Ended up here twice during our 4 night vacation in Key West. Mainly, because the decent food options plummet after 10pm. Plus, they have great covered open air seating for large groups. Amigos is big on using only whole ingredients in their foods. Examples being the housemade corn tortillas (corn and water) and the huge list of vegetarian/vegan items (pretty much anything that wasn't specifically a meat). Both trips we went with the tacos. First a plate (includes beans/rice) and second just the tacos. Impressively, each type of filling stood out from the others where at most generic taco joints, the beef tastes like the pork, which tastes like the chicken and so on. The standouts were the fish and beef. Both extremely tender and yummy. The hot sauce selection is exceptional, but a warning for you. I don't care how much you like hot sauce, the appropriately named 'butt blaster' is insanely hot. It will literally burn your mouth for an hour or two. You've been warned. So I ruined a taco by thinking I was a 'G' and putting ghost pepper hot sauce on it. DON'T DO IT! I love hot/spicy food but I was not ready for this hot sauce. I took one bite and started reaching for something to neutralize the pepper almost immediately. My lips were burning and didn't stop. Anyway, the beef taco (flour tortilla) was flavorful and yummy. The chicken taco tasted like it needed something. It was a little dry even though it looked like it was juicy. There wasn't much of a taste. If I ever come back I would try the fajitas, I saw someone else's and they looked and smelled great. read more

We LOVED the food and experience at Amigos for a somewhat late dinner in Key West. After another restaurant plan fell through, our group happened upon this small charming place and got on the waiting list to be seated. Taking a cue from the general Keys vibe we could tell it was friendly and laid back when the hostess walke across the street to the Tikit Bar at one point to alert a group drinking there that their table was ready. (I have definitely NEVER seen that particular service before!) When we were seated we felt soooo lucky to be at the bar top style seats facing the road and Captain Tony's Saloon, famous for being the site of Sloppy Joe's and frequented by Hemingway. From this perch we could people-watch to our hearts content! Especially entertaining were the folks trying to score some good luck by launching a coin into the fish's mouth across the way. If that wasn't enough to get you on board with a visit to Amigos, the food should be! I had some spectacular tacos of the Baja Fried Fish variety along with a great local IPA. The fire roasted corn and kitchen sink nachos (seriously generously loaded with meats and goodies) were also fantastic and our group was so happy we gave this place a try! read more

Gotta go against the grain on this one. We decided to eat here a few nights ago, as we wanted something light...and when I saw the hot sauce selection, I was sold. DEFINITELY set up for people watching (but hey, it's KW...come on...). The menu selection is short, but thorough. The beer was cold. We ended up ordering a selection of tacos...fish and pork for her, chicken for moi. She also ordered that funny green stuff made from avocado (there's not accounting for taste, but then, she did marry me, so the point holds). The tacos arrived quite quickly, and frankly, they were damned good. A bit interesting looking at square tacos, but that's a visual...has nothing to do with the awesome taste that they had. I was told this was one of the best places for Mexican food in Key West. Well I think the bar must be set pretty low. Grant it I ate there after consuming multiple cocktails at the local saloons, but it still I expected better. Fish tacos were too fishy, and the other tacos were so so at best. They made a big deal about their square tacos but square or round they still didn't taste too good. Someone in our group had a burrito, that was better but still would rate it a 3 out of 5. I have yet to find great Mexican food in south Florida. This was ok, but not great. It wasn't bad, just not something I'd repeat. The guacamole was served in a tiny black bowl. It had no onions, tomatoes, or cilantro in it. Very plain. The chips that came with it were hot out of the fryer and salted heavily. They were the best thing and very good, nice and thin too. The chicken taco came on a square tortilla. Interesting. No queso fresco or anejo, the cheese was some shredded cheese out of a package. The taco did have some cilantro, that was good. The service was good, and sitting in the sidewalk seats to people watch is great. They have a nice beer list. If you're not super picky about your Mex food, you might like it. read more

Taco is good. Burrito is ok and quiet big. Overall food and pricing are acceptable. One thing I was not happy is: they included "Qratuity Included 18%" in the sum total of the bill they presented. Moreover, there was a column TIP after that before column Total. People easily neglect that and add extra tip while we pay. I don't know how other restaurants do in KEYWEST. But I don't like it. A good Mexican joint in Old town Key West. Place had a fun and lively vibe. We went on a nice sunny day and sat by the bar area facing the street. They even serve drinks to people standing just outside the restaurant, on the street. I ordered guacamole, chips for starters and 3 tacos - carnitas, shrimp n chicken for mains. The tacos were amazing, meat was juicy, shrimps were grilled perfectly and each taco was perfectly filled. However, I wasn't impressed with guacamole. It didn't taste fresh, I could sense that it was pre-made. OMG so good!!!!! Nachos were nice, jalapeños added great heat. Worth the higher price point given the very large portion. Baja fried fish tacos were nice and so hot, had to wait a minute to dig in because they were too hot :) Carnitas is so soft and wonderful, as a taco is really good. The tortillas are made on the premises, and in my opinion, they were excellent! They wouldn't have been out of place back home, in Texas. I had a chicken taco and a fish taco. The shredded chicken was "pretty good". The fish...not so much. It was fishy, to the point where my fiancee commented that he could smell it from where he was sitting-eek! He ordered pork tacos, which received two thumbs up. Our tacos were served with a very fresh, tasty tomato based salsa- surprisingly good. They also had a set up with something like 16 kinds of hot sauce, if that's your thing. Our server was obviously put out and annoyed that she had to take care of us- this seems to be an epidemic in KW, what's up with that?? Also irksome: we ordered a beer in a 22 oz. "souvenir cup"...the beer was served in a solo cup, and when we questioned our server, she unapologetically stated that they were out of souvenir cups; info that would have been better shared with us when we ordered. In conclusion, this is a decent, relatively inexpensive change of pace once you get tired of fish sandwiches. Let me start by saying that I don't generally like soft corn tortillas but since they serve 'house made square tortillas' I decided I'd give them a try. I had 2 tacos (3.49 each) one carnitas and one shredded beef...Overall they were just ok. The beef was a little dry and they were definitely soggy because of the liquid in the meats and pretty bland. We walked by this place after turning onto a side street and decided to see what the "square tacos" were all about. It's all counter height seating, pretty small place, but completely open. Really cool though, you look out onto the street, so you can see everyone walking by and hanging out. You can see the cooks making everything, the tortillas are made there and so are the chips. Everything was really good. We filled up on the apps and could barely eat our meals! The Mexican potato appetizer was so good and I haven't seen that too often at many restaurants. They have margaritas, beer, and the regular Mexican sodas. Service was fine and we enjoyed our lunch. I think the view and ambiance are what made it! read more

Welcome to flavortown people, Amigos is here for you. Got the chips & guac, Classic salad, and fish taco plate and daaaaaaaaaamn it did not disappoint. Chips&guac were great... super fresh avocados and warm tortilla chips. Classic salad had an excellent dressing with lots of different toppings which made for lots of fresh flavor. Definitely good value for $9. The fried Mahi Mahi tacos were some of the best tacos I've had in my life we got 2 grilled and 1 fried on the taco platter and the white sauce for both of them was out of this world. Something about the fried was particularly good, and I don't normally do fried food. Also the strawberry marg was a classic and delicious. Would definitely go here again. read more

This would have been okay if they would have mentioned it on the menu to give customers some warning -- especially because the plate also came with a side of beans...which were also black. (Too many black beans!) Flavor was decent. Another strange thing was the rice wasn't Mexican style it was...bismati...?? (Actual Mexican rice is not hard to make, Amigos!) Why 5 stars, because this place rocks!!! Location, service, FOOD!! After 7 years not much has changed, and I've added some updates. If you are in KW and don't stop here then you missed the best Mexican food this town has to offer, or I at least haven't found one better. Menu offers square tacos and a wide variety of proteins, fantastic beans, soups, burritos, enchiladas, and now breakfast. I can't get enough of this place. Everything is prepared fresh everyday and the flavors are just amazing. Just the right blend of spice, seasoning to go with that protein choice. The presentation isn't fancy but it's darn near elegant. Now if the hostess could have a happy disposition this would be the ultimate destination. We went to Amigos based on the reviews. We're pretty relaxed people who rarely complain about a place, especially during these trying times when places are short-staffed, etc. But, Amigos was not a good experience. It was not busy when we went yet, it was extremely slow, unfriendly service. Seriously acted like they didn't even want customers there. It took 20 minutes just to get seated and get waitstaff to our table. When she arrived, she obviously didn't want to be there. Barely spoke to us, pretty much just slamming our drinks down in front of us, took our order and never returned. Someone else delivered our food. No one ever came back around to check if things were ok with the food or offered a refill on drinks. My husband had a fish burrito which he said was good. I had a bean burrito that was the most bizarre contraption of a burrito I've ever seen. There was pickled cabbage in the burrito. What?? And I asked for refried beans which are typically refried, pinto beans. Not here - they were black beans and they certainly weren't refried. It was just a very strange version of a bean burrito. I finished 1/4 of it and pushed it aside because it was inedible. No one ever returned to the table, even to bring our check. We waited 30 minutes past finishing eating and I finally went up and found someone to bring the check. It was not a good experience. We wouldn't recommend it and we won't be going back. read more
