Made the trip here with some friends to see if the fried chicken was as good as we have heard. Well, all of the positive reviews are correct. The fried chicken was great. Crispy breading with a peppery kick and the chicken was super tender and juicy. Several of our group got Mexican dishes as well that they really enjoyed. The salsa was great. Everyone was super happy with their meals. There were 9 of us all together and the service was great. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Food came out quick and hot. Haven't been here in a while. No particular reason why not, there's just so many Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood we try to make our rounds. Came here for lunch and had a wonderful meal. The chips and salsa and cheese dip was very good as was our complete meal. And the margaritas were quite tasty as well. I ordered the Burrito Bandera. I ordered it with beef (chicken is also an option). It was a good sized burrito (12"), filled with ground beef and beans. The beef was seasoned well, and had nice flavor. It was topped with three sauces - ranchero salsa, cheese, and salsa verde. I thought all three were great. I'll definitely get this again! If someone tells you to go to Cherokee Street for good Mexican food, do Not. Those restaurants on Cherokee Street are over rated. Go to Amigo Joe's instead as it is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the greater STL area. Amigo Joe's has been one of my (and friends') reliable choice. They have an extensive menu but I usually order the same three dishes: chilli verde, burrito CA, fried chicken. Portions are large. Street parking near but there is a parking lot a block away on Hampton. Ambiance is low light with plenty of ethnic decor inside. There is patio seating on nice weather days. read more

Our server was very nice, they have good happy hours each night of the week, we went on a Thursday and it was a special for a medium sized margarita. The salsa is very good and the food came out very fast! Their queso is good and everything came out hot. I got the hot wings here they were OK. One of my buddies got the habanero fried chicken and it was incredible! Hot wings were nothing to write home about, and honestly, I kind of regretted getting them. Sauce was way too thin but the chicken was pretty good. But if I could take it all back and do it again. Friend brought me here & I was excited to obviously try something new. There's a huge patio for outside dining when it's nice out! If there's not room outside, there's plenty of seating in the inside. This place could work for a large party! Our waitress was super nice & attentive & the food came out super fast! Super friendly service! We went on a Sunday, which happens to be three-dollar margarita night. Margs were served on the rocks in plastic mugs, salted rim optional. It was tasty, sweet, and went down easy, like most low-cost margaritas. We did not expect high-end liquor, and I'm pretty sure we didn't get it. Totally what I expected--no complaints! I ordered the Alambre, which is many kinds of meats stirred together, topped with jalapeños and cheese, and served with beans, rice, and tortillas. It was a generous portion, and the beans and rice were great. The bacon was inch-long strips, soft and chewy, as if it hadn't been fried up nice and crispy before incorporating into the dish. I couldn't eat it. All the meat was the same color and the overall flavor was a sort of artificial butteriness I associate with MSG. (I'm not claiming it's in there ; it's just what it reminded me of.) I didn't love it and ended up tossing the leftovers I took home. All other dishes were great! Amazing margarita deal on Monday's! $2.75 for a 12oz margarita now that can't be beat! Our sever was very friendly and we didn't seem rushed to order like other mexican restaurants. I enjoyed the enchiladas espinacas (spinach) which were very flavorful and not too heavy. I even had leftovers. My partner ate all of his huge burrito pastor and said it is some of the best al pastor he's had in St. Louis. The patio is nice on a sunny day. Needless to say, we'll be back very soon! read more

Seriously good fried chicken! The habenero spiced was pretty mild but got the job done. I love that there were sides to choose from, especially the Mexican rice and beans. Our server was very nice, but didn't check in on us more than once after our food came out. We wish we could have sat outside, but it was fine. My SO and I have been trying different Mexican restaurants to find our favorite. (There are several.) Tonight we tried this place. I had heard that the fried chicken was amazing but we wanted Mexican. As SOON as we sat we were asked what we wanted to drink. This is a good and bad thing. If you go to a Mexican restaurant you will probably want a Modelo and a margarita. We knew but if you had no idea... Once we ordered we looked around. The floor was filthy. There were dishes on several tables. First out was our drinks. My "skinny" margarita tasted like it was just double margarita mix. Sooooo sweet. Too sweet. Luckily when the waiter set it down enough spilled or of it that I could add water. But honestly it was still subpar and I'm not sure there was alcohol in it. We ordered 2 appetizers. One was mini tacos. This was something you could get anywhere. There salsa was good because it wasn't too hot but it was really runny. The chips were good, light and crisp. We also ordered a cheese dip with hamburger and pico. It came out on a flat pan of sorts. There was a layer of cheese with a pile of hamburger and pico together. I took a picture. In the picture you see ALL the cheese. Just that one layer. There was more hamburger than cheese and pico. I would have thought that with the amount of cheese they pour over all their dishes there would be more. I ordered Burrito Henry and it was huge. The shrimp were big and cooked perfect and the beef and chicken were tender. I couldn't eat it all. My SO had the chimichangas and he said they were... and shrugged his shoulders. He's not enthused. He said it was just a lot of tortilla and not a lot of meat. Will we be back? Maybe we will get some chicken to go sometime but not for the Mexican food, no. read more

Ok so today was my first time here. I found out about them from TikTok. I ordered habanero wings, mega chorizo queso and a margarita. I have opened my queso yet. My margarita is strong as hell, I ordered my food to go so it's a plus being able to order a margarita online. The wings are marinated to the bone and crunchy as hell. You know...I'm not sure how to describe this place. It's kind of like a slight dive bar feeling mexican not-put-together homely casual place. The food has always been consistently good, it's pretty much on par with any other mexican restaurant you'll find in the United States. They always seem to be the same ingredients for their regular menu then a few extra dishes that are unique to the place. But if you want a beef, a chicken, and a cheese enchilada can you really distinguish from one place to the other around the corner? the staff is sparce, but pleasant. The complimentary chips and salsa are as per usual. If you are in the area and you don't mind a little bit of difficult parking then yes, I do recommend that you stop in and have dinner or lunch. read more

The service was pretty much either non-existent or indifferent. Doesn't matter which, the result is the same. The place had a few tables seated when we arrived. We were a party of 5. 10 minutes later we finally got to order drinks and the waiter was gone before we say anything else. Then he asked if we're ready to order and I said probably but I know I want some guacamole. He said I'll grab the guac without an opportunity to go ahead and place our orders. We asked for hotter salsa 3 times over 10 or 15 minutes and then about 10 minutes later it showed up. Bear in mind, there was only one other table on our side of the dining room. One, maybe two on the other side. So... I finish my margarita over 10 or 15 minutes. Then after waiting 10 minutes to be able to order another one, I decide to go to the bar to order. The waiter is standing there messing with the POS. At this point we are the only table on our side and there was one other table on the other side of the bar. He heard me ask the bartender and said nothing. Were I waiting the tables, I would have said "Oh, I'm sorry you got up, let me bring it to you". Nope. I've had the Cadillac margarita in the past and it was excellent. This one was way super sweet, like it had a clump of simple syrup that was not mixed into the batch properly. Now the food arrives. The guac was more like what you would expect in a package from the grocery store. A little watery, no seasoning, not really any flavor. For dinner, I got Amigo's Special. Wasn't sure what to expect but it came out on two large plates. The quantity of food for the price was incredible. the items on my entree were pretty good. My wife's salmon was so dry it had no moisture that you could see. Inedible from my perspective. I would not have eaten it. In the end the food is a 3 (being generous) but the service was frustrating. And that kills my stars. I have loved this place in the past. Had good service and excellent food. Something is different and not good. I tried to upload some photos, one that shows the large, large services in the Amigo's Sampler. Pretty great for 16 bucks. I would give them 5 stars but sadly this is a restaurant that thinks their customers are there to watch the news on numerous tv screens rather than enjoy a nice evening out. Im sorry but when I spend money to dine out of my home I want to escape a bit from this crazy horrible world we live in. I dont want to eat my food while being forced to watch horrible news stories on numerous tv screens. (5 screens in the small dining room i was in) I understand if you want to be a sports bar but the restaurants that play the news nonstop are a no go for me. It ranks up there with one of the best fried chicken dinners I've ever had. Dont let the habanero scare you. it's not too hot. And you get a lot of chicken too, plus 2 sides. I had to get a take-a-home-a-sack. The regular fried chicken is good as well. The service was good...no complaints. On a separate note, I saw on their special board that they had a margarita flight. I feel attacked!! I saw a random video review about this place on one of the social medias. The person said they had great fried chicken and described the taste by saying "This Mexican restaurant done figured out fried chicken!"-- and my greedy butt can't remember anything else he said after that. I love great fried chicken. I'm always listening out for a great fried chicken recommendation. So, I decided to check them out. I read the reviews and I saw that others may have seen the same video as me, and they were also recommending it. I read other reviews about some of their other dishes and people seemed pleased with those, too. I went there on a Friday before 5pm. There were few people in there. The restaurant is dark. It has the feel of an old neighborhood bar, but with table service. The staff were very pleasant and they seemed to operate/function like a family. I felt welcomed, and not in that "we're trying to keep your business" sort of way. It felt genuine. I ordered online after I walked in. I asked where could I place my order, but still to this moment I have no idea. I figured not many people did walk-in orders. Since there were some good reviews for their other dishes, I decided to also order my favorite Mexican dish, Carnitas Dinner, in addition to the habanero 1/2 chicken with mashed potatoes and corn (it comes with two sides), and regular fried chicken wings (well done). Oh, and a frozen mango margarita to-go. So, here's why I feel attacked: First of all, the Fried Chicken is FIRE!!! All of them. However, I can't speak for the flavors they come in because I didn't try them. As for the rest of the food-- not my cup of tea. I can't really tell you if everything else was good or not because all I could taste was either salt or sugar. Those aren't very complex spices. The corn, sweet, like someone added a spoon of maple syrup to some sweet corn. Mashed potatoes and gravy, salty, like tablespoons of salt added to gravy that was then pour onto salty mashed potatoes. My Carnitas Dinner gave me false hope. When I looked at the plate I saw grilled onions in my carnitas and I got excited. Then I tasted it, salty like a salt lick. I would not have been able to eat it if not for the lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole salad. Listen, I know Americans are dying from diabetes and high blood pressure by the truck load and I know it's because of our love for salt and sugar, but I don't know that I want it added to the foods I least expect it. I see how this could make the food at this restaurant more appealing/appetizing to certain taste buds. It might have just clicked for me why this restaurant is named Amigo Joe's. It's Mexican food with Working Class American flare. It's giving fusion cuisine. I'm here for it, but I feel no less attacked. read more

I went here on a mission to try the breaded mango habenero wings. They did not disappoint! They were seasoned perfectly with a slight kick, crispy,crunchy and fresh!. My only concern was how large the wings were, which is really a personal preference but they were enormous. I felt we got a good amount for the price and we were pleased. As far as the service I was picking up, but greeted promptly and withe genuine courtesy. The restaurant is a traditional style Mexican restaurant. You know when one of my friends told me his favorite fried chicken was Amigo Joe's, I had a double take making sure he meant this Mexican place. So we came twice now and just confirming, holy cow, yes the fried chicken is incredible here. Just from our perspective, their spicy spice level is a tad too spicy for us. But both the original and spicy are incredibly flavored and fried, extra crispy, awesome. On top of that you get free chips and salsa (which are awesome) Chips are the thin cut versions and the salsa is a great blend. Truthfully everything else is average. Their fried chicken is definitely the star of the show; the tacos, and sides didn't really compete. Would definitely come here if you want fried chicken, would go elsewhere if you want Mexican food. Wow, that's all I can say. I was planning on getting Mexican here but when I heard they were known for their fried chicken we tried it. The chicken is awesome and I would get it there again. The Mexican was also good, and the margaritas were very strong.
