I was on a train travel adventure and managed to get a little stranded at the Lamy station (my friend's car broke down en route to come retrieve me, and she was still hours away), but it ended up being such a bright spot in the middle of my trek. First of all, the station itself is really cool. It's tucked up near some beautiful hills and the trees surrounding the picnic area provide lovely shade and make it a picturesque place to kill a little time. Inside, there is a little waiting room with super cool art and signage, and in the back there is a cozy pub with a great beer selection and even a food menu. They have WiFi that they freely share, and that afternoon there was a guitarist playing mellow tunes while folks just hung out. I'm not sure how I got so lucky to find such a gem of a place to post up; I spent much of the time marveling at my good fortune (and drinking a tasty beer). As cool as the station is, the real find was the people who staff and patronize it. You couldn't ask for a more welcoming or warm group of humans. As soon as I asked the station master about alternative modes of transit, my plight made the rounds. Before I knew it I had complete strangers offering me rides to various points so I could meet up with my friend. And while that at first might sound a little sketch, I can honestly say that it was just well-intentioned kindness. There is a palpable sense of community that permeates the entire place, and one can't help but soak it up. I ended up accepting a ride from a lovely gentleman who was on his way north with his college-aged daughter. What could have been a stressful travel delay actually ended up being an unexpected but wonderful mini adventure, and I managed to discover a magical little realm in a small train station seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Lessons (less learned than) reiterated and reinforced: the journey is just as important as the destination, accept the kindness of strangers and then turn around and offer it to others, and when possible, stop and have a beer and a chat at the Amtrak Lamy Station. read more

Wonderful train station manned by friendly volunteers. Free snacks and assorted gift and drink items to purchase (reasonably priced). Clean restrooms and the volunteers help you with your luggage. Nice folks. Historical building and there is even a brewery in one end of the building. Pretty new and since I don't drink I didn't try their brews but pretty impressive they have such a facility in a one horse town. The picnic area outside, under the shad trees, was quite nice and we had our lunch out there. Great experience. read more

cute little train station out in the middle of nowhere. built over 100 years ago in 1909! with some of the original brick and tile and concrete waiting benches outside there's also a little picnic area outside with tables and a shaded lawn inside is small but cozy. when i walked in, there was a sign painter hand-lettering the door exit sign which was awesome. the staff were friendly and cheerful and helpful. the ticket window was open even though it said they'd be closed online- which was good since the train was 4 hours late! (a tip for travelers - amtrak tends to be late! I downloaded the amtrak app and was able to receive up-to-date text message alerts every 30 minutes the train was delayed. This saved me hours of waiting and allowed me to arrive at the station 30 min before departure) also super friendly station doggy and kitty oh and free snacks! cookies, chips and Kind bars only thing is - i'm trying to find their phone number online since I left my car there and hoping it doesn't get towed.. read more

On one hand, it's a beautiful anachronism: a train station in the middle of nowhere. If you don't have anywhere to be and the weather is nice, you can relax (maybe) and find it peaceful. On the other hand, it really sucks; after being there for only five minutes you will begin to understand just why train travel is an anachronism. There is nothing to do there, cell phone reception is spotty at best, and there is pretty much only one place to get a cup of coffee within a mile. The temperature of the waiting room was perhaps 40º - maybe 10º warmer than the outside world. None of these things would be a big deal if Amtrak ran on time, but if you're ever ridden it, you know it never is. I was taking a westbound train and only had to wait 75 minutes. (The eastbound train was somehow already three hours behind schedule.) read more

So if you have to come through here realize that you are out in the middle of nowhere. Trains are always late. Bring yourself plenty of food and water. There is a shuttle that makes regular runs to and from Lamy station and Sante fe depot. You should schedule your ride ahead bit you can probably jump on shuttle if you need There's no cell phone reception there except for one tiny spot. Or if you go across the street to the bar food place. They were nice and gave me wifi code. The man that worked the desk was very nice and helpful. If you're going to riverside station you can't check your bag. You carry it on. But there are slots for it. The second you get on the train. read more

A gem along the route. Quaint, historic, and cozy with all the amenities we needed to wait out a train delay in comfort. Local flavor, clean (and pretty) bathrooms, comfortable seating, free refreshments and ones to buy either at the snack bar or the attached brewpub/restaurant including some nice healthier options, electric outlets (only 2), a few nicely-selected souvenirs and postcards, a local artist, lots of colorful locals visiting the restaurant, a free take one/leave one type library, and fabulous views. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. This is one of the things that makes train travel my preferred way to move around the world. You don't get this in an airport. read more

What a woderful surprise! Entered to smiling faces, great bar and good food options. And live entertainment! Made a 2 1/2 hour delayed train wait so enjoyable. One more thing...clean bathrooms! read more

My husband and I were "stranded" at the Lamy train depot for five hours when our train was delayed, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to New Mexico! This newly opened beer bar/cafe is the best! Our charming and fun servers, Sara, Jeff and Christina did everything they could to make us feel comfortable and to help pass the time. They offered us complimentary bottled water and peanuts in the shell and cards and games were made available. Jeff entertained my husband by offering a "Soda Flight" of local soft drinks when he indicated he didn't want anything alcoholic. I'm not a beer drinker, but their locally brewed beers (menu changes frequently) got rave reviews from our traveling companions. They also serve wine including a sparkling wine which was quite good. We also tried their sandwiches and pirogi and found them to be top notch. It was a great place to while the time away and meet wonderful people. We are only sorry we live so far away so this place cannot become our local hangout! read more
