One adjective that describes barber Alan - AMAZING. I have had to cut my 2yo toddler boy's hair during this pandemic, and let me be honest, it's been very difficult. First of all, I'm a mom of two and I am no expert at hair cutting (other than learning from YouTube videos). During his naps, I would secretly cut his hair (since there's no way he will stay still or let me touch his hair. When I cut his hair during his nap, there would be everywhere and so difficult to clean even with a towel beneath his head, I can't really turn his head and see exactly where I'm cutting and in the end, haircut looked like crap. I'm so thankful my husband found this place because barber Alan is the best - very kid-friendly and personable. First, Alan lured my son into the barbershop with lollipops that he would award him after the haircut (my son was super hesitant and did not want to go inside; I was about to give up and just go back home - thank goodness I didn't!). My son sat on my husband's lap on the chair. He didn't put anything around his neck to prevent hair getting on him, so.. yes, hair and water went everywhere, but I was totally fine with that - we took all his clothes off and immediately gave him a bath as soon as we got home. Plus, I didn't want my son freaking out if he did put something around his neck. Alan brought out special toy cars that my son absolutely loved because he recognized how much my son loves vehicles. That was so sweet, thoughtful, and observant of him! He listened to what we requested - not too short; just trim and cut sides and back because his hair was getting way too long. We didn't want it too short or a "Mohawk" like we see on little toddlers; we just wanted a simple cut and keep his hair long on top - something more "natural." Then, Alan went straight into action - quickly starting trimming and cutting, keeping my son entertained the entire time. No snags or bloody cuts like I've seen other barbers do to babies. He worked efficiently and quick - I've never seen a barber work so carefully, accurately, and FAST. I'm definitely coming back here to see Alan with my kids!!!! I was struggling to find a barber shop that cut kids hair...specifically an infant. I made an appointment with Alan since I saw pics of kids on yelp (figured I'd take a chance with a 7mo old). This is not only a small business, but a FAMILY business and it literally took the entire family (Alan, his wife, and the dogs!) to keep my son calm and relaxed to get his hair cut and his fade done right! If I would have gone somewhere else I'm sure they would have given up since my son cried at the son of the cutters. But Alan was flexible...he had books, made noises and even did a scene change (aka we ended up cutting my son's hair on the bench outside as he was distracted with people watching). Once we found Amplify the search was over! Our younger son has never been anywhere else and probably never will go anywhere else. What about the older child? We learned trying to find a place for him that there aren't many great options out there for kids or men. They have added the ability to make a reservation- we love that but that makes walking in without one on a Saturday a bit harder - but they'll do their best to squeeze you in and honestly let you know the wait time. Then have a drink and wait ! The big change a couple years back was streamlining the staff to just the core 3 people. Now you know whoever is there is good and works with the same idea- they don't rush things, taking time to chat is absolutely fine and if you have an issue with what they've done and say something I guarantee they will fix it if that is possible. The dogs are a key to the experience too. if you're afraid of dogs or your child is, go there. We have all seen Diego work his magic on kids who were scared. Oh and the human staff is good with kids too! See comment above- there is no lesser choice if you take your child there. Everyone is patient and understands nervous parents. The only issue I ever saw was when a dad asked for a short cut for the child and mom came near the end and asked if it could be longer. The team is good but they can't turn back time or make hair grow back instantly! We'll be back in a month or so when Child 2 is ready for a cut. This is the only barber shop where my dad goes to get his haircut. I always notice when he's had a haircut because his cut is always clean and sharp. It's a family-owned business (husband and wife) and all four barbers here do a great job! The location is in the heart of Downtown Walnut Creek next to Miracullum and across the street from Starbucks. They have two comfy couches where customers can relax while waiting and pet one of the friendly "shop dogs." Kids seems to enjoy getting their haircut here because they have cool barber chairs that kids sit in which are a police car and a race car. Plus, kids get a lollipop to keep them happy either before or after their haircut! Where was this when I was a kid?! To be honest, I was filled with trepidation just thinking of putting my son in another "professional hair cut"-ting situation. And to be honest, I was taking him to lower scale places. And still on that honesty kick, I searched with the words, Autistic Hair Cut and guess what popped up first? After reading the reviews of all the happy parents and how patient everyone working at Amplify are to their impatient clients and seeing how happy the clients were after their cuts, I decided this had to be the place to take my son. He's 29 years old and has mental health issues. He does not wait well at all. He's loud but non verbal. And he has attention issues. He also has gorgeous reddish curly hair that I like at a longer length for aesthetic and practical reasons. The barber had a job to do. He was coming in behind a couple of years of cheap hair cuts and the last major screw up hadn't seemed to rectify itself over time. After clearly laying out the expectations and his seeming to be okay with what was wanted, he went to work. When the job was done, the initial assessment was that the overall look was improved by 80%. That's not bad, but I was hoping for a better result. But wait folks! This gets better! After a full hair wash and a day latter, it's obvious the magic that happened before my eyes and I didn't even see it. I am so completely happy with the end result. I could not ask for more or better. My son's behavior didn't seem to be an issue which made things go better as well. And the chairs face out into the waiting area. This helped a lot. Instead of looking behind him when someone walked into the shop, he could see who it was right away. This lowered anxiety levels all the way around. I recommend Amplifiy Barber Shop on a couple of different levels. First, if you have a special needs person who needs their hair cut and have been having trouble finding the right people, check this place out. It may be the perfect fit. Second, if you're just the regular person off the street, these folks can set you up with a great cut in the style you want. But the staff were all so helpful and kind and made him comfortable with the cars to sit in. I forgot the woman who cut my sons hair but she was so patient with him even when my three year old daughter was acting up. In my day, I would fight my parents tooth and nail about getting a hair cut. The battle would usually began as soon as the first layer of hair touched the ear. In this modern era, both my son and I pretty much let our hair grow until we look at it and realize that "it's time". And so it was a few days ago with my Kid's thick mop of hair. Now that I spend most of my time in Pleasant Hill, I've been wanting to find a more traditional Barber Shop closer to home. And since Gayle works for the City of Walnut Creek, I figured I could throw a little business their way. My son also seemed willing, although after walking down to Amplify from the Lesher Center Garage, he barely had any patience left to go in. I didn't catch the name of the guy that cut my son's hair, but he did a nice job, both clipping away and engaging him in conversation. It also helped that walking in, there was already a fun discussion in progress regarding how one of their fish jumped out of the tank. As for me, I enjoyed hanging out, chatting with the owner (who also owns a Shop on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley), and thinking that I'll be back when my fine and thin hair needs some work. So I've been here three times to give my 2 year old a haircut. All of the times, the haircut was bad. So it's my fault for going back. But it's not just about the haircut. It's about the entire experience, the vibe, the place. For one, there is a random dog in there that's just roaming around smelling people. If you are not a fan of dogs, like me, then for sure don't go there. Then there is the issue of the Playboy magazines. What's up with that? What year are we in? Then, as many people have mentioned, are the inappropriate comments made about women passing by. Seriously? Though there seems to be some sort of warmth and authenticity from the people that work there, it is obviously fake. The only reason that I went there is because my son loves sitting in the police car while getting his haircut. That's their gimmick. Well today, he only sat there after the haircut was done. And the car was full of the last kid's hair. But to be fair, when the owner noticed that, he did clean it while my kid was in it. But how many times am I supposed to give a place a chance? Three times, three bad haircuts. A weird vibe. A random dog. Porn magazines. Random 1950s disrespect towards women. Old ugly place that needs renovation.
