the front door - it was a perfect spot for people watching. Street parking was no problem, the ambiance was upscale and modern, and the service attentive while remaining unobtrusive. It's time for the main attraction - the food! For my main, attentive readers will probably guess that I chose the Iowa Pork Chop (12 oz. Pork Porterhouse, Bacon Sweet Corn Cream Sauce, Crispy Fingerling Potatoes, Garlic Sauteed Green Beans). When it came I found it surprisingly bland and more than a little overcooked. While the sauteed spinach and bacon on top was a nice touch, they didn't make up for lack of seasoning and overcooking. As a counterpoint, my friend had the Truffled Mac & Cheese (Goat Cheese Cream Sauce, Truffle Oil, Toasted Bread Crumbs, Fresh Herbs) with chicken breast, and it was nothing short of amazing! At least I know what to order next time... To sum it up, the ambiance and service here are excellent, the prices aren't excessive, and overall I think this might be a worthy addition to my downtown dining rotation - as long as I'm not craving a Pork Chop ;-) read more

We had received a gift certificate for Americana and decided to try their buffet after reading all the Yelp reviews about it. We made reservations online using Yelp reservations and our table was ready for us right when we arrived. Our server was Karla and she was a super sweetheart. We told her it was our first time trying the buffet and she took us on a tour of all the areas (grilled cheese sandwich station, taco/mac and cheese station, and hot food area). Here's a list of all the items I could remember from our brunch buffet ($20/person): make your own grilled cheese sandwich make your own taco and mac and cheese bar french toast pancakes orzo salad cole slaw gravy and biscuits fried chicken fried dough balls with caramel sauce grilled veggies black beans salad bar mashed potatoes tortilla soup and tomato and bisque bloody marys upstairs and downstairs seating assortment of scrambled eggs (cheese, veggies, plain) bacon sausage patties assortment of desserts Most items tasted good except for the cheese hash. Retro Iowa chop house! We came in here looking for pork. We're in Iowa, damnit, and we want the state dish. We walked away full and satisfied that we'd had some true Americana food. This is the place for comfort food- straight up American cooking. Midwest dining. It's located in an old car dealership on Locust street, across from a big ol' sculpture park! It's a beautiful place to scope out out of the large exterior windows at the front, making for an interesting and pleasant view of the capital of Iowa! The food was delicious- we both got the Iowa pork chop, which was a huge pork chop, served with crispy fingerling potatoes and garlic roasted green beans. The pork chop was grilled to perfection, while the garlic of the green beans mixed nicely with the crispy potatoes. The staff was quite friendly and welcoming. They assured us that we had ordered some of their best cookin' and were ready with some drink recommendations. The restaurant was clean, and attractive with cool stuff on the wall- old posters giving the retro vibe of the place. The ceiling is a cool looking punched tin. Be sure to check out the old timey (non-working) cigarette machine in the back by the restrooms. The place has a full bar, and it looks like they have some good happy hour specials. I was in town last weekend for the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon and I always have to do my research for the best post-race brunch in town. I'm glad I stumbled upon this place. Unfortunately since I only looked one day before, the earliest reservation available on Sunday was 12:45pm! I booked it anyways, and was actually able to bump it up 12PM. This place was a dream! The only downfall was that we were seated upstairs and if you've ever ran 13 miles, walking down steps isn't easy! You probably won't be in the same situation as us, but if you or someone in your party is in a wheelchair or has issues with stairs you will want to call ahead to make sure you are seated downstairs. My friend and I opted for the bottomless mimosas and made our way over to the buffet area. I loaded up a bowl of the Mac and cheese and threw some bacon and extra cheese on top - the Mac and cheese was probably my favorite part of the buffet. Then I got in line for the hot foods area. I loaded up my plate and made my way back upstairs. I was a fan of the cheesy potatoes, sausage, fried chicken strips, and French toast sticks. The only thing I didn't like was the eggs. As for the mimosa bar, they had multiple different flavored syrups and then an option of cranberry or orange juice so you could mix and match to your liking. I've been to Americana's famous brunch several times. Last week, I went for dinner for the first time! We were celebrating my engagement with a large table of us. They were busy, but the service was still fantastic. Upon arrival, the staff gave the table complimentary champagne for a toast. The avocado wedge salad was great, and we are still thinking about the dipping sauce for the truffle fries--it's that good! But, the standout entree is the Nashville chicken tenders. Half of our table got them. They are spicy and flavorful and come with green beans and mashed potatoes. Yum yum yum! There was a bit of a wait for food to arrive at 6pm on a Friday, but the food was worth it! Took a late lunch with a fellow traveler at Americana from a local's recommendation. The restaurant has a comfortable feel. It's large and interesting. There's retro art on the wall and just a unique feel. Lunch was delicious. I chose the chicken avocado sandwich on our server's recommendation. I also had the beet relish which I thought was delicious. My lunch companion had the lettuce wraps and the truffle fries. She also had a vanilla creme brulee. I had coffee. Everything was good here. Our waitress was on her first night by herself and couldn't remember half the appetizer order, or the drinks. Did not feel like we were locals at all as others have posted. My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. We intended to stay for awhile before going to a concert, and planned on spending a fair amount of money eating and drinking. Too bad our waitress completely ruined the experience for us, to the point that we left early, after ordering only one share plate and two drinks. She was rude, avoided eye contact, and disappeared for huge chunks of time for who knows what reason. At one point we grew frustrated and flagged another server, who went and got our waitress...who had been just standing behind a wall? What?? She billed us incorrectly and neglected to give us happy hour pricing on two of our items. When we pointed it out to her she again disappeared for an inexplicable length of time. When she returned she told us that we hadn't sat in the "Happy Hour Section" and therefore didn't get HH pricing...but she had the manager give it "this time". Considering some of the HH items were actually rung up correctly...well that doesn't add up at all. I wanted to try the beef medallions, or the lobster Mac and Cheese. My husband wanted the pork dish. I'm disappointed that we didn't get the opportunity. The dish we got was good, as were our drinks. I have no reason to suspect the other dishes we planned to get would have been any different. Still, we will never return. Do not waste your time. read more

I was here with a group for a work dinner, and it was a good time overall. There weren't all that many people there (it was a weeknight), so we received pretty good service. We began with a few appetizers to share, including cheese curds and edamame. All of them were good, so we made pretty quick work of them. For dinner, I ordered the Grilled Ribeye, which was really great and a pretty big portion. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender, and all the sides that came with it were delicious. All in all, everything was pretty good, and I'd be happy to eat there again on a future business trip. read more

There are two service areas: into the kitchen and in a space outside of a rest room corridor. I appreciate the creativity in offering a buffet. You line up and enter part of the kitchen area for your eggs and potatoes and meats - you know the traditional items including gluten options,l. the buffet serving spoons are not cleaned when the trays are replenished and there doesn't seem to be staff supervising for cleanliness or contamination. The grilled cheese station offered a variety of custom made sandwiches - but was that wonder bread? The fruits were great selection- Fresh and sweet. The desserts were amazing! The carnitas and scrambled eggs were deliciously seasoned. Bathrooms were not as clean as I would have expected in a post pandemic environment. Although This was not a Golden Corral experience (thank goodness) There was a sense of order to the chaos of limited buffet dining space. Do not sleep in on the weekend and miss the brunch here! After reading previous reviews I was a little nervous my party of 3 might have to wait. We arrive around 12 and got seated right away. It's a big place! High tops, tables, and plenty of bar seating. The brunch is all you can eat and they have a bottomless food/drink package with a mimosa and Bloody Mary bar. We did not drink, but there were so many fun sides for both drinks. The food was really good! Pretty traditional brunch options, we were LOVING the French toast sticks. They also have a grilled cheese bar, taco bar, and Mac and cheese. All in all, we will be back. Be sure to ask your server if you have any questions. All you can eat fried chicken with the fixins for $13. Bring an empty belly cause you can eat and eat. The chicken had a sweet taste to it and was really happy with the meal. The inside of the restaurant is really nice and a nice view of the Papa John sculpture park. We enjoyed a nice dinner with some friends that Monday and I will have to come back some night and try another meal. I have had multiple good experiences here so far.
