This is what an olive tree looks like.
    Dan R.

"We've got provisions and lots of beer The key word is survival on the new frontier" (Donald Fagan) There's a new player on the Avon restaurant scene. Open for just a few months, Amorosa's Pizzeria took over the location of the former tenant, Hot Heaven Pizza. The Amoroso's Yelp site seems to have taken over the old Hot Heaven listing, so obviously ignore most of the old reviews (one goes back to 2009). Amorosa's has nothing to do with Hot Heaven. It has new ownership, new decor, and a new menu. We visited them for lunch yesterday, and spent some time chatting with the new owner, Jonathan. He was so welcoming and friendly, it was no act, we are 1,000% positive he is always this nice. Jonathan tweaked the old Hot Heaven menu, added some pasta dishes, kicked up the sauces, and the result is a very sweet and welcoming restaurant with pizzas, sandwiches, entrees, and more. His design team did a nice job refurbishing the space, we noticed it immediately when the lobby greeted us with a wood map of Italy and an olive tree! Jonathan told us pizzas make up a big part of his Friday and Saturday business, and when you look at Amorosa's menu you can see why. How about a Tri Color Pizza with mozzarella cheese, basil pesto, vodka sauce, and marinara sauce? How about some unusual ingredients like stracciatella and gorgonzola cheeses, hot honey, nduja (spicy sausage), baked potatoes and more? Sandwiches, pastas, stuffed breads, wings, and salads round out their deep menu. Yesterday's lunch special was a reduced price on their sandwiches, so that's where I went. I chose a Grilled Salmon Sandwich ($11.00) with a nice pan seared salmon filer topped with roasted red peppers, arugula, and lemon basil aioli with a side of French fries. My bread choice was between a sub roll, wrap, house made focaccia, Italian roll and gluten free bread. I went with the focaccia, and it was excellent, as was the generous portion of moist and perfectly cooked salmon. I have to give a shout out to the French fries too, because they were great. My wife went into the pasta menu and chose an order of Baked Ziti Ala Siciliana ($18.50) with Ricotta Cheese, melted mozzarella cheese, homemade sauce and a pretty large house salad. She had a choice of four pastas and went with Penne. It was very good, and the portion was large enough that some of it came home with us. It was nice to see a salad included with the entree, that seems to be happening less and less out there. We very much enjoyed meeting Jonathan and his adorable daughter who set our table and brought our water glasses. Next time we visit it will be for pizza time, and frankly, we can't wait.

In the worlds of Luna, Naples, E&D and Frank Pepe's, Amoroso's needs to be in the best pizza in the Avon/Farmington/WeHa conversation. This pizza (Sicilian Sunset) was the best pizza we've had in 2025. Can't wait to go back.

    Large Truffle Shuffle

I grew up in the New Haven area and I'm here to say to not sleep on Amoroso's pizzas! The dough is so flavorful and has a nice chew to it. The truffle shuffle is a unique combination of flavors that leaves any truffle-lover wanting more. If you are like me and put truffle oil even on popcorn, this pie is for you.

Stopped by here on a whim and I'm so glad we did! Very fresh food. The focaccia bread was a nice starter and I reserved a few pieces to dip in the meatball sauce. They have a couple flavors of wings and we opted for the "house" sauce which was such a unique flavor. I usually get a traditional buffalo but I went out on a limb and was pleasantly surprised. We saw about 20 pizzas go out the door while we were there so we just had to try one! The owner told us about his latest creation which he let his customers on Facebook name and it was out of this world! The people next to us saw ours and ordered one for themselves. Do not sleep on this place. It's a very charming restaurant and the staff are amazing. There are some negative reviews on Yelp recently but believe me when I tell you they will do their very best to make your experience a pleasant one. They have beer and wine available or you can byob and there's a liquor store attached to the building.

    Toasted ravioli

Amoroso has the most thoughtful, original specialty pies. The Sweet and Smokey had generous dollops of fig and the balance of sweet and savory was excellent. The truffle shuffle was also delish. I am a frequent toasted ravioli eater and these were all excellent. Nice, full and crispy. We keep ordering different things to try and haven't been disappointed in salad or pasta either. The service is also thoughtful as a new business, engaging customers to really understand what they're looking for. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Horrible quality. I' could not believe it when I opened the box. Under cooked, skimpy. Looked like an undercooked frozen pizza.

Our food arrived as the place began to fill up to capacity... still only the chef and his wife running the entire restaurant. My food was dropped off an I waited and waited for the waitress to be back to see how things were, so I could request a soup spoon to use while eating my angel hair pasta. 15-20 min later still no check in, so I used the tiny teaspoon that came with the shredded Parmesan. My lemon chicken was too lemony and not enough other flavors to be entirely enjoyable, but it was cooked perfectly. My friends enjoyed their meals too, but again with en entirely full restaurant and one server, there wasn't a lot of attention paid. We had to wait over 25 minutes just to receive our check. I was left with so many mixed feelings. It was a Wednesday night, but they should have known their reservations were full. This is not an inexpensive restaurant. Atmosphere is nice i side and yes the owner and his wife are very nice... but checking back with your tables moments after bringing their food to see if all is as expected or whether something else is needed, an important part of the dining experience. I don't know if I'll be back.

The atmosphere felt lively without being too loud, making it easy for everyone to relax, catch up, and celebrate together. I ordered the penne alla vodka with grilled chicken, and I definitely made the right choice. The vodka sauce was creamy and flavorful without being too heavy, the chicken was cooked well, and the portion was HUGE. I happily brought home leftovers, which almost felt like getting two meals for the price of one.

We started our dinner with the garlic Parmesan Tuscan wings - so crispy, so flavorful - and the truffle fries - crispy outside and pillow inside, just enough truffle flavor. For the main course, I got the Valentine special - sirloin and lobster. The most I can say about it is that it was filling. The sirloin was cooked well, but the meat was just tough. The lobster was also on the small side and stuck to the shell ( a good portion of the meat was missed because I wasn't allowed to eat like a savage). For $42, I could have made a better choice. My wife got the pork chops - now that was a good pick! The glaze was sweet, but not too sweet, and she even enjoyed the squash (which she rarely eats). For dessert, I got the tiramisu, which was again okay, nothing spectacular. My wife enjoyed the valentine dessert (a red velvet cake with cream cheese and covered in chocolate). The biggest flaw I saw is their seating arrangement - we felt very claustrophobic. For parties of two, they have a huge series of benches with a tiny table and chairs on the other side. We were initially seated between two couples (one of which was the end), and they moved their table so my tiny wife can squeeze in between to sit on the bench. I'm so glad they left soon after and we asked to take their seat. I regret some of my choices, and should have tempered my expectations, mistaking this place as a fancy restaurant. It was a decent experience, perhaps shaded by a busy Friday date night.

As soon as we sat down, they brought us bread immediately which was a nice touch. We started with the meatballs and they were so good full of flavor and cooked perfectly. For pizza, we ordered a margarita pizza and a cheese pizza, and the margarita was absolutely delicious. We split a Caesar salad salad, and my husband had the truffle bisque. For our main, the kids loved the homemade mac & cheese, and my husband ordered the pork chop... he cleaned his entire plate! I had the Chicken Parm Brooklyn with vodka sauce and cherry peppers and WOW it was amazing. So flavorful and the cherry peppers gave it the perfect kick. Not too spicy! I'm more of a buffalo spicy kind of a gal. We also shared the Brussels sprouts with aïoli and they were delicious too. Deff would re order. Portions were definitely big, which we loved we ended up taking food home. And to top it all off, we tried the butterscotch dessert and ate it so fast there wasn't even time for a photo We'll definitely be back!!!!!

And I did ask her how the cab was before I ordered it and she said great! Clearly never tried wine before. I also saw that I was charged for the bad wine. No biggie, but in a better place they would have tried to make it right. I tried a Hendrick's and tonic next, and the tonic water was definitely flat. I tried to ask nicely if the tonic water was flat and she never even tried it, just saying oh no, it's fine. Very disappointed with that service and the drinks were terrible. As for the food, they might not have any spices in the kitchen as the meatballs could have had some seasoning added so they didn't taste so bland! Pizza was eh at best. Someone should teach them about salt and how a little bit brings out the real flavors! We won't go back...the wait staff seemed more interested in talking to each other than they did the customers. And the side of the bar nearest the door was cold as they kept one set of doors open, so always a cold blast coming in. No wonder so many restaurants are failing these days.
